During my stay at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel, I needed a quick and sustaining meal for a reasonable price. Obviously the closest option was within my own hotel and the menu met our other needs as well. I sat down with two friends and we ordered quickly. One friend and I shared the white bean dip appetizer and a pizza with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil. The other ordered a grilled salmon salad. Our server was extremely wonderful. It helped that she had a beautiful accent so it was just lovely to listen to her. In addition, she was friendly, prompt, and helpful. Everything I want from a server. Our white bean dip arrived first along with flatbread, house-cured olives, and pickled peppers. The portions were impressive and every part of the dish pulled us in further. The bean dip was similar to hummus but topped with a nutty olive oil and fresh cracked pepper. The olives were meaty. The peppers offered a flavor-packed kick. The flat bread (which we ordered more of) was the perfect vehicle. The pizza was more than I expected. The dough was soft, pillowy, chewy, and charred. The ingredients were fresh. Only complaint is that the basil wasn't really basil, but some other green. Some tips: don't order soda. My friend did and it cost him $4. Also, not sure if he was expecting his salad to cost $18 ($10 + $8 to add salmon, but I didn't read it that way on the menu). I'm surprised I didn't hear of their happy hour specials during my stay, but I did return to the bar on another night. We ordered cocktails, but my aviation was bright blue (normally clear or slightly purple) and too lemon forward. Overall an impressive hotel restaurant and bar. I was staying at the hotel and too tired to go out, so I checked out Socci. I'm not a big fan of pizza, but someone insisted I try it. I was actually pleasantly surprised. It was thin with fresh, flavorful ingredients, which is just the way I like it. I wouldnt go out of my way to eat here, but it is definitely worth trying if nearby. My friends and I met up for dinner on 11/1/13 based on Socci positive Yelp reviews. I must say I was not disappointed. Although, the restaurant is part of the Residence Inn; it didn't feel like a hotel restaurant. It was nicely decorated (including, the restroom which had a luxury feel to it). The furniture is modern (but didn't feel sterile). Our waitress and who I took to be the General Manager were very attentive. Overall, my friends and I enjoyed our meals. One of my friends was not a fan of her dish. However after sampling the other dishes she agreed it was the way the specific dish was executed (and not a reflection on the quality of the food). I love the fact that this restaurant is not crowded. My group of friends and I did not need a reservation on a Friday night. My only complaint is that the menu is slightly limited and the majority of the dishes are $15.00 and up. It was a small price to pay (pun intended) for the quality of food and service. We are staying next door and after traveling all day were tired and hungry. At check in we were told about restaurant next door and decided to try it. Although numerous reviews on Yelp said, expensive, slow service, etc., etc......well, our service was outstanding. Our waitress, Haime was excellent. I had the chopped salad... Artichoke, marinated tomato, olives, peppers, salumi, cheese and mixed greens with a delicious viginarette... Followed by tagliatelle pasta with meatballs, marinara and ricotta.... Ben had the three pigs pizza. Fresh dough with pork belly, Italian sausage, prosciutto and fresh mozzarella baked in a brick oven. Wow... All the food was great. And about those who. Said expensive all that plus two beers was only $57!.... If you go to a place like this and we expecting fast food restaurant prices then DON'T go..... Excellent hotel bar and restaurant. There is something fun going to a hotel to eat or drink, you never know what you are stepping into. Chances are if you sit at the bar you will strike up a conversation with a chatty traveler, that's ok unless they end up trying to sell you insurance. Overall a little pricey but worth it, and they offer half dishes which I usually prefer. I don't like carrying around leftovers. read more

When traveling and uncertain regarding food and drink, i rely on Yelp for advice and recommendations. This time I was stranded in a "hotel desert", when i reached out to Yelp for rescue. SOCCi was the recommended oasis. The bar/restaurant is in the Crystal City Renaissance hotel BTW. The atmosphere is very upbeat both in background music and decor. Service was attentive but over-charged for a wine different than ordered. (Hence four stars.) i ordered Spell Bound cab but received the Marchesi chianti. Eventually tried the cab which i found superior to the chianti but then, i like cabs with "gusto". Food selections included meatball appetizer which was superior and a half chopped salad with a nice, light house vinaigrette. Overall, a very pleasant experience for a Tuesday evening out of town. Only wish they would have served the cab vs. chianti. Would stop by again if in similar circumstance. read more

The Breakfast was a good value especially since you can get eggs and waffles to order plus coffee and a large orange juice for $20. Dinner was good not great. It hit the spot as we were tired and hungry and it was late and rainy and we didn't want to go out. Entrees were $20-30. I liked the option for half order of pasta just the right size for me. Stayed at the hotel and Socci served us our second meal of our stay a few others after that during the week we were there. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, had them all and were extremely pleased with the food and service each and every time. Staff is very friendly and knows how to take care of you. For those who might look at the menus and think "pricey" I would offer the following: at a place like Socci, paying a little more got us better food and better service, plus, DC area dining is more expensive than what you may be used to if you are not local. This is pretty much the case everywhere in the DC and surrounding areas. I had and thoroughly enjoyed (but not in this order, just what I remember): Classic eggs Benedict with real, freshly made Hollandaise sauce Chesapeake style eggs Benedict with crab meat instead of ham Three Pigs flatbread pizza Caesar salad Breakfast bar buffet (crazy about the smoked salmon I had on a bagel) There was another meal that I don't remember but my biggest take away is that as a traveler who likes to at least try the restaurant in house once to see if it's good, I have to say that this dining experience for my wife and I was as good as any restaurant we've eaten in. Staying at residence inn. Tried to stop in for a quick bite before retiring to my room. Stood at the podium, hostess never came over for me, but did when a group of four others came over. She seated them at a small bar table, and never came back for me. I figured it's a bar, so sat down at a bar table adjacent to them. Sat there for nearly 20 minutes, in plain view of the hostess. Neither she, nor anyone else ever came by to take a drink order, food order, or even acknowledge my presence. I'm a professional. Didn't look like a bum or someone who wouldn't pay. Wore jeans and a plain long sleeve shirt with a plain fleece over it. Not dressed inappropriately or anything. Have no idea why I was flat out ignored. Ended up getting up and leaving. read more

Love this place. Ambience is great and the mood is calm and soothing. The staff are all amazing, especially the chef. He comes out to greet the patrons and is very personable, and customer service oriented. He actually remembered me on my second visit there (impressive) The food: I had the Roasted McDowell Mushroom Pizza both times, and for good reason, it is delicious. Very flavorful. Love the Chef...he is the reason for the two extra stars....a group of five had dinner here on 3/14. Obviously a new restaurant is going to have it's hiccups when our waitress gave a pretty lame answers on the menu questions. We overlooked it. When she came back to retake our drink other three times...fine ok....when she messed up the food others and forgot to put in two out of the four dinner entrees. We politely accepted the apology. When she disappeared promptly after serving and we could not get a side of Parmesan for the pasta is when we started to get irritated. Three out of the five of us enjoyed the food (which includes me). I had the NY steak which was beautifully cooked. Another had the seafood pasta which she had no complaints. Other orders included pizza and the mushroom pasta. My friend complained that the pasta was dry and not flavorful. We also shared the buratta, mussels and the chopped salad - all good. So back to the waitress it took her forever and a day to check on our table even though we tried to wave her attention. We had to get the busboy to find her. And even after she took our dessert orders it took another long wait of 35 mins when we realized she again had not placed our orders...we were seated right next to the kitchen and could see the Chef and staff not working on any orders. With annoyed faces we asked the same busboy to find our waitress so we could cancel our orders. The Chef who was standing there realized there was a commotion and came to our table to remedy the situation. We complained about the server and he quickly apologized and within 7 mins had our desserts and extras delivered to our table. The donuts where good. We were disappointed by the gelato which was gritty not creamy. Good enough to visit the bar but I probably wouldn't eat here again unless I was saying at the hotel. read more

Socci? More like ... sucky. I found myself at this restaurant, which is typically beyond the realm of my stomping grounds, when the Captain decided to stay in a hotel by DCA before an early morning flight. A quick yelp search indicated that Socci was nearby. And by nearby, I mean, in the building. Even with the less than stellar reviews we tried it anyway. To start, our waiter, while friendly, was the slowest, most non-present service staff ever ... in life. He took our drink order. We wait. He brings one drink. We wait some more. He brings another drink and bounces before we can order any appetizers. Several minutes later he emerges again but stealths by our table like a ninja that my fat pregnant ass was nearly chasing him to put an appetizer order in. We ordered two appetizers: arancini and duck meatballs. He suggested the house meatballs over duck. Ok fine. Best thing he did that night since it was the only good thing we had. The arancini was mushy and bland. Several minutes later we waited for both refills and a chance to order our dinner. Once again, I was frantically waving my arms in an attempt to flag him down. I looked like Coco the monkey. I asked for a pasta recommendation and he immediately suggested the seafood pasta. The description didn't seem appealing to me at all but hey, I'll trust the guy who works there. For my husband he suggested the New York strip. Oh, and I had to ask him to get us refills. Dude, if you see empty glasses (particularly wine) ask if the customer wants more. My husband never says no to another glass so take advantage! This seafood pasta was so freaking boring and bland that I couldn't eat it. The Captain's steak and vegetables were "I guess ok" as he put it. Based on the fact that these were recommended items, I can't imagine what the rest of the menu tastes like. I pushed my plate away because just looking at it made me sad. Our meal easily turned into a 2 hour dinner because we couldn't locate our waiter. Bear in mind, this was a Monday night. It took forever to ask for our check and even longer for him to bring it to us! I will not return. The Socci food and service were flat out sucky. Go elsewhere for dinner. read more

They hosted my family for lunch after we attended my grandfathers service at Arlington. It was a friendly open area to catch up on memories and chat. The menu had a posh variety and the portion of my antipasto was enough for a meal (which is my preference). The dessert menu was perfect as any respectable Italian restaurant hopes to achieve. My cousin and I shared the creme brûlée cheesecake with candied orange......amazing. This is a pretty cool spot for Happy Hour. $2 draft beer, $5 house wine, and $4.50 cocktails. Appetizers are around $4. What we ordered: Hummingbird tomato, basil, and mozzarella pizza - This was okay. The crust is pretty good, but the sauce was bland. Definitely needed something to spice it up. Also, they listed basil as an ingredient but they used some other green stuff instead. I think it really needed the basil. HH Arancini - quite good! I can't wait to try the regular menu arancinis with meat. Spinach Artichoke Dip - I liked it! It was pretty standard, but I would order it again. HH Wings - I liked the crispness of the wings even though they were covered in sauce. You get 6 wings. It was perfect for 2 ladies sharing HH goodies. I am writing this review after having dined here several times over several years while staying in the Renaissance Hotel. That is to say, I've dined here for convenience and necessity due to time. Although the food is probably in the range of a 3.5 or 4.0, the service is horrible. It is not uncommon to be seated and then ignored for extended periods of time, even when it is not busy. It's not uncommon to order a drink and to wait 10+ minutes for it to arrive. The bar is usually tended by one person who's overwhelmed with orders. You'll often review the menu, decide what you want, and then sit there forever. One time, our dinner actually came BEFORE the drinks arrived. This morning I was seated for breakfast, not given a menu, and then left there for like 10-15 minutes without even being asked if I wanted coffee. When I finally flagged someone down for coffee, I then had to wait forever again for it to arrive. Breakfast came, "may I have some hot sauce please?" "Sure." Then I wait again forever. I was basically done with breakfast by time it arrived. I think the overall consistent characteristic of the wait staff is that they just don't get it. read more

I stayed at the Renaissance for a work conference and we came to SOCCi for lunch on one of the days. They were completely unprepared for our group of 15 people. It took them forever to seat us and then they sat 7 people and made the other 8 stand around and wait with no explanation. Finally got a table and some people were not given water. None of us got a menu for 10 minutes. Then they disappeared for another 10 minutes. No one apologized for the wait or the missing waters. Our food came out relatively quickly, but some people still didn't have anything to drink. They still didn't apologize. My quinoa and mushroom burger was very tasty, but it was $12 and they added in gratuity for abysmal service. I paid in cash and the server didn't want to bring me my change from a $20 (even though I had already given a 20% tip). We were all later returning to the conference and I would not go back! read more

We were in need of a private dining space badly and also wanted to make sure that the food and beverages for our party would be perfect. This team and cooking staff went well beyond our expectations. Not only were they extremely accommodating (as we needed to re-arrange some items within the private dining space), they also went above and beyond in every way possible including the turn around service changing out fresh glasses and water etc. If you're looking for a central location with an upscale ambiance then you really should look no further. The rest of the dining space on the regular floor was spectacular as well. The bar is very welcoming with a LARGE selection of just about anything and everything you could want. So I am attending the fancy food show here in dc and been tasting some of the best food products like Parma prosciutto, Belgian chocolates, this wonderful rose hip infused gruyere just to name a few all day, and I got back to my hotel, thirsty after walking a mile in dc heat plop down at the bar of my hotel (didn't, know it's only 3 months old renaissance with that trendy urban beat and look) rooms and staff are awesome by the way. So I am enjoying this nice Old Dominion Dortmund style lager and I see this on the menu for 12 bucks how could I say no to local Lehman dairy eggs, smoked bacon, Yukon potato, leeks, mozzarella hearth fired pizza. I could not 18 minutes later a refill on my beer I am presented with a wooden plank, 12 inched by 6 inches covered with thin rustic crusted pizza thT has thin layer of mozzarella on top covering all the other ingredients. I sip my beer, and take the first bite (not really sure of what to expect) So I got this marriage of flavors that blended like they were celebrating their 50 th anniversary. It all seemed right, the smoky bacon and eggs gave it masculinity while the leeks and potatoes plus cheese kind of finished it off perfectly. The crust was clean, rustic and just a bit yeasty perfect for a pizza crust. I highly recommend it and the bartender is cool too boot. read more
