Our experience with Bob's Snorkel started out great. Super easy, and they had everything we needed. Not cheap, but convenient. BUT READ YOUR CONTRACT CLOSELY. One of my kids mask and breathing tube got lost in the ocean. We were charged $150 for the replacement (not including the flippers, we did not lose those). The mask and breathing tube were private label with their logo on them. They were perfectly good for our beginner level activities, but not super top of the line. We looked on amazon and felt we could have replaced them for about $40. We will NEVER rent from them again. read more

We accidentally went north instead of south on our search for Snorkel Bob's, but it was no big deal. Turns out the beach north was better for boogie boarding anyway. Yes, the gentleman working the counter tried very hard to sell us on a boat or helicopter tour, and finally, a luau, but we declined all. Had we not wasted money on the crappy Kauai Back Country tubing "adventure" we would have been more interested (Snorkel Bob--take it up with KBC). We rented boogie boards for the day for around $18 each, and the guy let us use his own beach umbrella for shade. Very nice guy, place, and prices. I would visit again. read more

It was rushhour in Bobs shop. This is probably why Bob didn't really listen to our comments about the flippers being too big and pushed his opinion on my Breatheasy snorkelmask. Been travelling to Kauai for over 20 years and we have always used Snorkel Bob's for gear rental. Both in Kapaa and Koloa/Poipuu. We just wanted gear to use one day, picking up late Fri afternoon and dropping off Sunday morning by 10am. Kapaa location - stopped by maybe around 3:30pm, thought the store was closed because the door was locked. Apparently, the owner/manager/worker was keeping track and locking out anyone who was maskless. We were asked to wear a mask and readily complied, stepped into the store, and basically ordered to sit "over there" and wait. We did not want to spend a lot of money for a short time use, so we rented the second cheapest set of gear (snorkel, mask & fins). We were asked what size fins, no additional advice on fit and he tossed a couple of mask/snorkels our way. Graciously, because it was almost 4pm, he advised there would be no charge for today (Friday). We used the gear several times on Saturday, and this was by far the worst mask I have ever used. (Went on a boat tour the previous day and the gear was flawless even for my mustached husband.) There was no adjustment we could make to have the mask work well, constant leaking and adjustment. Sunday, we just dropped off the gear as we were en route to the airport, we did not mention we were dissatisfied, I doubt it would have mattered. Literally across the ally is Boss Frog, I checked their pricing for gear, and it was less for what looked like a better set of gear. Bye Snorkel Bob's, I know help is hard to find, but this guy at your shop - meh. And maybe test the gear occasionally, I am pretty sure it has a shelf life. read more

Total scam. First of all, if you're looking to snorkel, go to Safeway and buy your own set. Under $15 each and same quality they are renting out here. For any other activities do the research on ur own to book rather than paying extra for their scams. We were looking for a dinner cruise and the prices on the sign were VERY misleading (starting at $55 when he quoted us over $200 a person). He gave us only one option that was available during our 2 week stay. He kept telling us how we had been on a hundred boat tours and this would by far be the best. We assumed he knew best until we looked up the same company that offered that tour for significantly less. He over charged by more than $50 a person so we booked ourselves directly online instead. When we realized & asked him about other options, he suddenly had something else to offer (still ridiculously priced). Funny how at first he tells us one thing then changes his mind about what he had to offer! We told him never mind about the tour and he was clearly pissed. Did he really think he could outsmart two young girls? Totally taking advantage! We still however ended up booking a surfing lesson through him that day (same price as through the actual company this time). However, we showed up on the day he told us he scheduled us for just to find out it was the wrong day! The guy at snorkel bobs was clearly not happy that we were smart enough to back out of his scam & booked us for the wrong day! Total scam looking to take advantage or tourists! read more

They offer an after hours drop box and throw in stuff like a free wetsuit rental if you get a surf lesson, both of which earned them the fifth star. If you want somebody to dictate to you what type of snorkel set you will rent and not allow you to try on any other options, and if you like someone smashing the goggles and nose piece into your face and not letting you adjust it yourself, then you have come to the right place. The guy who worked when we were there was I believe probably the same person who worked at the store in Kona when we were there. Very rude, arrogant, and doesn't care about you. There is nothing special about snorkel bobs go next-door to Boss Frogs and rent from them - they are very nice And accommodating. read more

The gear is decent, but really overpriced for daily rentals. Richard was way too pushy trying to up-sell us on all sorts of excursions that he must be getting paid referral fees on. Slick Rick also tried to talk us out of renting our own kayak to go to secret falls. Said it was "dangerous and people would steal it." We found out that renting our own kayak was super easy, the river was anything but dangerous...and how would someone steal our kayak when the only way to get to the docking area for the hike was to paddle their own kayak a few miles up the river to get there??! He left us unattended in the store while he went to chase down someone who parked in front of his store and went to the snorkel store next door. Also called that store to ask the employees about the people who were now shopping there. I had to exchange a pair of flippers because the size Richard gave me was way too small. I told him I was a 13 and he gave me 10-11. When I brought them back he didn't apologize, but instead asked: "Didn't you try them on?" When I was leaving, I spoke briefly with a lady employee on the front porch and she seemed super nice. I can almost guarantee we would have had a much better experience if she had been inside instead of Richard. Do yourself a favor and rent from somewhere else. There are lots of places that rent gear for much cheaper and you hopefully can avoid the used car salesman tactics while you are at it. read more

Amazing customer service! As per usual Snorkel Bob met all of my equipment needs and properly fitted myself, boyfriend, younger sister and brother in a matter of minutes. My mask and snorkel fit to a "T" and I haven't heard any complaints from my fellow travelers. The staff was super flexible with splitting the total cost 3 ways and for the full week to rent it was a total of 44$/person. Competitive prices, great customer service, and a friendly map to point us in the right direction for great snorkeling! Even if its crowded, hang out for a few and try not to get antsy! Snorkel Bob's was a great place to rent snorkel gear. We paid $11 per 24 hour period for their fancy non-rebreather snorkels, masks, and fins. Each rental comes with a bottle of non-fog solution to use while you snorkel. We lost our bottle at the beach this morning and they didn't charge us the $3 replacement fee. Service was great; both of the employees we met were courteous and informative. When you rent snorkel gear, they give you a sheet of the best beaches to snorkel as well as a fish guide so you know what you're seeing. We will definitely rent from Snorkel Bob's again. So sad. The worst customer service ever!!! This was our 4th year renting from Snorkel Bob's. NEVER again!!! My family and I and my buddy Jay and his family all came in to rent gear. 3 sets each. 2 guys helped us both very nice . As they where explaining to us how to return the gear. Jay and i said to the guy helping us that we where going to return them on a Saturday night as our flight out was the next day. He said no problem. Here's the combo just put them in the box. We even asked if we should rent for an extra day. He let us know it wasn't a problem. Fast forward a week and ... So my buddy Jay was about an hour ahead of me returning his gear with no problems thanks to the great customer service he received from Jake. So I return the gear an hour later and a guy who works there calls me demanding a $30 late fee. I explain to him the conversation I had when I rented . He then tells me no way that was said and that I had spoke to the owner. And that he would never say that. I then said my buddy Jay had just retuned his equipment to Jake with no problems. He told me I was lying and that he's been there all day and my buddy never was in there returning anything. Aaaaaaa yeah. About that.. Good equipment bad customer service. Go literally next door and rent $24 for 3 sets for a week and they won't call you a liar. read more

We've rented gear from Snorkel Bobs for 14 years now and we wouldn't be happy going anywhere else. Great gear-- no, awesome gear. Good prices for short-term rental. FANTASTIC prices for weekly rental. (Though I have to admit I haven't comparison shopped in over a decade so you should call around.) Quick, efficient, good service. All our info is in their computer system so we just give them our phone number and credit card and we're done! No forms to fill out. Easy Return. After hours return takes the stress off and keeps you from messing up your schedule on your last day. I love a business with a good sense of humor and SB has that in spades. The staff are genuine and helpful. It seems like you're dealing with your friends when you walk in the door. We rented from the Poipu location and it didn't feel the same-- it like we missed seeing our friends when we get off the plane. Most important Snorkel Bobs really care about their customers and really care about Hawaii and the reef. They're leaders in preserving the reefs and share that knowledge with you. When I came across an ad for Snorkel Bob's in an inflight magazine, I immediately knew we were going to rent snorkel gear from him. The ad copy struck just the right balance between "man who's passionate about snorkeling" and "man who's maybe a little too passionate about snorkeling". I was slightly disappointed that this is an actual, legitimate business and not some dude renting gear out of the back of his van slash home, but the guy who helped us out at this location was incredibly helpful, offering lots of great tips and making sure we had the right gear for our needs. We walked out of there with two sets of masks, snorkels and flippers for only about $50 for the week, and within 5 minutes of sticking our faces underwater had decided it was the best $50 we spent the entire trip. You get a card with all the types of fish you might see while you are snorkeling and we spotted almost all of them (excluding the shark, which I am not too sad about) on our first swim. I was expecting to see one or maybe two of the fish, not the entire card. It was pretty amazing. I've been in pet stores with a smaller selection of tropical fish than the beaches of Kauai. The gear itself worked flawlessly, but be sure to use the fog proofing stuff they give you - it makes a big difference. The best part of the Snorkel Bob experience is that you can return your gear to any location at any time - even after hours. Overall it was easily the most painless gear rental experience I've ever had. read more

AWESOME customer service!!!! The guys in the shop were super friendly and really went out of their way to make sure you fit the gear properly and told you some of the local insights (I.e. better visibility at this beach or lots of black urchins at this one, etc) The gear was clean, sand free and in great condition. The prices were pretty solid and they have an after hours gear return. If you go over your pre-paid time, they auto-prorate your tab. This was our first visit to Kauai and we were referred to come to this location to rent snorkel gear. Everything seemed really awesome at first, and we seemed to be given a good deal on our snorkel gear and boat tour. Richard confirmed our price and we signed off and made the payment. The gear was great, the tour was really fun although we didn't get to go to our destination because of the weather. We returned our gear and after coming back home from Kauai we get a voicemail from Richard saying he didn't charge us enough and was going to charge our card again, and then proceeded to charge our card without authorization and for a higher price then he quoted us while we were making the original purchase. My boyfriend gave him a call to get a refund for the extra charge he placed and he refused and said "well I'm not paying for it". They keep your card on file and charge your card without authorization. So basically we feel like we were scammed. We were given a price then charged afterward for a price that was not told to us originally. I give a star only because the gear was fine and you aren't going to get bad gear coming here. But if you want your money stolen this is the place to go! Oh and he also made sure to ask for a good yelp review which i was going to give because he seemed super kind and generous before this all happened. UGH, definitely got cheated here. We went for the advertised cheap rentals, but when we got there, we were only allowed to rent some of the fancier snorkel sets! There was no sign that advertised the different levels, he just grabbed a set and said, "that's it." Ended up costing wayyyyyyy too much (like $45 for a week) for just a plain set!! My hubby needed prescription goggles, so that was a standard price, which was fine. I was annoyed about my set. Next time I'm BUYING mine from Costco for even cheaper!! NOT COOL, especially when we returned our set to the Koloa location and they DID have a list of advertised prices and levels, and it was WAY CHEAPER!!! What can I say about Snorkel Bob's... ? Not much since I never got to use the snorkeling equipment. The day we rented the equipment a storm hit the island and made the ocean water red and murky. All the beaches were closed to snorkeling so for the 3 days we had the equipment we didn't get to use it... Oh well. However, the sales guy there was very nice and helpful. I thought this place was reasonably priced ; 3 days for 2 good sets of gear for about $50. I would go to Snorkel Bobs again, but when there is no storm headed to Kauai. Solid gear, good price, can return at multiple locations. Customer service is patient with good advice on how to use the equipment and which beaches to visit. Negative - the other snorkel shop has coupon discounts in tourist magazines that make it cheaper to rent there. We always bring our own mask and snorkel but rent fins and other items if needed. Snorkel Bob has never disappointed. Easy to rent, easy to return, even after hours drop system. They are eco-minded, really care for the health of the reefs too, and give good advice about which spots might be good to try. Joe at this store was a bit more, um, assertive than we'd experienced before regarding offering to help us book a trip with one of the island's excursion vendors. Not pushy, just assertive. He seemed to have experience with a number of the boat trips and we went with his recommendation. Well, everyone has to make a living. The experience on that boat trip overall was fine.
