The Mongolian beef was tender with the perfect balance of sweet and savory, the rice was cooked perfectly, and the hot and sour soup was some of the best I've had in a long time. This place tastes like my mom's cooking to me in the absolute best way. It has authentic Chinese home cooking vibes that you can't really find at a lot of restaurants these days. I'd recommend getting a couple different dishes and some fried rice or plain rice and just go to town! I loved the Hunan pork belly and would definitely try the smoked pork belly too. Thought of checking out this restaurant for my mom's belated 94th birthday today. I used to dine at this restaurant with my former colleagues many years ago under the name Henry's Hunan. And now it is SoHunan. My recollection it was bigger but the restaurant now is small and tight. The servers were fixing the table where we can have a space for mom's wheelchair. The 4 of us finally sat down. The decor is the normal Chinese accents. We asked for hot tea first and the server came with a teakettle. The spoons given were like there are stains from being old that we did not use it. We asked the server for mild preparation. We started with Meat Pie. We also Henry's Special, Humana Dumplings, Salt & Pepper Beef w/ Hunan Pickles, Salt & Pepper Pork Ribs, and steamed rice. We ordered for mom the Fresh Egg Drop Soup. The flavors were delicious but little spicy although we asked for mild. We had to ask for more napkins as we felt our mouth was on little fire but bearable. Service was good. I was told by the server to pay the bill at the cashier. There was the automatic 20% tip for party of 5. I did not realize asking for a 2nd teakettle had a minimum charge. I was very satisfied with the Hunan cuisine offered here, as an avid fan of spicy food, everything was perfect. I also ordered some of their house tea which I found to be very enjoyable on a cold winter day. Please keep in mind that this restaurant is quite busy during dinner time, so expect a long wait for, especially if you have a large party size. I personally didn't want to wait 45 minutes to be sat, so I was able to quickly order and received my food to go within 10 minutes which was surprisingly fast. I found this spot on Yelp while I was craving Chinese food and since I love spicy dishes, Hunan cuisine felt like the perfect choice. We stopped by on a Thursday around 4pm, and it was totally empty, so we got to sit wherever we wanted. The menu had so many things that looked good, we decided to just go for it and try a bunch. We ordered the Hunan dumplings, kung pao chicken, smoked pork belly, chicken chow mein, and Hunan pork belly. The food came out fast, maybe 15 minutes tops, and every dish was delicious. If you're looking for Hunan style Chinese food, this definitely is the place to be. They have two menu, the Chinese menu and the English menu, ask for the Chinese menu because the spice level is much spicier. The restaurant is nice and clean with an upper level for additional seatings for bigger parties. Is the upper levels ada accessible? Not really, its a flight of stairs but the first floor seating should hopefully accommodate that. The staff all are very sweet and diligent. As a concierge working at a luxury hotel nearby on California Street, I've been looking for some better than R & G Lounge or at least similar type Chinese restaurants within walking distance that isn't a hole in the wall. Looking for some place that I can recommend as an alternative to R & G lounge to our distinguished guests somewhere around Kearny and Sacramento Street away from the Chinatown crowds. And this is not it. Upstairs dining room is spacious and modern, but you really have to ask for it. There is no sign, only a small door. Today I asked if I could eat upstairs but he didn't really tell me where it was until a group of Chinese diners came and went straight upstairs. New Hunan fast-casual counter-service restaurant in the FiDi, right near the big 555 California office building. Love the clean aesthetics and quick food preparation. Feels different from other Chinese restaurants nearby, but the modernity doesn't sacrifice its yummy regional specialization at all. Hot & Sour Soup: A small bowl of this came for free. It had the signature viscous texture along all the squishy bits to chew on like mushroom and egg strands. It also had a very nice spicy flair to it. A great way to get ready for the main course. Hunan Dumplings: Breaking the trend of the other dishes, these weren't really spicy. A bunch of freshly boiled dumplings in a soy and vinegar sauce. Very fresh and meaty. A great supplement to your meal. Smoked Pork Belly: I appreciate how hard this dish is to find, so was glad they specialized in it. One of the other former Henry's Hunan locations in SOMA was one of our favorite dining experiences to date, so we were excited to try out this rendition. It was peak dinner hour in Chinatown on a Friday, and nearby restaurants were all pretty packed, including this one! We were lucky enough to nab two counter seats walking in. The food here was solid, but given the casual environment and relatively high prices for portions that are not that large, I was hoping to enjoy the dishes more. The spicy cod was a bit dry, with the price of the entree totaling about $2-3 per piece of cod. However, the extra rice here was a huge portion that could feed more than two people at $3 a bowl, which I rarely see at other restaurants. Competition is incredibly tough and expensive in SF's Chinatown because there are so many restaurants with a vast variety of food options. Despite our experience, it looks like other reviewers have really enjoyed the other dishes at this place, so it's definitely still worth a try! Service here was friendly and quick. A family-owned and run authentic Hunan restaurant. There's the grab-and-go lunch area on the 1st floor, and an more secluded dinner dining area on the 2nd floor. Quiet atmosphere which is great for conversations. Service was by the family members and they were the some of the most hospitable I've encountered in a restaurant. I went with friends for dinner, and dishes were a little slow to come out, though it's likely since we did have fun with ordering some custom dishes while chatting with the owner on Hunan cuisine. It reminded me much more of dining with relatives than dining at restaurant. If you love Hunan food with an amazing flavor, I don't think you can go wrong with their grab-and-go lunch. However, if you want a more social/intimate dining experience with other Hunan enthusiasts, stop by around dinnertime. read more
