My husband and I really enjoyed this Puerto Rican casual counter service spot! Loved their house made hot sauce. It was different! The dishes we tried: -Alcapurra Vegana de Yuca: Fritters from Yuca stuffed with seasoned soy meat- This one was so fun, interesting and delicious. The outside masa dough is made from mashed fried yuca. -Habichuelas red kidney bean and potatoes side stew: this one was more delicious than expected. Not a ton of beans and potatoes and we wished there was more in it but really delicious flavor! -Mofongo Solo: Was good but a tad less flavor than other mofongos I have had maybe. It was delicious when we put the stew on it. -Mushroom empanada Everything was delicious and the staff was great! Very thankful for how vegan and vegetarian friendly they are too. I believe they have vegan mayo available for dishes with mayo. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. The authentic Puerto Rican food here brought my partner to tears. It was exactly like his mother used to make. The cashier/ server and the chef could not have been nicer. The chef went over his recipe and we discovered the one key ingredient we were missing. Everything was delicious and the best version of each dish and beverage in a cozy setting. Never have I ever had Puerto Rican food before and I've been missing out! We have a couple we have a monthly dinner meet up at places we have never tried before. We actually have a wheel we spin to pick where we go and this month the wheel landed on Phoenix Coqui. It's a small place but air conditioning worked excellent. The owner had great energy and was super nice. Food was sooo good. I felt the owner described it perfectly. Their food is all cooked with spices. Not spicy spices but flavor! We tried the best seller: Plato de Pernil. Which was pulled Pork with rice. I'm not a huge pulled pork fan I'll admit but I wanted to try it. It was delicious! Had just the right amount of flavor to it. Wasn't dry at all. Rice was very flavorful Then we got various empandillas: ground beef, chicken, beef and cheese, and pizza. Again. Everything was super flavorful! Then they give you habanero sauce and a creamy aioli sauce to eat with everything. Delish!! I want to go back to try the mofongo! Fantastic! We recently visited Puerto Rico and we have been missing their great food. This place was just what we needed! Arroz con gandules was so tasty and the shrimp mofongo was delicious! Finally got around to dining here. We live in Mesa and don't venture much into Phoenix. We enjoyed lunch. Loved the atmosphere. Place was busy. We ordered pastelon and jibaritos and of course flan. Never had cheese on my pastelon but I know it's popular. I am a traditionalist though. Pastelon was meaty the flavor of sweet maduros was overshadowed by the amount of meat. The pork in the jibaritos was flavorful but dry. We finished off with coffee and coco flan which was very good. Will have to return and try something different. Tried out Phoenix Coqui for a quick weeknight dinner. We dined in but it might be more of a takeout spot, there's ample parking in the rear. The menu is short and is predominantly in Spanish. Take some time reviewing so that you don't end up disappointed. We tried the Mofongo con Pernil and chicken/beef empanadas. The pernil (pork) was marinated well and very flavorful, however, the mofongo didn't add much to the meal. The empanadas were priced well and flavorful, they paired well with the homemade sauce provided. Overall, this spot is great if you're a fan of Puerto Rican food. Definitely not our first visit and won't be our last. We have been stopping at Phoenix Coqui since they were a food truck. We usually end up with their carne frita, pernil, and amarillos. I have also tried their alcapurria de yuca and their mofongo. Everything has been delicious. Definitely can't say enough great things about this place as far as their food goes. The pernil is delicious, melts in your mouth and super soft. We love their arroz con gandules. Staff can sometimes be a bit rude, depends who you deal with. Just not very welcoming and sometimes can have an attitude. I also wish their mayo sauce cups were actually filled. Sometimes I get cups that are 1/4 filled, it's insane. I would rather pay extra and have a full 2oz cup. Last two times we came here I asked for extra sauce when I ordered on the phone, I didn't get any. BFF is Puerto Rican & was looking forward to this place which has been a dine in restaurant for about a year now after being a food truck. Service was excellent but didn't care for placing your order at the counter nor the plastic containers that your food comes in. Seating is first come first serve and room is pretty tight in the dining area. As for the food I ordered the mofongo with pollo (chicken) but they were out so I opted for pernil (shredded pork). Everything was very tasty! I just ordered a canned soda but they do offer some alcoholic beverages. BFF ordered a coquito (basically their version of a rum and egg nog) which he loved. Would have given this place 5 stars had the dining room not been so tight, served on real plates and silverware and full dining service. read more

It is a species of frog found in Puerto Rico. Though I did not live in a Puerto Rican household. My Cuban Pops made sure we appreciated cuisine from the Caribbean and Spain. Growing up in Chicago, we could just go visit friends and enjoy a great home cooked Puerto Rican meal or go to Humboldt Park and have many options. It was not long ago there was no Puerto Rican restaurants available to us Desert Rats. I remember begging my friends parents to cook some Puerto Rican food. I am glad we have some options available to us now! Being a Phoenix Coqui fanatic from their food truck days. These guys have always put out great food! Rarely do i ever leave reviews under 4 star, but have to comment in hopes that it may help out the establishment. First the staff was friendly and food ordered was on time. Just wanted to try, after reminiscing about my 2 trips to Puerto Rico in 2020 and 21, had some amazing food. With prices being what they are now, i decided to get a staple item, i ordered the Empendas carne, and 1 pizza empanada for about 9$ highly disappointed, lacked flavor and was empty inside. Maybe my memory of amazing stuffed empanadas inCondado PR spoiled/skewed me, the cost was 1/2 and had way more filling, flavor(meat-cheese). Growing up in NY I loved having a variety of options of different kinds of food to eat. Puerto Rican food was 1 of my favorites and when I moved to AZ I discovered Phoenix Coqui. When I first moved here they had a food truck which I've been to several times but this weekend I went to the grand opening of their new restaurant. I have tried their Empanada setas Seasoned sautéed mushroom filled empanadilla Tostones Fried green plantains with garlic-mayo sauce Arroz con gandules Seasoned rice with pigeon peas I'm glad to see that they were able to open a place in Midtown. Everything there i tried was delicious. Now all they need is to make a vegan/vegetarian Mofongo bowl. I will be back. read more

We wanted to like this place because some Puerto Rican reviewers raved, but we had an awful experience and got food poisoning. The food and service were both an utter disappointment. We will never go back. My empanadillas were pretty much all (bleh deep fried) pastry with very little filling. The rice was meh. My companion said that his Cubano sandwich wasn't good. We went on Valentine's Day because of their special email offer, which we had to ask for multiple times due to a shift change, even arguing with the second cashier that it was real, who finally asked her boss and the special deal was already programmed into their computer. I pointed out their funny email, which in Spanish gave customers a 15% discount, but the English words offered 20%, see picture. This place just doesn't compare to La Famosa in DC.
