I decided to take a few minutes to write a review because I think Binga's is a nice, relaxed eatery with very attractive pricing and a good menu.
We stopped in for lunch last Saturday, after we had reviewed the menu on a previous visit for a beer and to check out the place. The mood is friendly, bartender and servers were very attentive. The modeling is a bit to the industrial style, which seems to be the trend lately, but does have cute local style curiosities as decorations. Family friendly atmosphere,
The food: I was looking forward to a good Reuben and my wife was hankering for a steak sandwich.
We ordered a steak sandwich with their homemade chips and a Reuben with an upgrade to handcut fries.
They were served in about 10 minutes, even with a full house, which was great. At first look, the Reuben looked great. It was stacked high, about an inch, with thinly sliced pastrami (in my book pastrami is better then regular corned beef) , ample evenly melted swiss and an appropriate amount of sauerkraut , but the thousand island dressing was barely noticeable. Great marbled rye. There was a generous portion of fries.. I was pleased and anxious to dive in. At first bite I was very surprised. Although the pastrami was extremely tender and moist, it was deeply and very strong tasting of smoke flavor. I knew they had several smoked offerings on the menu, but never thought the pastrami would also be smoked. I have never had smoked pastrami at any restaurant or deli before. It was overpowering and to me ruined what should and could have been a very good classic Reuben worthy of 4 stars or even 5 stars with a bit more thousand island dressing. Call me a purist, but altering a classic and not describing that on the menu is not OK. Now the fries. They are obviously hand cut from fresh potatoes. The serving was large, which is fine. The fuller sized fries were golden brown, hot and delicious. However, about 30 to 40 % were small side or end cuts and were an unappetizing dark saturated color, very oily and overdone. I will say, the good tasting fries were plenty for me. I did leave a good portion on the tray which looked like a pile of burnt offerings. Some presorting and grading could easily fix this problem. Too bad, as a good handcut fry is a rarity and the ones that were cooked properly were great.
The steak sandwich also looked good. Again, tender, thinly sliced tender steak, nice layer of melted cheese, perhaps a but skimpy on the sauteed onions/peppers, but acceptable. Fresh soft roll. But once again, there was a smoked flavor. Not nearly as strong as with the pastrami, but enough to throw off the flavor or the beef. Too bad.. This came with the homemade chips. Large serving, looked nice, golden brown. Unfortunately, they were too thick and hard as a rock. I love kettle chips and do like crispy , crunchy chips, but these were almost uneatable. If you have any dental work be careful. We each tried a couple of them and could not eat any more.. just too uncomfortable to chew. Again, a simple fix would be to cut the potatoes a bit thinner and they would be great. Also a better yield per potato.
I do not review places often, but I like what they have done at this place and hope they do well. They offer a refreshing change from the so so, over-priced bland stuff in North Windham. The prices are very fair and I can see that there is a lot of effort with the offerings. I have been told the wings are fantastic. Maybe next time.. This is not a bad review, rather suggestions for a simpler way of presenting classics. We will go back and try some other items.. read more
