Potstickers were good, sweet and sour pork was good, fried rice was good and Mongolian beef was bad, grey and chewy. Very fatty. Server was kind at first but must have thought we were tourists or something because when it came time to pay' she added a couple dollars to the prices of our dishes, on-top of that she attempted to over charge by $10 and when I pointed it out she acted surprised and fixed it to the correct price. When I asked her to pay the bill in half with 2 cards (my cousin and I split the bill) she acted like it was a hassle, but did let us pay with our 2 cards. After paying she asked if the tip I left was all she was going to get. I told her "well that's kind of rude, I can just take the tip back then" and she handed it back to me. I don't appreciate being asked to leave more of a tip than I already did after getting mid food/service from an unhelpful and weird waitress who had an AirPod in her ear the whole time. read more

I am glad i came into Snow Garden for lunch on a whim because not many chefs will honor my request for low salt, low oil and no MSG in my food. I ordered off the lunch special menu and asked the server to limit the salt, oil and MSG. She smiles and said, "your food will be bland." I was pleased and shocked that the chef listened as I am so used to being ignored that I had 0 expectation this restaurant would be different. I told the server that I will be coming back often. This location was in China Town, it's been a while since I found an authentic chines food establishment until today. Jokes aside, there were two older women in the back making the food and when I say, "this felt like a grandma made some old authentic food"! Grandmas cooking just hit right lol. The eggs rolls were so light and flaky and just SOO yummy and came out hot and cooked to order. Their sauce seemed to be house made? It was a little thicker in consistency for their egg roll dipping sauce which I enjoyed. The sweet and sour pork was definitely made fresh and to order. The sweet and sour pork had a crunch to it, YET it wasn't dried out, it tasted so fresh and prepared for order vs it sitting under a heat lamp like a lot of other establishments I've seen now a days. That's when the sweet and sour pork usually gets mushy and soaked in sauce. This was a perfect amount of crispyness and then dipped in sauce, cooked to order type of food. The sweet and sour pork was over a bed of white rice and had a fair amount of pork for being a "for one/individual lunch special". We also got the Mongolian beef. The beef wasn't chewy like I've had at other places and the flavor hit just right as well. The service was very kind and fast, the place felt clean and the ambiance in china town hit just right. It's been a while since we sat at a Chinese food place and said "this hit the spot and we need to come back" but I now know where to go to get some good Chinese food at a reasonable price. I'd give this place a 4 star rating, a 5 if the Mongolian beef had a bit more beef and spicier(like it mentioned on the menu, it didn't really have a spice) read more

We were in San Francisco and asked AI to point us toward authentic Chinese food good for newbies--Snow Garden came up, and we're so glad it did! We stopped in around 4:45pm on a Friday, and while the restaurant was quiet, the server was sweet and welcoming. We grabbed takeout and were blown away by how fresh everything tasted. We ordered chicken & broccoli, sweet & sour chicken, chicken fried rice, and mixed vegetables. The dishes were flavorful, noticeably less oily, and even the fried items tasted lighter than what we're used to back home. It's clearly an authentic spot, but still totally approachable and perfect for newbies who might feel overwhelmed trying something new in Chinatown. When in San Francisco I like walk around Chinatown searching for an authentic looking smaller sized restaurant which appears to be frequented by locals. No planning, no research. Menu in the window which sounds good. That's how I ended up inside Snow Garden. I had the Chicken Chow Mein and an appetizer of potstickers. Service was fast as was the kitchen. It was too much for one person to eat but it was so tasty I managed to. I will be making another visit before returning home. Combo #2 was basic good oily Chinese food at a fair price and everything was acceptable except for the Mongolian Beef where 90% of the meat was discarded as inedible meat along with a weak tasting sauce. The price of the food was definitely affordable averaging $20 per adult. We ordered house fried rice, house chow mein, orange chicken, Broccoli beef, and the entire table agreed to exceptional authentic flavor. Taking a stroll from our hotel we ended up in Chinatown. How does one choose? Yelp of course! Unfortunately the map didn't populate well here for us. We read the menu boards out front of several places and decided to give this place a try. Service was prompt, with hot tea brought out with the menus. We decided on our entrees and while we were waiting we heard a commotion outside. They were setting up for a street celebration with drums and dragons. So we really had dinner and a show. We were told that it happens every Friday and Saturday night. Out dinner was served while we stood on the sidewalk watching the show. My wife ordered chicken with double mushrooms and I had the beef and broccoli and hot and sour soup. ( delicious ) Plenty to share and we still brought almost 1/2 back to the room with us. My family and I had a wonderful meal here last night. Everything we ordered was excellent. We ate Orange chicken, Mongolian beef, salt and pepper pork chop, sweet and sour pork, and pork fried rice. It was our first meal in China Town and the taste was elevated to a level that I've not had in San Diego over the past 20 years. Weirdly, a lot of places in Chinatown closed early so by 6:30-7 on a Sunday, this was one of the only places we could find still open. It was busy so we figured why not, give it a try. The food wasn't bad really, but the wait was so long that we literally saw many tables get up and leave. We waited over an hour for our food and saw some people who got there after us get their food first which was annoying. I ordered the orange chicken and my husband got the chicken lo mein - his was better than mine but mine still wasn't that bad. I believe there probably are better Chinese places in Chinatown but will have to wait until our next trip back to find out for sure. read more

A San Francisco China Town delight if you are in the mood, it is cash only, English speaking friendly and good food. Every seat in this little restaurant was full and the place was busy. I tend to prefer sticky rice but they put on a fried rice that was light and pleasantly surprising as it was served with their combo for 2. Service was done with a smile and they were very attentive. Had chicken with black bean sauce and friend had shredded pork soup with turnip (except they were out of turnip). My chicken was mostly dark meat and in chunks, not thin slices, which is probably why it wasn't velveted and was therefore not tender. The sauce was not favorable at all. Very disappointed. Because they were out of turnips they said they'd include bok choy in my friend's soup, but when it came out there were bean sprouts instead of bok choy. We ordered a the lunch special. The g/f had some sort of noodles with beef, can't recall the exact name. I ordered a curry chicken with white rice. It's east asian style curry chicken so it's more watered down. I liked my curry chicken. I asked for mild, and it delivers. The chicken itself was very fresh. I chow that down within a couple minutes. Meanwhile, the g/f did not like her noodles with beef at all. She said it was tasteless, it lack sauce, and looks nothing like the photo. The server was an older gentleman. He was pleasant with us, maybe because I'm able to speak Chinese?? It was an okay place for cheap lunch. read more

Walnut Shrimp...Delicious. Shrimp Fried Rice...Delicious. Bathroom...Pretty Clean. This is what I picture the typical Chinatown restaurant to look like. Reasonably inexpensive, not super clean or super dirty.. and nice big pictures of Chinese things all over the restaurant. The place was not too crowded either. In case you're not sure where it is, just walk past the lady yelling about $3.95 dim sum (which is way too expensive for dim sum however, it is all day dim sum) and its right next door. By far my favorite Chinese restaurant. Will return and hopefully try everything on the menu. The Walnut Shrimp was very good, not too much mayo which is a pet peeve of mine. And, the walnuts were not too sweet either. I eaten a lot of Walnut Shrimps at a dozen or so fancy Chinese Restaurants and Snow Garden had the best I've ever had...so far. read more
