Quite honestly, I was pretty disappointed with my food here and expected more given the accolades posted all over the place about this being a top 50 BBQ joint in Texas. Before I get into the food, I should say that the staff did a good job and that the place is very clean with plenty of open tables and room to eat. The entire meal for two people was only $23 but.... We had the brisket, sausage, wraps, turkey sandwich, onion rings and the chocolate chip cookie. The brisket was some of the fattiest I have ever seen after judging and tasting BBQ over the last 30 years. Someone needs to learn how to trim properly. The sauce is not very interesting and overall there isn't a strong smoke flavor with any of the meats. As usual, it should be served on the side so the meat can stand on its own. If I had to guess, they aren't using oak but instead pecan or some other less flavorful wood. The turkey had an odd off-flavor as well that we could not identify. The onion rings are said to be made on site but they had so many outer onion (thin) peels in it that they were hard to eat and often fell apart. Onion rings should have the inner part of the onion used to produce a crunch and not the very thin outer layers of the onion which are often woody. We ended up tossing about 1/2 the meal including the cookie which is just sad. They have a ton of sides and other options so it might be better if they were marketed as being closer to a generic restaurant instead of a BBQ place. read more

My take: (We probably should not have eaten here since they had no running water, but it was a long drive from Austin so we went for it). brisket was a thick swath of unrendered fat and tough-to-cut meat w/provided plastic knife / sausage was good, meaty and peppery and great w/their vinegary bbq sauce / kolaches were dry even though they just came out of the oven. The place: there's a large interior room w/plenty of seating, and the entry way is filled with historic artifacts of all kinds with nicely displayed informative facts and stories. I've been eating at Smolik's since they opened during my Junior year in high school. Mike and Gail are both very genuine people and go out of their way to help people in Mathis, regardless of what that might be. Their brisket is sincerely some of the best around south Texas. Their beans are somewhat unique and have a great flavor and broth to them. Their sausage is all house made and is from a long family history of meat purveyors. As a local, I prefer the location in town over the highway but the food is equal in both. read more

I came here for lunch and was sold on the Texas Monthly Top 50 sign. All told I can't recommend it. The guy at the counter told me they're known mostly for brisket and sausage, so I got the 2 meat plate. The sausage was pretty good. Flavorful. The brisket was not. Not enough seasoning, and little bark. I also got green beans, a staple of BBQ, and they were bland and disappointing. In contrast, the fries were quite good, crispy and tasty. BBQ sauce was forgettable and thin. Apparently they make most desserts in house, and the "Black Forest cake" (chocolate cake with a layer of cherry pie filling in the middle with a whipped cream frosting) was surprisingly good considering it wasn't a real Black Forest cake. Price was a bit high as I paid close to $20 with a drink for a lunch that was filling but disappointing. If you have to get anything, the sausage and fries were the best of my offerings. read more

We decided to dine in and went through the following process: . Walk through the line ( pay attention to the sign concerning the daily specials) . Try not to get distracted by the various signs on the walls . Order and pay at the window . Find a seat . Wait for the waiter to come by with your order and drinks The waiting staff is great. We asked for a couple of extra things and they had no problem accommodating. The menu at the restaurant is very big and looks as if it can accommodate a variety of alterations to fit any palate, lifestyle, or diet. I ordered a plain baked potato with cheese and jalapeños as well as some veggies. For the vegans out their the roasted veggies have a lot of butter on them just to give fair warning. Everything tasted great and the food was delivered to our table in a timely manner. Overall, I really recommend this place because of the vast menu and great staff. When you walk in the have a whole deli selection that looked pretty legit as well as a ton of baked items that looks pretty good BUT we saw the BBQ sign outside and came here for the meats. Brisket and to be more precise Burnt Ends. I got a Large Burnt End Sandwich and Wifey got the platter with 2 sides. Both of us loved the meat. 1st when ordering they asked us if we wanted the burnt ends with the fat or lean. I was a bit thrown off because I had never been asked that before but I thought it was cool you could choose. We both went lean and mean. I would say our portions were similar on the sandwich and meal. Wifey also had loaded mashed potatoes (her favorite) and potato chips (kettle cooked). She loved her sides and meat. She couldn't quite finish the meat but of course I helped her clear her plate on that one. My husband and I stopped here on our way back from Padre Island headed towards Kansas. We are both barbecue enthusiasts, and my husband smokes both excellent brisket and ribs. I was curious to try barbecue down here in Texas to see how it compared. All I can say is I wish we had a place like this close to Garden City Kansas. Or maybe I don't! I would be eating there all the time My husband and I each had the two meat plates with ribs and brisket. We couldn't resist the same meats. The brisket had a beautiful smoke ring and was tender enough to tear apart with your fingers and fork, with a nice chew to it. The ribs had a very light sweet glaze with well-rounded spice that complimented the pork. The cook was just right and the meat almost but did not quite fall off the bone. I have the cooked okra and macaroni and cheese for my sites. The macaroni and cheese was OK, nothing real special about it but decent. The okra was freshly fried, nice and crispy with a good taste even without using any dipping sauce on it. My husband had the pinto beans and potato salad. The pinto beans were good solid cooked beans, with a nice flavor and tender, not barbecued sweet beans like so many have. The potato salad was reminiscent of my own homemade version, with just a few differences. All in all the food was excellent, and we would be back if it was anywhere near us. Others have mentioned the decor, which was very cute and entertaining. I took special delight in the hand-painted edging in the bathroom that showed silhouette versions of ranch life. New location but NOT the same BBQ I remember and loved for so many years. We stopped here on our way home to pick up some Q to take. We ordered a half pound of brisket, half pound of pulled pork, some braised cabbage and some cole slaw. I was SOOO looking forward to that great, smoky BBQ that Smolik's was known for around Mathis. Well, here's the disappointing part..... The brisket was DRY and had a very bitter bark - like it was over-smoked with green wood. It's over an hour later as I write this and it's still bugging me. The pulled pork had been sauced! even though we never asked for it. It wasn't bad, but if I want sauce on my Q, let ME do it myself! The cabbage, while good flavor, was limp and soggy. The cole slaw was just about the only positive out of the whole meal......that's pretty sad....... Service was friendly enough, but slow. And the prices are pretty high considering the incredible drop in quality. $36+ for all I mentioned just breaks my heart. My wife is not a big BBQ fan but said she's had good BBQ......and this doesn't even come close. I AM a big BBQ fan but, sadly, I have to agree...... read more

The food (other than the barbeque) is good here. However a barbeque place should have good meats. The sides are good. The kaloches are good. The deserts are good. The barbequed meats are mediocre at best. Last two times I got brisket there it was almost too tough to eat. The sausage is pretty bad. Stopped for an early dinner today with my husband. Place is clean, staff are friendly, but our food was hit and miss. I got a smoked chicken salad and the salad was huge (I took over half of it home) and super fresh but the chicken on it was harder than a rock and super dried out.
