A person from my table order tuna with rice and got it with pita bread but at the same upcharged price. There was an issue with almost every facet of the meal. I've been here 3 times. Got the burger and waffle fries once, fish dinner another time, and the Hawg Dog another time. The wait time was crazy. The day we got a burger (I brought my wife and kids) it took over an hour and a half to get food and beverages. There was barely any one there and the staff was just standing around. Fish dinner wasn't bad. My daughter ended up getting sick afterwards and my wife wrote a review and said it wasn't their fault. Last visit I ended up getting the Hawg Dog. It was missing the core ingredients I was looking forward to on it. They ended up giving me the pulled pork in a to-go container before I left. smh. My daughter didn't feel good after this meal either. We suspect it is due to the waffle fries being cooked in the same oil the fish is cooked in. I've never given a review before, but Smuggler's earned this one. The last time we ate here I ordered the filet mignon, medium rare. I received a well done piece of shoe leather. After vowing not to return, we did. We did not have a reservation, but were told we could be seated in 15 minutes. I could see 4 empty tables and one empty booth, so after 30 minutes I asked when we might be seated. The "hostess" said it would be 15 minutes. I replied that's what we were told 30 minutes ago. The "hostess" retorted that we were welcome to leave. She quickly said she'd have us seated in 10 minutes. We should have left. Why can't people just be proactive and tell you what's up. I'm not one to give reviews. I have went to Smugglers North Shore 3 times now and every time the food has been subpar At most. The price you pay and the quality is just not what it should be. Tonight: Bluegill basket 4 very small pieces of fish, loads of waffle fries that had been under the heat lamp for a long period of time and the coleslaw was honestly not edible. The other two people that were dining with me were not impressed at all. I have not had any meal there that was good. This is really sad because I use to like going to the old place the food was really good. We made reservations for 7 people for my birthday on a Friday night. We have never been to Smugglers before. Their parking lot is very small and there is another parking lot across the street and a short walk. Just a heads up to anyone with accessibility issues. We were seated right away and had a beautiful view of Hess Lake. Our server grabbed drink orders shortly after being seated. I started with the adult Shirley temple drink and it came with a rock candy. So cute! It was delicious. We also started with their special appetizer of the week, which was spinach and artichoke dip. It came with naan dippers and was fantastic. I also started with a French onion soup. Great flavor and lots of yummy gooey cheese. I loved the wood wall and the vibes of the indoor seating. They have garage doors that lift open and we enjoyed that as well. I had the cheese tortellini for my main dish. So good! So cheesy and flavorful!! My daughter ordered a medium rare filet and it unfortunately came out medium well. They did remake it for her. Our server checked on us often. She always made sure our drinks were full. Limited parking near building, you have to park down the street and cross the road. We got there early but they seated us right away. Our server, Emma, did an excellent job. The food wasn't good at all. I had the Duck Bacon & Sweet Corn Rangoon $22. There were 5 or 6 of them that were mostly filled with cream cheese, like any other rangoon. The special was German Rouladen, meat rolls filled with bacon, onions and pickles. There wasn't much in them but dry, chewy shredded beef. My partner had the Filet Mignon topped with crumbled blue cheese. It came out covered in a thick blue cheese sauce, completely overpowering the steak, even after they scraped all they could of it off. Will not go back. read more

Next we had the prime rib which came with two sides that we ordered off the special menu. The meat was extremely tender & we received a huge portion. What I didn't like is the sweetness of the meat. It tasted like it was coated in sugar & cooked. The mashed potatoes were very good. We also got a side salad which was ok. When we received our bill I noticed there was a $2 charge for the salad. Had never been here before but made Mother's Day brunch reservations. This place is so nice. It's really brand new, having opened last fall. It was a family style brunch, set menu, and it was amazing. The ribs were my favorite. They were slathered with Bbq sauce and the meet was dark and fell off the bone. There was also pot roast and broasted chicken. The chicken I could have traded for more ribs. I mean that's already a ton of food, but there was also homemade mashed potatoes, gravy, Mac and cheese and either soup or salad plus bread. We never got the bread rolls but had plenty. The Hungarian mushroom soup was so good. Our waitress did forget to bring plates for some time and she disappeared, maybe to adjust her multiple piercings?? We even had choice of cookies or cheesecake square bites. Three cookies each was just piling on. For $35 each, we felt we had a wonderful meal in a great place. I said it's 5:30 by this time on a Saturday night and prime dinner hour and you don't have potato's baked? Disappointed you order a $27 entree and can't get a spud?! They have indoor seating and a two-level patio, plus some extra seating with firepits and a lawn. Detached "beach" bar is great as is the enormous marina where you can park your boat. (Wish they had a ladder...just in case.) The live music is pretty cool. Not too loud, at least when we saw a solo artist. Menu looked amazing - that smoker behind the building had me excited. Went here twice over a few days and got a bunch of stuff. Mojito - they forgot simple syrup. Had to go get packet of stevia. Tasted good after that correction Shots - brunch shots were really cool. Check those out and share with a friend or two. Hook, Line & Sinker - Huge drink that will cost you $16+tip. Tasty but a bit sweet. Sautéed Walleye - Tasted like nothing. Terrible. Waffle fries - Were good when they weren't soaked in walleye sauce. Brisket - 10/10. Tender with a great bark on the outside. Bourbon BBQ sauce is the right choice. Outstanding job on this one. Ribs - Inedible. So tough I could barely cut them with a steak knife. Crazy after eating that brisket. Pulled pork - more like BBQ sauce with some shredded pork added. HATE when pulled pork is served this way Baked Beans - Not bad. Cornbread - Good Chorizo Queso Dip - very good Smoked Whitefish Dip - so-so. Brisket Dip - Not really a dip at all. Just a cheesy thing with some brisket. Was ok. Spinach salad w/hot bacon dressing - Good, but not enough dressing. Really good dressing. Double it! Fried Goat Cheese Salad - Goat cheese was dynamite. We have visited twice in the past month. The first visit we were so impressed with the ambiance, beautiful setting and great food that we were willing to overlook the slow service. And I mean slow. Staff was friendly and seemed to be doing the best they could. Appetizers - pork belly lollipop and duck wontons. Both delicious and well prepared. Lollipop is enormous. Entrees - special Mahi Mahi Rockefeller, Ahi Tuna dinner and Walleye po'boy. All entrees were amazing. The food was outstanding. Decide to go back for a special birthday dinner with a group of 6. We had reservations, and were promptly seated. Did I mention we were seated right in the area where we were informed the "band" would be setting up in about 30 minutes, and playing in 45 minutes? After the hostess checking on the situation for 15 minutes, she returned to tell us we could move upstairs rather than move in the middle of our meal. The beginning of the head shaking moments. We move upstairs, which is a very nice seating area. Beautiful views. The bartender/server (should NEVER have bartender coming out from the bar on busy weekend nights) was able to get our drink order about 45 minutes after our arrival to the restaurant. Again, that was just for our order. Wait another fifteen minutes and our drinks finally arrive. We've now been there an hour. An hour. And we've only gotten our initial drinks. This is not an exaggeration. Drinks delivered and we put in an order for appetizer for the table. I specifically requested she put in the appetizer order to expedite the process, then return right away to take our dinner orders. My mistake. She left and didn't return for at least another 20 minutes to even take our dinner orders. However, thank goodness we ordered an appetizer since we were starving. Our entrees didn't arrive until we had been at the restaurant for at least 2 hours. A group of 6 people who ordered an initial round of drinks, an appetizer for the table, and entrees took 2 1/2 hours. No dessert. Several of us ordered a second drink when our entrees arrived. Never saw those, so scratched them. I thought our service the first time we visited Strugglers was slow....this visit was watching paint dry slow. Turtles are faster. It was beyond ridiculous. Manager is walking by when we are finished eating, we call her over and patiently described our experience. We were given many excuses. Our biggest disappointment was the lack of responsibility assumed and the absence of any effort to address our unhappiness. She asked if we had ordered our free birthday dessert for our birthday guest. Seriously? That's your initial suggestion? We continued to express our displeasure. The manager eventually offered up a card for a free dessert or appetizer on our next visit. One for each couple. One for each couple? That was it. Disappointing. And then the bills arrived....of course, they were wrong. The process of straightening out our bills was another 20 minute ordeal. Unbelievable. Lo and behold, our appetizer was discounted 20% at that point. Suggestions for the restaurant: capitalize on what you do right - the food! If you are short servers, then limit the seating. Do not overfill sections or overload the staff. Streamline your system for efficiency. Clearly, something is lacking. There were plenty of runners/bussers walking around who were clearly not overworked. One of the members of our party actually had to go in to our bartender/server and request our table be cleared. The sad thing is we were so excited to go for this special birthday celebration. All of the negatives rained on the birthday parade, and no one cared about their food anymore. read more

When he brought my drink and a soda for my husband, he started to turn away. I told him we were ready to order our dinners and he did take the order.. Dinner was good, but after trying repeatedly to get our waiters attention, we ordered a slice of carrot cake and asked for our bill. More than 25 minutes later, no waiter, no cake, no bill. I went inside to find him, asked for my bill, which he handed me without any mention of the cake. Looking it over, I said the cake had to be deducted from the bill. He looked at me confused. I said I wasn't paying for something we never got. After several more minutes he went downstairs with the bill, then back up and told me how much I owed. In the meantime my husband spoke with the manager. I paid the corrected bill and as I was leaving the manager told me the cake had been deducted and my "bill has been taken care of." After more than 2 hours, 1 drink, 2 entrees, and no offers of refills I didn't even dispute the difference between 'taken care of' and 'paid for by customer.' read more

A beautiful new restaurant on Hess Lake, just South of Newaygo. A nice dining room with bar and glass walls that come up in the summer. The service was friendly and prompt even with a full house. I had the French onion soup - delicious, and buffalo wings. Plenty of good choices on the menu, but I was not that hungry. Make reservations because it's a popular place. Because it's on the water parking is limited but the have a lot across the street. Look forward to coming back and exploring the menu! read more

We went to Smugglers North on a Friday nite for our anniversary and after reading both good and bad reviews, we hoped for the best and we would enjoy an awesome meal. We didnt. We had a 6:45 reservation, arrived a little early and we were seated right away. We had a very friendly waitress and got our drinks quickly. We ordered the prime rib dinner and the bbq brisket dinner. So we sat and enjoyed our drinks and waited. And waited. And waited. Ordered another drink which came quickly and we waited. And waited. and waited. 1 hour and 10 minutes later we started looking for our waitress to pay for our drinks and leave. We were so frustrated. Then she comes out with our food. Hubby ordered his prime rib medium, it was bleeding. Sent it back. It came back quickly but was probly the worst prime rib ever. It had absolutely no flavor, even with the sauce. My brisket was soooo dry that I couldnt eat it, it was hard to swallow. I moved it to the end of the table to be taken away. I ate my ice cream scoop of potato salad and baked beans. I realized later that I never even received my corn bread. The couple behind us drove there from south of Grand Rapids to eat after hearing the prime rib was wonderful. They also waited an hour for their food and his cut was so small and so tough. As he was hitting it with his fork he said "this is supposed to melt in your mouth!" His wife said her piece,which was bleeding, had absolutely no flavor. They were both so disappointed. So it wasnt just us. Fridays, I read in the reviews, seem to be super busy so maybe thats not a good nite to go there. Unfortunately for us, and the couple behind us, we wont be back to try it again. We went here for lunch today! Having grown up on the lake I went in with fairly low expectations, based on the dark and dank North Shore I had grown up with.... Boy, was I wrong! This new restaurant is FABULOUS - the food, the service and the decor! First, our server, Lanah was knowledgeable and attentive, without being hovering or over the top. Drinks were seamlessly kept full, silverware and napkins magically appeared when one was dropped, my 3-year-old niece was entertained and kept amused with their crayons and toy boat. Next, the food! We ordered the Smuggler's Mexican Street Corn as a starter. It was artfully presented and so fresh - and it was the most unique elote I've ever tasted. My Mom and I shared a Reuben, as we'd been warned they were huge. I'm so glad we did this, because it was all I could do to eat a half sandwich. The corned beef was cooked to perfection and was layered with sauerkraut and cheese with just the amount of dressing on perfectly grilled swirled rye. My sister had a smash burger and said it to was amazing. Oh, and I don't know what the secret ingredient is in their cole slaw, but it was unique and flavorful. Finally, the decor. It had a northern Michigan look and feel. Indoor and outdoor tables were nicely spaced and comfortable. Booths were also available, and I hear you can drive your boat up for service come next summer.
