If you accidentally find yourself at the Navy Pier--which, I hope you don't because it's lame--Snow Dragon might be a saving grace for you. It wasn't for me, mind you, but to each their own. The menu is impressive enough for what is basically a glamorous concession stand: there are macarons (in boring flavors), frozen yogurt, bubble tea, macaron ice cream sandwiches (I wish I'd gotten that because I like boring flavors), and shaved snow. Macarons and bubble tea seem to be all over the place now and I didn't try those things here, because it annoys me when certain foods are served because it's "trendy". Regarding the shaved snow, I think it's trying to be something in between shaved ice and ice cream. I commend the originality, but I found it lacking. I was frustrated that it was too icey to be substantial, yet also too thick to be refreshing. The condensed milk and the mochi added variety, but I'm so difficult to please that I'm still acting all complainy about the experience here. I must be a nightmare to date. Also, expect typical teenage staff that can't be bothered to provide decent service because they're getting a text and can't get away from you fast enough so they can just check it. This place is amazing. The ice cream is Hershey's Ice cream, which is very hard to find and premium (hence the price) so it's delicious. The shaved snow is great. I love the variety of macaroons. I honestly thought this place was going to be like a typical shaved ice establishment. I've had shaved ice several times from different places and to me it's always just lackluster. The first couple of bites are good and then you get further down and the syrup/toppings start disappearing and it just becomes ice. Snow Dragon Shavery solves that problem. When I waited in line I saw other people ordering ahead of me and watched as they were served bowls of vibrantly colored shaved snow. Now shaved snow is different from shaved ice. With shaved ice you generally shave the ice and put the toppings on it. With shaved snow, the flavors are mixed into a milk and water based and then frozen. The frozen concoction is then shaved (as the name implies) which results in a dessert that is the cross between ice cream and shaved ice. I had never had this before so this was all new to me. I ordered the watermelon and my partner ordered the mango. Both looked very pretty and akin to the colors one would expect of mango and watermelon. They didn't put any fresh fruit on it (little disappointed) but instead put the respective fruit flavored boba (little beads filled with flavored juice that burst in your mouth) and jellies (little candy-like squares of jelly) on top. I think there might have been mochi (small rice cake pieces that are really fun to chew on) too. I took one bite and was sold. It tasted strongly of watermelon which I loved. The texture was so interesting. One would expect it to crunch like shaved ice, but instead it has a different texture to it. Think of chewing on snow and that's kind of how it feels to eat it. The jellies/boba/mochi added a fun texture change here and there but didn't make or break the dessert. My partners mango tasted exactly like mango so I imagine most of the flavors are spot on here. The dessert was super refreshing while also have substance to it which I feel that shaved ice misses a lot. The quantity was very large I thought and the price was a little high, but it was navy pier and that was expected. I loved this place and if not for the fact that I live in the suburbs, I'd be coming here a lot. Give it a chance before you turn tail after reading the other reviews. read more

It makes me so sad that we still have to almost beg people to try shaved snow. It's so tasty!!! That said, though the portion sizes at Snow Dragon are pretty good, the quality of the snow and the toppings are not the best. Also it's kind of expensive for less than fresh ingredients. To keep portions consistent, they have little pre-portioned pods that they shave up instead of that giant slab I'm used to seeing. Doesn't have the same effect, imo. But still, it's nice to have a change from the usual cold dessert options and I'll just blame the Navy Pier prime location for the price hike. read more

There were both bad and good experiences, however, the bad out weighed the good. My first time in Chicago and I decided to visit the Navy Pier. As I was exploring I found this store that sells Boba, which I am great fan of. I had my family with me and they were working with 1 tiny blender to make our drinks which took about 15 minutes and when we finally got it, the straws were too small for the Boba to pass through and the flavor tested very artificial and was really unpleasant. The kids didn't even enjoy it! Although the Boba was horrible i did try they're Macaroons and those were pretty good. Get anything but Boba and you should be fine. read more

I ordered a nitrogen mango goddess with gelato today. Once I received it, it was already turning into soup. I met my boyfriend at Frio Gelato which was at the end of the pier. By then, my mango goddess was mostly liquid. We walked back to the shop to see if they had any tops so I could at least put it in my freezer. The workers told me they didn't. One of the main reasons why I'm giving them a 1 star was because of the young, dark haired, female worker working the cash register who gave me attitude when I asked if it was supposed to be melting this fast. She said "it's gelato, it melts!" Yeah captain obvious we know that. But why not explain it in a professional manner and with less attitude. The rest of the workers were nice and polite. Not a great place for bubble tea. The flavor of the milk tea was okay, but the employee put about 8 tapioca pearls in my drink and refused to add more upon request. Luckily, the tapioca pearls tasted like metal so not getting more ended up working out. Also, it's important to know that the "tea" is not really tea. Well I came for the hype and won't be returning. I got the vanilla shaved ice which is worth the hoopla if you have never had shaved ice before but is something I could honestly do without. The good: I got the mango shave. It is pretty good. I haven't really tried any other shaved iced so I can't really compare. It tastes like mango ice cream but just...shaved. It came with tapioca, little mochis, and mango jelly. The customer service was good also. The bad: The smoothies. I got the Taro Smoothie with Tapioca. Please do not get the smoothies. I usually get my smoothies from Joy Yee and really wanted one so I got one here instead. It's pretty much water, ice, and powder. It was so watered down that it just tasted like taro flavored water. Yuck! The tapioca was hard also. I haven't tried the macaroons. Maybe, just maybe I'll try it one day. read more

Yes, it is a little overpriced but this is one of only two places I know of to get bubble tea with actual bubbles within walking distance in Streeterville. The bubble tea itself (i've tried taro and thai) tastes excellent, although it does come off a little artificial- I'm not sure how much actual tea was used vs powder. I've had the taro shaved ice before too and that was delicious as well, but again a little pricey. The best part about snow dragon tho is the older gentleman who mans the cash register. He's hilarious and never fails to throw a few jokes my way every time I order. read more

The ice cream flavors inside the macaroons weren't very special. Mine was cookies and cream. If they could develop some interesting flavors or even get those interesting flavors supplied by a different ice cream house, the macaroon ice cream sandwich could be pretty special. The (probably owner) was rude to the old lady in front of us asking what mochi are. It should have been the first sign of trouble. Instead, we stayed and asked for two mango boba teas. They were SO watered down I only knew it was mango bc of the receipt I got after placing my order. For the first time ever, I didn't even get one tapioca ball whilst drinking.
