We went through one of the scariest experiences of our lives when our French bulldog was diagnosed with Valley Fever that affected his heart and required major surgery. After a very difficult and stressful experience elsewhere, we were referred to Dr. Soderstrom--and it completely changed everything. Dr. Soderstrom is calm, compassionate, and incredibly experienced. What meant the most to us was that HE personally communicated with us throughout the procedure, not a staff member. That level of care and accountability is rare. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. From the instant we walked in, we were greeted by a somber (and frankly mean) tech at the front desk. She didn't speak to us but instead snapped at us. The manner in which they interacted with myself and my dog clearly sent the message that they don't care. I was ready to walk out but remained, meeting with Dr. Soderstrom. His bedside manner was slightly better, but again, his body language, in addition to the casual and arrogant disposition, sent the same message. Our Frenchie Bailey had major ear surgery removing both her ear canals due to severe ear infections. It was extremely emotional and scary. Dr Sodetstrom and his staff are AMAZING. They took such great care and got our baby girl back to healthy. I can't say enough of how thankful we are to them all. This is fresh but yesterday my dog Smash went in for surgery. It was successful his tumors were removed unfortunately he did pass away. No fault to the staff or dr who did everything they could. The dr and staff have been so amazing and though we are mourning I can't thank them enough. I don't wish this on anybody but I do appreciate all that they're doing for us. I would still recommend if your pet needs surgery to come see Dr. Soderstrom. The doctor clearly explained my dog's injury (Achilles tendon), how he was going to repair it, and what her post surgery care would require. He outlined the total cost for everything during the initial visit so I knew exactly what to expect financially. Here we are six weeks later and she just had the final bandage removed and she is able to walk on all fours, albeit gently. We had a great experience with Dr. Soderstrom and his very attentive team. Absolutely do not recommend. One: You can never get a real person on the phone 100% of the time you call. What you get is Peggy's Voicemail, you leave a message to only never hear back and to have to leave another message. Our dog Charlie has an injury to his leg, so we went for a surgery consult with Soderstrom. Soderstrom said it had nothing to do with his leg and that Charlie had a Brain Tumor, so we bought into it and paid $1600 for a CT of the brain. After the CT was done we never heard back from him on the results, until I called several times 3 weeks later. Finally hear back from Soderstrom who says the CT was negative and then says Charlie has fluid around his brain, so lets put him on Prednisone for 3 days and I'll call you back in 3 days to see how he's doing. AGAIN, NO CALL BACK this was 2 weeks ago and after I left several messages on Peggy's voice mail and still no call back. In fact when I tried to tell Soderstrom that this is a leg injury he appeared over the phone to get frustrated with me, telling me he knows what he's talking about. My thoughts. . Well, I to do and nothing Dr. Soderstrom has done has turned up any answers. The issue is I accidentally stepped on my dogs hind leg in the middle of the night, it was dark and I didn't see him. I felt how hard I stepped on him, not once but twice. When he moved I moved and I stepped on him again. I tore the meniscus in my knee from this accident when I lost my balance trying to get away from him and not hurt him again. Just be very careful proceeding with this vet. He doesn't return calls and he may lead you down a path of financial hardship with no results. We are starting over with a new surgeon today and I hope Charlie can get the attention and care he needs. *** Adding after reading several other negative reviews, which includes the lost of other's loved ones at the hands of this vet, I am so thankful he never returned calls and never touched my dog for surgery. Dr Soderstrom removes negative reviews, so I am again writing this review, to warn dog owners not to make the same mistake I made, before agreeing to fork over your beloved family member to this clinic for surgery. My experience detailed below, is that Soderstrom and his staff care about quantity rather than quality, and making the most amount of money as possible, no matter the risk to beloved pets. My general Ahwautukee Foothills Animal Clinic veterinarian suggested and referred me to Dr. Soderstrom for exploratory and biopsy surgery for an enlarged liver that could possibly be cancerous. My experience was the heartache, helplessness, pain and death, my beloved Foxhound named Angel, experienced after the unnecessary, risky, painful, and expensive surgery, that she went through; and feeling helplessly devastated after she died an unexpected "painful" death, 36 hours after her surgery and 18 hours after bringing her home. Eight days prior to my dogs surgery, I had brought my happy, energetic Foxhound with a bloated belly, to my longtime vet at the Foothills Animal Hospital in Ahwautukee, where they x-rayed her and saw that she had an enlarged liver. My vet referred me to Dr. Soderstrom as they have partnered with him for surgery referrals. During my appt with Soderstrom, he told me the only way to determine if it was cancer, was to do exploratory surgery costing $3750.00. He said a needle biopsy would not be conclusive. I trusted him and my trust in him was a BIG mistake. I agreed to the surgery the next day as he said he had a cancelation, which was a another huge mistake. He assured me that if the biopsy was cancerous, then I would go to an Oncologist vet in Gilbert for further treatment. After dropping my dog off the morning of the surgery, I called after 3 PM and was told by his assistant my dogs surgery was pushed back into the LATE afternoon because the dogs surgery before hers, had become "complicated" and lasted longer than expected. By 5:30pm I called and was told Soderstrom was going to started her surgery momentarily and I expressed my concern about his fatigue and skill level after doing surgeries all day and its now going into the evening hours. His vet assistant told me "Oh no, he's just getting warmed up". I should have stopped the surgery right there, and I failed to protect by dog by not doing so. In my opinion, it is reckless for a vet to be operating nonstop all day and then late into the early evening on non emergency cases as the quality of the surgery maybe compromised due to fatigue. You need to know the following things prior to your pets surgery with Dr Soderstrom, so you can protect you beloved pet from dying unnecessarily. 1. Don't rush your decision to agree to the surgery and ask important questions such as "How risky is this surgery; can my dog die as a result?" Go with your gut feeling. If you are unsure, get a second option from ANOTHER trusted veterinary surgeon. 2. As with any vet you choose, check with the Arizona Veterinary Board for past complaints filed by pet owners before surgery. Also read online reviews. Takeaways.....Make an informed, well thought-out decision, and get a SECOND OPINION from another TRUSTED specialty vet. Every case is different, but in my dogs case, if I would have had to do it all over again, I would have not opted for surgery but instead, made an appt with an Oncology vet.
