Really solid food, tasty sides, served the way it should be in paper and with bread. Drinks from a cooler and good tea. Legit place if you want food. I really wanted to love this place. It has all the trimmings of a fantastic bbq experience. But sorry to say the flavor was lacking. We had the sampler meat platter and chose brisket, ribs, and chopped pork. All had a good smoke flavor, not too overwhelming. But there was no appreciable rub on the meats and not even salt that I could tell. The meats were tender enough. I did enjoy the bean side, and the sauces were tasty. Noting all of the great reviews - I'm hoping they had an off day. We will try it again and hope for better results. read more

The meat is why you go. I personally think the brisket is some of the best I've ever had and the rest of it is very good. The sides they serve are just meh.. It's good, yet uninspired. All the sides are served in little plastic containers. Like tasting cups at an ice cream store. No more than 4 OZ portions. The meat is decent, and like any other smoked food is dry. It really is take out only. I live 60 miles away. If you want you can sit on a log and eat in their parking lot. Briskit was tough along with the ribs, which are not babyback. Sauce leaked out of the ribs when we got home, beats leaking on my car's leather seats. They do not package anything, wrap it in paper and into the bag. Chicken was very good. The food in these ratings are over-rated. I have went here several times and the food is good. Their beach buckets are terrific. I love the sauces as well. My favorites are the sweet one and the mustard one. I have enjoyed the pork and the brisket and both were delightful. I would highly recommend going to this place. It's sort of a take out situation. There's no where to sit and eat (we ate in the car.) I am a major fan of barbecue, and I've had Smokin' D's a few times in the past and enjoyed it. That said I can't say that it is "award winning" by any means. The ribs were honestly probably the best part, they definitely beat places like Sony's. The rice on the other hand was horrible, it had no flavor what so ever, even salt didn't help. Then let's talk about payment, I hope you carry cash on you. If not you will have to do what we had to and walk to the near by gas station to use the ATM. Lastly the little seating they do have. I ride a motorcycle, so taking food with me is rarely an option. They do have these really cool looking tables made out of tree trunks, but the area around them is so dirty. There is trash all over the ground, all it would take is one of their employees walking outside for five minutes to pick it up and I would feel a lot better. I would recommend trying the place if you have cash and want to take the food to go. read more

Didn't start well when the counter person walked in from outside -- said "what do you want" -- took our order -- then wrapped our food after he picked his teeth with his fingernail. Just 5 minutes off of I95 and well worth the added time to a trip. There's a gas station right next door as well. The meat was awesome and service super quick as well as friendly. Not the very best barbecue I ever ate, but it is WAY above and beyond anything I expected to find near the beach in the St. Augustine, Florida area, and would stand out as tasty 'cue and a good value just about anywhere. I visit this area at least once a year lately to visit my girlfriend's family with her, and we always make a stop here for take-out on the way back from Crescent Beach, and it is always good. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but the stand-out item for me so far is the chicken with Alabama white sauce. I also enjoyed the chopped pork sandwich and the house (mustard-based) barbecue sauce. Sides, in my experience, are serviceable but not spectacular. Cash or check only. read more

Stopped by on our way to Crescent Beach. Other reviews were accurate as to the seating - there is none - but that was okay. Nice looking building that smelled great as you approached and entered. Seemed clean. Staff wasn't overly friendly but not rude either. We got 1 lb of brisket, 1/2 pound of pork, a large tub of beans and a large tub of cole slaw. We weren't really prepared to eat at the beach - they only had forks to take with you. I didn't ask for paper plates, but my guess is that they didn't offer any. The pork was very good - well cooked and tasty. The beans were the highlight of the meal - there were three different types and they had a pleasant kick to them. The brisket was a bit tough and a little chewy. The sauces were very good (got the house and the hot). Unfortunately the cole slaw left a lot to be desired - very little seasoning! It was also a bit pricey as compared to some of the BBQ places of similar quality we have in Gainesville. I wouldn't mind trying them again on our next trip to the beach to see if our experience is the same. read more

First of all the place was packed with enthusiastic patrons who regularly enjoy the food. I was not one, however. No tables, just an 8 x 10 room with a bathroom in it. Place your order and wait. Couple of tree stumps outside if you want to sit there and eat. I was hoping for a pulled pork sandwich that had been mixed with a sauce. They don't do that and clearly state that the sandwich is chopped meat. It comes dry and you add your choice of sauce. The meat is freshly chopped and served on Texas toast brushed with garlic butter. It's just a thick slice of square ordinary white bread with a few grill marks and quickly gets soggy. The meat is smoked on premises, but the smoke flavor has a strong petroleum tinge that I don't like. Slaw is good and the baked beans are served with a generous portion of black beans. I won't be back but they sure don't need me. There's a really neat old truck parked out front. And the sign inside reads, "This ain't Burger King. You get it our way or you don't get the damn thing." You got to admire and respect that. read more

pretty good pork sandwich, smokey flavor was good. meat was tender and moist. got the house sauce which is a mustard type of bbq sauce, new to me, tasted pretty good. I got the coleslaw as a side and that was nice as well. good sandwich. Drink options are only sweetened and unsweetened iced tea, which was ok by me. make sure you read the parking sign. read more
