I can only ever remember going to Smokey Bones once before years ago. My dad was taking me and my wife out for lunch so we went to Smokey Bones. He had his Bones card and a coupon so we were set. The place was fairly sparse for a Monday about 1pm. I can only assume lunch rush was over. There only seemed to be a few waiters working. First day of spring and they already had what felt like the A/C on, we asked if it could be adjusted but no one ever changed it. I noticed the waiter we had seemed off his game maybe, but he stared at my wife and myself on more than on occasion, I don't know if it was curiosity or resentment, but it felt intrusive, perhaps because my wife and I are a mixed ethnic couple. The waiter seemed to be either preoccupied or just did not care for us. Either way, I was peeved off. As for the food it looked good - both my wife and I ordered a three meat combo - pulled pork, spicy sausage, and bbq chicken breast with sides. my sides were broccoli and bbq baked beans. the beans were too sweet and even after attempting to doctor them up with hot sauce and black pepper, i couldn't eat them. the broccoli was steamed perfectly so they were still crunchy. my dad got the 1 meat lunch - spicy sausage, which he said he'd had before, and enjoyed it. both my wife and I loved the spicy sausage, it had the right amount of kick. Frankly, I could of just had 2 servings of the sausage (4 links) and would of been happy. The chicken was dry and seemed to have been overcooked, and no doctoring with sauce was going to resurrect it from its untimely demise. lastly was the pulled pork - it might of been 4 or 5 ounces sitting on a thick slice of garlic bread. It was fatty and did not have any real flavor - not even smoke which I would expect. Luckily, they have 5 or 6 sauces you could try, I eventually found a mix of sauces so I could choke down the otherwise dry pulled pork. We ordered their bag of home made donuts with dipping sauce for dessert, remembering they used to give freshly fried little donuts, but this time around, they gave donut balls or holes or whatever they call them, nothing like the regular donuts they used to serve. I had to ask 3 times for a refill on my beverage, every time I tried the waiter went off somewhere else. Eventually, I caught the attention of a different server, asked her, and this other gal finally gave me a refill. Some lady was walking around asked us how everything was, I assume she was the manager, I told her point blank, how abysmal our waiter was and I did not appreciate his attitude and his lack of service. Overall the food was mediocre at best. Prices to Food ratio is off kilter. I can go else where for better food at better prices. The atmosphere was dull and boring. and the service was slow and pitiful. I'm sure my dad will go back, as for us I'd give it another try - But they really need to upgrade their waiters and start by teaching them about basics of customer service. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. The first time I came here, I got sick and puked in the parking lot. This was about a year ago. Well fast forward to tonight and I decided to give them another try (because I'm a glutton for punishment apparently.) While I didn't toss my cookies in the parking lot, I did have to contend with slow service, burnt food, and a manager who really didn't care but to take our stuff off the bill. My hamburger was so burnt, it was falling apart on my plate. My friends Hamburger was also burnt, but his onion rings were raw. Been here a few times when I lived in the area, the food was always good. Tons of options on the menu. Great drink selection, too. The last time I was here, about a month ago, I was with a group and two of us got the wrong meals. They were able to fix one (apparently just grabbed the wrong meal), but mine was something no one at my table had ordered. We had plans after so I just ate whatever it was (still a burger, but NOT the one I had ordered). It was good, just not my preferred choice. The waiter didn't seem to understand and we still got charged for it with no fix... thought that was odd. Again, we had plans after and didn't throw a fit, especially because our previous experiences went fine. From the outside it looked like it would be a great dining experience but the service was slow, the food just ok and the price too expensive. I had visited for a special dinner the night before and forgot to use a $10 coupon I received in the mail. I returned the day after to see if it would possible to get the discount from the night before. In the back of my mind, I knew it would not happen but still wanted to try. When I asked to speak with the Manager of the store, he came out and was extremely rude. He did not introduce himself, did not shake my hands and the first things that came out of his mouth was, "What do you want?" Maybe he was not having a good day or was extremely busy. I decided to let it go and proceeded to tell him my situation. All he said was, "I don't do that, but use it next time you come" and walked away I was extremely disheartened by his remarks and how he treated me. First off it was only $10 dollars, and I walked in there knowing that it might be too late to ask. He could have been a lot friendlier, and even pretended to try to do something and in the end told me that it was not possible or he couldn't find the receipt or some excuse and I would have been fine with that. He just rude and his last remark, "..use it next time you come"? Are you kidding? Does he really think I would ever come back after how he treated me? I was extremely upset and will not be coming back to this restaurant. I have spoken to other managers of different chain stores, and was never treated in such disrespect and rudeness. I hope whom ever reads this complaint in HR realizes that Smokey Bones in Lansing has lost a customer, not because of bad food or dissatisfaction with the service of the servers but because of the rudeness and the lack of respect shown to me by the MANAGER of the store who should be the example to all employees of the store. This is the second time we have ever been to a Smokey Bones. Our first visit was quite enjoyable so when my husband had a craving for ribs, we came here to satisfy him. I decided I wanted to eat somewhat healthier so I opted for the cold turkey cob salad. I ordered it without the blue cheese dressing and used balsamic vinaigrette only. The way this salad comes originally is tossed in the balsamic with blue cheese dressing on top, which seems to be too much to me. Anyways, the salad was quite good. With all of the protein in it, it satisfied my craving for a good salad. Husband had the ribs (of course) done 2 ways; one set with dry rub the other with BBQ sauce. This is a lot of meat. Luckily it was all very good so he didn't even eat much of his vegetable sides. I am a big fan of their one BBQ sauce that comes in the red squeeze bottle, perfect amount of spice with not too much sweetness. I'm not a big fan of sweet BBQ sauce. I would probably buy it if I could. So for around $37 we got a big plate of ribs, tasty salad, and a giant beer. Not bad. We will be back. read more

Tried this place again. $4.50 Sauza margarita was spot-on, well-made. Server was friendly and efficient. They turned up the music when we sat down, but it was too loud and speakers were whacked out. We asked if they could turn it down, but the server said the manager said it was already at the lowest level (which I found hard to believe since they just turned up when we sat down!). I am reviewing them based on consistency and service. I have recieved wonderful customer service each and every time I have visited no matter how busy and the food always comes out the same. I took the previous reviews with a grain of salt as they were all pretty old but knowing knowing Smokey Bones is a franchise, I got pretty much what I expected. Here are a few thoughts. 1. The one thing I found consistent across time (from previous reviews) is management does not manage space/seating very well. There are booths and high top tables all around the bar but are controlled by the hostess. We were told there would be an hour wait but there were at least six tables open in the bar area. I think, because they were separated from the hostess station, the visibility and control was lost. We were able to elbow our way to the bar so all was good with us. 2. The very crowded bar had two bartenders, and neither were very fast. This was a bit painful, but we persevered. 3. We finally got seated (yep, in a booth right behind us - crazy), and out waitress was fantastic. She was attentive and engaging, so Kudos. She kept our drinks replenished as requested and got our food to us in a very timely fashion. This was different than at least one of the reviews. 4. Our food was very good. I am a BBQ aficionado and I found their dry rubbed baby-back ribs hot, very tasty, tender, and just spicy enough. The full rack was exactly that - a FULL rack. If you like ribs and have an appetite, it is the right way to go (I love to eat and can do it well, so you can trust me on the quantity). 5. We had two appetizers, kettle chips and corn bread. The kettle chips were mushy, undercooked and unflavored slips of potatoes. The cornbread was thick, moist, warm and came with mouthwatering pecan butter. Guess which one was the better appetizer (and I am a potato man from way back). 6. They had a pretty good selection of draft beers, but were very expensive. I would recommend this place over most of the franchises like Applebees, Fridays, Round Round, etc. read more

Ribs were simply not good - the meat dry and the sauces watery and not anything special. The pulled pork sandwich was likewise dry. You also expect a ribs place to have some good local brews, but Michigan ales were sorely lacking. The sayings plastered all around the restaurant were chauvinistic. The waiter was a smart ass. The first time the waiter reached across my plate which I wasn't finished with, to remove a drink of Merlot my brother was drinking. He just got the drink. Bad service. The second time was because I heard the service and food changed. It didn't. 7 people at our table 5 were out of their drinks before the appetizers arrived. The salads we're terrible and the 6 oz steak was a little bigger than a silver dollar. I had 6 oz steaks bigger than this and the food was cold. The water was cold in the restroom to wash your hands as well. For the prices, lack of service and one waiter running from one end of the restaurant to the other with 10 working that I counted. No excuses. They really need to up their service game for such a great location. read more

On a Friday night at 7:30 pm the place was pretty quiet. Was flying solo so I sat at the bar. Bartender was quick to get the drink order but then seem focused on being social and not on the customers. Ordered the build your own platter or whatever its called. St. Louis ribs, smoked wings and smoked sliced chicken. Ribs and chicken were totally cold, you could tell they had been quickly reheated. Wings were tasty but quite salty. My sides of bbq beans and corn were the highlight. 10 years ago I would have raved about this place, but it has really gone downhill. Ater a long day on the road, saw a sign for Smokey Bones, stopped in and to my surprise the all you can eat tacos were just like my moms! And that bartender Kelley is one of a kind! This place is great for mostly a late night drink since they close at 2AM. The food is decent, nothing really special. The ribs, steak and pulled pork were fine, not amazing by any means. I find Smokey Bones to be a better burger place than anything else ironically. The other menu items just seem sub par to some of the other BBQ Smoke Houses in the area. read more

Smokey Bones is my FAVORITE place for wings. I eat a LOT of wings. I've had them almost everywhere I've been that sells them and this is the place. If you like buffalo wings, look no farther. I've never had wings that were this wonderful. Fantastic sauce. Not super greasy or over breaded or fried, but the skin isn't soggy either. Big pieces, not like some places that seem to have miniature chickens or something. Also, the prices are fantastic. Particularly if you sign up to get their coupons via e-mail. There have also been raves about it because they have $3 house chardonnay. I'm not a wine drinker but I particularly enjoy the company of an avid chardonnay drinker, and I therefore know that $3 a glass is practically a steal at a restaurant. All around - fantastic. This place used to be scrumptious with the aroma of fire roasted ribs, our last visit at the beginning of June was poor customer service. We were three friends out for the day choosing to bypass the fish market, to have ribs. When we received our orders, one friend had a food particle or debris on her drink glass, another had a nasty fork, as well as other food significant food discrepancies. These complaints were refund worthy. A third of a rack of ribs were small and mediocre and the manager was notified and blew off our experience and said she thanked us for bringing it to her attention and basically have a nice day!! Never again at this Smokey Bones. Northerner's serve their custom ers slop and take no pride in their cooking. read more

First and last visit. Waitress was rude, swore while asking for my id, kept directing us to us the new computer system on the table instead of waiting on us and rushed us. Hostess ignored us and waitstaff was standing at the entrance talking when we tried to leave. Seemed irrated that they had to move for us. My meal was awful.
