The only redeeming factor of this place is the quality of the amenities. The cues, tables and balls are all top tier and well maintained - only pool hall I've ever seen with carbon fiber house cues. But that's only if you can manage to get in. Even during the week expect to wait 1hr+. Not in the APA league? You're on the back burner. Didn't pay thousands to rent out half the table? Good luck. I finally managed to get a table after trying three different times to play here and the said I have to leave after an hour for an event. The servers are great, drinks are ridiculously expensive (cheapest beer is $10) and the food is mid at best. Go to Amsterdam or a dive bar, this isn't worth your time if you actually play pool. read more

Came here for a work event, so we had the back section to ourselves. I'm glad I didn't pay, so I could just play without worrying about the subpar food and drinks. Our buffet spread included pulled pork sliders, chicken tacos, cheese pizza, and spanakopita. Only the pizza was halfway decent, even by sports bar standards. I always enjoy going down stairs as soon as I walk into a new establishment in New York City because it's always surprise when you get to the end of the stairs. When you make it down the stairs, you are greeted by Society's staff and they asked you if you want to sit at the bar, go to the lounge, rent a pool table, or play darts. I haven't been into many billiards spots but this place had a lot of tables. The most I have ever seen and I think I counted 18 or 20 tables. Nonetheless, the place is worth a visit if you like pool and darts. As with everything in New York City, it is a little expensive and they charge per the hour for darts and pool. Finally, it is dark and I could barely see when walking down the hall to go to the restroom. read more

Came in to Society to play some pool with a few buddies. We were told it would about a 30min wait, which wasn't an issue for us. We had a few drinks while we waited. When it was our time we walked to the back and got to our table. The table and pool cues were good and we were happy to play 4 games or so. Just a strange place. The bathroom setup is legit pitch black with blaring music. Then when I went to close out with the server who was assisting our group, first I was told I'd have to go to the front, then after I go to the front the server looks for me at the original location, then I'm legit told again my card and ID are at the front ... even though they're not? The entrance is pretty dark and rather plain, but downstairs, it's like a hidden gem. They have about 20 pool tables and all the equipment. It's a great place to hang out and have fun. There is a community of people who come to practice for the weekly League as well, so you'll see some serious and focused pool players here. Place was super crowded and the tables are close together so I bumped my stick into the person to my right several times when it was my turn. Always had to keep checking behind me to make sure I wouldn't hit anyone. Not a fun experience. Moreover, I had brought a drink from the outside because it was a hot day and I don't enjoy alcohol. They threw it out without asking me even though I was at the pool table adjacent to the table I had left it on. No real service there - will have to find someone to get your food. Also very pricey - pay per person per hour instead of per table per hour. Would not recommend. Go elsewhere. read more

Came here for a holiday work outing on a Tuesday evening. We had our own section that consisted of a pool and ping pong table for about 2 hours. Pros: the music was really good. From the moment we walked in, there was nonstop lively music that made you want to at least sway side to side. Surprisingly the food was good as well. I was expecting dive bar quality but it was a few notches above that. The sliders and guacamole were tasty and the warm chocolate chip cookies topped it off. Cons: I honestly can't think of any. Everything was paid for through my job so I can't talk on my experience when it came down to pay. Overall, I'm not a pool person so idk if I'd come back however it was fun while I was there and it was pretty packed so they're obviously doing something right there. We tried to explain that we were industry and only wanted one game of pool but they rushed to accommodate even though they were open until 4am and we were there at 2am. Been playing on league here for years. Aside from the immaculate pool tables, the prices are insanely high and the management is sexist to the point of training waitresses to primarily take orders from male customers. Tonight, the owner of Society Billiards told me to "go fuck myself" during a league match against his team. It's clearly just a flex bar and meant to be a free hangout for him and is not meant for the customer in any way. read more

This place has the feel of an old pool hall. The place is well kept and the equipment isn't shoddy. There is "table service" which is nice because you don't have to keep disrupting your game to order at the bar. The entrance is easy to miss and leads downstairs. Society is actually the hall that got me into billiards and you can't find a better place for pool in the city. Because of the staff (shoutout to Taj and Vanessa), the pool pricing, equipment, the great cocktails and drinks they have, and the overall ambiance it's become a staple of my weekend and a great destination for when I have people visiting from out of town. People here are really friendly and the bar should be grateful that they've been able to consistently hire A+ people. The pool tables are big; they have enough space between them that even if there are people in the next tables, you still enjoy your own private games. Now let me explain the four star rating. (1) The quesadilla was too basic; it tasted like frozen food. We had two quesadillas, and I felt like it was one, which they split in two, to charge us for two. (2) The music did not vary... like this is New York (melting pot), how about putting DIFFERENT TYPES OF MUSIC? (3) The bartender/waitress was slow. Pool hall downstairs near Madison Park. Tables and house cues are reasonably well-maintained, and they warned us this would be a league night, to come early and get a table. Not too expensive for rental (by people and time). Not a bad place to come - almost not enough space between tables, but okay spacing. Food was a downer... the pizza was terrible, and they were completely out of paninis and the curry puffs... which means 75% of the menu was missing. But, you're hopefully here to play and drink some beer (some nice craft selections). Having been here several times and had a great time each visit with friends, it's safe to say Society is an awesome fun place to shoot pool, play darts or just watch a game. It has a decent food menu (haven't tried the food), a super friendly staff, a full bar and lots of flat screens. The few weeknights that I've been there, Society was hosting some serious billiard league games, which were entertaining to watch, as wells as plenty of recreational players (like me) who were just playing for fun. However, it's a definite possibility here at Society Billiards & Bar. I got a hot deal through LivingSocial, NBD. Definitely a classy establishment, James Bond 007 status. The creepers have not yet discovered this place and for that, $10/hour is more than worth the price. PS - Their cocktails are amazbeans. $12 including tip per cocktail, but the Strawberry Lemonade, Socie-tee, and the Moscow Mule were some of the best cocktails I've tasted in NYC. PPS - It didn't hurt that my game got even more amazing with the cocktails PPSS - Loved how Society tried to help us get the most out of our LivingSocial deal. Great customer service. 1.5 hours of pool for 2 plus a free cocktail. Not a bad night. Plus, I was able to take home a super hot studmuffin aka David E. Tasty. This is a great place to play some pool but MAN is it expensive!! 2-hours with a buddy of mine and we dropped almost $175 versus $55 at Fat Cat the other day. 2-hours of pool for 2-people ran $70...$9 for a standard pour draft beer (Fat Tire Ale. Nothing fancy). Food menu is mediocre but its there and came timely enough. Biggest issue with the place is the prices. Service was solid as they had plenty of staff (too many people splitting the tips if I was working there). Lost a star for the prices but I won't be back unless someone else is footing the bill. We stopped in at Society early Saturday evening while waiting for a table to open up at Eataly. The place, at least at first, was pretty empty save a few pool aficionados. The space was large and felt roomy. I'm not much into billiards, and I imagine I'm still pretty bad at it, so a few in the group played while the rest of us hung out in the bar area. I had a delicious margarita made with apple cider and a cinnamon rim. Other cocktails looked great as well, and they have a decent beer list. We were so hungry that we decided to get a snack while there. This turned out to be a top life decision. I split the southwestern turkey panini with a friend, which came with fries and chipotle (how is that still not considered a word, spell check?) mayo sauce, and it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had the privilege of eating. Others also ordered another panini - don't remember what it was called, and there's no online menu to look it up, but I know it had mozzarella - which was delicious as well.
