My external hard drive would not boot up. Spoke with John and he said to bring it in and he would take a look. He left it tied to his computer overnight to try to get it to boot up with no luck. He let me know he wasn't able to help me and to come by and pick up my hard drive. I submitted a request for quote to two different computer repair. I spilled water on the outside of my laptop which left it unable to charge. John was the first to respond so I dropped my laptop for diagnosis. After a few days John got back with me to inform me that the motherboard was affected and would need to be replaced. The quoted cost was around $580, which was more than the laptop cost. I decided to get a second diagnosis which proved to be successful as they did the repair at a fraction of the cost at $150. If you need any kind of tech support, see John! He's so kind and helpful. I actually started my journey to recover / save my external hard drive by going to see the Geek Squad. An employee there recommended that I go and see SoHo Computer Repair for better luck / help. As soon as I got to my car, I called SoHo and spoke to John. I ran into a couple of bad computer problems in December and was looking at solutions from buying new computers to looking at repairs. As any senior citizen does, they ask the youngest member of my family for advice, my niece's son who is a computer whiz. ILaptop went in needing a new Hard drive... Screen quality was great. Wanted to upgrade to a SSD. Laptop came back with a SSD but the Screen quality is Terrible now. SOHO blamed it on something else. $260 wasted,should have gone somewhere else. Owner called me and offered to remove the SSD and refund my money which is more than most companies would do. The complaint I have/had is this: 1)Day 1'm told come back in 4 hours it will repaired.I go home and called later "not yet but tomorrow". Lucky I went home instead of waiting. 2) Called in the morning before I went,"Still not ready" Having issues with the Graphics card(AMD)" I said I'll be there next day then. 3)Pick up laptop and display now has shadows on top. Told me it works but could "Crash" sometimes,he put a date for System Restore if front of me on laptop to restore if crashes. I pay and take Laptop,I don't argue with people. Right away laptop crashes multiple times. Blue screen appears temporarily with problems detected then goes to regular screen with AMD driver not detected. My issues is if he ran a test on the system and said your Driver is not working and how much it would to be repaired I could have made the choice to repair or not BUT I was told he doesn't know how to repair.(I would have paid for test of course). I reset the laptop to get it to work(No more Blue screen on Startup)but the driver for the graphics(AMD) is a problem. I don't know if it's built in the motherboard or simply remove and replace. I would have replace the Hard drive myself but I couldn't find a SSD. This would be like taking your car in to get your Air Conditioner repaired and being told on paying it works but sometimes you'll need to turn it on and off when it doesn't to "restart" it because I don't know why it gets warm sometimes. I use to repair Naval ships and if I ever told a Captain the "Water tight door" is water tight sometimes but it's OK he'd throw me off the ship. I'll keep the laptop to use for now since resetting it seems to be working. I could go on about trying to reinstall the AMD driver but that's my problem. All and all he did offer to remove the SSD and refund my money (He called me and left a voice mail) so that's better than most. read more

My almost 2 yr laptop (bought online from Best Buy) started making loud, high-pitched screeches and sounded from time to time like something was grinding. Also it was getting hotter than usual. I took it to the guys at BB, and was told BB needed to take my computer for 3 wks, charge $85 for diagnostics, send it to the mainland for repair, and charge up to $300 to fix it (not including the $85 diagnostics fee). I then took it to John White at SOHO, and he immediately ID'd a problem with the fan. He took my computer for a couple hrs to ID the serial number on the part. Then he texted me to come pick up my laptop while he located the part. He said laptops like mine commonly have problems with the fan. He knew it the second I turned on the computer. About a week or so later, John called to let me know the part had arrived from CA. I brought it in, and he installed the new part that same day, and a couple hours later, I picked it up. $198 for the part, labor, tax - my computer doesn't screech, grind, or burn up any more. During the recent busy holiday season, my laptop crashed. I thought it was the end of the world, as besides my smartphone, it was the only computer in my home. My Samsung Chromebook laptop (which only runs on Chrome OS) screen cracked and I didn't know what to do! There are so many reasons why I bought this laptop; it's affordable, light to carry, and really small. It's super convenient. But when my screen cracked from putting pressure onto my laptop (see my Before and After photos), I nearly exploded. I looked up replaceable screens online but shipping costed way too much, especially since I live in Hawaii (nearly $20!) I then resorted to looking up a computer repair shop in Honolulu. I found Soho Computer Repair, who has an overall rating of 5 stars! 5 STARS!?!? Damn, they must be doing something right. I decided to go check it out during my free time and the first person I see when I enter the shop was John. He was super friendly and nice and funny as well. I told him about my cracked screen and he told me he rarely works with Chromebooks because the software/hardware is rare to work with. He told me normally people who come to his shop would've just bought a new laptop unless they really like their damaged one and still wanted to get it repair (I was one of them lol). Screen repairs normally starts off at $130 or so. He then tried to look around if he had it in stock, and his reaction was hilarious. He was like "WOOOOW wooohooo I actually think I might have it in stock!" And I was super duper happy! He then told me he'd called me back to let me know if he could operate on it and I said yeah sure okay. The total price I paid was $120 when I came in to pick it up. When I looked at it, the screen was different. It was glossy rather than dim/matte looking that I had before but it was no problem for me. I was just happy that my screen was fixed! I have a 27 inch iMac that's about 5 years old and honestly it's mostly used by my kids playing minecraft. But they alerted me that there's a blue screen now and I couldn't access a lot of my sites or update my pictures on iphoto. After consulting Yelp I drove down to Soho which is so convenient on beretania across the street from safeway. I parked on the street and lugged that heavy thing to the 2nd floor. He charges 75$ to diagnose but that is applied to the repair charges. He is very smart and was able to let me know possible problems and gave me possible estimates up front. In a day he called me back and said it wasn't a hardware problem but mostly a software problem. I told him to repair it, it's ready in 2 days! I paid 175$ and it was totally worth it. I don't need to buy a new desktop and it's working like a charm again. He backed up my pictured for me and downloaded the newest software versions. John was very pleasant, professional, and really knows his stuff! I texted him on a Sunday, and I was impressed with his prompt reply. After learning what was wrong with my laptop, and with my laptop being fairly new, he informed me that my laptop is still under warranty; offering me the pros and cons between using his repair service (not free, but obviously faster turn-around time) vs the warranty (free, but turned around time could take weeks). Monday was a holiday, so I went to his office on Tuesday for him to confirm what was wrong with my laptop. He informed me what was wrong with it, and that he needed to order parts that needed replacing. Worried, because my child uses my laptop for his school's virtual learning, John advised that I bring my laptop home and he'll inform me when the part comes in. I was happy with that advice. I paid for the diagnostic fee, plus the price of the part(s) that needed fixing, and the repair; which in total was very much wallet-friendly! He calls me the following Monday to inform me that the parts he ordered had arrived. I let him know that I'll be bringing my laptop the next day. Tuesday, I went back to his office to drop off my laptop. He informs me that it'll take a couple of hours to work on it as soon as he can, and will call me when it's ready for pick up. Wednesday, no call. Thursday, I texted him to follow-up, and he said that it was done and had tried calling me the day before. Sweet! I was able to pick up my laptop with no issues, and that was it! I am currently on my now-fixed laptop, typing up this review with gratitude! I am very much happy that I chose to do business with John. Only thing I would recommend is to maybe leave a voicemail or text as an alternative way when trying to contact a customer when device is ready for pick up. John from SOHO Computer Repair is a breath of fresh air. I found him thru Yelp reviews and recommendations. My 2011-2012 13" MacBook Pro battery died and the boot up and operation of the laptop was sluggishness if not slow. I went in on a Thursday walk in just after opening. John listened to my laptops performance and battery problems. Told him this laptop has all my tax info and files (bad on my lack of backup). Need it back asap. Recommendations included diagnose, backup and reinstall of softwares n data; replace old battery; add 4 Gb to current 4 Gb ram total to 8 Gb; replace original standard 500 Gb HD to a 480 Gb SSD. Estimate completion by Saturday if not Monday latest. Closed on Sunday. I get a call later that Thursday evening from John to say laptop was done and is ready for pickup on Friday. I picked up laptop just over 24 hours of dropping it off. And to top it off, the final tab for parts and labor an amazing $500. Was I amazed? Heck yah!! Very honest and open dialog and feedback from beginning to end. Customer service top notch. Quality and efficiency of service superb. Great bottom line for one like me on a budget. Conclusion: The MacBook Pro laptop now start and boot up in seconds. The Apps open quick. No hesitation. Still have the cd/dvd/ drive. Almost like a new laptop (dare I say like an MacBook Air) for a great price. The service of John and his Tech Team is outstanding. I plan to bring in my old 21" imac for a ram upgrade and possible SSD replacement to boot. This beats the high volume technology stores with a personal touch by a great guy like John. I highly recommend John for your personal computer repair needs. The shop is on 2nd floor of an old building that has no elevator with 2 flight of stairs from street side. My Mac laptop crashed while I was doing my work. As a college student, I always need my computer for any assignments due. I called a various amount of places because I needed my Mac to be immediately repaired. Most places said they are backed up for 2 weeks or would charge me a rush fee of $90+. John is fabulous! No messing around. I already ran diagnostics on my slim iMac. HDD was no good...I knew what I needed and he got me in and out all within 15 min. I had replaced drives before on the iMac with the bezel myself, but the slim iMac requires a heat gun to remove the front screen and is delicate when removing and replacing...much too tight and delicate for my hands that usually can tear down and build up a PC with no problem. He was able to replace a 500gb drive for about $300 (parts and labor included). OS was loaded and everything was clean. He had the kit in stock so only a 1.5 day turnaround. Dropped it off on Saturday 11:00am (Closed on Sunday)...got the call noon on Monday...ready for pickup. AMAZING! Another place wanted $800 for the drive replacement and over a week turn around. Other shops had no idea what I was talking about when I said slim iMac. Super nice and honest guy. His prices seem to be the cheapest when I priced around.
