It's easy to miss with such a small storefront but it's on San Pablo directly across the street from REI in Berkeley. This is quickly becoming my favorite taqueria. I've only been here for lunch but I keep coming back. Very tasty and very affordable. They even have a salsa bar along with free chips. I'm a big salsa fan and hate it when I ask for extra salsa at some taquerias and the person looks at me like I just asked for a kidney. A couple good sized tacos with rice and beans is 10.95. The carnitas were flavorful and juicy even though they obviously crisp it up on the plancha prior to serving. Pastor and asada were tasty too. Perfect Mexican rice and the beans are tasty enough to eat an entire bowl on their own. There are lunch specials too. Outside patio with both sun and shade is a huge bonus. I've been here a couple times a month since I first ran across it and it's consistently great. Now I've got to work my way through the other menu items. read more

This place is across the street from the REI store on San Pablo Ave in Berkeley. Nice looking, warm atmosphere inside. I got the chile relleno burrito ($15) - yum! Surprisingly tasty. I am used to vegetarian burritos often being a little bland, I don't know why restaurants don't bother to flavor their vegetarian dishes. But this chile relleno burrito was surprisingly flavorful! Ordered a torta and tacos. Both were piles of cold, inedible mushy slop. The untoasted half loaf of bread for the torta was barely filled with any meat, fell apart immediately and was just a pile of mush. The tortillas for the tacos were those big, cheap white corn tortillas and weren't even cooked all the way. The carne asada in the tacos was gray and sad. The horchata was 100% not made in house and tasted like some pre made crap that was either from a carton or a flavor packet. Don't waste $40+ like I did read more

I ordered a pastor taco and bacon breakfast burrito. The pastor taco was flavorless and the bacon in my burrito was barely cooked. Also all of their sauces are flavorless as well. I'm convinced this place is appealing to people/customers because of all the colors of the restaurant and food. It's a cool vibe but the food needs some work. As kid said upon entry "'Fake mexican' chain across the street, but this is 'the real deal'". Legit spot, with nice murals by local artist, the aguas fresca flowing out front, New Year's Mexican programming on tv. Staff was super friendly, food came out fast, and everything got the stamp of approval from our young tween to my Mexicana mother-in-law. I got a tasty fish taco, Suegra and Hubs got pollo asado tacos, and kid's special was a good sized taco with a hefty helping of beans and rice. Plus tasty churro and Jamaica drink with free refill? All good! We even ordered a burrito to-go. The sign on their wall wasn't lying: "Aqui Se Rompen Las Dietas"/ you gonna "break" that diet for real! Definitely heading back next time we are in the area. My husband and I ate here for the first time and we really enjoyed ourselves. I found the food to be very tasty. I especially liked my fish taco. It was cooked so well, very flavorful, not dry not mushy. They had a little salsa/chip bar and was pleasantly surprised with some fresh fruit. They also had a delicious salsa that I couldn't stop eating. Was nice to eat in the back outside too. Portions were also good. Can't really say anything bad except for that I wish they had soup. tl;dr -- Nice people, quick service, clean location, decent chorizo breakfast burrito at a decent cost. Was browsing Berkeleyside's Nosh and settled on some quick and easy Mexican food from Sol Taqueria. (The location was previously Nuevo Sol, another Mexican restaurant, so maybe new owners?) The website wouldn't let me select chorizo when ordering, so I called in a takeout order for a chorizo breakfast burrito and a small horchata. Was told it would be ready in 5 minutes. I only live a mile and a half away, and the burrito was ready by the time I drove there. The location was clean and I could see a nice patio in the back. The person who took my payment encouraged me to help myself to the salsa bar in the corner. A review from a couple days ago mentioned a small burrito, but mine was a pretty decent size. Not sure if different burritos are different sizes. The complimentary chips weren't the best, but the salsas were nice and the chorizo had decent flavor. Would be fine stopping there again if in the area and wanted some quick and easy Mexican food. read more

Great place! Went with my friend and her partner. I ordered chilaquiles with red and green sauce with carnitas and Jamaica agua fresca. The plate came with rice and beans and pico de gallo. The red chilaquiles had a Smokey bite to them and the green ones were a little bit tart. They have a chip and salsa station with pickled jalepenos, pickled squash relish, limes and radishes. They had the regular tomato based salsa, a green one and a orangey one. The cashier was attentive and continually asked if we needed anything or if the food was good. This new place looks nice, smells clean and has a patio. The guacamole and the chips were both quite nice. I ordered a burrito to go, otherwise I would have tried to get a refund. The burrito was tiny, but with a normal size tortilla, so the already small meal was muchly tortilla. Ok, I've had small burritos for $15 before, so if it tastes good I'm happy, even if I won't be buying it often. Unfortunately the rice and beans were very dry. I couldn't tell if they were undercooked or had been sitting around too long, but they were terrible in texture and devoid of flavor. Please read this and fix these issues. read more

I was very hungry so ordered the chile relleno burrito to be delivered since the site said it is served with rice, beans etc. and the picture depicted a full meal. A burrito was delivered with some chips and 3 salsas. The food was fine and the burrito was a decent size. But it burned to pay $28.12, with tax and all the fees, for something the business advertised but didn't deliver. When I went back to the menu, the picture looks like a chile relleno, not a burrito. Maybe I misunderstood something, but please don't post a picture of one thing to describe another. It feels misleading. Nice people and very clean. Unfortunately what we had was mediocre. Camarones a la Diabla were nearly flavorless and served in an unappealing sauce with the consistency of a crummy sweet and sour sauce. Wife's Carne Asada burrito was more of the same. It was relaxed and lovely in the outdoor area, the staff was friendly and professional and the food was delicious: fresh, cooked perfectly and seasoned beautifully. Salsa was watered down and sour. Stale chips. Canned beans was the straw that broke the camel's back. The steak that I requested for a side for the chilaquiles plate was the slimmest piece of ranchero steak I ever had. Also over cooked. The eggs were off to the side of the plate. They were fried. Far from the chips and toppings of the chilaquiles. Not any cheese either. Mexican dishes are regional and different but they need to step it up to survive in the Gilman neighborhood , the neighborhood isn't known for good food. Mexican food isn't Berkeley's for Tay either. So, I love Mexican food and inherently growing up in southern California and my partner growing up in Mexico we are a bit picky. I was hoping that I could find another good go to spot for Mexican food and it seems that is indeed the case. The space was beautiful and family-friendly. The service was friendly and efficient. But we all know what we really want to talk about... the food. I love Chile Relleno's and they have excellent ones here! My partner got various tacos and the meat was seasoned beautifully. I have to admit, though the absolutely best part of visiting this Taqueria was the salsa bar! I absolutely love salsa and having an open bar where you can get all the various delicious items is always a dream come true. I nearly jumped with Joy to see pickled jalapeños and carrots next to an array of what turned out to be absolutely delicious salsas. They even had limes and melons. Just went to check out the new taqueria in town and was NOT disappointed! Comprehensive menu options at reasonable prices. Staff was very friendly and efficient. Most importantly, the food was super tasty! I had a delicious burrito, fresh warm tortilla chips and several different items from their salsa bar.
