This Beautiful Place is Rapidly becoming one of my favorites...Anywhere! We made a special request for vegetarian nachos that was pretty darn good. The 10 ounce ribeye steak with 6 sautéed shrimp was also decent. The indisputable champion was their custom chocolate and regular flan, that tasted like a combination of delicious flan with cheesecake. It went great with their robust coffee, with a little milk on the side, by request. We will return soon! The owner/tortilla-maker was gracious and highly appreciative. Missing food. Terrible service. No table for anniversary party reservation. Ordered a Mexican Black bean and corn salad. The salad was brought to the table with only a lettuce, onion, tomatoes, and chicken. Literally nothing else on it. I first noticed there were no black beans and notified the waiter. The wait came back and told me they ran out of black beans, they could bring me pinto beans instead. I accepted. I then noticed there was no corn or any type of Mexican cheese which would be typical on a black bean and corn Mexican salad, so I notified the waiter, he said they ran out of corn too but they brought me cheese. I asked the waiter if they could waive the meal since we didn't get nearly at all what we asked for. He said he couldn't but he would go ask the manager, he quickly returned and said he wouldn't be able to waive it period. I then said, may I speak to your manager, because it's obvious the order was not what I ordered, he went back to request the manager, but the manager would not come out. He said that they could refund the plate if I returned the plate to them, this was not acceptable to me since everyone had already received there meals and we had been there for nearly an hour already. Very unfortunate experience since it was my parents 40 year anniversary and I had recommended the location. I will not be coming back, and I will let everyone know how shitty the service is here. Like how the F do you serve a BLACK BEAN AND CORN salad without the BLACK BEANS AND CORN. Literally, any restaurant would have 1. Told me that you didn't have the ingredients before you served it to me so I could make a different choice, or 2. Waive my meal. That's basic service. On another note, we booked a table for 6pm for an anniversary party, we get there and we have to wait 30 minutes. Then they tell us we will have to wait up to an hour, unless we go sit at the bar. Came here for a work lunch. We were a big party and they only had 2 waiters working at the time which extended our service time. There were so many of us and the seats were uncomfortable. Luckily we had a 2 hour lunch instead of 1hour. I got the fish taco lunch plate. It was pretty good but felt it needed more flavor. Poor customer service 9 of us ladies went there to celebrate a bday.. Our waitress was unprofessional and made us feel unwelcome. We had experienced the worst customer service ever, we had to leave before we even ordered anything! The waitress was super rude just because we asked her kindly to add a chair because someone that was coming from out of town was able to make it last minute. She right away raised her voice saying this table was only for 9 she can't add any more chairs bc that'll block the way, she didn't offer any solutions or alternatives, she didn't sound like she cares to help, when we asked ok what do we do she said let me ask the manager. She left and didn't come back to us just to let us know what's going on she was helping her other tables we felt ignored bc we were waiting for a response at least! Another employee was walking by we stopped him to ask to speak to a manager our waitress yeld to him from far away speaking in Spanish, shook her head telling him not to help us! And she told us I'm busy when I finish I'll come to you.. really?! Why didn't she tell us that from the beginning and say I'll be right with you or something more professional. Right there we had to speak to a manager, our problem wasn't that we couldn't add a chair it became the way we were treated. Finally the manager came she wasn't so friendly either she said yes I gave the instructions not to add a chair.. and she said there's a bigger table that might become available soon. I said we're not arguing the rules and we'd fallow your instructions but that wasn't the way to speak to your customers she should've acknowledge us better and let us know that she'll at least try to help, But she didn't. The manager and the waitress started out talking to us aggressively from the beginning like if were fighting or breaking the rules, that wasn't the case, we were just asking kindly. This place is exquisitely fancy. I enjoy the ambiance and the decor, and the food is slightly above average - better than Don Perico, not as good as Nuestros. The staff is very friendly but for some reason there is hardly anyone here whenever I stop in for a meal. I have attended book signings by little known authors with a more lively crowd. This place is dead. Vacant. Empty. The only reason I can think of is the prices. They are a bit high for standard Mexican fare, but I suspect the rent is through the roof. Combined with the extravagant flatware, they have to offset those costs somewhere. read more

If you're looking for authentic Mexican food and food with flavor, then steer clear.... This is 100% a 2 star restaurant but i'm giving 3 stars as service was prompt. We visited at prime dinner time 7pm and the restaurant was almost completely empty with only 10 dining (first sign this wouldn't be great). The ambiance was nice but it felt more like it should be an upscale/middle of the road steakhouse decor than a Mexican restaurant. Chips & Salsa were promptly brought out - the salsa was the only flavorful thing of our entire meal and we only received a small bowl with no offer to refill during our meal. We ordered the chili con queso (very pasty and lacking of any type of taste), carnitas (tender - but bland pork roast served with burnt onions), and a combination dish of chicken enchilada and taco (taco came out burnt and split open while the enchilada wasn't bad but very unflavorful). The only item of our meal that tasted great was the refried beans. Both meals were served with wilted salad mix as a garnish. The price of the food is a joke - extremely overpriced. If you're going to charge $36 an entree at a Mexican restaurant, it better be outstanding. Overall, a very disappointing experience - we will not be back. read more

Dinner on a Sunday and maybe a few tables had people. The welcoming by the hostess was not welcoming, like we were interrupting her doing whatever she was doing with the utensils. The waiter was nice but never saw him again. It took a while to even get our waters. This experience was lack luster. The food wasn't great. The service was slow. We had to waive wait staff down for a refill on our waters and for our check. I came to Sol Y Luna for lunch on a Friday around noon. I was surprised to see it was mostly empty, except for a few employees and one other couple dining. It's been several years since I've tried Sol Y Luna and found the space to be plenty large and patio dining also available. The bar area was also quite large. We all opted for jalapeno-pepino margaritas which hit the spot - perfectly refreshing and with just a hint of spice. You could tell they used fresh cucumbers. They even topped it off with a tamarindo candy straw. Yum! I had the Chile Verde Burrito which was filling and tasty. Often you'll find chile verde that is watered down, not spicy, or just plain doesn't have flavor - but Sol Y Luna has plenty of flavor! I wish it had just a hint more spice, but I'll take it! Service was fantastic - very friendly and kind. I wouldn't hesitate to visit Sol Y Luna again for lunch! read more

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of dining at Sol Y Luna. My Aunt and Uncle had traveled from the central coast to present an award at Shafter High in memory of their recently deceased son. Upon walking through the parking lot, my uncle fell and badly injured his arm and knee. Suddenly, an angel appeared and brought us bandages and wipes and started helping my uncle. Little did we know our angel was the owner of Sol Y Luna. After helping us she ushered us inside to a quiet table where we could sit and regain our composure. Her staff continued assisting us and we were able to enjoy an amazing meal. I cannot say enough about the caring nature of this place and the incredible food. What could have been a terrible experience turned out to be beautiful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I'll be returning often. BTW, the Chili Verdi burrito is off the charts delicious. Enjoyed dinner and drinks with our friends at Sol y Luna last night. My lemon drop martinis were perfect and refreshing. Our waiter Marcos was attentive and efficient. Our husbands loved their spicy micheladas. Sol y Luna is a beautiful place, decor is tasteful and seating is welcoming and comfortable. A great place to lunch with business clients or prospects. While not necessarily classified as authentic Mexican cuisine, the food is a delicious evolution, mixing traditional flavors with new cooking techniques and ingredients. I had the mixed molcajete, shrimp, chicken, steak, peppers, and nopales cooked in a lava stone bowl simmered in a thick spicy red sauce and served sizzling at the table with a delicious chunk of queso fresco, rice, beans, and handmade tortillas. My husband had the chicken enchiladas in red sauce. He said he didn't get quite enough food so he picked off of my plate and I still had leftovers. One drawback was that the first basket of chips and salsa is free but they charge for additional servings. I thought that was unnecessary. The prices in this restaurant are on the higher side and surely they should include unlimited chips and salsa which costs very little. Overall we had a great experience. There are a lot of Mexican restaurants in Bakersfield. This one definitely has more modern decor than many of the others. The interior is very pretty and they have room for large groups. We had a party of almost 20 people and they were able to accommodate us in a private area. With the large party, we were given choices off of pre-selected menu items. I enjoyed the enchiladas rancheras. They had a creamy sauce on them and the meat inside was tender and tasty. I enjoyed that it also came with a scoop of guacamole. The guacamole was very good. Sol y Luna is really good Mexican food. They have an upscale dining experience and good service. This is not your average place. By upscale, I mean very nice decor, very nice flatware, very nice everything, the kind of presentation one expects for expensive restaurants. It IS expensive in my opinion, but it is also obvious they have high overhead in that location. The food though doesn't disappoint, and I absolutely LOVE their salsa and chips. It is just so tasty. I tend to go here with small groups to keep my expenses down, and it is a really great place for business lunches and informal meetings. The place is clean, service very good, food is high quality and fresh, prices a little high, but ambiance classy. Also, would probably be a good date place. Very disappointed in our lunch experience. There wasn't enough wait staff to adequately serve the number of people present. The two servers remained professional in spite of their circumstance. It was 35 minutes sitting at the table before our party of 4 was asked for our drink orders. By that time we decided to go ahead and order our meals so we wouldn't be stuck waiting even longer. We each ordered a lunch special and when served about 20 min later one order was wrong. It took another 10 minutes to correct. Speaking of my own experience, the tostada I ordered could have easily been mistaken for Taco Bell. Very unappetizing in appearance and somewhat watery and tasteless. We were there tonight for Mother's Day Dinner with reservation at 6:30. It went downhill quick. Not only did the table next to us with larger group and apparently relatives of the wait staff get served way before we did, we got our food an hour and a half after we arrived. Yes we got our plates at 8pm. I had to ask for refills on drinks and chips and Salsa. We had a young waiter who I would ask for things that he forgot, like kids menu for my grand daughter, drinks, silverware, and he never came back out with them. I had to chase the bus boy for it. I at one point looked over to see my grand daughter scooping the rice with her hand because her silverware had not been brought. My brother ordered a medium rare steak and got an overcooked tasteless steak. I ordered carnitas and I have never had such dry tasteless carnitas. The beans had no salt. This was not Mexican Cuisine. They knew they did us wrong and didn't offer any form of apology or discount. I do not recommend you go here. Save your money and time. Go somewhere else. read more

The service is poor, would take forever to get drinks or seen, you could get food for half the price that tastes way better at a Mexican taco truck. Really good food, but a super long wait. Either way, it didn't make me think to never come again. While we waited for over 2 hours, we get fresh tortillas with chips and salsa and the same sweet lady brought my son rice and beans. There was one guy that took our drink order, then was the bartender (for every table), and even finished things up. I'm thinking this is what caused the major delay. Any way, back to the food. If you want a delicious shredded chicken taco that is full of flavor and not dry at all, this is it! I got one hard shell and one soft. Both were so good. This is another review that was in my drafts that I forgot to post. This review should be updated once I try this place again. I was going to, but when I went a couple of times they were closed during COVID. The time that I did go I made reservations and we got in within 10 minutes of arriving on time. The staff was very polite and attentive from the host to the servers. Everyone seemed very well trained and professional. I would easily give this place a 5 star rating based on service alone and atmosphere. The food was forgettable and came out cold. The chips and Salsa were not my favorite and the guacamole was bland. My plate came out cold and my wife's was piping hot. They were going to remake my plate because the cook somehow forgot to make my wife order. So the server informed me of the delay and said that the cook was going to remake mine while my wife's food was being made for the first time. That way I wasn't served 10 minutes before my wife, and my food would be fresh when my wife's food was ready. It looks like the cook decided not to remake it, or even keep it warm. My cheese Enchiladas were ice cold and the cheese was not melted at all, it just started to clump up. Based on the food I should give this place a 2 or 3, but the ambiance and staff really made this place great. Also, in time of COVID, we are asked to be a little more forgiving. read more

I would not say this place is Mexican good. The food is very generic and not fresh. I ordered costillas in red chile sauce. Was excited to eat this and when I got the dish, the costillas tasted like they were cooked 3 days prior. I don't think I'll go back. I have gone to Sol y Luna for years. It has always been on the pricey side but for the most part the quality is good. I went on July 1st with a large party and we were told that the first basket of chips is free and would have to pay for any additional baskets. I have never heard of a Mexican restaurant limiting the chips. That is one of the cheapest things you can offer. I hate the fact that they are price gouging. All of their prices have already gone up since covid and now they are charging for chips. When asked why, they made some lame excuse about wasting. Why not just provide extra chips to tables that ask for it instead of just refilling everyone's basket. I was a proud patron but not anymore. read more

The furniture (tables, chairs) is beautiful; the bar is nice and the location of the restaurant is nice too. The waiters were also very nice and helpful. The bar looks great, so many drinks to choose from on the drink menu, beers wine and spirits. They also have a few drinks for entertainment that includes fire (very cool). The bar is in a separate room; I think it's definitely a cool place to grab a drink with friends or even as part of a special occasion/celebration. The food....... Well, if you get a steak don't expect it to look like a steakhouse steak, it's very thin, and like Denny's quality. Honestly I felt like the food looked better than it tasted; not saying it was horrible but the flavor wasn't there at all, at least not on my plate. I sent my first plate back because they didn't give me what I asked for, when it came back it was better, but the beans were still the tastiest thing I ate besides the pico de gallo and chips I had before my 1st plate came.
