I have been seeing Bennito at Soho Atelier for about a year now. Going to his salon has been a complete game changer for me, someone who rarely would get professional haircuts or color done. I have kept up with my cuts every 3 months and he has done a beautiful balayage on me. He is an artist and is a craftsman in all things hair! I give his salon 5 stars bc both he and Sarah (another hair stylist there) do excellent work! I was very disappointed in my color service that I went to Sally's and dyed over it the next day. Knowing how dry my hair was, they decided putting bleach in my hair would get me the color I wanted. Terrible terrible mistake. Now my ends are just fried and keep falling off. A week before this, I was in to get low lights. Since I dyed my hair black previously they had to strip the color before putting in color. It came out to be a light brown/red color and Benito told me to come back in to get it toned/lightened-free of charge. The following week after several phone calls, one voicemail, and no call back I decide to just drop by. They were not answering their phone, even trough the dial pad outside the building--I only got in because someone was walking out. I walked in and reminded him that he said I could get it toned, where he replied saying "toning won't work we'll have to bleach it." Without me knowing how terrible It would be for my hair I agreed. I was charged $80 for something that ruined my hair! Not only was it damaging, it was chunky and a yellow/orange brassy color. So disappointing. I put blonde in my hair last summer at a different salon and it turned out fine and not damaged. Sadly, I liked my cut the first time but will not be returning because of the color service and because of how hard it was to get ahold of them. read more

I purchased a Groupon for the Brazilian Blowout Treatment. I absolutely loved my service, Benito (what a treat!), Gunther (his dog-so cute and well behaved!) and the results (smoothe 'Victoria Secret' Hair.) I can't wait to try him for a haircut- he gave me the most incredible, effortless blowdry. It's been 3 months since my service and my hair is still extra smoothe! You can't beat that... Although the space itself is this gorgeous, industrial-urban design, it's a bit of a hike for me. That's my ONLY downfall which has NOTHING to do with his skills or expertise (THAT IS 5 STARS WORTHY!), It was just farther than im used to traveling. If you have curly hair BEWARE. I initially was drawn towards it because one of the workers (Benito) was described as someone experienced with curly hair/coarse African American hair. As a natural curly haired woman, I am always searching for someone who knows how to treat curls. I purchased a voucher for haircut, deep condition and style. As I immediately walk in through the door I'm not even greeted or asked what I was there for etc like common courtesy of any other place. The first thing that comes out of the stylist's mouth is "um is that mine Sharon? She needs to make sure she has time unless she's going to leave it curly." Like omg here comes this girl with big curly hair . The next comment that he made was that he also knew another girl with "tumble weed" hair, Tarzan and Jane "me Tarzan you Jane" hair, jungle hair. And these were his exact words. I find this very racist, offensive and depicting especially for someone who claims to be experienced with curly hair. I sit on the chair and he proceeds to tell me "um you're not planning on straightening it right because we only have one hour and it looks like it will take a long time". First of all, no where in the groupon was there a mention of a time limit. Second of all I was attended at around 2:15 or 2:20 when my appointment was at 2, so clearly the person before me didn't have no "one hour". Like I mentioned before, STYLE was part of the service but here he was hesitant and complaining to do something I paid for. Lucky for him I did not want to straighten it, but I did ask him to diffuse my hair to which he seemed to gain an attitude and half as*ed it, left 90% of my hair still wet. I also should mention that my hair is very thin, with easy manageable curls and it takes one stroke to straighten a piece. I also asked for long bangs was given very very short hideous bangs. And without asking me he seems to have given me multiple layers as well. Also asked specifically for a SINGLE inch off, he cut off about 6-7 inches off my hair which was well past my breast and in a couple of months would've almost reached my butt! Now I can barely feel it on my back when wet! I went in there with my beautiful defined curls, came out with a frizzy mess, I hope my curls recover from this. I cannot even style this hair. Overall disappointed with the experience, I felt so out of place and unwelcomed. Not to mention the service itself was TRASH. read more

I usually dread haircuts because I hate the salon environments...but Soho Atelier was a welcomed break from the norm! The salon, while clean and professional, had a much more casual vibe in a really cool building. The area itself is a little sketchy, but the interior didn't reflect that at all. Sarah was awesome! Super personal and gave me a great haircut. I used a Groupon, so it was an amazing deal for a haircut. The only real complaint I had was some confusion scheduling and difficulty contacting the salon. The salon has two locations-- one of which is in Michigan. It was a little confusing trying to figure out which salon I had actually booked online with. But they called and cleared everything up within a few hours. Just be careful if you book online :) read more

In love with Soho. I first came here from a groupon I got for a Brazilian blowout with Sara. I recently moved from Los Angeles and needed a new salon. Sara did a fantastic job on the blowout, exactly what I was used to and wanted. Perfect and saves me plenty of time in the morning. Sarah is incredible! I have a full head of long, extremely thick, wavy Latina hair - not for the faint of heart. Sarah knew exactly what to do to take out the weight and properly frame my face (with my hair this is not as easy as it may sound - a number of stylists in very trendy Chicago salons have left me with a mushroom head). She employed techniques that I have never seen before (including a really cool French technique), and was careful to always explain to me exactly what she was doing, which I really appreciated. She was efficient, too! I got a Brazilian blowout and cut in a little over two hours, which is pretty insane considering I'm used to a cut alone taking that long. The icing on the cake was Sarah's personality: She was very fun/funny and we had a great time. I walked out of there looking and feeling fabulous and will most definitely be back. First time visiting this salon, Groupon did well for me today! I walked in the room embarrassed of my hair, it is just a challenge to find a good stylist for me. My hair is very dry, the roots were bad on me and I was struggling brittle split ends. I'm so happy with my results from Sarah! She brought my hair to life again! Do not come here if you expect to get quality work. Benito ruined my hair. He left patches of orange in my hair as he tried to do highlights because he didn't leave the bleach on long enough and the bleach in the foils bled through. Maybe it was because he stopped working on my hair in the middle of him weaving it to go update his website about his services! He also answered a bunch of personal phone calls while working on me and even had the audacity to have his co worker cut his hair while he stuck me under the dryer for my hair to process. Apparently he forgot about me under the dryer while he barked at his coworker to cut the sides of his hair and I had to get Sara's attention to come check on my hair as I burned under the dryer. It was a disaster. He also talks about inappropriate stuff as he cuts your hair and it made me uncomfortable. He even talked bad about previous clients of his which is highly unprofessional and he even used their names as he gossiped with his coworkers. Save your money on Groupon and go elsewhere if you want your hair to look good& you want a good experience at a beauty salon which is supposed to make you feel great. I'm absolutely disgusted at my hair as I have never had patchy blotches in it. And to add insult to injury, Benito tried to justify the orange and yellow splotches he left in my hair saying that it would blend in fine underneath. I didn't pay money to have to my hair down all the time so that the blotches and patches aren't showing to cover up his poor and unprofessional work. Shame on you Benito! read more

I liked how it turned out but I felt like the stylist wasn't really attentive to what I wanted - he would cut and then ask what I thought. I went to Soho Atelier to get a trim. I told the stylist that I just need a trim ( max. 2 inch off ) and I mentioned that I am trying to get rid of layers in my hair and have a straight line. Everything was great, until.....I see her twisting my hair and THINNING it!!!!! I freaked out and she noticed it, but she kept thinning it and told me it's some cool technique and it will look great. Never mind that my hair is completely straight and I have balayage. Honestly, I regret for not stopping her from thinning my hair and leaving the salon. My hair is shoulder length now and I have some random strands which are 3-4 inch short. Maybe the special technique was great, but not on my hair and I DID NOT ASK for it. Not sure what to do with my hair now... :-( read more

Sarah is AWESOME. You know you have a great stylist when they can explain what they're doing and why, which she does impeccably. I've gone to her three times and every time I go, she will be frank and honest if something I want isn't possible because of the way my hair is but will offer feasible solutions that are as close as possible to what I want. I've already gotten my hair cut, dyed bright lavender and titanium, and a Brazilian blowout with her and would trust her to help me pick a short haircut. I know how hard it is to find a good stylist (I've been searching for years and even in other cities) and I have been so happy with my results every time I go in, I can easily and confidently declare my loyalty to her and the salon. I was not impressed by the service at this salon at all. However, that's my bad ....next time I will stick to Gilt instead of Living Social to purchase a better experience for a simple haircut and conditioning treatment. First of all, the scheduling process was unprofessional and my needs were not accommodated by the salon manager when I specifically asked for a specific stylist. Both stylist were not available but she never offered next availability. Second of all, I attempted to schedule the appointment and the girl who answer the phone was rude and took my number to confirm my appointment but never called me back because apparently she lost my number! My experience with Jatie was okay. She was giving me healthy and positive feed back about my hair and she was very good with her skills. After she was done with my simple haircut, I asked for change for a $20......apparently the salon had no cash and I felt I needed to give her a $20 dollar tip for a $25 living social coupon. I never gave any salon $20 tip for a haircut. The area was in the middle of nowhere and the nearest bank was driving distance. I can't believe if this salon is suppose to be a business I have no idea why they didn't carry any cash for tips. I thought that was ridiculous and when I left I completely told myself never again!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I highly recommend Jatie leave that salon because it's not doing her any justice! read more

I bought a groupon for a haircut, deep condition, and style and read the reviews and thought that I would have a good experience at the salon. I had a thursday night appointment and thought a weeknight would be best to go assuming it will not be busy. When I got to the salon, I told the stylist I had an appointment at 5:30. She asked who I made the appointment with. I told her I don't remember which stylist I had an appointment with, but I told her my name and what time I am scheduled for a hair cut. She told me to wait because she was working on a customer who came to her appointment late for personal reasons. So I'm waiting and Jatie (stylist) asks "you're not in a rush, are you?" I didn't want to wait long because I took public transportation and wasn't familiar with the neighborhood. I asked her how long it would take and she didn't give me a definite answer - she said she would work on coloring the other girls hair and then give me a hair cut. Benito (another stylist) walks in and offers to help Jatie by washing my hair. He gives me some advice about coloring my hair while he is washing my hair and putting in some deep condition. The whole washing experience wasn't great. He didn't even wash my roots or give a short head massage. Now comes the waiting. I wait for nearly an hour while Jatie colors a girl's hair, and Benito colors another girls hair. Another girl walks in saying she has an appointment with Jatie. How do you have 4 customers and only 2 stylists??? I finally get a haircut from Jatie and it wasn't anything special. I wanted 2 inches off, which she did. She did something weird to thin out my hair (cut off random pieces in the middle of my hair). I usually don't complain about haircuts because it will grow back, so I didn't ask for anything in particular. I did notice that it looked somewhat uneven in the front, but I thought that maybe it was because it wasn't styled yet. Benito helps Jatie again by blowdrying my hair so that she could assist the other girl who was waiting. He was SO rough blowdrying my hair and tousling it around. He blowdried close to my roots and I can feel (and SEE!) the heat on my scalp. I ended up washing my hair when I got home because 1. he didn't wash my roots and 2. the products he put in my hair (mousse and Moroccan oil) made my hair feel sticky. I was so disappointed after I washed and styled by own hair to see that my haircut was uneven. As I said, I usually do not complain about my hair cuts, but this was a bad experience even though they kept apologizing for making me wait. I wasn't expecting to be at the salon for 2 hours for a hair cut. Even with the groupon deal, it was not worth going to this salon. read more

This is my second visit to this salon and once again I had an exceptional experience. I have had some bad haircuts in Chicago and needed a new stylist since my former stylist relocated out of state. My first visit was back in December, I had scheduled this to fix a bad haircut that I had received at a different salon about a week prior. Benito did exactly what I wanted, explained everything his was doing and every product he was using as well as very entertaining to chat with. My 2nd visit was earlier today and just as I had hoped, my hair looks great and I had another great visit. I have long hair and am very particular about the length and layers, I know that I don't have to worry about my hair as long as I'm seeing Benito. I tried to go blonde before and because of previous dark color, it turned an apricot color. He put in the extra effort to correct it and now it is beautiful blonde! I wish I could give zero stars. I talked to the owner Benito, and asked him if he was well versed in textured and curly hair and he assured me he did all kinds of hair and that he had no problem. I discussed how the Groupon stated a hair cut and I was not comfortable with that and could I get a deep condition instead. He told me to come in and that would be fine. I scheduled the appointment and bought my Groupon. My appointment was at 6 pm on Friday 4/28/17. I arrived on time and he had someone else in his chair, which is not uncommon for a hair stylist. I waited about 10 minutes as he finished up the process (color) on the client in his chair. Then he took my hair down and began to praise me on how beautiful my hair was and how he has done several celebrities hair and that he could do my hair. I said if it is ok I would like to stick with the Groupon, and he could give me a cut, but more of a trim. He agreed. He then began to color my hair. He, unlike most colorist, did not section my hair off, he just placed the color around the crown of my hair. The Groupon stated a full color. He placed me under the dryer, with the color on for 15 minutes and I waited again as he continued with his other client. I waited probably another 10 minutes, after the dryer had stopped before he washed me. After the wash, he began to cut my hair. I asked him to trim it and try to even it out more as I had a Devachun cut for curly hair. He was not familiar but began to cut off large parts of my hair. I reminded him that I primarily wear my hair curly and he said he wasn't done he wanted to smooth it out to finish it (initially we discussed him simply diffusing my hair.) I begin to get very nervous at this point because after the cut my hair looks like a Christmas tree, my hair was uneven, poorly shaped and I WAS VERY WORRIED. He then places a quarter size amount of color on the very top of my head and tells me it didn't take. I knew it didn't take, because he did not use enough product, he did not separate the hair, or comb the through. Finally, I could still see my gray. He put me back under the dryer for 15 minutes, rewashed and conditioned my hair. He then began to blow dry it, and this was another disaster. He spent only 30 minutes blow-drying my very thick curly hair. He took the scissors and began to cut more! He took out the flat iron and just haphazardly ran it through my hair. He began to curl my hair and I asked him not to I would prefer it just straight. He then tells me that my hair does not get straight, and offered me the iron to do myself. He then proceeds to curl my hair. After 4 curls I asked again, can you please not do that, just blow it out and I will leave. He gets mad and brushes my hair out. I get out the chair and begin to gather my things and he tells me I owe him an additional 25 dollars for his time and effort. I ask him why would I do that and he did not do what I paid for? He then becomes belligerent, and starts yelling at me, saying that I am not right and that I am a counselor (which he learned through small talk). He walked circles around me yelling at me. At this point, this 5'10 man is screaming at me that I am not right, and is trying to insight a fight. I began to get very nervous for my safety. I threw the money on the counter and left. As I walked out angry, and scared, I pulled the door behind me and it slammed. He yelled out to me " You don't have to slam my door petty!" That was the worst experience with a hairdresser I have ever had. He did not fulfill the Groupon and then charged me more money. I should have checked yelp first, this was the most HORRIBLE experience I have ever had with a stylist. Sidenote: Sarah has had several great reviews and while she did not do my hair she was very nice and her clients were all very happy. read more

I really enjoyed my visit to SoHo. First, I had a car issue which got me 20 minutes late to me appointment but the owner promised to wait 30 mins before he would leave since I was his last client. When I got there, I was confused on how to get in but when I called the owner thought I was calling to tell him I was going to be even later and that he wouldn't stay. Since he sent that in a text, I couldn't get him on the phone I just figured out how to get up to the salon by myself. Parked right in front of the building, no problem, but then I had to be buzzed in, someone was leaving so I just snuck in, Inside, it's more clear. By the elevator the business names and floors are listed so I made my way up to the third floor and wandered around until I found the salon. After the difficulty getting inside, me running late and having a groupon, I prepared for a bad visit. I got the opposite. B (the owner) was friendly, talkative, and passionate about his businesses. I chopped 14 inches of my hair, which he straightened and measured so the hair could be used by others for extensions. Such a drastic cut didn't freak me out because he angled and styled it in a way that suits my face and is easy for a girl like me to pull off since I can't style hair. Everyone says my hair look better now and think with or without the groupon this place is a find. read more
