Let me add my high praises to the many already given to Soho Computer Repair! Wow. Never better service ever. I've owned several laptops and many desktops, many of which I've taken in to various computer shops for upgrades and/or repairs. This time, I had to take in my (barely one year old) Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga -- motherboard had blown. After checking with a couple of different repair shops and even getting one to look at it, I was not confident that those shops could do a good job. So I kept searching and found John at Soho -- I felt completely confident after just a short telephone conversation and I brought it down to his shop so he could do a physical check on it himself. In spite of being pretty busy (a steady stream of customers coming and going) he took the time right away to plug it in, give me a very reasonable estimate and when I mentioned that I was going out of town he offered to try and get it done before I left! I really didn't expect all of that, but was so pleased, that I paid for the parts in advance (as per usual) and left with high hopes. I heard from him that very day (a Saturday) with some questions about the exact model, etc. (as Lenovo isn't very good at putting that info on the back of their machines, so when you buy one, make a note for your files like I did). I was impressed that he took the time right away to confirm that (none of the other places I went to did that - they went solely by the serial number which doesn't give the full information about the model for the mother board) -- Then he must have ordered the part that day, because within a week, the part was in, he did the work, and checked everything out and then called me -- his estimate was so accurate, that all I owed was the taxes! I'm keeping his contact info handy for whatever other computers/tablets we may wish to upgrade or needs repairs!!! Seriously, I've owned computers since the 1980s and this guy is the best we've ever found in terms of knowledgeable, skilled, friendly, reasonably priced, and all around expert on repairs and other questions. He was very up to date on the latest technology, finding the right parts and everything in between. His shop is on S. Beretania, upstairs and down the hall -- parking at meters out front, or perhaps at the Safeway across the street -- worth the effort! read more

Soho was one of the first businesses I found on Yelp that had good reviews and was in a convenient location, so I called ahead and they said they'd be willing to take a look at my computer ASAP. At the moment, my computer is literally my life since my research for work is on it and I'm nearly done in writing my thesis for school. John (there are two Johns-- I saw the Chinese John) took a look at my computer and he was able to diagnose and fix the problem within an hour!!! Come to find out I needed a new battery for my computer. Even though my computer was plugged in at the time that it went dead, the battery seemed to have still been affecting my computer's performance and was short-circuiting the entire system. Altogether, the cost was ~$78 for fast and EXCELLENT service along with a replaced (refurbished) battery. I've taken my computer into another repair center where they charged me nearly $75 for JUST running diagnostics. The great deal that Soho offers is that it's $29 for diagnostics. Then, if you opt to go with them to repair your computer, that initial $29 will go towards the cost of repairs! Also, a new battery would cost me well over $100, and they helped me save money by supplying a refurbished battery. Before my computer broke down, my battery lasted for 5 minutes (if even). Now, I've got a battery that will last me for 2 hours. 20/20 hindsight, it was a blessing that my computer broke down since I ended up with a better performing computer after it was repaired :) I took a friend to Soho a couple of days later and we met the other John :) Both Johns are very friendly and helpful. My friend went in to buy a replaced refurbished battery for her Apple laptop (not sure which series). She bought one for ~$80! And the refurbished battery was nearly brand new (only was used to charge a previous Apple computer twice). Hopefully, I won't have another computer mishap anytime soon. But in the meantime, I'll keep referring everyone else to Soho! read more

My old laptop didnt go past the blue screen of death after i turned it on. I thought I lost my precious documents and pictures forever. But the folks at Soho Computer Repair was able to get into my hard drive, grab the documents and pictures and load them into an external. What a lifesaver! Was looking for a power cord for my old Toshiba laptop since I left mine at home (California) on my trip to Honolulu. Found this shop in my Google research and tried it. When I got there, he was tending to an older couple and had to wait. I observed a very patient, friendly person explain in detail all of the questions they had and more (some of the questions were repetitive but he was patient and answered everything that was asked). AND yes, after spending the time to search through all of his inventory (nada), he looked even more and found one laying around on his repair bench (patience). I read the reviews and I have to agree...John is the BEST!!! He is so helpful and knowledgeable. So personable...I cannot explain how shocked I was to have heard such a friendly, helpfful, personable person on the other end of the phone...someone so willing to try to help you find a way to find a solution to your problem. What a delight! He actually asked me what he could do to help me make my computer work better for me...huh? Usually when I take my PC to other places, the first thing they ask is how much I am willing to spend for how little. Not John, he wanted to help me make my computer work for me. How neat! He was so patient with me, someone who knows nothing about computers except to turn this thing on every day and see what people think of different places to eat and what people think of different services. So I dropped my laptop, lands on the tile in my room, screen is cracked in the upper left corner and starts glitching and spazzing out. So, I grab my phone and look on yelp to see who can get my computer fixed the fastest. All the previous reviews here are true. I call up the shop, leave a message. In the meantime I'm getting quotes from everyone else, and I expected it to be pricy but not that much. Within half and hour braddah John calls me back and lays out all my options. I explain that I'm a college student and I need my laptop asap. He says no worries, I think I have the part for you, come down when you can and I'll have it done in a day. So I'm thinking its gonna be like 500 bucks just for the part itself and then another 200 for the labor like everyone else is quoting me. I get in and he's like, 375 for the screen, and then I kinda wait for him to say what the labor costs....but that was it. I left my computer there for little less than 2 hours and when I got it back it was working like brand new. John knows his stuff, has great customer service, at great prices. Man oh man, John is the best. I sat on my laptop and cracked the screen. Coincidentally my friend had done the same thing a few days prior. I went to best buy in Pearl city (will review them shortly) and the guy at best buy flipped up my laptop and said "this will be about 3 or 400 dollars, let me show you some of the latest laptops we have for sale". I promptly picked up laptop and walked out. By the off chance I googled "computer repair Honolulu" and the yelp reviews came up for Soho Computer Repair (why hadn't I started here in the first place?) I walked in, John is uber friendly (yes uber is a word...I think) I handed him both laptops and he asked if I wanted to wait around while he repaired them...wait what?! You mean you'll do it on the spot?! Best buy had told me 3 to 5 business days! Geek squad said seven! I couldn't wait however, I had a meeting to go to but promised to return the following day. Sure enough I returned (after a friendly phone call from John saying they were ready the day prior) picked up both laptops which were superbly repaired btw and now I'm home facebooking away on my brand new screen! I came here based only on the yelp reviews. I used to work at a computer repair place and so I have seen first hand some of the mistakes and tricks that computer repair-men usually try to pull. I had a bad virus on my computer and I decided to just have the OS reinstalled. I don't know how to do that without a CD drive so I thought it would be better to have a tech do it. I know that virus removals are the worse things to ask for in computer repair since there is really no guarantee and it is the main thing that customers come back complaining about. So I just went with the un-install and re-install of the OS. John was soooo friendly. I thought it was too good to be true. I told him I needed it before the weekend, giving him only 24 hours to complete the task. He said he would call me by 11:00a.m. the next day. I never thought he would, but he did! He did exactly what he said he would do. The computer is working fine (for what it is...5 year old netbook) and I have recommended him consistently. Thanks John! read more

For some time now, my laptop screen has been "partially" broken. There was two big black stripes on the right side my screen from it being stepped on. I did some research to see about how much this was going to cost me, and where I should go to have it fixed. Soho Computer Repair was at the top of the list for possible options and now I can see why. I called a few days in advance and asked about how much it would cost. The man on the phone quoted me $190, that includes parts and labor. I thought that was pretty reasonable considering I had a pretty big screen and reviews for other shops quoted much higher. I dropped my laptop off on a Saturday at around 2:15pm. I was quoted an hour to an hour and a half for the work to be done. I got a call at 3pm saying my laptop was ready for pickup. I was so surprised that John was able to finish it so quickly. I am very pleased with my new screen and very pleased with the price. If I ever have any other computer problems I will for sure be bringing it to John at Soho Computer Repair. read more

Just wanted to say I got prompt, inexpensive, high quality service here: I was very impressed. My laptop was dead, some electrical short or something, no power, nothing. $20 to investigate, and this led to a repair that only cost an extra 35$!! I read ALL of Yelp's computer repair shop reviews really carefully as i'm low on 'techie' expertise and acknowledge i'm pretty much a fool waiting to be ripped off by the wrong person. In a nut shell, I needed to find some where honest, inexpensive and that offered quality work. John at Soho best fit this profile and i'm so VERY, VERY glad that I chose his store. Straight away John listened to how my laptop sustained damage (I have an 18 month old HP Envy) and did some free basic trouble shooting. He made NO promises, but gave me friendly, honest advice on what he thought the issues might be (where the power cable enters the machine), quoted me for the part & repairs (labor) and at what point he thought I should probably STOP and cut my losses i.e. buy new because it probably wasn't worth the cost of repair V's a new laptop. He also offered to help me recover the old data from my hard drive if needs be. Because of my inexperience, I decided not to rush into costly repairs (about $150) and just check with one more (well rated) Yelp suggested computer store. John was more than happy with my decision cos' I was honest and told him what I was going to do. Of course, I wasted my time driving around Honolulu and should have just stuck with John at Soho in the first place! To cut a long story short, my lap top was indeed not worth repairing for financial reason alone (due to unforeseen damage) and even though John wasn't able to save it, I felt like he guided me very well and charged a REALLY fail price considering what else I was quoted in town Thanks John, I will NOT waste my time going anywhere else again. Spoke to John about upgrading my iMac operating software and memory, I was quoted a great price on parts & labor and brought unit in on a thursday and John said unit should be completed on Sat. but got a call on Friday afternoon w/ John saying computer ready for pick-up. My daughter's $1K Sony computer crashed after she had opened up a malicious email. Searching online for some kind of remedy to her problem, I inexplicably came across the rave reviews for SOHO. I decided to take my daughter's computer for a diagnosis, which would cost only $39 and which would be applied to any approved repair thereafter. The day I brought it in John White called and gave me three options (of varying costs) that would resolve the problem. When I called him back, he informed me of an additional concern that needed to be addressed. I trusted his expertise and I did not feel that I was being manipulated to have more work done than what was necessary (like some auto service shops I've experienced). I told him which option I wanted, and he had the computer fixed by the very next day! On top of fast and efficient service, the final cost was very reasonable and affordable!
