Came in for a birthday dinner on a Wednesday night and got a little nervous when we saw how empty the restaurant was. But boy were we surprised! Beautiful restaurant with lazy Susan's and raised tables to share food and an amazing array of tapas. We had the ahi tuna, quesabirria, flautas, chicken chilaquiles and the mint chicken skewers. For me the quesabirria was a stand out, but the rest of our party loved the flautas. Started with the queso and they were able to accommodate leaving our chorizo. The servers were very fun and even offered us the choice of a tequila shot or churros for a birthday treat! Choose the churros this time and they were spectacular, filled with a Dulce de leche. This was my first time at Sol Y Luna, and overall it was pretty good. The Cantina Margarita was a well-made classic margarita and the queso dip was great. Our favorite thing we ate was the duck empanadas, they're a must try! The quesabirria was decent, but we would probably try something else next time. The chicken skewers were also good. The only thing I wish was different was the timing of the food coming out. From the time we were seated to the time we left, we spent 34 minutes inside the restaurant. It did feel like we were rushed out, which was interesting when we had made a reservation and the restaurant wasn't busy. Overall though, Sol Y Luna is yummy and a cute place, so we'll give it a try again. read more

Sol y Luna is always a restaurant I pick during Birmingham Restaurant Week. Today, I'm trying the Gin Colada, which has London dry gin, coconut puree , pineapple juice, cranberry juice, and orange bitters. For my first course, I chose the Sol y Luna Sampler, second course Puntas Puerco, and for dessert churros. They were a little busy, so the service was a little slow because they had a tequila tasting event going on. I will have to look into that next time, and it was Bham restaurant week. read more

I haven't been to Sol Y Luna since it reopened and took some friends there today for brunch, remembering how much I used to love it in its Southside location. The interior is really lovely. The bathrooms were very clean. Our server was kind and very apologetic. And that's what gives this place two stars. We only stayed for appetizers, since it seemed like the kitchen was having serious timing issues, though only three tables were seated in the whole restaurant. The guacamole came with a variety of tasty chips, but the guac itself was bland and completely smooth. There is no way to get that consistency in the molcajete in which it was served. The queso was a total miss. It tasted like and had the exact texture of Tostito's queso blanco dip, artificial and bland. Furthering my suspicions there, it also came out of the kitchen at room temperature. It didn't even approach warm. Sadly, we won't be back. Luckily, there are tons of great choices around that area, and we were able to salvage brunch elsewhere. read more

We walked over to Sol Y Luna only to see they were closed. Once we took a seat to figure out another place to eat, we saw they would open at 5:00 pm and only had a short wait for them to open the doors. Once in, we were given the option of indoor or outdoor and chose outdoor. We decided on Puntas de Puerco and Tomatillo Lobster Soft Taco. I went with the Puntas De Puerco after I glanced at a review. The pork tenderloin was cooked well with a sweetness and the grits with the syrup and Chihuahua cheese was good but could have used a few more pinches of salt. My friend decided on the Tomatillo Lobster Soft Taco because of a previous experience at the old location of Sol Y Luna, good to him but not as good in comparison to other experiences.  We also decided on the Tequila Sampler, bartender's choice and the El Matadoor Margarita, delicious!!! Service was great; food was meh but mostly due to it tasting stale as in case of the chips, and not hot or fresh in the case of fries and entrees. We tried it for restaurant week and servings were on small side. Decor was nice. I thought it made a good date place, especially near Botanical Gardens for a stroll after the meal. I have been wanting to try this place for so long, and I finally got to try it with friends last week. We came right when it opened at 5:00pm for an early dinner. I loved the aesthetics of this place, it was just so beautiful. Since it was early we were the only ones here for a while. Our waitress was super friendly, attentive to our needs, and able to answer our questions. The three of us decided on sharing an appetizer and three tapas. We got the Sol Y Luna sampler. WOW! Their was a lot of guacamole, but I will say the plantain chips, vinegar potato, and sweet potato chips stole the show for me. I don't know if I can go back regular tortilla chips again. It was well worth $10. We loved it! I love how we could share our entrees/tapas and highly recommend it if you want to try several things here. They even brought out our entrees/tapas on a large plate where we could serve ourselves. We ordered the shredded beef flautas, puntas de puerco, and the chicken chilaquiles. I couldn't even pick a favorite of those, they were all so mouthwatering! I went in knewing I would like the puntas de puerco since it would be served atop cheese grits, and the pictures looked amazing. They did not disappoint! I also went in knewing the chicken chilaquiles looked good, and they definitely were too! The shredded beef flautas wasn't really something I would order on my own, but more a collective decision by my friends so we could have three entrees. It actually was pretty tasty! Very crisp! Overall, this was a wonderful experience, and dare I say this is officially my favorite Mexican restaurant now! It's such a nice change from the greasy hole in the wall Mexican restaurants everyone raves about. Give this girl some fresh flavors and out of the box menu items instead please! Good job Sol Y Luna! I really loved my visit to Sol y Luna. I found parking right out front of the building. I was shocked, as this area can be a bit tricky with parking. We got there at 11:30 and I feel like there was still plenty of parking left for ample parking. I met some friends here for lunch. I will say that this restaurant has taken proper precautions for dine in. They limit the capacity, provide hand sanitizer and they also require masks. I do like the clear partitions between the tables. They are there for protection, but they do not take away from the decor. They also do not get in the way of the tables. So, I think that they are perfectly placed. I absolutely love the atmosphere of the place. It is casual and relaxing. I also enjoyed my food. We had queso dip and chips to start. We opted to get the queso without the chorizo. However, I do plan to try this the next time. I had the Puntas de Puerco. It was amazing!!! The pork tenderloin was so tender and it was seasoned so well. The pork tenderloin was also on top of cheese grits and the grits were so good. There was some sort of syrup also on the dish and it was that extra spunk that makes this dish easily one of my favorites. One of my other lunch buddies had the Chile En Nogada. It was a poblano pepper and it was stuffed with ground beef. I plan to try this dish the next time that I visit. The staff was very helpful and attentive. My husband treated me to a mid-week date night a few days ago. We had never been to this restaurant, but we know one of the owners so we decided to finally check it out. We were able to find a parking spot in front of the restaurant, which was great because this area of Mountain Brook doesn't always have a readily available parking spot. As we walked up, we noticed signs reminding people to wear a mask if they were going to enter the restaurant. Also, social distancing was enforced. We wanted to enjoy the nice Fall weather so we sat outside. Our waitress was friendly and gave us suggestions since it was our first visit. I recently had braces installed so I chose the crab enchiladas since it was a softer texture. My husband ordered the duck empanadas. We shared an appetizer of queso dip with chorizo. My new favorite spot. I first tried sol Y Lina for restaurant week and have found myself coming back since. The food is great and so are the drinks. I've enjoyed each drink that I've had and would suggest going with the pear cactus margarita or the cucumber mojito. For an entree I would suggest the pork with grits if you don't like seafood. If you are a seafood lover, you can't go wrong with the lobster soft taco or the salmon. I would also highly recommend the queso with chorizo. It's a small restaurant so expect a wait if you go on the weekend. read more

We ordered for app the queso dip with chorizo dip. It was good but needed way more chorizo for it to be a true chorizo cheese dip, in my opinion. The chorizo was sprinkled on top like a decoration. For dinner I ordered the crabmeat enchilada. The flavor was wonderful. For dessert I ordered the coffee with khalua and crepas de cajeta con platanos. The dessert was topped with candied walnuts. Everything was so warm and paired well together. I tried many drinks and they all looked really pretty but unfortunately I did not taste much alcohol. My favorite drink was the sol y luna margarita and I asked them to make it extra spicy. I went with some friends and pretty much tried everyone's dish and I will say everything tasted really good especially the dish with the shrimp swimming in olive oil and garlic. Wow. read more

I was excited to try this place and I hate to say I was disappointed. I ordered the Chile En Noga. The menu states it has ground beef in it but I should have brought a magnifying glass to find the beef. It was full of raisins and way too sweet. We also ordered the chicken skewers which was better than the Chile but okay. It looked pretty but nothing outstanding about it. The margarita was suppose to be spicy which was not the case at all. They did a really good job decorating the place, it's absolutely beautiful. From the Edison lightbulbs at the bar to the beautiful chihuly-like lamp in the corner to the string lights on the ceiling, the place is absolutely gorgeous inside. We came here on a Friday night in their first few weeks of being open. The restaurant was pretty packed, we put our name on the list for 2 and were informed that the wait would be about an hour. Their bar was packed to the brim as well. Luckily the habitat feed and social bar at the grand bohemian was next door, so we grabbed some drinks there while waiting and didn't even notice the hour pass by. The food: Queso dip with chorizo and chips This was fantastic. Just a great queso sauce, with some flavorful beef in the middle. At $8, they gave a very reasonable portion size. Chicken chilaques I found this dish to be glorified chicken nachos. It wasn't quite clear from the description what it was going to be. The chicken itself was good, not dry like shredded chicken at most places. The dish beans, sour cream, chips, avocados, cilantro, cheese, roasted Serrano-tomatillo sauce. This dish really lacked flavor. It was a ton of cheese melted all in one thick layer, and the sauce wasn't particularly flavorful or there wasn't enough of it. The dish had no spiciness either. Price is great for the portion size, but just not worth it due to lack of flavor. -1 Star. I'm a bit confused as to why this dish and the flautas, both big portion sizes, were under the label "tapas". Not complaining about the portion sizes, please keep that, but doesn't "tapas" translate to "small portion"? Just a strange heading on the menu. Shredded beef flautas I really enjoyed trying this dish. The meat inside the flautas was very flavorful and had a nice sauce. Great dish, and very reasonable at $11. Churros Bunuelos with dulce de leche ice cream and chocolate syrup Essentially this is a fried dough fritter in a beautiful shape on top of 3 big scoops of vanilla ice cream. They could work a bit on presentation of this dish (see picture), but the shape of the bunuelos was already very cool. And the generous portion of ice cream was fantastic, will absolutely make any ice cream lovers day. Service: Everybody from the greeter to the waitress to the bus boy was incredibly professional and efficient. Service is where this place shines, and I hope they continue to hold on to their fantastic staff. The place is beautiful. When you enter there's this beautiful mural in your right very selfie worthy I just forgot to take one on my way out. There's also this beautiful space in the back... definitely fit for a fun time with a group or a cool date night. I enjoyed the drink their famous for in a prickly pear version, delicious!! I also had the triple taco( steak, shrimp and fish) I was not a fan of the fish didn't seem freshly cooked. Hubby had the Keri bowl with chicken and he loved it he stated it was very fresh and crunchy.Oh my goodness the staff !!! I should have lead with that, they are amazing. Friendly and attentive.
