Being a true aficionado of hot dogs that I am and hearing so much about how much better New York hot dog styles are than those of Chicago or Texas, I gave the SnackBOX a try. First off, other than the signature custom gourmet dogs with actual goose liver foie gras, caviar and truffle dressings that I've had, these were pretty expensive but totally within reason for New York, a city with outrageous prices on everything. For my snack I went for their Coney Island with the spicy Coney Island meat sauce, onion and yellow mustard topped with what to me was a rather inferior cheap shredded sharp cheddar, possibly out of Cuba, New York. This may have been the real McCoy of a Coney Island but for me, not all that good. The meat sauce tasted more like a Cincinnati, Ohio, Skylines Chili sauce absent any meat flavor as one would get with a Texas Hot. My bf was so determined to try hotdogs in NY and he found this. It's close to our hotel and in the time square area. Literally took us 15 minutes to find it, google maps and the yelp map both had different locations. The line wasn't long when we were waiting for our turn but it took a long time for them to get our hotdogs ready. We ordered four different hotdogs and my bf's expectations were high up but he said it was just okay. It tasted like any other hotdog, the only difference were the toppings. The hotdogs were pretty pricey compared to a lot of hotdog places. There was no other hot dog that compared after a week of trying to fulfill my craving. Almost gave up hope trying a bunch of boiled, standard dogs. This stand was a beautiful accident we stumbled upon walking back to our hotel. They give you options to create your favorite hot dog. I decided to pick the good old New York dog toppings. I am a big fan of onions and the caramelized onions are cooked properly. The pretzels are leaps and bounds better than the ones you would get from a street vendor. There is no comparison. I love those caramelized onions. Service/Speed: 4 Stars I haven't waiting on any lines so far, which means I can't judge how fast the service is during the lunch rush. Every time I have come here I never waited longer than 5 minutes to order and receive my food. Once again, I am never around for the major rush. The service is friendly and happy to help you. One of the workers was so happy he did a little spin and the hotdog went flying across the food cart and fell to the ground. I was happy when he followed all the proper procedures to ensure the sanitary quality remained high. He picked up and threw out the hotdog, removed his gloves, washed his hands, and put on a new pair of gloves before preparing another hot dog. While those steps should be the standard, it isn't in most places. Overall: 3.5 Stars In comparison to the majority of hotdogs for sale on the streets of New York this is your best bet. While there are other vendors out there that are just and good, as well as half the price out there, they aren't easy to find. In the end you pay for the quality. I was on a hunt to find a place that can match up to the dogs in LA - and I think I found the spot. Although they didn't beat out the LA dogs in my opinion, their dogs/toppings are BOMB!
