A few days ago, I noticed a larger amount of bees flying around my backyard, than there usually are. I saw that they were hanging around a large plastic utility box behind my garage, so I opened the lid to see what they found so enticing. As soon as I opened the lid, I saw a whole city of bees (buzzing very loudly), complete with a fully-formed hive. So I closed the lid, and searched the Internet for a service that captures bees, but does not kill them. Unfortunately, the first company I called just had a voicemail recording. Since this was a fairly urgent matter, I didn't bother leaving a message, because I wanted to talk to someone right away. I then found "So Cal Bees" on Yelp. They had good reviews, so I called them, and Cesar Castellanos immediately answered. (In addition to doing bee removals and rescues, Cesar is also a Master Beekeeper.) I explained my situation to him; he said that he was on his way to another customer's house, and that he would come to my house after that. A few minutes later, he showed up at my house. I am not exaggerating when I say that he was probably the nicest guy I've ever met. He checked out my bees, offered me a very reasonable price, and brought in his equipment. He explained everything that he was doing, including educating me on bee-havior (couldn't resist that one). He had a box with some honey in it, to tempt the bees into it, and also had some spray for the hive area, which contained a smell that bees don't like. He said that he would return around 7 PM to collect the bee box. I had an event to go to, so I was not home when he took the box, but when I returned, I saw that he had cut the hive off of the box, cleaned everything up, and taken the bees. I highly recommend Cesar at So Cal Bees, for this kind of thing. I'm so glad that a service like this is available to rescue the bees instead of killing them. It was actually worth it, just for his master class on bee behavior/physiology. I will definitely use Cesar again, then next time I am bee-set by my flying friends (sorry, last pun).
