That place is still the undisputed champion in our book, and Black Bloc isn't a close second. But it is a genuinely pleasant stop in Maine's BBQ landscape. The owners at Black Bloc are incredibly kind, and the restaurant itself is adorable -- beautifully decorated, spotless, and clearly cared for. It's the kind of place where you immediately feel welcome. The Mean Greens are the star of the show. Truly fantastic. The cornbread is generously portioned and perfectly moist, exactly how cornbread should be. The baked beans are straightforward baked beans -- nothing fancy, but solid. The ribs, though, were the disappointment. They were fall‑off‑the‑bone tender, which we appreciated, but they had almost no flavor and absolutely no smokiness. We honestly found ourselves wondering if they were even smoked at all. Barbecue sauce was a requirement, not an option. Even with the rib letdown, the overall experience was warm and enjoyable, and we'd go back -- especially for those Mean Greens and that cornbread. Who would expect fall-off-the-bone ribs in Maine and outstanding smoked brisket? Well, it's here in Winthrop on Main St and we were lucky to stumble upon it. The restaurant has about 8 tables and you order at the counter. They have a variety of well priced sandwiches that are absolutely loaded with meat, onions, and pickles. The other choice is platters with two sides, such as coleslaw and mac and cheese, plus a hunk of hot cornbread. The servings are very generous. I ordered the rib platter, which had five meaty ribs. Outstanding. Their bbq sauce is tasty but mild. People kept talking about their burnt ends, but they were out that day. There's always a next time. We were in Winthrop for the enormous Vintage Vault market event just down the street. The event was an absolute jolly madness, and we were TIRED, and hungry. Saw a sign for BBQ, and stepped inside. Absolutely smacked in the face with amazing aromas of home cooked comfort foods. The owners here are wonderful, and serve you like you've come into their HOME. I had eyeballed it a couple of times, but have been burned with ketchup based bbq sauce. Not here. Lord have mercy that was a phenomenal brisket. Nice fat layer that was melt in your mouth. Best thing to happen to Winthrop since the Maine Central Railroad came to town! Some of the best BBQ in Maine is right here. Open since last fall I finally got to try it. Naturally, got the sampler with a couple tasty ribs, fantastic sausage, pulled pork and chicken leg. The sides of homemade cole slaw and collards mix were delicious. Ginormous moist corn bread is included. Prices were very reasonable. Brought home a brisket plate to share and the large portion of melt-in-your-mouth meat was perfect. The inside is sparkling clean and newly renovated. Only the beans&rice were a bit boring with little spice. The incredibly pleasant owners, "E" and Jim, will serve you with smiles. Tender, oh so tender. The meat on my chicken sandwich was melt in your mouth tender. I also liked that they only put a little sauce on the meat but gave you enough to make it a dripping mess if you so desire. My wife had the chicken salad, which was made with an excellent dressing that was NOT mayo, and she loved it. Our only complaint was that the buns the sandwiches were served on we not of the same quality as the wonderful fillings. The owners/chefs were very nice and everything was prepared quickly. Amazing bbq! Haven't had something this good in New England in a long time. Brisket flaked off in thick, meaty chunks and greens and beans also delicious. Owners also supper friendly. Wow! How luck are we to have authentic Texas bbq right here in Maine? We heard about Black Bloc BBQ from my SIL. We shared the combo meal with a little of everything, coleslaw , Mac & cheese, & corn bread. we did not have to wait long for the food, but as we did, a customer came in for a pick up order, knew the pit master by name, & told us we would love the food. She was right. The spicy bbq sauce was tangy & spicy with a little sweet. All the meat was juicy & flavorful. Mac & cheese was melted cheesy goodness. The cornbread had just the right warmth & texture. Not only was the food delicious, Jim was very gracious in helping me find & retrieve a lost item after the restaurant was closed. The aroma in this place is amazing. I had the sampler with two sides. Rice and beans and Cole slaw. The Cole slaw was as good as my mother's. The ribs are tender and have that rich smoky flavor. The chicken was excellent. Wasn't crazy about the sausage but the pulled pork made up for it. The owners were great people and I will definitely be back. read more

Tried Black Bloc in downtown Winthrop for first time this evening. It was amazing. It was tempting to try the special brisket, but I had a pulled pork sandwich to go. There was a good lot of meat in the freshly toasted bun. At least a half pound and maybe closer to a pound. Really tasty and cooked to perfection. Served with red onions and a pickle. Sauce was very tasty with a nice zing. Best $10 I've spent in a long time. The owners were great and very friendly. The restaurant is quite small and they are only open a few days per week. When I was a kid, there was a small grocery store in this spot. Abelli's Kennebec Fruit was the official name I think, but everyone called it Helen's, after the proprietor. We children loved to go in there for candy and sodas and other junk food. Great memories and now I'm pleased to be able to make new memories with frequent returns to try some of the other dishes. read more

Came here for a work trip and stopped by. Genuinely so good. The atmosphere was amazing! All the workers there were so nice, funny, and personable! The food itself was life changing. Super reasonable prices and we got our food for our group of 3 within minutes after ordering. Will be here again multiple times! Please try this place! Drove through Winthrop over the Memorial Day weekend and noticed that a new BBQ place had moved in the store formerly home to the roast beef place. Decided to give it a try on other Wayne folks' recommendations, and was very pleasantly surprised. I live in NYC now, which has not been known for regional BBQ, but now has some really great places, so the bar is pretty high. We ordered take-out just before they closed on Sunday. Jim, one of the owners, was behind the counter and prepared our order quickly and with care. We got a sampler plate, a pulled pork plate, and a brisket plate. Everything was great! Excellent sides, great portions, and reasonable prices. To get the true experience, we probably should have eaten our meal in-house so it would have been hot, as by the time we got back to Wayne and sat outside to eat, it got a bit cold. Nevertheless, very enjoyable. If I could make a recommendation to TripleB, it would be to offer a two-meat plate (a standard offering at most BBQ joints I've been to), because I love me some pulled pork and brisket.
