The dishes we tried: -Alcapurra Vegana de Yuca: Fritters from Yuca stuffed with seasoned soy meat- This one was so fun, interesting and delicious. The outside masa dough is made from mashed fried yuca. -Habichuelas red kidney bean and potatoes side stew: this one was more delicious than expected. Not a ton of beans and potatoes and we wished there was more in it but really delicious flavor! -Mofongo Solo: Was good but a tad less flavor than other mofongos I have had maybe. It was delicious when we put the stew on it. -Mushroom empanada Everything was delicious and the staff was great! Very thankful for how vegan and vegetarian friendly they are too. I believe they have vegan mayo available for dishes with mayo. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! An Evie favorite!

Unassuming from the exterior, the place definitely gives off an authentic vibe. And it was crowded! Started with cocktails: him a Batey Colada and me, a guava martini. Both were delicious but the martini did not need green olives - it's a sweeter drink and the olives made it kinda weird. Next was the appetizer round: Bolitas de Queso - amazing balls of melted cheese with a pineapple guava rum sauce to die for. Tried the Alcapurrias - plantains stuffed with beef. We didn't care for those. Main dishes were El Cacique for me and for him Churrasco Chimichurri with added shrimp. Both were incredibly flavorful and like nothing we've ever had. Again, we have never had Puerto Rican food. The texture of the pastele threw me off a little but it was good. The roasted pork of my dish was tender and delicious. For dessert we shared a pastelillo de guayaba - a puff pastry with guava. Light and delicious. I was intrigued by the Puerto Rican sodas however when I saw that they serve malta - I had to have it. Haven't had one since I was a kid growing up with Cuban neighbors. Although Puerto Rican food may not be on the top of my favorites, I can't rate Batey anything other than 5 stars. Excellent customer service, obviously authentic, beautiful presentation. I encourage you to give it a shot!

The restaurant is a very good size with lots of room and tables available. The decor is that of PR culture which is very colorful and bright. We started off with canoa which is a plantain stuffed with ground beef and cheese. It was very hot and delicious! For our "platos principals" (main entrees) I had the pechuga de pollo (chicken breast with grilled onions) with mofongo as my side (also comes with a side salad). It was very tasty and not dry at all. BFF had the pernil (pulled pork) with arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas) as his side which also came with a side salad. For dessert we shared the tembleque which is a coconut pudding but not in the traditional sense of pudding (more like a jelly texture). BFF also ordered coquito (holiday rum drink) & apparently our server (Sophia) omitted the rum so the owner came by and offered a fresh glass. Speaking of, everything was wonderful except that Sophia seemed to have a bit of a poor attitude as she wasn't too friendly. I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt as perhaps she wasn't feeling well but out of the corner of my eye she had this almost "eyeroll" look. Perhaps she just didn't want to be there (she was friendly upon us leaving and thanked us). Anyway, I highly recommend this establishment. Both food and ambience was great and the service was too.
