I Iwas really hoping for a great experience. I've been going to Snead's Bar-B-Q since the 80s, but I stopped visiting about 10 years ago. Recently, I noticed more cars out front and heard the restaurant was under new management, so I decided to give it another try. Unfortunately, the visit reminded me why I stepped away in the first place. I ordered burnt ends and ribs with baked beans and fries as my sides. The best part of the meal was the burnt ends, which were average by KC barbecue standards. The ribs, however, fell below what I would expect in Kansas City--the flavor just wasn't there, and I had to add sauce to get any real taste. The baked beans were not edible due to an overpowering vinegar flavor. On a positive note, the food came out quickly. The wait staff wasn't particularly friendly, but they were efficient. read more

Sneads was good years ago. Not anylonger though. We gave it a try again hoping for a better experience. Staff was friendly but the food was horrible. Horrible smell out front too. (Grease traps were backing up) We wont be back. 32.00 dollars lose.... Bbq was dry and fattie. Catfish was extremly over battered. Picture on the website show a catfish fillet. Quaint place in Belton that is remote, near Loch Lloyd. Very big, one-person restroom (not very relevant...just surprising). We picked up carryout. Beans were surprisingly good. Burnt ends were okay. Brisket was tasteless. I can't even remember what else we got, which says a lot. I like to be greeted when I walk in an establishment but we were not. A little off the beaten path but well worth the trip. Behind the great big wooden front door is a huge restaurant with at least 3 distinct seating areas and a to go counter. Our server gave us a genuine welcome and brought us to our table with menus. It wasn't hard to decide that the Wednesday lunch special for a rib tips platter sounded good. I might have chosen a sandwich but who can only pick 1 side? I need both fries and beans and when I saw it also had a tiny cup of coleslaw I was totally won over. Thanks for not making me choose!!! Beans were really tasty. Coleslaw is very finely diced and quite sweet, loved it. Rib tips were a new thing for me and I didn't mind eating around the clearly visible bones. Some edges were too dry (hello jerky!) But overall it was pretty good. Had enough to bring home a little bit of leftovers so I can attest it should satisfy the biggest appetites. read more

The small size signature dinner ($8.99) included choice of meat, choice of side, two slices of toast, a small portion of cole slaw, pickles, and choice of sauce (hot or mild), making it a good value (especially with the free iced tea from the Yelp check-in offer). The baked beans were very good (and generously sized) but the turkey was reminiscent of slightly smoky, thick sliced deli meat. I'll try a different meat next time. Good find. Place is a tad dated but the service was great and very friendly. I had the 3 kind meal combo with ham, turkey and sausage brownies. It came with 4-1/2 slices of toast and 2 sides. The ham and turkey were delicious and definitely smoked unlike a lot of other places. The sausage was unlike any other KC joint, superfine, smoky and delicious. The beans were sweet but delicious and the potato salad was sliced not chunks which I loved. We also shared the fried mushrooms which were small and breaded served with a great ranch dressing. The atmosphere is great, not much has changed since I started coming here as kid, but that's what you want in a place like this - it's more about the food! This is a fantastic and oft-overlooked place in Kansas City. I had the turkey, ribs, brisket, brownies (burnt ends), fries, beans, and cole slaw. The BBQ beans are some of the city's best. The sauce they're cooked in is somehow sweet and savory all at once with just a subtle bite of spice. The meats were all well done - smoky and juicy. The fries were handcut, perfectly salted, and crisp on the outside but nice and soft inside. That bread pudding though? So rich, warm, and sweet with vanilla ice cream to boot. We came upon this place searching for a new lake/fishing spot. The outside looked really nice but once I got inside it was a bit eerie. It looks like an old cafeteria and from the nonexistent smell of food I was a bit concerned as to what we were in for. Yelp offers a free ice tea with check in but they said they don't honor or work with yelp any longer, so that deals a no go. However the food was not bad at all and the bbq sauces were delicious. My love ordered the brisket and sausage sandwich and I order brisket rib tips and fries. The fries were tasteless and were extremely greasy but I dipped them in the bbq sauce which was my favorite part of the meal. The mac n cheese I ordered for my daughter said 5 cheese (had thick shredded cheese on top which melted by the time we reached our destination. They had some of the best beef burnt ends I've had in Kansas City. They were fall apart tender and it was inexpensive. They had a few different sauces. I didn't care too much for the spicy sauce. It didn't taste good to me. The non spicy sauce was good! I had it with my burnt ends (or brownies as they call them) and my fries. The fries were good too. My family has been coming to Sneads since the mid 1960's. As kids, my brother and sisters looked forward to playing outside the restaurant as we waited for our name to be called for our table. While there was a time in the 90's and early 2000's when the food was not up to par, it has returned to its top-notch status and is well worth the drive down Holmes Road. I've had everything on the menu from ribs to burnt ends (brownies as they call them), chicken, beef brisket and every side in between. They even serve prime rib on Friday and Saturday night which is delicious. The meat is tender and flavorful. In fact, it doesn't need any sauce because the taste is great without it. Something familiar was missing in the air. There should be no greater joy in life than a Friday lunch away from the office with a couple of fellow KC BBQ aficionados that meet weekly to explore one of the greatest gifts the greater metro area has bestowed upon the appetites of its fellow citizens. Snead's is an institution in spite of being a considerable jaunt out of the main metro area. They've been here since the 1950s it's my understanding. A lot of meals have passed through the smoker in those decades. I can't remember the last time I dined here but it had to be at least 25 years ago. It's a long way out of the way from where I live and I arrived with anticipation. What in the hell happened? Our party of three gave it a unanimous thumbs down, and for good reason. Let's start with the rib dinners. Consensus was these ribs were finished cooking at least 24 hours, but more than likely 48 hours prior and rewarmed. Tough, tasteless and dry, the meat wouldn't detach properly from the bone as it should on a great rib. But the thing that really had our collective heads shaking was, where's the smoke? We even noticed from the parking lot we couldn't smell it. The sauce: whatever this item they call their hot BBQ sauce is, it's probably the most dreadful sauce I've tasted in the city, and there's competition for that. Way, way overloaded with too much black pepper and some kind of citrus, it was beyond unpleasant and almost smelled rank. That's a recipe that just doesn't work. Read the other reviews that agree. Their regular sauce lacks depth and richness. Yes, lots of sugar, but no character. No hint of celery salt, vinegar or some other ingredient that smokehouses use. I love sweet potato fries and it's pretty hard to screw them up. First time in recent memory I've left them on the plate untouched. No sauce worthy of dipping them in. One of our party had fries and a pork sandwich. It was only average for his rating. I didn't taste it and quite frankly sort of lost my appetite so I'll go with it was decent, nothing to write home about. Service: a cheerful waitress, but why can't servers be trained to keep their fingers off the top of the water glasses and their thumbs not hooked onto the tops of the plates? Sadly, as I drove back down Holmes Road on the way to I-435 I passed the original Jack Stack BBQ. With air conditioner blasting and windows rolled up I received my first blast of true BBQ smoke of the day. I inhaled deeply and drove home in silence. read more

Stopped in for lunch with the family. First time here and I was not sure what to expect. This place is classic all the way round. Building reminds me of the VFW hall back home. Dated but that is part of the charm. This goes for the BBQ too. Its not a rubbed or sauced bbq. Its just meat and smoke. Classic. The family had all had the brownies (burnt ends) and I had a half rack of ribs. The Brownies are big chunks of brisket with really good smoke bark. Ad a dab of their sweet or hot bbq sauce and you have one nice plate of food. Same goes for the ribs. Just ribs and smoke. No fluff. I will say they were fall off the bone which may turn the hard core Q fans off. For me I really liked them. Again with a dab of sweet bbq sauce. Sides were cole slaw and fries. Both were ok. Nothing bad but nothing great. The Good. Friendly Old Time Feel. Great smoke flavor. Servers who take care of you. Brownies are huge! Good sauce. HUGE drink cups. The Bad. It's certainly not the fanciest of places (think 1990's VFW or something of that nature, but if you are looking for good food, you might as well give it a shot. When you walk in, you are greeted immediately with the outdated seating and decor, but if you can get past the looks, you will be seated by a very nice (in my experience) server. She knew the menu very well, and suggested delicious substitutions to the daily specials. It wasn't overly crowded, but it seemed like everyone else was enjoying themselves too. I have been seeking out the best spots for BBQ, but in particular our hometown pride, Burnt Ends. My favorite is still Char Bar with a razor thin second place going to Slap's in KCK. The common denominator, in my opinion, for a good burnt end is a combination of the tenderness of the meat as well as the char on the end. Both locales offer that amazing burnt char as well as the moist tenderness of the beef. I had not been to Snead's since I was a kid growing up in KC. It's been so long ago I had no expectations other than the reviews I saw from fellow Yelp foodies. My son and I walked into the very plain restaurant in Belton. Nothing wrong with that. Plain or a dive can be a key ingredient for great food. However, a BIG negative was that the entire staff (front of house, wait staff, and kitchen staff) did not wear masks. COVID is ramping up again in a big way. Honestly, we should have left, but we opted to stay and vigilantly wore our own masks as the waitress never donned one for us or any of the diners yesterday at lunch. I later found out that both Belton, MO and Cass County, MO do not require masks in their city and county limits. We will be staying away. Now, on to the Brownies. The Brownies? Yes, that is the name for Snead's burnt ends. One might think a signature name for a KC tradition would offer signature taste. Not so. The Brownies were somewhat dry and definitely chewy, not tender. There was burnt char on the ends, but it was not flavored or tasted of hickory or any type of smoker. We complemented the beef Brownies with an equal size order of sausage burnt ends. I am not sure what the difference is between smoked sausage (like we love at Slap's) compared to "sausage burnt ends." I could not find anything that resembled the elements of a burnt end relegated to a different kind of meat. Coincidentally, after the disappointing experience at Snead's I owed my son a better BBQ experience, so I picked up both beef and pork burnt ends from Jack's Stack in Martin City. Both very good, and the pork burnt ends may not be for everyone (especially if you are a beef burnt ends purist), but I really liked them and they were absolutely prepared as burnt ends should be, albeit with pork. So, I would give Snead's a two star review for their food (fries were good and that lifted it to two stars), but I would give Snead's a 0 star review for caring about their customer's safety. Diners wore mask and the ownership and staff should care enough to don masks themselves. I anticipate they won't and would encourage anyone who cares about their safety and their family's safety to avoid Snead's. read more
