Smokey Mo's is not a place you will wait in line for two hours in lawn chairs for. On the other hand, it also doesn't have the prices of Interstellar or Mueller's. This is the original location, out of now 19, in a sliver-wide store near an HEB. The "heritage" of the place is reflected in its somewhat funky interior, and you have to walk all the way back along a narrow aisle to near the storeroom to start your order. But the regulars all know that. It is a comfortably decent, middle-of-the-road Texas BBQ joint that is very consistent in quality, our go-to place. I wish their sides and desserts were a little more stand-out, like Cooper's or Poke Jo's or Terry Black's. The only thing that's better than average is their creamed corn. Recently, they changed their buttered potatoes to add bacon and cheese, which helps a little. On the BBQ side, they've added pork belly burnt ends, which are among my favorite. The service is friendly, and they keep the orders moving. They do a lot of take-out business, given that there are only about six tables inside. Their sauce is what we now think of as the standard, not as peppery as, say, Rudy's and not as sweet as the Salt Lick. We have a bottle at home. read more

After a hard evening weights' training, I chose Smokey Mo's BBQ on Monday because I was too tired to cook. Fortunately, Smokey Mo's is across the street from Gold's gym. I just needed meat as I had already prepared potatoes and green beans at home in advance. The meat de jour was turkey and chicken. I remembered that Smokey Mo's turkey was super moist and flavorful. It did not disappoint. Zackary prepared my order pretty quickly and offered BBQ sauce, white bread, pickles, onions and plastic utensils. I said yes to all of these items. He also gave me a cup for water to drink since it was 100 degrees today...in the shade. This kind gesture was welcomed and appreciated. Zackary was Texas friendly and exuded that charming Southern hospitality. There were not very many people seated inside the restaurant. No outside seating is available at Smokey Mo's. There was a fairly steady stream of folks coming in to pick up "to-go" orders. It is important to note that Smokey Mo's has some gluten-free options. My family enjoyed the BBQ chicken and turkey. BEWARE! If you choose anything but chicken, turkey and sausage you will be charged $5 per unit of meat. I bought a small family pack $67.99. I chose brisket for my 1lb of meat and they charged me $15 extra because I chose brisket only. They said you are allowed to get 2-3 meats options. And because I chose brisket they charged me 3 units or (.67lbs) x 3. This is how it was explained to me. My final bill was $89 and change.... The meat was dry (we asked for moist) and had no flavor, and the sides were mediocre. I get better value at Franklins (downtown Austin) and they have a Michelin star. We will not be back. read more

But VERY DISAPPOINTED tonight, not only was our delivery timed moved almost an hour later after ordering but once arrived we found the pork very dry and the turkey had a coloring and white film that was questionable, we both ate very little. Later in the evening we got our deserts with my husband having pecan pie and he is a huge pie lover and it was so bad he spit it out, i was shocked!!! I enjoy getting their stuffed baked potatoes here as well as their breakfast tacos. If you ask, they will sub their buttery potatoes for the bake potato, but it is really rich. I drove into Smokey Mo's a few weeks after I moved into town just to grab a quick BBQ sandwich. Honestly, my expectations were pretty low. Placed a rather large pickup order at this location for a work event-thanksgiving potluck. Ordered roughly 15 lbs of Turkey and about 12lbs of pork loin-couldn't find ham anywhere! They needed extra notice to be able to accommodate the amount of pork loin we requested, so we were given brisket instead-all good! Staff and specifically the manager was super friendly and accommodating, and made sure we had absolutely everything we needed. Turkey was great-wonderful smoky flavor, and we got a combo of moist and lean brisket-also very delicious. Really appreciated the help getting everything together! I don't know what has happened but Smokey Mo's in Cedar Park has gone down hill in a short amount of time. Order a 2 meat plate and asked for extra sauce; didn't receive any sauce at all. This has happened the last 2x I have ordered. The response from manager was he doesn't know what happened because every order gets sauce even if they don't want it. Just now I ordered banana pudding for my kids and I only received 1 and I can't even call to complain because no one is answering the phone. I do not recommend this establishment for delivery order! The lowest guy on the BBQ pole, the humble chopped beef sandwich. Certainly not meant to serve as a true measure of a great barbecue establishment, but also something that even the most meager of places (e.g. Bill Miller) should not be able to mess up so badly. The meat was just a tad on the dry side, despite the tiny chunks of unrendered fat that were speckled about, but the SALT...OMG the SALT. I couldn't eat it. It was so sodium packed that it gave my tongue that sort of feeling as if it were almost burning. Ouch and yuck! Contrarily, the green beans tasted as if they poured them straight out of a can and added some chopped onion. SO BLAND - and, yes I actually took a bite of beans before the beef totally destroyed my palette. Lol! Seriously, this place is actually laughable. How do they stay open? I'm not comparing them to the "big boys" (e.g., Black's), but even Rudy's and Dickey's kick the crap out of this joint. To add insult to injury, 2 sandies and a shared side cost just under 20 bucks. Pft. If the chopped was so horrible, I wouldn't even dare to waste money on sampling some brisket. For those perhaps not so familiar, this is NOT Texas Q. Not even close. Tip: If you want a solid, big chopped beef make your way up to Four Points and visit Smokey J's (no worries - they're not "related" - ha!)...for only 5 bucks it's a fast and cheap BBQ fix. I have been coming here infrequently for the last ten years and always enjoyed whatever I ordered. I was confident that this time, placing a large order, they would handle it well. Sure enough, I had place an order on Saturday for a pick up on Sunday at 2:PM. they finished the order at exactly 1:59 which meant that my food wasn't sitting there for any time at all. Our family pack for eight with an extra pound of meat was very satisfying. I had ordered brisket and ribs for the meat and they were delicious. Our sides of mac n cheese, pinto beans and coleslaw were also very satisfying. Here's the impressive thing; getting good food either for dine in or take out doesn't happen by accident. People are the determining factor. I ordered the Babyback rib plate with Potato salad and slaw. BF had the brisket with green beans and Potato salad. We also had two large drinks so our bill was $22. I try the pot salad and slaw first. The potator salad was okay nothing special. I enjoyed the slaw - moist, tangy, nicely chopped. BF's green beans were meh. The ribs, Mmmmmm. Tender, meaty, not bad without sauce, much better with sauce. It came with seven ribs. The brisket was dry. BF thinks it was because they slice it very thin. He wasn't thrilled with it even with the sauce. The regular BBQ sauce was alright. Not my favorite sauce. It did have a slight kick to it. Found Smokey Mo's as a convenient stop as I was visiting and happens at the HEB. I walked in and was immediately greeted, went over to the front to see the clear and well written menu. Was told they were out of potatoes which was fine. Opted for the 2 meat plate. The cashier was extremely helpful with recommendations. But I opted for the jalapeno sausage ( definitely recommend) and the pork ribs. They were very well barbecued with lots of flavor and still juicy. The macaroni and cheese was classic and the beans were sweet and full of flavor ( I only wish I had gotten another serving.) The sauces on the tables are distinct with the spicy not being crazy hot but enough to distinguish it from the classic style. Over all it was a nice surprise when all I wanted was something to fill me up. I would like to go back and try some other meats. I heard good things about the brisket and the half chicken.
