Went canyoneering with Pete and Kyle this past weekend plus another 11 people. I wasn't sure at first because our meeting place was in a shopping complex. But after the briefing, we're told we were the most on time or even early group that arrived for many trips they had, even the day before, they started at 11.30, instead of 9.30am. The briefing took about 15-30minutes to make sure everyone knows about the safety and addressed any concerns that they might have before heading up to the mountain. We're then followed them to their car to get the gears for each person. Once everyone got their gears and everything is cleared, we all got our cars lined up behind their Honda Fit and drove up to Mt Baldy. We got there like around 9.30-9.45 ish, and started hiking around 10. It was a pretty steep hill to hike and lots of rocks, so better wear shoes with good grip. Also, this was actually a beginner canyoneering so don't worry about bringing your own rock climbing shoes. Just make sure you bring sunscreen, hat and make sure your bag is waterproof or water resistant, because you'd be going down a waterfall. After climbing for about maybe 45minutes or so, we finally reached the top of the San Antonio waterfalls and both Kyle and Pete started setting up the ropes. They also told us what we need to do and watch out for before sending the first person to go down. There were a total of 4 waterfall to traverse, but the 2nd and 4th were the best, we really got soaked!!! They were also the tallest ones, so if you have a gopro or camera, it would be best to take them during that 2 rappels. I got stuck on the last rappel and I wasn't scared or anything, just curious how to get down and somehow they managed to do something with the ropes, got me down safely. I would totally recommend them if you want some adventure around LA. They're very credible and they have many levels of canyoneering to try as well. They recommend us to try the second level, which is at Eaton Canyon but we have to hike about 10miles round trip, which made me guess myself if I want to go. At least if I'm looking for something fun to do, now I know who to look for. If they're nice and you feel they give you good service, please tip them. I'm (almost exclusively) an indoor, top-rope climber - not really the adventurous type. But a friend who is new to the sport wanted to try climbing outside. Since we don't own any gear we decided to try a guided trip. This was fun. The hike into the climbing area was easy and beautiful. The climbs were difficult but achievable. The day was just about perfect. I think my favorite thing was that the guides let us set the pace. Pete would give us options and say "What sounds like fun next?" There was no pressure to follow a specific agenda - and when one in our group was done climbing and just wanted to hang around - that was cool too. When I read some of the other reviews here about 200ft rappels I was worried I would be outside my comfort zone all day - I can be really difficult when I get scared - so I told them what I wanted and that's exactly what I got. An easy, fun day outside with some cool people and no pressure. The guides were friendly and funny, they were more than prepared, and they definitely made the day for me. Next time I go climbing outdoors - it'll be with So Cal Adventure Co. They know what they are doing. read more

Having never Trad. Climbed before I decided to hire these guys for a day trip to New Jack City, out in Lucerne Valley. I had sooooooo much fun! And I have already set up a canyoneering trip for next month. Positives: They brought all the necessary gear and then some. They were patient, professional and balanced with group. (They spent extra time with those that were more novice at climbing, while not making it boring for the more experienced climbers.) They genuinely seemed to be having as much fun as we were. Negatives: Pretty stringent refund policy. (Which I guess I understand) They don't have upcoming trips posted on there website, so it makes it a pain to find when the trips are planned. read more

It's the next level up beyond hiking where you venture through canyons, fly off natural water slides and repel canyons to get through otherwise unhikable trails. So yah, that what we did. An 8 hour event right behind LA: repelled 5 waterfalls jumped into 3 ponds, and scaled mountains all guided by the most precessional and well prepared crew.You gotta be semi in shape for this one. read more

My husband and I went canyoneering with Pete and Dave this past weekend and it was awesome!! They're super friendly and knowledgable. We got lucky and were the only two in the group so we got to breeze through the rappelling without waiting for others. Since our group was so small, we also got to test try 3-4 additional rappels off the itinerary with them, which they've also never done before. One was like 140' high, so crazy and thrilling! I purchased a Groupon for SoCal Adventure Company for my boyfriend's Christmas present. Typically, our schedules are jam-packed so I tried to book early, before the 3 month expiration date (although, I'm not sure it actually expires - check with Pete by emailing or calling). My work schedule makes it difficult to call during normal business hours to book, so Pete was nice to send the schedule via email to pick a date. After a few emails back and forth, we were set and our safety forms were sent. We met at the designated Starbucks and our guides - Pete, Cameron, and Kyle - were introduced. They went over a description of what we were going to be doing (canyoneering), safety, and distributed gear (helmets and harnesses). Our group of 6 participants and 3 guides then caravanned up Mt. Baldy to the fire safety road entrance near San Antonio falls. The first part of the hike is simple - A paved, slightly inclined road. Near the falls overlook, we took a turn to continue on a smaller trail. This part was more strenuous due to the incline and slippery scree. There was a wide range of athletic ability in our group, but they took many rest breaks to accommodate the different levels and admire the gorgeous views. Once we got to the top, they went over safety again and our group of beginners was patiently excited (and possibly a bit anxious and scared) to start. There were a total of 4.5 (one really small) repels, most of which were through the waterfalls. One of our group members was struggling with the heights, but our guides were extremely patient and understanding, giving her all the time she needed. It was so inspiring to see her overcome her fear and boldly step off. We had an absolute blast, if I could give them 10 stars, I would! I hope we can join in a different trip soon. Oh, they also offer pictures from their iPhones - $20 per person or $25 for 2. I can't wait to see the different angles they were able to get that we didn't. Today was my 2nd time canyonering. The guides, Dave and Cole, were excellent. Dave was very patient, technically sound, our safety was always placed first, and he was very very encouraging. First time canyoneering and my guides Pete and Scott were great! It looks scarier than it actually is and they did a good job on not letting me really freak out. It was so much fun!!! If you do this, make sure you bring cash to tip and for souvenirs just in case he doesn't get signal near the site. I unfortunately was unable to tip this time around because of the low signal and we tried to meet up down the hill so that I could but it was a fail lol. Miscommunication and I got a tad lost. But!!! I'll be back again, with cash to properly thank the amazing job these guides did. We had such a large group, at least 13 people and we all survived unscathed. Absolutely love these guys!! I have a thing against heights. Indoor climbing is okay as long as I get to keep a harness and a rope, but put me on a bouldering wall, and I won't get more than a few feet off the ground because I don't want to fall. That said, having gone both climbing and cayoneering with the company, I have never felt more safe nor had such a fantastic time as I have with these guys. Everyone is extremely friendly, and the guides all know what they're doing, are extremely confident in their knowledge, and triple check EVERYTHING; makes me feel 20x better. To top it all off, they will move only as fast as the group is able but will help you get out of your comfort zone if that's what you want. I would do it again in a heartbeat. My sister purchased me a spot in the group canyoneering excursion as a Christmas gift. We went to Rubio Canyon just north of Pasadena. It was an exhilarating experience! Our two guides, Pete and Kyle were knowledgeable, professional, and encouraging. There is inherent risk in rappelling down a 100-foot waterfall, especially if you've never repelled down anything before, but they did an excellent job minimizing the risk and making everyone feel comfortable and confident enough to do it without any problems. Plus, they were just fun guys to hang out with for the day. Found SoCal Adventures on groupon and booked a canyoneering trip at Mt. Baldy as a birthday present to myself. My husband and I had a great time. Our guides, Pete and Trevor were fun, knowledgeable, and patient. They emphasized safety throughout the entire trip. I don't like heights and even though I was scared, I always felt 100% safe with their experienced guidance. Trevor even loaned me his PERSONAL sweater to change into after my foot slipped and I swung sideways directly into the waterfall (rookie mistake). Now that's good customer service. Tip: If you go in the winter season, it's COLD, bring lots of layers to put on/take off/change into. If you are considering canyoneering, I would definitely recommend SoCal Adventures. read more

Went canyoneering with my son for his 14th birthday. We frequently rock climb, but were looking for a new adventure. We had an outstanding trip! Virtually everything went off without a hitch. The communication up front was great. The trip was great. We had a group with widely varying skill and fitness, and they expertly guided the entire group safely down the canyon. Most importantly, they ensured that EVERYBODY had a good time. The follow-up and pictures were great too. Finally, if you're concerned about safety, these guys have the skills to keep you as safe as humanly possible. They also have a solid routine in place to eliminate as much risk as they can (they provide rappel devices, harnesses, helmets, etc.). This ensures that everyone is on the same page. I want to start this review by saying I LOVE SOCAL ADVENTURE COMPANY! They are more MARVELOUS THAN MARMALADE!! I have come to know each member of the team and feel that they are genuine people who have a passion for what they do. It is rare to find that in companies now-a-days. Some friends and I went rock climbing and rappelling this past weekend at Stony Point in Topanga Canyon. This was my first time climbing real rocks (not in a climbing gym). This was also my first time rappelling, so I was a little nervous. The nerves went away with the help of Pete and Tom who were my guides for the day. They are very knowledgeable of the sport and explained things to me in a way I could understand. They brought everything we needed that day - climbing gear (so we didn't die from falling), safety gear (so we didn't die in general), water (so we didn't die from dehydration), and lunch (so we didn't die from starvation). No one died. Pete even brought hummus. Way to cover all your bases, Pete. I now know that I love hummus. I liked that Pete asked us what we wanted to do and tailored to the day to what we asked for. He also showed me how to rappel off a cliff. I felt 100% safe with his guidance. Tom is an expert belay-er. I felt 100% safe with him supporting me from the ground. Tom also helped me with my route going up the rock when I didn't know where to go. All in all, I highly recommend this company to anyone who seeks adventures. This was such a fantastic experience! We did the rock climbing trip on Mount Baldy - Saturday, March 26. Both Pete and Scott were awesome guides - super friendly, knowledgeable, and funny. They cheered us on as we climbed but were understanding if anyone wanted to come down. The climbs were a ton of fun - interesting and challenging, but not so hardcore that a beginner can't do them. I felt safe in the equipment and trusted Pete's and Scott's expertise. The setting was beautiful with wide open vistas of the mountains, both during the hike and at the climbing site. The weather was sunny and toasty-warm, but not so hot that you're roasting - a perfect temperature. Couldn't ask for a better trip! Here's how the day went: We all met at a Starbucks in Upland around 8am and Pete talked about what the day would entail. (Good chance to use the bathroom at Starbucks because from then on it's just trees!) Then we followed Pete in our separate cars to the start of the hike - less than a 30-minute drive. We got lucky with the parking, but it's limited, so carpooling's a consideration. The hike was about 3.5 miles each way (45-60 min), and very rocky, so bring sturdy shoes. (Not that you need hardcore hiking boots, but at least athletic sneakers.) I'd also suggest bug spray, as there were tiny flies that liked to fly around our faces. And definitely sun screen, since you're under the sun the whole time. The climbing site had 2 courses set up, and we all got to climb both. There's a third course that unfortunately we didn't have time to do. It was all pretty relaxed - when you weren't climbing you could just chill and watch, eat lunch, etc. Even though we didn't need warm layers yesterday, I would still bring a sweater at least, because mountains can be unpredictable. After everyone climbed (around 3:00ish), we hiked down. All in all, I highly recommend this company and would definitely climb with them again! read more

There are two things I look for in a guiding company. And I found while on trips with SoCal Adv Co!!! 1. Epic Adventures - I have now been on three different excursions. The first was cliff jumping the second canyoneering and the third was caving... all three were completely different but absolutely amazing. 2. Safety - Dave literally wrote the rock climbing industry safety book on belaying. I have never felt safer than with a guide from SoCal and I learned a ton from the experiences. We had an amazing time on this day trip! Pete and Brian were our guides and were absolutely amazing. Super knowledgeable, friendly and helpful throughout the entire trip. I have a bit of an issue with heights, so I was pretty nervous about the first rappel, but Pete was very patient with all of us, was tied on a separate rope and literally walked us through all of the instructions, making the entire process smooth and easy. By the 3rd rappel, we were all completely comfortable. The only thing I feel like I need to mention is READ THE GEAR LIST and bring everything they tell you. You will get wet, so a light rain jacket will help a ton, especially in the early spring. Shoes with good grip are a must, both for the canoyeering part of the trip, as well as the steep climb to get to the top of the waterfalls. Thanks Pete and Brian for an awesome day! Terrible experience with an unprofessional staff. We made a reservation over a month in advance to go on one of their excursions based on their great ratings for a trip we took to LA. They then de-committed on the reservation just days before we arrived. We were in town for 3 days, and they didn't let us into any of their groups. It seems like people have a great time once they start the trip, but their operations team ruined things for us :( read more

Went canyoneering in Rubio Canyon with Pete and David yesterday--and couldn't have had a better experience. I am deathly afraid of heights, so when we got to the first 100-foot waterfall, I thought I was going to burst out in tears. But Pete was amazingly helpful and got me through it. He assured me and everyone in our group that this activity was safer than driving on the freeway to get there and that it would only take him a second to come to my aid if I needed him. And he came to my aid before I even had to ask, helping me up to my feet after I had fallen on the falls. By the time I got to the last of 6 rappels, I was so much more confident, and on the smaller rappels, I was even laughing. Thanks to Pete and David, I overcame my fear! Pete was funny and engaging, and 100 percent attentive to our safety and needs. And David, who was stuck at the back with me on the hike up, was so patient with my slow pace and never made me feel like I was holding anyone up. If you're also looking to overcome your fears, I highly recommend this company. While arranging the tour can be a challenge due to the limited staff, if you hang with it, it will be well worth it once you get out there. read more
