Went with a group of 15. They split us between two tables and they were very accommodating. So yes, I'd say they can handle large groups. Menu choices are broad, as are the drinks choices. Our server Patrick (nice haircut, by the way), was very knowledgeable of what was what. He's very gregarious, attentive, and pleasant. There was one drink that was forgotten but with a child at a nearby table screaming like a Macaw, this is understandable. It was unnerving for everyone within earshot. On the other hand, she was from New Zealand and was looking forward to American lemonade. The food was very good. I'm not overly familiar with KC specific BBQ but it was very good. Have been here a few times and food has been good each time. Tried the March special, Rob's Rueben, and it was a very upscale Rueben. I thought it was tasty. Shared some onion straws and they were very good today, not over cooked. Sometimes they are overcooked with not much substance (onions disappear) but were spot on today. I also like the Mexican street corn. My normal go to is the Pit Master Brisket sandwich, which is always delish. My go to BBQ sauce is the BBQ aioli.... So tasty and different than my other 2 favorite joints. Hubby had the burnt end burger, it was very good. On another note, when we were being seated, the restaurant was about 1/3 full and the hostess was trying to seat us in a busy, not very desirable location. We asked to sit somewhere else and were told we couldn't sit at a specific table because a server "wasn't in that section yet." As a former waitress, I found this frustrating because in my experience, servers regularly pick up tables outside their normal section when needed, whether before all staff arrive or after servers are cut. A few of us stopped in here on a Friday early afternoon and we were seated right away. We are all first timers, and our server did give us a breakdown of the menu which we did appreciate. Between the group we tried a good variety of food. The brisket was our favorite thing we ordered. It cut like butter and had excellent flavor. We enjoyed the ribs and burnt ends, but they weren't the best we've ever had. 7/10 for both. We also order the chips and fries, again both were good, but nothing special. My significant other wasn't a fan of the potato salad saying it was bland. I didn't enjoy the baked beans. They tasted like straight pepper. Overall we were not super impressed with the sides. The portion sizes were also smaller than what were used to at many other BBQ places. Usually my SO and I share a meat platter with an add on, which we ordered here, and have leftovers for roughly the same price but here I felt like we both left hungry. We paid our bills and yet again were asked to leave a review which probably just left a bad taste with us since we were asked to leave one before we even ordered food. We ordered one of each appetizer if not double and enough of us ordered almost every entree on the menu. We passed the meals around because everything looked great and wanted to try. So no one can pass up visiting one of KCs premier BBQ places. This was my first time at this location and it's very spacious and has historical foundation! Q39 is located where Hayward's Pit Bar B Que first opened, Johnson County's first BBQ restaurant. The history is literally displayed on the walls ... by the bathrooms. We weee s large party and our waitress, Jessica, did a good job at managing the ordering, food delivery and serving all of us. We many had couple of apps: Crispy Cauliflower Bite which were tender, honey and hot sauce; Q39 chip & dip (burnt ends and onion) which was so flavorful! Cauliflower is not my fave but this app wasn't bad and mixing the 2 sauces is definitely a Must! Now I was torn between so many things and settled on the Turkey Melt( best decision) and I just wanted a side of Mac & Q with brisket and spiced onion straws atop. Oh boy I don't get no side portion of the Mac & Q so I took it 2 go. Fortunately there is bar seating and was able to grab them immediately. They are good in requiring food orders to sit at the bar vs sitting and waiting for a table. Bartender was very nice. Started with the old fashioned and made well. The wings with dry rub were amazing. Taste was unique and so good. I'm not normally a fan of dry rub but it was delish. I went on my birthday primarily for my free birthday dessert (sign up for rewards). This is about my third time getting food from Q39, second from this location. I had the smoked chicken, brisket, potato salad and baked beans. My dad had burnt ends, brisket and the same sides. We both enjoyed our food. The dessert sampler was really great too! Overall 9/10! I got the chance to eat at this Q39 while on a business trip. I met a few local colleagues for dinner here and it is a pretty popular location. Be prepared to seek parking a small walk away from the restaurant but the parking lot is large and there is parking shared with other businesses in the area. The food selections are good and tasty. I had the salmon and fries and street corn. We also tried the cornbread (it was a new appetizer or new menu item). The cornbread was good but more of a cake consistency than what I'd expect from cornbread. The salmon was tasty and well cooked the fries were tasty and the corn was fine too. I had a non-alcoholic berry basil drink and it was also recommended and refreshing. The service was very friendly and entertaining as he told us the story of Q39 and how they are recognized globally as the founder was featured on a German television show years ago and so on. Some of my colleagues had salads and burnt ends and Mac n cheese and everyone seemed full and satisfied with their meals. Came to Q39 with a big group for a work dinner and it was such a great spot for a larger party. The vibe was lively but still comfortable enough to actually talk and enjoy the meal. For appetizers, we ordered a bunch for the table -- poutine, wings, fried cauliflower, chips and dips, etc. Everything was honestly really good. The portions are huge, and it was perfect for sharing. The fried cauliflower especially surprised me, and the wings were a hit with the group. For my main, I ordered the brisket and burnt ends with mac and cheese and fries as my sides. The burnt ends were SO good -- definitely the star of the meal. Super flavorful and tender. The brisket was good, but not amazing in my opinion -- still solid, just didn't wow me as much as the burnt ends did. The mac and cheese and fries were both great and, again, huge portions. I didn't get pictures but I got a spicy margarita. I didn't feel the heat from the jalapeno. It felt like a regular margarita with a slice of jalapeno in it. I would have liked it better if they would have pounded the jalapeno a little to let the spice come through For our lunch, we ordered pick2. To share between the hubs and I. We ordered brisket, sausage and added grilled pork. We ordered apple slaw and potato salad to share Brisket was tender. My wife and I were visiting from New York for a conference in Kansas City and wanted to try Kansas BBQ for the first time. After searching for some of the top spots in the area, Q39 came up, so we decided to give it a try. Since it was a Friday night, the place was packed, but we made a reservation online and were seated right when we arrived. Our server was pleasant, funny, and very helpful. Knowing it was our first time in the area and our first time trying Kansas BBQ, she made some great recommendations. For starters, she suggested the Beef Brisket Poutine and the "Best Wings on the Planet." Both were excellent choices--the food was absolutely incredible. For our main course, my wife and I ordered the Competition Plates with Angus Beef Brisket and Burnt Ends, and I added a side of ribs. The meat was so tender it practically melted in my mouth, and the burnt ends with BBQ sauce were rich and full of flavor. Apparently we were supposed to have a reservation. We arrived 20 minutes before close and they sat us anyway (party of 2). Thank You! We're from out of state. This meal was fantastic! I would strongly recommend dinner here. Whatever the sandwich is that's a brisket French dip...one of the best things I've ever eaten. It comes with a cup of horseradish aioli (see image) or on the sandwich already. We chose to have it on the side because we weren't sure how it would affect the flavor. It IS the flavor. ALL the flavors work together to create this masterpiece of flavor. I could eat this every week for the rest of my life. Mac and cheese was fantastic. Sunday early dinner meal here was good. We both got the brisket meal and you get about 4-5 burnt ends and 3 large pieces of cut brisket, along with two sides. We thought the brisket was very good, but wished the burnt ends had been crispier (& more of them). Sides of fries, beans and cold salad were good, nothing special. Prices seem awfully high for the portions, and it would be nice to get some toast with your meal like many bbq places around town serve. I also wanted to try the ribs, so I paid $5 for one tiny pork rib that was pretty tough, definitely not fall off the bone or worth $5. All in all it is a nice restaurant with good service and good food. I definitely prefer Joes or Smokehouse BBQ, but it's nice to try something different. Most people have not had competition style BBQ, it's heavily seasoned, almost overly seasoned if you're not used to it. Unlike Texas style they use a multitude of woods like hickory, mesquite on top of the usual oak. The weather was nice, so I assumed coming on a Monday would abe less busy than a Sunday, aka school night, but I was wrong. Packed for my party of 7 adults and 3 kids. We waited 30 minutes and also placed an order to go. Service was good, friendly, helpful, fast. They have good systems. Probably from the chef's background. Prices were pretty good, but the portions on some items were lacking. I like how many regions go by weight as my to go portions were lighter than my dine in portions for the same items. They are sauce heavy here, ketchup/molasses based really adds maybe a little too much hickory and overwhelms the smoked meat. Over time you realize it's a pretty corporate place with multiple locations and an entire C Suite. To me the best joints have humble roots and are owner operated because if the food isn't good branding, operations, etc matter alot less. Lean brisket was dry, fatty was closer to lean. Decent smoke ring, but bland seasoning. Lacking enough salt to create a proper bark, and considering the mismatched halves is a sign of overtrimming, not enough of a fat cap to properly protect it over the hours. Burnt ends were candy sweet and not my favorite. I've really come to prefer the focus on high quality meats like Prime and high end farms like Creekstone and Snake River. I found the midtown location to be a little better in many aspects. Angus is cool, but maybe focus on Prime meats. Ribs were excellent, a little lean on the meat. It really takes the smoke. The wings were good, you can tell they are brined, but the chipotle bbq sauce wasn't hitting. Crispy cauli bites were a little greasy and not appealing. Onion straws were small and not substantial. Chopped salad was balanced. Wedge used ranch and not blue cheese dressing, and the crispness of tomatoes is lost when they roast it. Good potato salad, baked beans were meaty and sweet. Amazing fries and kettle cooked chips were highlights as both of those travelled well. Chipotle sausage was bland in that it wasn't chedder jalapeno. Pulled pork lacked the depth of flavors, so something was lost in the shredding. No sign of the money muscle, a little scrappy. The burger's were good, but a little one dimensional as they don't mix chuck/ ribeye, sirloin, etc. Mac & cheese was oily. Pork belly was a little rubbery. Dessert Trio was great for sharing and a highlight that saved some of the meals failures. Q39 gets praise amongst many local spots due to what they do well, but from a taste, texture and appearance perspective it's mid and objectively compared to the BBQ greats they aren't going after the areas that matter most. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Decor of the store is nice, almost fancy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Aside from the top spots locally I find that other regions care more. It's classic restaurant BBQ and not competition. Good for corporate meals, large parties, out of towners, elevated casual menu. Just stopped in for a Saturday lunch; we'd only been to the midtown location so we were eager to try out this location. The decor is basically the same as midtown, but we were seated by the competition trophies, which only increased our anticipation. We were the 3rd party at the hostess station when we walked in, but still got a seat within 35 seconds. Our server Phil was everything you could want- prompt, clear & courteous, and congenial. We ordered 2 apps, which appeared within 5 minutes. The wings were fresh and tender, and the cauliflower bites were hot & crisp. Yum! My husband ordered angus brisket & burnt ends competition platter with seasonal veg, and cucumber & onion salad. I got the Q burger with pork belly bacon & crispy fried onions. I don't really have adjectives to describe how delicious our food was- it was just perfect! You know how food photography makes food look so amazing? Ok- our food was exactly the way you'd want food photography to taste. Was it better than midtown? Maybe... but we only get to Q39 every 6 months or so, so I'm not sure. Six of us came here for dinner on a weekday. We had a 6:45pm reservation. They seated us on time. Many were waiting. Place was packed but a well-oiled machine. Food was coming out of the kitchen constantly. Tables were turning continuously. The reputation had me salivating. We started with the wings and pork belly. I wished we had gotten two ordered of those wings! The waiter recommended the chipotle and they were awesome! A few of us were worried they would be too spicy but they were actually sweet! I got the pork ribs, Cole slaw, and baked beans. Also we split a Mac and cheese. Omg. Those ribs were life changing. I still think about them. They fell off the bone and were delicious. Went for lunch today and I wish I had taken pics. Certainly not my first time to queue 39 but I did try to new dishes for me ... we had the French fry poutine as a shared appetizer, soooo good! French fries, brisket, gravy, cheese, curds, salsa Verde - yum!!!! then I had the chicken griller sandwich, which was a chicken sandwich with provolone cheese, barbecue sauce, bacon, jam, and sliced chicken. It was on a buttered toast, type of bread. While I'm typically not a heavy sauce person, the only thing I would change is to add a little more sauce to the sandwich. I would order both items again.
