Sadly, going downhill. First, let me say that we have been customers since 1991. We have seen the restaurant evolve from a very dated facility with all kinds of stuffed animals on the wall to a nice modern space. My main concern is that the flavor profiles and overall quality is changing. The first indication is in the rolls. New customers may not notice, but the rolls have changed in texture and flavor. The next issue was in the flavor and quality of our favorite dishes. We noticed the ratios of the more expensive ingredients have been changed, at least in our most recent visit. Hopefully, we just had a couple of one-off bad experiences. Wait staff and kitchen efficiency remain unchanged and very good. read more

Located on the power corner of Routes 140 and 5 for over thirty years, Sofia's is a local institution. It's more like a diner than a pizza place - hell, their menu rivals anything found on Route 17 in New Jersey or the Sunrise Highway on Long Island. They have three pretty large dining rooms and a bar. We stopped in for lunch yesterday after visiting the Broad Brook Brewery which is pretty much across the street. Lunch was a hamburger and a Turkey Pocket. The burger ran $6.75 and was "served with lettuce, tomato and pickles and your choice of either steak fries, cup of soup or salad". The portion was big, the salad was fresh, and the only quibble we had was that the roll was cold. My Turkey Pocket ran $8.95 and was served "With lettuce, tomato, pickles with choice of French fries, Cup of Soup or Salad (Add Cheese 0.35)". I went for the soup which was a stellar clam chowder served at molten lava temperature. I'm fine with that, I'd rather have soup too hot than lukewarm. Some chowders are thin and watery, some are as thick as mucilage. This was perfect! Great taste, great texture, lots of clams and diced potatoes. My Turkey Pocket was even better- check out how much turkey was crammed onto the sandwich. Even the pickles were great! Service was fine, with multiple check-backs and water refills. Cost us less than $17 for a pleasant meal in a pleasant place. At the end of the day, how can you beat that? read more

This place genuinely *IS* as good as it gets, in my opinion. I've been here several times with friends, and the thing that I just can't get over is how many great seafood options they have. It's sad that most people don't ever think about seafood when they think Italian food- take a good look at Italy and you'll realize that there's a lot of water around it. HEY! Anyhow... I've eaten here several times over the years and I've always come away with a happy face and a full belly, but this recent experience just blew me right away. I got their stuffed salmon, and I can honestly say it wasn't like anything I could have expected or hoped for. The sides were peas cooked with pancetta (I think?), and ... something else that I can't remember offhand but loved equally well. But the fish... the fish itself was amazing. I don't know what was on it, because honestly I didn't really look at the description on the menu, but it just changed the whole game up. Any Italian restaurant with the balls to step away from pasta and pizza gets a second look from me. And any Italian restaurant with the balls to actually cook seafood this well gets at least four stars. And this place has been doing it for years, so five stars it is. read more

Delicious food and terrific service. Our party of 7 came in without reservations and near the end of their day. We also requested a different table than where we were originally seated. No problem. The hostess and waitress were very accommodating. My pan seared scallops were terrific. Tender and flavorful scallops on a bed of pesto pasta. The pesto was a meal on its own. Fresh asparagus cooked just right, plus cherry tomatoes and zucchini. You choose the pasta; I picked angel hair. Everyone else liked their entrees. Our girls went rogue and each ordered bbq chicken wings. I wasn't expecting an Italian restaurant to do wings well but they were impressive. Decided to catch dinner here before going to bright nights in Springfield. The food wasn't that great over all. My daughter had the scallop in pesto cream sauce. Our friend had the lobster ravioli. My wife the prime rib. The scallop dish starts off almost raw vegetables and over cooked scallops and thinnest cream sauce I've ever seen. The lobster ravioli wasn't that great to her edible but lack luster and she had been here before. My pesto pasta was good but nothing amazing. The best thing on the table was the prime rib. Very tasty with an au jus that tasted like it had a touch of maple syrup. We probably would have sent the scallop dish back but we didn't want to wait for another replacement dish to come out. The kids pasta with meatballs I tried a meatball also only ok at best. All in all edible but honestly not worth it. read more

I was recommended this place by a local from East Windsor. I wanted a place that had good pizza. This gentlemen recommended this place for good Italian food. I have to say that after tasting the large pie with extra cheese, sausage and pepperoni that it was a good recommendation. The Christ was tasty, the cheese was tasty, the pepperoni tasted well and not sharp and the sausage was favorable and not salty! My husband and I have been coming here at least once a month for 40 years. Delicious food every single time!! Pizza, sandwiches, salads, meals, all tasty and well-prepared. We especially like to try the wide variety of specials that are offered daily. Their marinara sauce is so delicious and everything is perfectly cooked and fresh. The chicken Parmesan is so good that my adult son uses it as his yardstick to rate the chicken parm at other restaurants. The service is excellent..friendly, attentive and prompt. I was in the area yesterday and decided to pick up a pie, as I've heard good things about their pizza. I did enjoy their crust, but sadly that's where it ended. I ordered a large pepperoni, sausage and onion, unfortunately the onion flavor seemed to overpower everything else. I'm not sure if it's because they used red onion or if their sauce is very oniony.. (most likely it's the red onion). Whatever it was, my minivan still smells like onion pizza today, a full 24 hours after I picked it up and brought it home. I would suggest Sofia's switch to using a sweet onion on their pizzas, and that new comers steer clear of onion topping on their pizzas until Sofia's gets this right. read more

We came here for my birthday dinner. Even thought he parking lot was full, we did not have to wait to be seated. I went with one of the specials this time around. It was a vegetable risotto with scallops, shrimp, mussels and I believe there were clams thrown in. It traditionally comes with a lite wine marinara but I am not a fan of red sauce and seafood. I was given a few alternative choices and went with a garlic white sauce. The portions are enormous so be prepared to take some home. I will admit, I may have over done it with the bread but it was just do good. The other dish we got was another one of the specials: Grilled tips with a bourbon street sauce with vegetable risotto. When this plate came out, you would have sworn it was for a table of people getting ready to eat family style. We had lunch the next day and the rest for dinner that night. Food was great. Service was amazing. She went above and beyond. My only complaint is my brother is handicapped. Walks with a cane. Stroke victim. We were brought to the furthest room by the hostess Bella. We asked for Jayden to be our server. (because she's great) We were asked to sit and wait at the bench (The bar area was in front of us, where we could have sat ) I was hoping we would be sat there. But unfortunately we were sat way in the back room, which was cold and no one else in the area. It took my handicapped brother awhile to make it back there. The hostess didn't seem to care. She passed us twice as we made our way and didn't even apologize after I apologized to my brother how far we had to walk for a table. I complained in front of her!! No comment from her. She heard me. She didn't even walk us to our table..or care.... Beyond rude!! She rushed my son to the table as I was helping my handicapped brother up and guiding him to a table that we didn't know where it was bc she took off and guided my son to the table. No care or worries about me or my brother making it to where we were seated! She was awful. Needs to learn how to read people and their aliments. Needs a lot of coaching to understand people with handicaps! Why didn't she put us in the bar area? Which was easier for all of us. read more

Tried it on the recommendation of a friend. Salad and rolls were good but downhill after that. Was extremely disappointed with the entrees. Lasagne was watery and swimming all over the plate; noodles had no texture and were beyond soggy. A baked shell dish was supposed to have breaded eggplant in it but I didn't see one piece in mine. It did, however, have a nice topping of mozzarella. Very odd dish that had an unappealing presentation like the aforementioned lasagne. I've eaten lunch here before which is why I was willing to drive an hour out of my way to come bring my wife for dinner. The lunch was excellent I had a grinder that was a true Italian combo and it was awesome. For dinner we had the surf and turf. Steak cooked perfectly, medium rare, shrimp were huge and had a buttery Ritz cracker stuffing. We had the Sofia's Italian combo it contained a eggplant parmesan, stuff shells and lasagna. Great American Italian dish. Sauce was excellent pasta was perfect. The cheesy garlic bread was perfect with the side of sauce for an appetizer. We obviously ordered way too much food for 2 people but it was delicious and well well worth it. Our server was excellent and the food came out so fast and timely. This place always seems to be busy and it's for a good reason! I've been quite a few times and always get the chicken parm so I can't speak to anything else! Prices are very fair (about $16 for a salad, pasta, and the chicken parm) but the potions are huge. One serving is definitely enough for two fairly hungry adults, especially after eating the delicious rolls! Pasta sauce isn't anything to write home about, but the parm is incredibly cheesy and fried to a nice crisp. Service is usually good, and decor is very nice, although it does get a bit loud. I took a phone call at dinner and the person on the other end couldn't hear me well. Definitely worth stopping in! read more

They're always quick getting our delivery ready. We get salads usually for take-out. Just a simple house salad- but it is packed with veggies. I always ask for extra vegetables and they always pack the box! The staff is always extremely friendly. We've gone on pasta Thursdays where it is half off, all you can eat pasta. They do have gluten free pasta which is nice. You can make your meal vegan by just getting veggies on your pasta. Overall enjoy going here for a quick night out. We've even had our food delivered to the brewery the plaza over, hubby gets beer I get cider. They're very accommodating! read more

This place is a hidden gem. We went for dinner a couple nights ago and we're so happy we did. I got the shrimp and broccoli with a brandy cream sauce (can't remember the real name) and it was excellent! The portion was huge, had leftovers for lunch the next day which reheated nicely. The complimentary bread was fresh and hot. The atmosphere has an upscale feel with the solid stone table tops and nice woodwork. This place is great! We stopped on our way to NY to go to Cracker Barrel across the street. Lucky us the wait there was an hour so we decided to try Sofia's. The food is down home Italian. My husband loved his scallops over pasta in a cream sauce. I had a peppers and egg grinder, which you don't find on menus very often. Italian comfort food that reminded me of my mother's quick supper when dad worked late. Our waitress Jo Jo was very attentive and really knew the menu and gave us great feedback. We dropped our daughter at BDL and looked up Italian restaurants and found Sofia's. We were seated immediately and were greeted by a friendly waitress. I ordered veal parmigiana and my wife orders Pasta alla Carbonara. The meals came with a small garden salad which was brought out promptly with fresh hot homemade rolls! The house and honey mustard salad dressings were excellent and also homemade. My wife's dinner was HUGE! Enough for 3 people! The sauce was just the right consistency and was delicious! My veal parmigiana plate came out with 2 extra large pieces of thin as paper veal that were lightly breaded and topped with just the right amount of mozzarella. I also received a small bowl of penne on the side. The red sauce was also excellent with just enough small pieces of tomato to call it a marinara. The service was great and seeing that she had several tables to wait on we were impressed. The total tab with 1 glass of wine and a soda was $50. Well worth every penny. We live an hour away but we are planning a return visit with friends in the near future! BTW the menu is extensive! read more

What a niche Sofia's has created in the restaurant business, there is hardly a time when driving by you won't find the parking lot nearly full and for good reason. The owners understand the price point they wish to maintain and have delivered a very good reasonably priced consistent product for many many years. Some might argue there are other restaurants that offer better Italian food, perhaps, but I know of only one in our area that is its equal in price consistency and quality. If constancy matters and you are looking for a budget friendly Italian night out, Sofia's as always delivered for me and they will for you as well. read more

My work frequently orders huge amounts of pizza from Sofia's. It's a common corporations way of saying thank you for treating you like shit. Anyways, I love the pizza here. The crust is very unique and is actually edible, compared to most pizza places. The service is friendly and almost always on time with our order, which is sometimes in excess of 10+ pizzas. The toppings are plentiful and fresh. I really need to order more off their menu instead of pizza, because if their pizza is that good I wonder what the rest of the menu is like. Plus they always have hot girls working the bar and serving. Tried the meatballs, sausage, and meat sauce today. It was friggin outstanding. A family goldmine sitting at the top of the hill. It's always busy and the food is always flowing. It's a family run Italian joint that has been around forever. I've been coming here all my life and still look forward to it. I got a antipasto salad which was huge but quite delicious. Get the house Italian dressing. It's amazing! The rolls come hot out of the pizza oven and are great to use to sop up all the deliciousness left on the bottom of your salad plate. Living right up the street, I pass this restaurant all the time and figured I'd stop in for take-out. I tried to order fried clams and they only had strips. Most restaurants say clam strips when they are offering clam strips and say clams when offering whole belly clams. Good thing I asked if I was being misled since I was. Instead, I ordered fried scallops. It came with french fries and cole slaw. Wow. You would think I ordered gooey grease with a side of scallops. They were soaking wet with grease. The gooey fried coating slopped off when I picked one up with a fork. I had to wipe each one down individually with a paper towel to be able to eat it. They were a bit chewy but not terrible once de-gooed. The french fries were also greasy but rather than dripping with grease, they looked as though they'd been sitting in grease for a while. Despite, that, they weren't terrible, just bad. The cole slaw was okay; not great, not terrible. Had it not been warm, it may have been good. Warm items with mayo just turn me off. Pretty disappointing all around. Will not be back unless dragged by family... which will be doubtful after they read this. read more
