Outstanding! We accidentally stumbled upon this little treasure, and all of us enjoyed our meals substantially. Three of us had tacos, and one of us had the smoked pork burrito. Those of us who had the smoked pork said it was the best we'd ever had Possibly the best food we've enjoyed on our vacation these past six days. The servers had a lot on their hands, but they were very pleasant. The location of this restaurant and it's obvious age Made it feel as if we were dining in a very old western building. I can't believe this restaurant has such few reviews. We were lucky to stop in last night for dinner. I had the Saturday special of smoked prime rib - the best prime rib I've ever eaten and my husband had the pulled pork sandwich with spicy sauce. Both were outstanding. Don't even think about it. Have been there 3X. Major disappointment on all 3 visits. I owned a very successful BBQ business in Long Beach CA from which I retired a few years ago, so I have a lot of BBQ and deli experience, having run 2 locations for 12yrs. SM's BBQ food is undoubtedly some of the worst I have ever had. We used professional Southern Pride smokers...they obviously use inferior equipment, as their food is overwhemingly so smoky you cannot taste the meat or seasoning. That's what often happens when you use ALL WOOD for your cooking. Admittedly there are some places which seem to be able to mitigate the excessive smokiness to a degree...our smoker used gas and just one log. No one ever complained that our food wasn't smoky enough. Had the brisket, ribs, pulled pork. As they say in baseball, 3 strikes and you're out. They even managed to screw up a BLT...3 skimpy thin slices of bacon from the menu which promised much more, and a sandwich which belongs on a kid's menu for $10. Their idea of coleslaw was cabbage mix with dressing drizzled on top. We sold coleslaw @ our place, made to order, but tossed just before service. Service favored regulars, and bar business obviously took precedence over food business. If there were more local options, this place would certainly be out of business by now. Pick any other place but here. read more

Worth a shot if you are in town. Went here w my wife on a road trip. The place had been partially remodeled and what was done looks good. The waitress was friendly but not overbearing. I got the burrito w smoked pork and my wife got a verde salsa burger. My burrito was excellent flavor w a homemade tortilla. The shell was a bit dry but wow was it good. My wife said her burger was decent. Stop in if you are in town. To the business, keep your remodel going and food awesome. read more

We absolutely loved our meals at this restaurant. The quesadillas and street tacos were amazing- cooked perfectly! The staff and owners made us feel like old friends. Went there for lunch today 7/30. Ice tea was horrible I asked waitress for Coke instead. She sighs and rolls her eyes. Didn't get any better. Ordered Chips and salsa. Had hair in it. I had the Philly with steak. Bread was cold and dry. Not even toasted like it should be. And who puts cheese spread on a Philly?? It was gritty and nasty. The stuff slid off the bread. Meat tasted like it'd been smoked way to long! Husband's burrito was a little better. But not even brought out to look appealing! Just the burrito on a plate! Never eat there again and definitely not recommending it! Whoever thought it was a good idea to combine smoked meat with Mexican food was way off base!! Or maybe get a better cook!! read more

I had the smoked/BBQd ribs. Ribs were cooked perfectly and the homemade sauce was delicious. My wife had the street tacos. She had one of each protein but did not care for the steak street tacos was she said it was dry (steak). Will be back to try some other items on the menu. read more

The food was great. Full bar for various drinks. However, it is a nice place not a dive bar. I would be comfortable bringing children here. I enjoyed the state street tacos with steak. My husband enjoyed his pulled pork sandwich and Mac and cheese. Service was great too. I recommend this restaurant if you are in town. read more

Probably the best kept secret in the Black Hills! I am NOT a local but this place may make me change my mind and move here! I have eaten at the Smoke House/ Smoking Mexican twice this week and every time I put my fork down for the last time to leave I know that I am coming back to try something else on the menu. I have had breakfast and lunch here and both culinary experiences were...... AMAZING!. Dinner next! Flavor adventures await and I found the serving portions just about perfect. I did not leave hungry and I did not leave feeling like I was about to slip into a food coma. I barely met the staff but felt like I was a long lost relative after inquiring about various menu items.
