Flavors are Jasmine tea, Vietnamese coffee, pho, sriracha, durian, guava, passion fruit, lychee and cognac. I discovered different flavors I've never had in chocolate. If you're adventurous with flavors, treat yourself or share with others. I love their durian truffle. The smell can be a turn off when you bite into it, but the smooth, creamy flavor is tasty. I wish it was more affordable, so I can indulge in it more often. They sell them in boxes of 4 for $20. I also like the jasmine tea, matcha chocolate. The Taste: I had the soda chanh, which would normally be a drink with 3 simple ingredients: lime, sugar, and carbonated water. I had no idea what to expect because chocolate is not the first thing I think of what someone says soda chanh, but I have to say this is one of the best white chocolates I've ever had. Somehow the drink flavor works as a chocolate! I also had the toasted coconut and black sesame milk chocolate, which was also unexpected but also delicious. It tastes exactly as it sounds, and yet all the disparate components complement each other perfectly. I was on the hunt for locally made treats in SF (other than my "usuals") to gift to friends abroad--and let's be honest, I wanted something for myself too --when I thought of Socola. I had scoped out their website beforehand and was excited to try some of their AAPI-themed chocolate bar flavours. Come here for your chocolate. I tried the Vietnamese coffee bar and the durian king bar. I loved both, but the durian king bar was my favorite. I think the Vietnamese coffee bar has a good strong Viet coffee taste. I understand the whole coffee beans bring another type of texture to it, but it just taste burnt to me and was a distraction from the chocolate bar. The durian king was amazing. I normally hate milk chocolate, but I understand that the milk chocolate brings out the creaminess of the durian flavor. The durian flavor is also so prominent and good. I am a fan of Recchiutti so when a friend mentioned Socola, I definitely wanted to try especially the durian truffles. Only limited availability, they tend to sell out of these but they have a waitlist that will notify you when it becomes available again. The limited hours makes it hard to pickup orders if you don't want to pay for shipping unless you are working in the city and parking a challenge if they don't answer for your curbside pickup. Overall, the durian truffles were a unique offering that is rarely seen elsewhere so would return for that, but their other chocolates don't pack the flavor punch that I normally get with Recchiutti. read more

I decided to stop by Socola this past Wednesday and treat myself to some chocolatey nutty goodness. Love their toasted nuts and dark chocolate bar, made with all of my favorite nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans), you can taste the difference in quality of ingredients, it's quite addictive. Of course, I had to get a durian king bar for my bf. We tried both of these flavors from Socola's dessert booth at the SF Chocolate Salon a couple months ago, and fell in love! I'm glad to see that their actual chocolate shop on Folsom Street offers the same friendly service we received before, along with a welcoming atmosphere in a small and simple space. The lady at the front counter even provided samples of the chocolates before I made my purchase, she was very sweet. AMAZING SERVICE from this super cute hole in the wall spot!! the most friendly staff greeted us and were so kind in letting us sample a couple of super unique Vietnamese inspired flavored chocolate. we picked up their flying Harriets, which are some pecan caramel truffles, and freeze dried mixed berries dark chocolate bar. super great quality chocolate. all the chocolates were so beautiful, too. so eye catching with amazing attention to detail. as someone who is very sensitive to sweets, I was really impressed with this place because I usually start feeling sick after a bite or two of chocolate but was able to eat 4-5 whole pieces and could keep going!! I was in SF for a quick work trip but carved out time to find a chocolatier so I could bring some stuff back home. My local co-workers weren't much help (they mentioned See's), so I used Yelp to find a place relatively close to the office, and I found Socola. Monday in the early afternoon was going to be quiet, so I had plenty of time to look and ask questions. I mentioned I was from out of town, and I was looking for their signature box. They mentioned the Little Saigon box, which was interesting for me but probably a little out there as a souvenir box; pho truffle intrigued me, but maybe not for my target audience. They did have a build your own assorted box as another option, which I took as hedge. generally allowed me to pick my own. They had a 4, 12, and 24 truffle option-that's a big jump; I was hoping for a 6 or maybe a 9 pack, but that's what they had. I decided to just say 'why not' and went with the big 24 truffle option. The price was fairly hefty, but not far out of the realm, but I thought the truffles themselves were fairly small. I also walked about with their potato chip and pretzel and their strawberry and cream bar, which was definitely harder to swallow price wise. At 9 bucks a bar, the two bars, and the boxes, my walkout total came out to almost 200 bucks, and they had a tip option, which I found unusual. Ever since I was heading to Sue's Kitchen last other Monday during less than half an hour of my lunchtime, I was waiting for long to have a matcha latte from Sue herself. But what I hadn't realized was that the new ramen bar with a new name replaced most of what's matcha: latte and desserts. Bummer! Just when I walked to the next street to look for a café that sells matcha, voila! Couldn't walk back to my workplace just yet. Socola Chocolatier and Barista was one place where I finally got my matcha fix. The owner, Wendy, and her staff of baristas, or matcha baes, had treated me well upon my visit. After I had my matcha latte in my used mug, her staff member was friendly enough to have me sample a small piece of 100% unsweetened dark chocolate bar after asking anyone or Wendy if they have one. As for my matcha with oat milk, unsweetened as well. Dig it! Not much time nor thought about the atmosphere; let alone good customer service. But they truly are delicious, and are meant for savoring, not inhaling (I'm talkin' to you, devil that sits on my shoulder!) They're expensive, so be prepared. This was a big surprise for me to explore my potential lunch spots near my new workplace. SoCola's branch is a tiny chocolatier shop with a local Ilema charm with wings! They feature local vendors like Guittard Chocolate Co, which is fabulous! When I saw the tiny shop, I was immediately drawn to their menu signage outside that featured their Artisanal Chocolate Cognac Truffles. I was very fortunate to score the last bag of 16 truffles! Their truffles are square-shaped and not the traditional French round-shaped treats. The smell of the cognac is divine with a delicate chocolate powdery coating. Allow the truffle to dissolve slowly in your mouth. You will feel a sweet warmth fill your mouth along with a slight bitter taste of cognac, which had a well-balanced sweetness of cocoa! It blended nicely and dissolved with a clean aftertaste of the chocolate. SoCola also specializes in hot beverage and boy!...I enjoyed their homemade marshallows! Ask for them to add two. It adds a perfect creamy texture in your hot cocoa! Fortunately I had my lunch first! Do not get discouraged to find yourself walking through a messy construction with at this time. If I'm ever in the Rincon Hill area of Soma I like to stop by this cute little neighborhooody fine chocolate/coffee-stop. The chocolates are small for $2.75 but they pack a lot of flavor and have pretty designs on top. There are some unique flavors, my favs are the tea ones like the Duchess of Earl or Jasmine tea. In addition to chocolate pieces, they have hot drinks, chocolate bars (you have to try the potato chip and pretzel!), and gift box sets. They can do customized logos on the chocolate pieces in bulk, so it's a great idea for corporate events. I've walked by Socola near SoMa downtown so often because it's near my office, and have friends and coworkers who've bought chocolate here, but I myself never went in. This review is for the Little Saigon box. The Little Saigon Box offers 12 or 24 truffles (9 different Vietnamese flavors) presented as a whole four-course meal. I know, sounds wild, right? I love how crazy it sounds. The flavors included were: - jasmine tea, which tasted tea-flavored! It was flowery and subtle, and smelled delicious--reminding me of tea! - guava and lychee, tasting just as you'd expect. - sriracha flying rooster- chocolate, but featuring powerful notes of garlic and chili. I love spiced chocolate and this one did not disappoint. - phở. Don't ask me how, but this tasted like noodle soup featuring star anise, black cardamom, fennel, coriander, cinnamon, cloves and black peppercorn. It was unique, unlike anything I've ever tried (besides actual pho) but still tasted like a truffle. Sorcery! - durian. The worst one in my opinion. It smelled meh and tasted yucky to me (unless you like durian.) It was supposed to have some custard texture and 31% white chocolate, but I didn't taste it. - Viet coffee--I should've saved this one for the morning to wake up to--a nice roasted French chicory coffee taste with a tad of condensed milk - cognac - velvety dark chocolate ganache infused with cognac and topped off with some dusty 99% dark cocoa powder. Great dessert/finish to the 4-course meal. Not only did I love the uniqueness of the truffle box and how each individual one made a different note sing, and they're made with local ingredients like Straus Creamery cream, but I also must call out the attention-to-detail in the packaging, the letter, and the information on the box. I used to work so close to this place but never tried it. Now working from home, I regret that decision! The truffles are each unique with an artisanal twist. The owners are Vietnamese, and pay homage beautifully to their homeland through creative flavors such as vietnamese coffee, durian, and even pho! But my ultimate favorite is the jasmine. Although pricey, the party in your mouth after taking a bite and letting all the flavors melt slowly makes it all worth it. See's Candies or Whitman's Samplers had always confused me on which one I was eating since the colors and shapes were similar. I needed to pick up some chocolates for two of our clients for the holidays. Enter in Socola Chocolatier and Barista. I picked up two boxes of the four count at $24 and while they were smaller than I had expected to purchase, a couple years ago we went with huge boxes of chocolate from some online company, and the quality and taste just weren't amazing. These were smaller, bite sized, and could be enjoyed by one to two people, which was what we were looking for. The boxes were also beautiful and they gave me two small bags for them as well! Winter is coming... which means hot chocolate season is up and about !!! I searched hot chocolate nearby after work and this was the first place that popped up. A chocolate shop that sells hot chocolate.. who would've thought. The shop is small with only two tables so def not a place to work but to enjoy with friends. It has a very cozy ambiance as if you're at home sipping on your favorite mug on a cold foggy Sunday morning vibes. The chocolates at Socola are made with love. I have tried several varieties of their hand crafted chocolates and highly recommend! They have some very interesting flavors such as durian(!) and sriacha which I am personally a big fan of. Don't worry the durian truffles from Socola are not overpowering like the fresh fruit, pungent enough to clear an entire room. These contain a much smaller amount mixed in with chocolate which is a great combination. Their store is filled with alpaca themed furnishings. These range from stuffed animals to art work on the walls. Their mascot is Harriet the flying alpaca (which by now should all make sense). They had an event today with two alpacas that you can pet in real life. Also some of their chocolates are subtle hint that left handed people exist. I'm one of them. 5 stars. read more
