I would like to suggest that if you charge $16.00 each for Frozen Pina Coladas served indoors ...do NOT serve in cheap plastic cups. Additionally, do NOT cheat the customers out of the rum. We go out for a nice evening and do not wish to be swindled. The bare minimum "special" menu left a lot to be desired. Couldn't touch the eggplant rollatini, because it was tough and smothered with mozzarella that looked like glue. The salad that was ordered looked like a kid's portion. The warm bread was the only thing that tasted ok. However, we were given ice cold butter that did not soften. I chose Sofia's because I had enjoyed a dinner there a few years ago. After this recent experience; I will no longer patronize this establishment. We went elsewhere afterward, due to not being satisfied. The halibut was okay, but the mussels tasted kind of old. My husband and friend liked their chicken and the desserts were good, but expensive at $10 each. We had tiramisu, Italian cheesecake and Tartufo with pistachio ice cream. All in all it was an okay place, but a little expensive at $200 for 3 people with no appetizers and 3 wines and 1 beer. Also the portions could have been larger for the price. I mean it's bay ridge, not Manhattan. The service was fine and the ambiance was okay, decorated for the holidays. The first thing I noticed about this restaurant was how empty it was. The second thing was when I sat down and saw my unclean plate that was sticky to the touch. Ordered calamari and caesar salad for appetizers. Calamari was a little soggy but nonetheless tasted just fine. The caesar salad was abysmal. It was a sad and sorry looking plate of greens. I ordered the shrimp penne vodka and my friend had the chicken Alfredo. My pasta and sauce tasted good but the shrimp and scallops in my dish were overcooked and rubbery. There was only one waiter working until it started getting a little busier where I saw a second one come out to refill water glasses. The waiter was attentive and nice enough. My overall experience with this location is disappointing. I expected better from a "legitimate" Italian restaurant. Perhaps my standards are a little high, but I went to Olive Garden the following day and had a much better time with both the service and food in comparison to this place. Not to mention it's cheaper. I don't really recommend coming here but if you must, just know that it's a mediocre option. There are probably better Italian restaurants in the Bay Ridge Area, I'd skip this one if I were you and travel a little more out of your way to get better quality. read more

Randomly found this spot as I was walking down 3rd Avenue looking for a dinner spot. We chose this restaurant because seat spacing were wide and felt more safe. We ordered a calamari, seafood linguine and chicken marsala. Overall food were okay. The pasta was probably the better choice. I've never had Italian food that could be called "disgusting". That is -- until I went to Sofia. They treated us to an over-cucumbered "sauce on bread" which was whatever. Then they brought out more bread only this time it was cold (instead of warm and fresh) and the butter hadn't even been left to soften. I ordered the veal parmigiana and my girlfriend ordered the vodka penne. Her's came with shrimp and scallops. She said the shrimp was fine; however, the scallops were disgusting. My veal was rubbery and soggy. The penne it came with (they offered me potatoes at first) was nothing to write home about. I was thinking, this is gross but I'm not going to make a scene. I probably should have. It was so bad to the point that I'm afraid of getting food poisoning. There was some part of the veal that was so crunchy I could not chew it and I had to spit it out. On top of this the wait staff seemed overworked and unable to attend properly to our table. There is no way an Italian is in that kitchen. Absolutely horrendous. We would have been better off going to Leo's which is more of a fast food pizza join but infinitely superior. I am in SHOCK at how bad this meal was. If you're a sangria lover then I highly recommend theirs and if you plan on having more than a cup, the pitcher is definitely a good deal. The cup is $10 and the pitcher is $30 and we got about 5 cups from it (granted our cups had ice). I also highly recommend the penne vodka which comes with shrimps and scallops. This restaurant is a gem in BayRidge. We stumbled across this restaurant about 4 years ago when we moved to Brooklyn. The food is amazing but the Service is Phenomenal! Our favorite waiter is Franco! We adore him. This man makes you feel like family when you come into the restaurant. He always gives excellent recommendations to my husband for dinner. My husband tries something new every time we go and is also happy with his selection. Came here on a cold week night. Place was emptied, with the waiters wandering around. We sat down ordered our meal, which came out quick. The only good dish that stood out from this meal was the Seafood sampler appetizer. The Tricolor salad had no taste at all, just not enough flavor. The main dish which the restaurant is famous for was the Veal with eggplant parmesan and roasted potatoes. Veal was too tough, the roasted potatoes tasted like seasoned chemicals. Solid Italian restaurant in the middle of a bustling area of Bay Ridge! There's a ton of action at this intersection, especially during the weekend. Two caffe's, a bar and at least two other restaurants in the immediate area make it a hot spot, and Sofia's fits in perfectly. There's an outdoor seating area during nice weather which is great for people watching, with open windows that bring the noise from Sofia's bar that is the first thing you see when you walk in. To the right there is a dinner area and if you walk past the bar you have another large dinner area that is decorated with walls of wine and Greek architecture. We sat at a table for 6 by the wine and had a very nice meal. We shared a cold seafood antipasto which had all the usuals: squid, shrimp and all the rest. It was done right with just a light vinegar and quite enjoyable. I also had a Caesar salad as a second starter which was about average, not bad at all but no cheese shavings like i usually like it. My main dish was the penne alla vodka which was very enjoyable. Their standard penne vodka comes with scallop and baby shrimp which tasted great! The sauce wasn't overly creamy but was rich enough to enjoy a dip of bread. A little cracked pepper and parmesan cheese made for an excellent dish that i would like to have again. For dessert i cooled off with my favorite sweet, a tartuffo. If you don't know what that is, it's an ice cream bon bon with half chocolate, half vanilla ice cream that has a cherry in the middle and is covered in a shell of milk chocolate. Overall i really enjoyed my meal as did the rest of my family. Our meal was spaced out nicely so we were not rushed and our waiters were attentive and made sure our beverages were never at the bottom. Like any Italian restaurant, it was loud but i'm used to that and overall i have to recommend Sofia's for a nice meal in a great neighborhood. Time your meal out so you walk out around sunset so you can walk it off and check out a great, diverse neighborhood. Great place to take a date or a large group, dress is casual but you should probably wear something decent because it's nice inside! Don't be lazy, people! read more

Waiters refuse to wear their masks despite repeated requests in every dining experience since reopening. Staff, not wearing masks according to NY's legal mandate, talk to each other while carrying food/drinks directly under their mouths and talk in close range to dozens of customers per night. At the very start of our latest dinner, 8/01/2020, we very politely requested our waiter speaking closely to wear his mask (which was on his neck). He responded by refusing to serve us and informed us that he will give our table to a different waiter. We didn't argue. However, he directly addressed my date to add snidely: "Where is your masks (sarcastically)? Why aren't you wearing your masks?" In disbelief we responded "We are customers eating..." He replied "So?" and left the table. I left my date to inform the owner Paul who claimed to have reprimanded the waiter. I offered to order our additional entrees to go asking that the waiter apologize for his statements to my date, but he refused. When I informed him that we were no longer able to return to his establishment, he didn't seem that interested that the service put us at health risks for COVID and majorly insulted my date. Paul responded, "He's not going to apologize." The server instead continued to serve tables around us with the mask half on and speaking loudly to others, ignoring us. Franco, our new server, was polite. NYC restaurants are mandated to provide masks to their employees--but they need to be physically worn in respect to others who need a safe dining experience. There is zero need for the unprofessional attitude from the server nor the lack of solution from the establishment's own owner. read more

After debating on going to Zio Toto or Sofia's for quite a while we decided on Sofia's and was very pleased with it. We came here on a Saturday night with another couple without reservations. We were seated right away. The waiter served us our water and warm bread with both white and whole wheat options in the basket. We started with appetizers of mussels in white garlic sauce and baked clams. Mussels came out along with fried calamari, no baked clams. The waiter apologized and gave us the calamari on the house for his mix up an the baked clams came out shortly after. For entrees the other couple with us ordered Linguine Alle Vongole (linguine with baby clams) went with the white sauce for that and Pollo Scarpariello (chicken in a garlic lemon sauce) they were both satisfied with their meals. As for my bf and I, he got Nodino Di Vitello Al Pepe Verde (veal chop with green pepper corns in some sort of delicious sauce) and I got Petto Di Pollo Allo Champagne (chicken breast in champagne sauce) both were absolutely delicious. Have a gift certificate that was given to me in February 2020 with the exact expiration date February 2020? Strange! This was beginning of the pandemic. Called Sofias several times over this period and got mixed answers as to how long gift certificate would be honored. I got the final answer ... gift certificates expire in one year regardless of the restaurant closures during COVID. During the past week I have eaten at Sofia's twice. First with my husband and a friend for dinner then yesterday for lunch with a friend. Both times the food and the service was excellent. For dinner we were given free Bruschetta, which is thin slices of Italian bread rubbed with garlic and topped with a tomato mixture. It was very tasty. We were then served a basket of warm and extremely fresh and crusty Italian bread. We had baked clams as an appetizer. The clams came out of the kitchen hot and delicious. As an entrée I had an order of properly cooked Orecchette, my husband had Cappellini with Bolognese sauce, and our friend had a Chicken Parm which she loved. All of the food was cooked perfectly by the great team of Italian cooks in the kitchen. Great house wine and cappuccinos topped out the meal. Yesterday at lunch with a different friend, we were served the basket of fresh, warm and crusty bread. We both had Mushroom Risotto as an entrée. Wow it was outstanding! The house wine, cappuccino, and Irish coffee ended the meal Sofia's is an excellent Italian restaurant that quite obviously serves dishes using quality ingredients.
