We always bring our own mask and snorkel but rent fins and other items if needed. Snorkel Bob has never disappointed. Easy to rent, easy to return, even after hours drop system. They are eco-minded, really care for the health of the reefs too, and give good advice about which spots might be good to try. Joe at this store was a bit more, um, assertive than we'd experienced before regarding offering to help us book a trip with one of the island's excursion vendors. Not pushy, just assertive. He seemed to have experience with a number of the boat trips and we went with his recommendation. Well, everyone has to make a living. The experience on that boat trip overall was fine. And Snorkel Bob threw in a complimentary wet suit top rental to help cinch the deal. read more

This is my second go around with Snorkel Bob's (the first being on the Big Island). Both times I was met by extremely helpful staff that were more than willing to help me find the best snorkel spots and enjoy my time on the island. At this location, we were helped with Melissa who assidted me in finding the right setup (regular flippers + the split mask) and my boyfriend who wanted to splurge and get the more high tech setup. She also gave us some tips on local restaurants and activities which turned out to be really helpful. The pricing is fair and they have a 24/7 return box for when you need to drop off after hours. Also the "lend" you defogger for free which is super helpful- you just have to make sure to return it to them. We'll definitely continue using Snorkel Bob's for all of our snorkeling needs. read more

The response posted by the shop is fair enough BUT why is it when you walk in, there are no prices posted and you have to ask? The snorkel sets are very clearly separate and it would be easy to put a $15 $25 $35 price on each level. The reason they don't is the upsell and that's the rub. read more

My wife and I went into the store to inquire about SNUBA and snorkeling. The individual behind the counter was on the phone. He ask what he could help with and I told him to go ahead with his phone call. At the end of his call, I ask him if they did SNUBA and he replied no. I then ask him if he knew of any place that does and he BLUNTLY replied no and immediately began to make another call. Rather than ask him about the snorkeling I just walked out of the store as I did not appreciate his attitude. Their gear my be good and cheap, but their customer service in that instance sucked. Snorkel Bob's Kapaa - Snorkling tour booked through Snorkel Bob's - Snorkeling Near Me - Kapaa, Hawaii

I've rented from Snorkel Bob's a few times now, most recently last week. This last time might be my last, not sure. So here is the deal. When you rent the upgraded version of equipment and pay the premium, almost $250/wk for a family of four plus lookie board, you expect that equipment to work pretty flawlessly with rare exception. If you have for example purchased a parking pass at Ke'e Beach, or lucked out to find that last parking spot at Tunnels, you can't just get that day back again. You need equipment that works flawlessly the first time. That said, both me and my husband's mask and snorkel leaked. Mine was worse so I got it exchanged. The Koloa location showed me how the silicone flap on the snorkel was all floppy. Possibly it is inevitable they get that way. But it just doesn't look like good design to me. The Koloa location also exchanged my mask. On the next trip out, the snorkel worked better but not flawlessly, but the mask still leaked. I like the salesperson at the Kapaa location, Richard. I think his dry wit and directness is sometimes misinterpreted as unfriendliness. But he is not forthcoming with insider tips. I don't think it is just him. I think a number of folks living on the island are a bit ptsd over the after affects of the flood of 2018, and coping with the difficulty living with tourists day in and day out. Most locals, including concierges are not open to providing you the information you really want, like just how early you have to leave in order to get a parking spot at Tunnels for example. They are instead looking out for their survival, and thus, pushing the helicopter rides and luaus. It is a sad state of affairs but general throughout the island and not specific to this individual. Some things I like about this brand is the quirkiness of Snorkel Bob himself, the commitment to reef awareness, and integrity in not supplying those killer full-face snorkel masks. But I ask Snorkel Bob to consider the danger to reef when equipment does not function and you have to readjust mask and snorkel every minute or two hoping not to kick a reef in the process. So I'm going to take a wait and see before our next trip. If it appears there is some upgrade in the equipment I may check it out again. I do like the Snorkel Bob enterprise and Richard, and hope for the best. read more

We went to rent snorkel gear on a windy day, and they suggested we come back the following day as we'd just be wasting our money. They give you a guide to the marine life you might see, maps and directions to the best beaches, quick lessons if you're a novice... Great service, all around. The first time I walked into Snorkel Bob's and we inquired about snorkeling, I was blown away by the advice given to us by the employee that appeared to be the manager at the time. He actually told us that the current day was not very good for snorkeling due to the weather a few days ago and we should come back tomorrow, also saving a bit of money. That really struck me because he lost a day's sale for four rentals, which is a significant amount. He was nice enough to save us money, time, and stress even though it meant the loss of one day's worth of a sale. The store itself seems very well put together. It is clean and pretty well organized, with snorkels and other gear tucked away either hanging from the ceiling or the walls. They have a good variety of equipment available for rental, and it all appears to be in great shape. Overall, I am very impressed by this establishment and would definitely return when I [hopefully] have the chance to return to Kauai someday. (They have locations on the other islands as well, but I haven't seen any of them so I don't know anything about them) Also worth noting is that the gear can supposedly be returned to any of their locations, even on a different island from the original rental. read more

We went here to rent some cheapie snorkel gear for the week. This place delivered! The 9$ a week gear worked fine and made for some awesome snorkeling experiences. I thought the guy who was working there seemed a bit bored or upset with his job....not super friendly, but he got us what we needed and sent us on our way and that's all I can really ask. This was our first stop when we arrived in Kauai - one of the best decisions we made! Great gear to rent for the week that won't break the bank! We rented snorkel gear, a couple of beach chairs, and booked a helicopter tour through Snorkel Bob's. The beach chairs were definitely clutch - better than laying towels down on the sand when we can have a nice chair to sit and relax in! We used the gear we rented EVERYDAY. I don't know what we would have done if we didn't stop here first. The return was easy too - we were able to slide the gear in the express return slot after they closed. This allowed us to use the gear up to the last minute we were staying in Kauai! Definitely a place we will come back to for gear. read more

Snorkel Bob's was located just outside our resort (and pretty conveniently for anyone, on the main road in Kapa'a) and so we stopped there when needing somewhere to rent some snorkel equipment. I had some fins so just needed a not crappy mask (which is what I had otherwise) and the guy offered me a regular mask or a prescription type mask since I wore glasses. I opted for the latter so he took my glasses, glanced through them for a minute and handed me a mask and it was spot on. Pretty much a perfect match for my glasses. I got the mask, snorkel and some defogging gunk to go with them. The price for a day was just something like 12-13 bucks. Not bad at all. We went snorkeling and the mask and snorkel were awesome. I had a great time and the equipment worked great. Dropped it off the next day when I was done and that was that. Perfect! Mo only real complaint is that getting in and out of their parking can be a pain cause the road is busy. But that's not much of a complaint. If you are needing some equipment while on Kauai, Snorkel Bob's is a great choice! read more

This is definitely the way to go if you want to snorkel in Kauai, especially now that the airlines are getting so strict on luggage weight. Family of five - one boy with size 14 feet, and also a petite size 00 girl, They were able to fit us all - quickly. The equipment was $9 each, in GREAT shape. We paid an extra $5 for a wetsuit top that we didn't need, but it was great to have "just in case". They threw in free defog drops. Returning the gear after-hours was simple. The service was great and very helpful. We went during a sketchy time of year, with one never-before snorkeler, and we were given great advice about where we should go for the best and safest experience. It was awesome. We saw sea turtles every day! Plus lots of great fish, and a crazy eel. We have rented in other places on previous trips (and also brought our own equipment from home). We rented 5 sets of snorkel gear. Then drove up to Princeville. But one of the sets was defective. Richard the shop offered to drive a new set up to us, even though it was a 40 minute drive (one way). We were able to rent a replacement locally, but was impressed that Richard was willing to drive us up a replacement. When we returned the gear, Richard refunded us the entire weekly rental for the one set that was defective. They are a bit pricey, but their service makes up for it. read more

I go the basic snorkel gear and was very happy with it. My husband upgraded because he couldn't get a good seal over the mustache. They had plenty in stock and gave us some good advice about which beaches were best for this time of year. Anini beach was fabulous. We ended up spending most of a day there. I did not get a good feeling from the owner. I had reserved a pair of fins by email. When we got to the store, he tried to sell me excursions such as tubing and zip lining tours. Really, dude?? I had just gotten off the plane. I was not ready for this kind of pushy sales in such a peaceful island. I had already booked all of our tours well in advance after researching all of the options on Yelp and other sites. He then trash talked about the particular zip line company that I booked and tried selling his tour, telling me that "I don't like them. My guys are much better than that company". I explained to him that most zip line companies had age and weight limits (for my 9 year old son, who wanted to zip line solo and not tandem). He basically said those rules are just b.s. and most companies will just let you go solo anyway, even if you don't make the weight requirement. (if you don't meet the minimum weight requirement, you may stall and not reach the other side, that's why they have a weight requirement) I say, HE is the one bull sh*tting and if that's true, I definitely would NOT trust the zip line company that he wants to recommend if they don't abide by the safety rules. I knew he just wanted to make extra money, so when I told him I'm not interested, he backed off and attended someone else in the store. The zip line company (Just Live!) that I booked turned out wonderful, by the way. One of the fins we rented turned out to be too small, so I had to stop by the following day to replace it. Overall, my experience was meh. Next time I am in Kauai, I will steer clear of this business with a dishonest owner. read more

I accidentally drove past Boss Frogs and decided to park in the parking lot next door which happened to be Snorkel Bob's. The older gentleman walked out to ask what I was doing and I kindly apologized for taking a spot (parking lot was EMPTY) and that I was waiting for my husband who was renting boogie boards for the kids next door. This man was extremely rude about me taking a spot in his empty parking lot and told me "well ma'am it's like parking in a Burger King parking lot if you plan to eat at McDonald's next door" yes, I get it and I should've turned when I needed to and parked in the correct parking lot but pulling out on the highway to park 10 feet over in boss frogs in a giant SUV was ridiculous. I'm so thankful we gave boss frogs our business. Sounds like other customers felt he was pushy and rude as well. read more

Just to be completely honest: I was originally going to rent a snorkel set from Boss Frogs right across the parking lot. When I went into the Boss Frog store, I was waiting there and was not even acknowledged. The lady was too busy talking about a wedding to the customers - she gave me the, "can't you see I'm talking" look. So I left. Went around the fence and entered Snorkel Bob's. The guy behind the counter was super chill, and explained my options. He was so cool and helpful, I didn't end up renting the equipment - I purchased everything top-end. Rented equipment this morning to use near our hotel. The staff was friendly and the service was great, not sure what happened to other customers. Prices were competitive. Maybe a buck or two higher, but the convenience is worth a dollar. We also asked where to go (wanted to walk) and they sent us to the park south of our hotel down a bike path. It was great. For less than the price of a lunch it was the best couple hours of our trip so far. We also put them to use behind our hotel and it was amazing the amount of fish just off the shore. read more

At first there was sticker shock. Then some more sticker shock. I thought I was getting swindled but based on others recommendation I went with it. In hindsight this proved to be a very good idea. These people know what they're talking about. The beach chairs they talked me in to proved to be an invaluable asset. Their knowledge of all the charters and activities around the island was dead on. Not a good place to rent. Rude, expensive and pushy. They expected to pay more and wondered why we questioned the prices. When we said we could find the same gear less expensive (snorkel depot) for the same quality of equipment they were pushing theirs as better and we couldn't find it less even though we went to the shop next door for less. Snorkel bob was $45 a week next door was $35 and snorkel depot was $20 for a week and the same quality. read more

What I love most (besides the excellent service!!) is that you can take your gear with you from one island to the next and return it at a different store - they even have a drop box!! Spend the extra money at Snorkel Bob's; it is so worth it!!! Rented three sets for the week and we had a great time snorkeling, not a single issue. After turning in our stuff, we decided to save some money and go to another place in town with cheaper rates, and rented out sets for the day so we could hit our last must-do spot, Tunnels. MISTAKE! the guys there were super nice, but the gear wasn't up to par... With the gear from the other unnamed place, each of us had at least one problem, including foggy masks, a painful mask pushing up at the bottom of my nose no matter how I adjusted it, and pain from the fins. I would have given 5 stars to Bob's had the worker smiled even once. He was very professional, almost too much so. We were the only ones there so he could have relaxed a bit. Learn from our lesson and rent from someone else on the island. I've rented from Snorkel Bob's before in both Maui and Oahu with good success. I urge you not to rent from the Snorkel Bob's in Kapaa. I take some of the responsibility for not researching rates and doing my homework. They overcharged us and even if they had not, we came across many deals on the island that were considerably cheaper. I felt extremely taken and went back mid-week to discuss the charges. They would not make any accomodations. When I went to return our stuff they said we rented more masks and snorkels than we did. After 10 minutes during which time the guy said that perhaps they had overcharged us, they came back and said it was a keystroke error and that we had indeed returned what we rented (I already knew this). They still would not change the exhorbanant bill (over $250 for two + snorkel sets and 3 boogie boards for a week). In Kapaa they rent full snorkel sets for substantially less for the week. (keep driving North about 2-3 miles). The places in Hanalei at the Northern part of the island also offer much better deals. If you're headed South, rent in Popiu. I realize Kauai is expensive and expect this when I vacation here. Seldom though have I felt like someone was taking advantage of me with little remorse. read more

I do a lot of open water swimming in the Puget Sound where I live and have always had trouble with goggles leaking. On a whim, I bought some new goggles at Snorkel Bob's while on vacation and they turned out to be amazing! After I got home, I decided I wanted to get a pair for my husband too but couldn't locate them online. I called Snorkel Bob's and sent Richard a picture and he was kind enough to find them, process my order over the phone, and ship them out. Great customer service! read more

We ended up bringing back one of the snorkel sets as it wasn't working as well as we'd like, and she refunded us that portion. Last 2 days of vacation here on Kauai, we decided to rent beach chairs. No problem they said. We paid for a 2 day rental. We picked the chairs up at 11 am on Tues., 4/26 and were told we needed to bring them back by 5pm closing time on Weds., 4/27. When we took them back today (4/27) at 3pm, Richard told my husband we needed to pay for an additional day because they should have been brought by 11 am today. There was no arguing with him. People are only as good as their word. Snorkel Bobs Kapaa is not the place to rent anything. They just screwed another tourist. I hope this saves you from the bad feelings we left with. read more
