Stopped here for lunch, couple times actually. I like Mexican a lot. Raquel is very nice. Service was top notch. Food was good and generous portions. Horchata was huge! And very good. Only drawback was price. Almost 30 bucks for a lunch. I played some games in their game room afterwards to try my luck, and won some money to cover lunch and then some! Ok, I don't know if I was just really hungry or what.... But the tacos here are GOOD. Like unexpectedly good. After moving to this area, it's been hard finding good quality and good flavor places unless you go to Crystal Lake or Kildeer. However, I think this place is a local Mexican food gem. I got 4 tacos for pick up: ground beef, steak, pastor and barbacoa. Right off the bat, all tacos had a very generous amount of meat and onion/cilantro (my choice of topping) in them. However, on top of that here is what I loved about each taco: Ground beef: it was actually quite well seasoned! All other ground beef tacos I've had in the area are just plain. This one had a beautiful seasoning flavor to it. It caught me by surprise! Steak: it was your typical small cubed low quality taco meat steak. Not as flavorful as the ground beef, but honesty still really good Al pastor: the SEASONING and FLAVOR were just awesome . Honestly most well seasoned pastor I've had in a while. What for me personally could have made this a 10/10, would be if they served it with grilled pineapple mixed in. However that's just my personal flavor preference lol. Overall, still one of the best Al pastor in the area. Barbacoa: it was super moist and tender and again the flavor profile of the way they seasoned it when cooking was just Also got chips and guacamole. Very good. Nice chunks, and not puréed like some places do. Overall I will definitely be coming back here to try the other dishes! Highly recommend! read more

Sophia's is located conveniently in a strip mall off Route 176, Liberty Street in Island Lake. While we enjoy their meals, they make the best homemade flan, complete with carmel sauce. My husband's office is in the area, however we live in Bartlett so this place is off the beaten path, at least for me. My husband proudly comes here (at least) once a week and has for a couple years. When my husband raves about a taco, my ears perk up! We were in the area so decided to pop in for an early dinner. We like our Mexican food, and I recently came here for the first time so let me tell you why this place stands out... From walking up to walking in, it's apparent cleanliness is a priority. There's hand sanitizer in every direction and Clorox wipes to help deep clean between customers. Masks are required and worn. Much appreciated, especially considering I work for a local health department and truthfully am anxious about being anywhere except my home these days. Anyways... THE FOOD! My hubby ordered his normal, 4 steak tacos. I ordered the chicken enchiladas rojas and a chorizo taco (had to try them out!) Mexican style. I tried his steak, fantastic flavor which honestly you can't say about most places. Meat is rarely seasoned on a taco, so it's that much more appreciated when it's packed with flavor! The enchiladas were honestly a familiar taste, which isn't a bad thing! The sauce just reminded me of a sauce I've either made or had before... and very delicious!! The chicken was chopped up and very tender. Not dry at all. The rice and beans were good too! My chorizo taco was sooo good! To be honest, the salsas here at Sofia's steal the show. Don't miss this Mexican restaurant in Island Lake. It's easy to pass by but don't! Stop in and eat! Terrific service and excellent food. Had Steak fajitas and Shrimp in garlic. Plenty of food and brought home leftovers. Very good guacamole too. They have a nice selection of beer and naturally, a good Margarita. Nice little find. Stumbled across this place and it was a pleasant surprise. The service was really good. They only had one lady working but she did a great job taking care of our family. For the most part we all got burritos. They were huge. I got the pork burrito and it was delicious. The flavor of the pork was great. My wife and I both got margaritas as well and they were good. Perfect amount of alcohol. Small restaurant but it was perfect for what they are. Only downfall is that they were extremely expensive. Way more then we pay at the Mexican restaurant we go to locally. We used Eduardo's Catering/Sophia's Place for a private birthday party in October 2023. Eduardo could not have been more accommodating or easy to work with, and the food was GREAT! Taco bar, quesadillas, chili rellenos, and chicken fajitas - all received rave reviews from us and our guests. The service provided by Eduardo and his staff was excellent, and again totally accommodating to our needs. Their bartender was in an accident, so Eduardo filled in as bartender at the last minute and did a super job of mixing margaritas and serving mixed drinks (plus more). They cleaned up and boxed the remaining food for us, so we had to do very little. We highly, highly recommend Eduardo's Catering! read more

This food is absolutely amazing!! Last night was the first time I finally tried Sofias, I have heard only good things and read wonderful reviews and have been wanting to try it for a long time. Not sure what took me so long because I only live five minutes away!! This is now my favorite Mexican restaurant. I ordered chicken, Al Pastore, Barbacoa tacos with a side of rice and beans and everything was very very delicious. I got it as a carry out and ordered from the parking lot it took about 25 minutes to be ready but while I waited I enjoyed their gaming room inside and a corona which was a highlight of my day as I was very stressed from work. First time here...couldn't find the place at first because the store sign in lights is a liquor store. It was only when we pulled into a parking spot to scan the store fronts that we saw a paper sign in the window that said Sofia's. Very weird to have a restaurant inside of a liquor store. The place was clean and the service prompt, though the young waitress was confused a few times on our orders and wasn't very friendly. The woman who brought out our food and then checked on us (the owner?) was friendly though. Food portions were huge and food was really good (chicken tacos, shrimp diablo, steak quesadilla). All three of us couldn't finish our dinners and took food home. We liked that we got the choice of corn or flour tortillas with everything we ordered. The chicken tacos were the most full ones I've ever seen in a mexican restaurant. However, I wasn't crazy about the chicken. It was diced instead of shredded, so it was a bit dry. A weird thing was the sauces they serve with the tortilla chips. We were expecting your standard bowl of salsa, but instead they serve you plastic squeeze bottles of three different sauces. The red sauce was good - had the traditional salsa flavor. The green verde was just "OK". I didn't try the creamy green sauce as both my husband and son said it was really hot. read more

We went there today only to be told we could not sit inside and eat, (asked why and the guy at the counter said, "sorry, that's what the owner wants", then he said we would have to order our food, pick it up from the counter and then go outside and eat....WHAT DA?.....but there are machines there to play, so in the time we played the gaming machines, would could have ordered our food and the guy could have brought it over just a few steps away and make these 2 customers be HAPPY!!!! - Sadly, we will never be going in there again. If you want great mexican food and actually be treated like you mean something to the establishment, go to El Norteno. Almost forgot, got what we thought were 2 margaritas while we played the machines, but instead we got 2 plastic cups of margarita mix for $16.00!!!!
