The price & photos attracted us. Unfortunately, our room smelled like diesel fumes (or home heating oil... Room 316). The heater pipes made fairly loud noises, making it hard to sleep. There's nothing wrong with this place ... it's just ehhh. The rooms was clean, but very small, with no noise insulation and no wiggle room, just like the rest of the recommendations say. It's definitely not a place to go for a romantic getaway, but it's a great place for tourists as it's walking distance to some of the coolest places in NYC - or at least some of MY favorite places! Actually, most of the people staying there were clearly international, so I guess the comparison to a hostel isn't that far off. My real complaints were that it only got half of the TV channels on it's list (no CN is a problem when you have little kids) and that there was no way to use the bath as a bath because the plugging switch had been welded to shower use only. If they recommend a breakfast place, don't take it. The front desk clearly never eats in the area and just reads off a list or gives you a coupon for a place you'll wish you hadn't eaten at. Sunday night on MLK weekend came to $117 with tax for a room with a full sized bed. Very meh. Good for some I guess, but not my thing. read more

We were going to be staying in NYC for the night for a girls weekend. We picked the Sohotel due to location and price. We arrived early after we had confirmed that the hotel was ready for us and the check in took about 40 minutes since they had to take down everyone's names and put them in their guest book- which is a fine practice but then they do not assign those names to the rooms you were given. We had a friend need a room key and she had to show her ID again and tell them the room number because they did not assign the guest names to either of the two rooms we had. The shower pressure was on and off but it stayed hot; they had full bottles of shampoo and conditioner which is rare and was a welcome sight. The rooms are small but you don't need much space in NYC anyway. There is no elevator which was not too terrible since we didn't have a lot of luggage but we had a bellhop assist us in getting to the room. When we returned from being out that night; the ceiling in our bathroom was actively leaking. We put towels on the ground and went down to the front desk wondering if anything could be done. They didn't have much to be able to offer to us so we resigned to stay in the room and hopefully not have the leak get worse. I went down the next morning and spoke with the woman who checked us in; I showed her a video of the leak and the wet, brown towels and she was less than sympathetic. I asked to speak to a manager and had a better experience with her. I was able to get us 30% off the room for us after speaking with the manager. Overall, we had a good experience and would return if in NYC again, the only reason for the 3 stars is what I felt like was a lack of customer service from the front desk staff. It should never take 40 minutes to check in to a hotel room and if a customer asks to speak to a manager that should just be done immediately. The ambiance and the rooms were good and I really enjoyed the furniture around the lobby. We had a wonderful experience with one of the doormen when we were about to venture out in the rain, he provided us with three golf size umbrellas to stay dry! I would recommend that if you are staying here to not have a lot of luggage since the rooms are smaller but adequate for our group and the decor is very fun. read more

Overpriced (over $300 a nt for a room that was so narrow I could touch both walls if I laid down). Incredibly small rooms. Tiny bathroom. Too few outlets and too many light switches. Can walk a few blocks for decent food. Fairly quiet. Front desk acts like they are doing you a favor when they answer a question. Coffee available in morning in small cups without lids - good luck drinking that walking down the street. I won't be returning or recommending this hotel. read more

If you are looking for a bed to sleep in, this is your place. If you expect a bit more from a hotel then my suggestion is to pick something else. There are good and bad things about this hotel. There is NO elevators. The price was a bit too much for what we got. There were 2 beds very small, you had to actually kind walk sideways to get to the other side. Heater were those old looking portable ones. The location was great though. Being surrounded by a lot of places within walking distant to eat. Since we were there for New Years, everywhere else closed except for the asian spots to eat, business was still up and running for them. KATZ deli was a few blocks away! If I didn't have my 2 girls with me then I wouldn't of mind considering the fact that it was New Years but not good for families. Good for travelers/tourists who are just going to use it to sleep and shower. read more

I booked a huge room for a sweet sixteen party of girls which fell through at the last minute and spoke to Alain about not being able to commit to the room and asked for a refund. I'd passed the time limit to cancel and refund by a window of time, and he couldn't refund. but when we hung up I was sent an email informing me of a full refund. Alain was quite professional and ready to listen to what I had to say. After reading reviews i was very hesitant to stay here but was brilliant for the price! Unbelievably comfy beds, very friendly staff (even free wifi and tea and coffee all day). Was very central to Soho but also near the LES. I admit, we purposely chose something basic as we knew we wouldn't spend long in the room but were pleased. Nearly prompted a nervous breakdown.... This was the worst "hotel" experience of my life. So awful I checked in and checked out within 2 hours. The first problem is that this hotel is under MAJOR construction... it's loud and boarded up in places. The first room I was given WREAKED of drying paint. I couldn't even breathe. The 2nd room they gave me had the most DISGUSTING bath tub..... a huge yellow stain took up half the tub. It looked as if no one had washed it in years...or ever. The white comforter also had questionable brown stains. Not to mention the rooms were so loud it sounded as if someone was trying to get into my room every other minute. The staff was moderately helpful however no one could refund me because conveniently there were no managers on duty on a Friday night to assist me. I have emailed repeatedly for a refund... no one has even written me back. I checked into a 4 star hotel down the street for the same nightly rate. This hotel is NOT worth the price. Ok this is a great funky hotel with all you need for a place to stay in NYC- but the Ritz it ain't. Pros; urban funk decor with lacquered black comfy chairs and lots of zebra prints. Quick easy check-in, very nice staff with good customer service. The bed was Soooo comfortable- must have been a pillow top. Love the lavender mint shampoo and shower gel in the bathroom. Room was very clean, flat screen tv was very nice. I loved the lighting over and next to the bed, it was great for reading. They stored my bags for me at no charge. And the price was unbeatable. Very close to Chinatown and Soho, art galleries, restaurants, etc. Free wifi and coffee and tea in the lobby. The bathroom was tiny but nice, all marble, decent shower, and all the necessities. Also quite clean, and included mini toothpaste and lavender body lotion. Rooms were well-insulated and quiet. Cons: the neighborhood is fringe lower east side, you have to walk a few blocks to get to restaurants and shops. There is NO ELEVATOR- so not great if you can't climb stairs. The room was very small- basically just room for a bed, night table, and little desk. There was no phone in the room (but I didn't miss it as I used my cell) and no tub in the bathroom. But when you're visiting NYC you're not really in your room a lot, just to sleep and recharge, so this was perfect. I would stay here again. read more

This place is very affordable by NYC standards. It's cool, artsy, and clean. I've stayed in many, many ultra luxurious NYC Hotels, and payed out the nose to stay in them. This place is almost half the price of those places and you're not giving up very much in the way of convenience and comfort. I've stayed here many times and I've never had a poor experience. Not only is it affordable, but it's clean, old style chic, and have a pleasant staff. The doorman, front desk, and housekeeping have always greeted me with a smile, hello, and answered my questions and needs. In addition, the location is superb. It's nestled conveniently between the SoHo shopping/restaurant district, Little Italy, and Chinatown. So if you don't mind catching a cab or subway to travel up north to the Central Park area, and you're looking to save some money without giving up much luxury, consider staying here. I was almost hesitant to post this because I'd hate to hurt my availability to reserve a room here. Pros: Affordable, clean, super chic, kind staff Con: The only real con is it's lack of valet parking, but there is a parking garage less than a block away that offer a discount if you're staying there. I don't make a habit of writing negative reviews. I like to find something positive to say about everyone. However, I also believe that if someone is paying for a product or service it should be what they expect and pay for. There were some things about my stay at the hotel that made it less than desirable. First of all, there is no elevator in this hotel. I soon found myself walking up to the fourth floor with a heavy bag as the bellhop did not offer to assist with everything. I also overheard the bellhop instructing other female guests to "carry some and [he] would help with the other." The other problem with this arrangement is that the hotel is not suitable for people with disabilities or elderly guests. I did find the rooms to be nicely furnished, however the rugs were faded and curled up at the ends. A major tripping hazard if getting up in the middle of the night or early morning. There also was no microwave or coffee maker in the room. Being a tea drinker I asked one morning for a cup of hot water and was informed over the phone that there was no room service and that coffee was in the main lobby. I explained I don't drink coffee and even brought my own teabags. Somebody did bring me a cup but was a little less than nice when handing it to me at the doorway. I did go to the table later to find they did have hot water amongst the coffee...along with lots of flies buzzing around the dispensers. The most unsettling thing about my stay was financial. I was staying in New York for business and my boss had pre-booked the room on a travel booking site. I checked into the room early and provided my credit card for the traditional hold on incidental fees. I checked my bank statement the next morning to discover they charged my card for the entire balance despite the fact that my boss had already given his credit card information and had funds already removed from his account for payment. This was unlike any other experience we have had with hotels in the past. Together we spoke with at least three different employees at the front desk with no resolve in the situation. Both of our accounts had the funds removed and I ended up signing for the bill at the end with the employee at the front desk guaranteeing that my boss' funds would be returned to his account so he could reimburse me. I would not recommend this hotel for anyone staying in New York City. The service was not warm or welcoming and while the room did look nice, I felt it was lacking with basic functions for a comfortable stay. read more

Our family (three college and high school-aged sons, my husband, and I) really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The room was large enough to accommodate us, and the beds (queen size) were very comfortable. The staff was very friendly and made certain that our needs were met. The hotel was centrally located near China Town and Little Italy, and the subway was easy to access as well. Finally, the price of the room was very reasonable. We will definitely stay there again when we visit NYC again! read more

when i stay in new york, i either stay on someone's floor/in someone's bed in brooklyn, at the mercer, or at the fucking fantastic SOHOTEL. yeah. i know. the mercer and the sohotel are about as opposite as you can get, but that's how i roll. the first time i came here i was actually frightened, but soon realized that everything was clean, like REALLY clean. and there are plastic mattress covers on the beds, which is totally awful and uncomfortable, but i took some comfort in the fact that there was a non porous surface separating me from whatever grotesque shit lives in hotel mattresses. the rooms are totally ugly, the lighting is bad, the best view you can get is a lovely look out onto the bowery, and there are rabbit ears on all of the tvs (including the flat screen tv in the "new" room that i got the last time i was there...something almost endearing about rabbit ears on a flat screen, or maybe it's just endearing that the sohotel actually has a room with a flat screen tv in it...) HOWEVER....this place is fucking CHEAP, and within walking distance to many fantastic bars/restaurants and lots of great shopping. stay here! don't be a snob about how terrible the place looks. realize that you are probably in new york for a weekend to have a good meal, get wasted and probably stumble into bed at an ungodly hour, only to wake up shortly afterwards to shower and go to brunch and have a giant bloody mary. there is no reason why this place shouldn't suffice! read more

Had a night in NY in mind and thought it would be ultimate to have somewhere convenient to crash that wasn't gonna break the piggy bank. Found this lil gem. I aint nev tell no lie, this place did look a tad sketchy walking up to it in the day time lol. However when you walk in it's a cool boutique hotel. The front desk was very friendly and handed me a sweets n a white rose. =) They had em left over from valentines day but hey I'm not complaining, it's the thought that counts! Here comes the funny part. They upgraded my boo and I to one of their largest rooms in the house, which had 3 beds! HAHAHA. Quite the upgrade their huh. Still the extra space was nice cuz their rooms are narrow. The next morning woke up to the sounds of sirens and car alarms, good morning NY! I enjoyed my stay. Although it was sketchy, nothing fancy n seemed out of our way as its literally around the corner from Chinatown n 2 blocks away from the train. I'm incredibly surprised by the negative reviews of this establishment - this place fit the bill for a reasonably priced place to crash in a great area of the city to a tee. Love the style and ambiance of the public areas and the guest rooms, and so did the 9 other girls that were staying here for my friend's bachelorette party. Mind you we were just here to get ready and sleep, but why would you be spending more time than that in your room smack dab in the Lower East Side in the first place? Service from the doormen and the front desk was very pleasant, although I was a little disappointed when they hadn't booked our rooms together even though I'd made that request multiple times over the phone during the reservation process. They did take the time to make some adjustments and in the end we got 2 rooms side by side - If I would have been in a rush it could have been an aggravating process but I waited patiently and was taken care of in ~20 minutes. There was also some somewhat loud maintenance taking place but it was during the day and hey, you gotta do what you gotta do. There was also a small issue where the bathroom light didn't work for a couple of hours in the morning, but these are old buildings and I'm sure if we would have reported it to the front desk they would have sent someone to fix it. For the price, location and quality of this hotel I would definitely stay here again and recommend you do the same! read more

1. The room was really tiny with hardly enough room to walk around the bed. 2. The bed was definitely one of the least comfortable mattresses I've ever slept on. 3. Terrible tv reception so could hardly even watch the news in the morning. 4. They are undergoing construction so be prepared for noise during the day. 5. There is no elevator so be prepared to climb stairs -- 1 flight to reception and then 1-3/4 to your room. 7. Very limited amenities -- I asked for an iron but they didn't have any at the desk so I'm glad I decided to steam my clothes in the shower because I never received one. 8. Management has no sense of customer service. I had a layover and Detroit and after waiting 4 hours (due to delays) for my connection to New York, I found out the airport was shut down and all flights were canceled. I had to stay in Detroit so I called the Sohotel and they said that would be fine. When I paid for the hotel they charged me for one night since I arrived on the 11th and left on the 12th. I checked my credit card statement and they charged me twice. When I called, they said it's because of their cancellation policy and that was that. I think that since this was out of my control, management should have some type of loyalty or sense of service to their customer and not be so unforgiving. read more

Make this your home base -- walk to amazing restaurants in China Town, Little Italy; shop Canal Street, SoHo; and take the subway to the tourist attractions. this place is fine! ok, i ain't no fancy hotel connoisseur, but i read the reviews on here and was prepared for the worst. for the price (compared to everything else in the area) and for the ability to book a room just a few days in advance, i was really surprised. sure the room was tiny, but jesus it's NYC, what do you expect?! it was clean, everything worked, i didn't see any bugs, and best of all the staff was super nice. i put some money in the vending machine, and my drink didn't come out. so i asked the staff about it, he came out, he put his own money in, and two drinks came out. he let me keep both drinks! also they let me use the restroom when i had to go really bad, five hours after i had checked out. i would so go back to soHotel. read more

Great stay here and a great location for walking the lower east side, little italy, soho, etc. Easy subway access. Loved the decor. Also a good italian restaurant (Piacere) in the building and a bar with outdoor seating we enjoyed. read more

I'll just say that I have stayed at hotels across the US and Europe and this is the first negative hotel review I've ever written. We absolutely could not sleep throughout the entire night. Called the front desk (from my cell as the hotel room did not have a phone) and complained- asked for a late checkout and was afforded one hour. The walls seem to be paper thin- we could hear everything that was going on above/under/around us all night long. Loud music began blasting at 7:30 am after the loud banging and other noise started to quiet. Upon checking out the next day, reception did not seem interested at all in the fact that the hotel was so noisy that we couldn't sleep and was simply in a rush to get us checked out for the others checking in on the same day. The neighborhood, also, is not a great one. Not good for walking around- more like Chinatown/Bowery and certainly not Soho or East Village. I'd happily pay more for a hotel in a better neighborhood....and where we could actually sleep (as was our main purpose in a hotel). I would never, ever recommend this hotel or stay here again. read more

4 words "FILTHY LINENS BED BUGS" During a getaway midweek girls stay we chose the Shotel because of it's boutique feel and location. At first blush it was everything we had hoped. However, after night one 2 of the 4 girls woke up with approximately 7 bites down her arm. We did not think too much, until morinng 2 when another girl in the next bed, had bites along her neck and hairline. Upon returing to our unmade room on that day at 4:00 PM, we looked at the linens and almost got sick. Black specks, filthy stains and many long black hairs on one of the beds (we all have blond hair) and black specks on the other bed (we have photos to prove this. The day manager was very apologetic and after a bit of convincing, issued a full refund for the 2 nights we stayed and and one that we were not staying. She gave us garbage bags and told us what we needed to do with our clothing. She explained to us that the room would be fumigated and inspected before selling it to another patron. What a surprize when one of the girls had to run back to the room to get a forgotten item and housekeeping was remaking to room to be turned right over. Upon returning home, it was determened that they issued the credit and then when I left the office must have ripped up the refund!!!!! My credit card shows a cancelled refund for the 3 nights and a new credit for 2!!!! The Genderal manager, Donnett, has been unprofessional to deal with, and will not answer calls from me or any other members in our party. DO NOT STAY HERE. The problems will follow you home. read more

There is not one good thing I can say about this place. The rooms are tiny, the building is old and therefore noisy. It's as if you sleep with the people next room. The bed was old (leaned on one side). The window didn't close well and I had some air coming in (it was freezing cold) + the noise of the street. The pillows were so old and dirty that I first thought it was my pillow cases that were dirty and asked for new ones. But I soon realized the bad smell and the yellow color were coming from the pillows. The hotel is far from everyhting (but that I could have checked better before going). The rates were incredibly high and not competitive at all, I hesitated to change but feared to lose all my money. And last, the complimentary tea and coffee are ridiculous: only lipton tea (no choice, earl grey, darjeeling, green. A minimum!!!) and only coffee (no decaf coffee). I hated it since the beginning and until my sixth night and my departure. I had asked that they wake me up at 4:45 AM and they came 5 min late. Then the taxi they had booked for me was late too. After ten minutes I decided to stop a cab on the street instead of waiting for their limo which was "stuck in traffic" said the manager to me (at 5 AM!!!! I didn't see any traffic of course when I went to the airport with the cab). This place is tiny, expensive, noisy, far away and old. Don't go. read more
