The owners & employees of this salon are really nice, welcoming, & pleasant, but unfortunately the quality of work done on my nails was pretty disappointing. I came for a gel manicure application & removal. For some personal background context, I've been hesitant about getting gel because I didnt want to thin out my nails like how I have in the past. Gel mani was $40. 1. Gel removal - As I was picking out my nail color, the employee started sanding down my nails with an electrical handheld buffing device (awesome multitasking, but I quickly learned this was not the ideal method. I told her my concern about my nails becoming thin & I asked about the safest way to remove gel. She proceeded to tell me that sanding down the nails was safe & much quicker than soaking nails. When she was done, I clearly saw how my nails were evenly sanded down :( 2. Gel polish - the gel polish application was fine, not much complaint here. The employee was very careful & diligent with the application. 3. Retainment - in just a couple days, I noticed the corners of my gel starting to lift, but what really upset me the most was how bendy my nails were bc they were so thin. In just 4 days, my nails started to break & this was my biggest concern. I'm pretty sad that now I probably have to care for my nails to grow strong. Now I'm skeptical about getting gel on my nails until I find a reliable, trusting salon. I recently decided to treat myself to a gel manicure and regular pedicure on a monthly basis. Sol Y Luna is walking distance from my home, so I thought I'd give this place a try. Per their website, they only do nails Wednesday through Sunday, so I sent a text for a Wednesday appointment. Apparently, they no longer do nails on Wednesdays, so they convinced me to come in for an appointment that evening instead. I shuffled my schedule around so I could make it in for the gel manicure and classic pedicure ($65). I came in with the salon completely empty and three employees sitting around. As I was selecting my colors, I showed one of the staff a simple design I wanted: just two simple brush strokes across the nail. All of a sudden, all three staff members swarmed around me. One of them started telling me that, oh no, they don't do design there. She claimed that only salons that do acrylics do design (not true) and that it's only so they can squeeze more money out of me (paying a little extra was not an issue for me). She went on and on about this. Then, she said she probably COULD do it, but she doesn't have time! She has so many customers to tend to! Again, the salon was completely empty except for myself and the staff. The entire "lecture" was uncomfortable and I was spoken to as if I were a child. Not wanting to argue, and since I was already there, I chose a simple pink for my manicure and a burgundy/chocolate color for my pedicure. The lady began working on my nails, sanding down the existing gel manicure I had (which was beautifully done overseas). The gel application process was lengthy, which made it seem as if she was being extra detailed and thorough. Unfortunately, the end result was a lumpy, uneven application. My pinky was also cut. The pedicure, in the meantime, consisted of lukewarm water. I asked the nail technician to not cut down my toenails too much as it's really uncomfortable when wearing closed-toe shoes. He cut down my nails as short as they can possibly go AND my big toe was extremely uneven. The lady who had lectured me took over after that and she tried cutting it down further to even it out, which was extremely painful so I told her to stop and leave it. She took her time painting my toes with three coats of polish. Before I could even move out of my chair when instructed, the polish smudged. It was closing time, so I was worried they'd try to send me home with the ruined polish. Instead, after some thinking, she said they'd have to start all over and quickly removed the polish, and convinced me to get gel on my toes, too, at no extra charge. I wanted a similar dark color, but she insisted I just get the pink used on my hands so it would take less coats and I'd be done faster. Wanting to go home, I agreed. The gel application on my toes ended up looking much better than on my hands. I paid, tipped, and left. Just days later, the manicure started to lift on the sides of my nails. As my nails started growing out, the lumpy application was more obvious. Finally, a week and a half later, a huge chunk of gel polish has lifted and broken off of my nail. I'm not rough on my hands and have had regular manicures last longer than this. My experience at Sol Y Luna was poor and I would not go back. Took my boyfriend and I to get a sugar waxing for the first time for him and the first time for me in 4 years of having a sugaring hair removal session. Firstly I will say that the salon and staff itself are lovely. The sugaring / waxing service itself is done inside of a clean room that's inside the nail salon itself. All of the staff are kind, friendly, and lovely people including the woman who did my sugaring. HOWEVER. The sugaring/waxing service itself was far below acceptable. Firstly I've had sugaring done multiple times in different countries over the course of 3 years (Canada, Australia, UK, and the US) and have never heard of a sugaring session where wax is used intermittently in-between--. The woman who did my and my boyfriend's sugar/wax was very nice and friendly however also quite pushy on the idea of getting the hair removal job done to perfection with no awareness of how the client might be doing in the process and whether to choose wisely on putting someone through a horrible painful experience or "getting the job done right and completely hairless" to get paid / maintain a good review. My partner ,who went first, came out with a very different energy of frustration and pain than when he went him. At first I assumed that it was the normal "first time - I don't know what to make of this experience for me". I later found that his skin at the base of his pubic mound meeting his genitalia had been ripped and a small piece of skin hung from the tear made from the method of wax being used instead of the requested sugar only. Also my partner had requested to not have his testicles waxed and the service was still performed anyway which left rash on his testicular skin and inflammation in that area. I think if your customer is bawling on your table from pain of you using a wax that was specifically asked multiple times not to be used would be enough red flag for you to choose to stop the service and comprise on the final price (like full refund or 50% discount for a discontinued service due to causing the customer pain and skin tearing) My partner and I have a pretty high pain tolerance (we have tattoos) and had specifically asked to only have sugar used on us both. I had especially emphasized that only sugar be used on my vagina as my skin is sensitive to wax and my skin will break easily if used (which happened as a result of her dismissing my repeated request) I had also consented and reassured the woman before we started that I am satisfied with the paying the full rate even if final result maybe not being 100% hairless to avoid any skin damage and unnecessary pain as both my partner (first time hair removal customer and myself - long time returning hair removal customer) couldn't get all the hair off our private areas with the sugaring paste only. We completely ok with this. HOWEVER Both our sessions with the request for sugar was completely ignored. As my session carried on wax was introduced to the inner sensitive parts of my vagina and resulted in me being inflamed from the wax, on top of which broken skin and me bawling from the repetitive pain and poor customer service often specifically request being ignored. I had to end the session early from being in so much pain and crying from the technique used with using intermittent wax instead of the complete service being sugar wax. After having to make my stance on not finishing the wax service very clear, i put my clothes on to meet my partner in the lobby who knew exactly the pain I had just felt & vice versa. We paid and even tipped her as the county of SF will be going into severe shutdown tonight onwards and we didn't want to leave her empty handed and because she genuinely was very nice just poor professionalism in being aware and accommodating of the client's discomfort and boundaries, we will not be returning for this service here again. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SUGARING HAIR REMOVAL ONLY PLEASE CHOOSE A DIFFERENT SERVICE PROVIDER THAT SPECIALIZES IN SUGAR HAIR REMOVAL ONLY. I was heavily disappointed in this experience afterwards and even more so for my partner as it was his first time and now has a small tear & severe inflammation on his genitalia as a result. As far as the rest of the salon goes, it truly is a lovely salon. Clean, affordable rates on services and very friendly staff. Would probably go back for a mani/pedi but never again for a hair removal service. This experience had us seek laser hair removal as a permanent hair removal solution. This week I was at the salon and everyone was super friendly beautiful relaxing salon. Sat in the chair for my pedicure & the manicurist barely spoke to me. She did a superficial cleaning, filing, pumice and gel on my toenails. She only put a drop of oil on the cuticles, and that was it. No lotion or massage. The gel manicure was done dry no presoaking only cuticle lotion& had me wash my hands in the pedicure bowl. Just a dab of oil on the cuticles and was charged $65. The experience wasn't anything special and very disappointing. I went to this salon because of the rave reviews, but that was not the case. Oh they recycle the green basin which they say is disposable after each pedicure. I won't be going back. read more

Allison is great in doing Brazilians. She is clean and quick. That's why I keep on coming back here. The only issue I have is the inconsistent pricing. Allison likes using a combination of sugar and hard wax based on the types/thickness of hair (which is good! It makes the process faster and cleaner) but their pricing for "sugaring" is different from "waxing" and I'm just confused about when they charge for one or the other. There was a time that I paid ~$50 with a card and it would have been ~$40 if I paid in cash. Also, hair was forest level, so okay. But this time, they charged me $50 which, they told me, would have been $60 with a card. I mean, it's not really much of a big deal but I would appreciate some consistency most especially when she decides on what type of wax to use on me. But other than that, all is good. read more

She's been practicing hair removal since she was a teenager and her experience shows that practice makes perfect. On a late Sunday afternoon, I decided that I simply must get my lady bits waxed. My usual lady, Sandy on Irving, wasn't picking up her calls and well, desperate times calls for desperate measures. I walked in and Allison and her partner(husband?) treated me like a long time customer. I'm only been in the salon for a minute and both of them knew my name. To say that Allison is a sugaring goddess (from the previous reviews) is an understatement. That woman waxed, threaded and sugared like no other. In case you're a newb, quite like me yesterday, sugar is a lot like wax. Instead of using strips, sugaring uses a glob of sugar paste. The hair is pulled in the direction of the hair growth rather than against, making it 10x less painful. In the end, your skin is left soft and smooth. The cost of sugaring is a little higher than my usual Brazillian waxes but this is a price that I'm willing to pay. I have been to this spa several times in the past 2 years as i live really close by. The only reason i keep going back is for Dawn. She is the best employee in this spa and the only reason i go back. If my review were solely for Dawn, it would be 5 stars. She only works there Thurs and Fri and so those are the days that I go. I have gotten waxed and mani/pedi's from her and am very happy. She is good at what she does, patient and really thorough. I got a waxing job by Alison once and hated it. She was too rough and impatient. Waxing is tormenting enough. She is better at mani/pedi. As for Henry - He spoils the whole spa experience. He asks personal questions in front of other customers and has useless comments about everything. I also dont trust him. I usually dont question the bill but today I felt i was overcharged and since they dont provide an itemized bill i had no idea how much everything cost. When i asked to see their pricing, he told me to look it up on thr website. That is just how he talks...rude. Anyways i added everything up when i got home and i was overcharged. He was accommodating when i called him on the phone and said he would reimburse me....but was not apologetic or anything. SO overall this spa is okay, just make sure you know how much things cost if you are going in for more than just a mani/pedi. And if you can go on Thurs or Fri -- get Dawn, you wont be disappointed. UPDATE: Updating my review to a one star from a 3star for a really poor customer experience. I went in this morning to collect my refund and Henry asks me to talk to him in 'private' -- he confronts me about this yelp review saying his boss yelled at him and that it's not his fault. He blamed Dawn for not telling him what i got done, but i heard her tell him accurately and i heard him repeat what i got like 2x before he overcharged me. TL;DR: They will give up your appointment time to someone else and not let you know I called to ask if they had availability for 2 people for facials, and they said we can come in. It'll be one after another though since they only have one room and I said that's fine, I can get a mani-pedi while my boyfriend goes first. They asked what time I can come in and I said 5:30 since my boyfriend and I were getting food. She asked if we could come at 5 and I said we will try. She says great, we will see you guys at 5:30 for 2 facials! We get our food across town, drive 20 minutes to get to this place, arrive earlier than the expected 5:30pm at 5:10pm instead. The owner was super super nice. Really wanted to like this place due to excellent reviews. But just too many downsides and at the end of the day "nice" doesn't translate to quality. Where the experience fell short: - we two were the only people there, nobody was rushed or short handed. -perhaps it's just us, but I feel nail & massage salon should be a relaxing place. Instead the chairs were focused at a TV set, which was loudly blaring celebrity glitz reality schlock entertainment TV. Extremely agitating. It never stopped. I would have asked the owner to change the TV, but he seemed really, really into it and commented constantly. - again, he was very nice - and talkative - but I don't really want to make small talk for an hour & while a TV is also blaring at me. Suggestion - remove the TV, or put on some beautiful, calming nature scenery; have some gentle music playing in the background if any. New age, jazz, whatever. - they cut the edge of my fingernails flat, and yet too close/into the quick. As a man, this is not what I'm going for. I ended up clipping the sides at home. - the clear polish they put on my fingernails peeled off within hours & now looks like crap. - cut one of my toes on pedicure, causing it to bleed. It still stings. - they only scrubbed my right foot. Left foot still rough. They just...forgot? - whatever lotion they applied at the end to my ankles & wrists caused all of my hair follicles to sting. So, had to take a shower & have a beer to take the edge off. -as for my GF: they didn't clean under her fingernails, she had to ask that it be done when she realized toward the end it was otherwise just going to be overlooked. - they didn't apply a top coat to her polish. Let's see how long it lasts. -I asked if the chairs have massagers (they do not). Was told that massage functionality would "shake us around too much for the workers to work on our nails". Which is complete BS because every other nail salon I've been to has built in chair massagers - and it's actually something we kind of look forward to when we stop down & pay for a mani pedi. So, minus one star just for BS'ing me. Overall: what should have been a quality relaxing experience was instead agitating, incomplete and of mediocre quality. With prices set commensurate with every other salon in the area ($35 each mani pedi + tip), there are so many other options I unfortunately cannot see us returning. read more

I came to Alison because I needed a Brazilian wax for my Vegas trip for Halloween. Hands down, I think she's the best when it comes to waxing. Not only is Alison really fast and great at what she does, she makes you feel comfortable with ZERO awkwardness lol. Within the 8-10 minute session that we had, she jumped right in and got the job done quickly by making me feel at ease. Normally, when I get my waxes done at other places, I'd feel this awkward tension because you're revealing yourself to a stranger. I did not get that feeling with Alison at all because she was super friendly and funny-- that really lowered my guard. My boss treated me to a signature mani/pedi here. + Parking was pretty easy. You can find it on the side streets around the block. I did call ahead to let them know I'd be late since I was stuck in traffic. The woman on the phone didn't sound very friendly initially. When I walked in, I stood there for a while not sure of where to go after I had picked the color I wanted. But this all changed once I asked the woman about kids. Her entire persona changed and you could tell there was a whole other side to her. Overall the quality of the work was fantastic. I can't help looking at my nails, and I am a girl who never gets her nails did (playing sports and instruments ya know). What they could improve on: + i was not offered any beverages and when they did 15 minutes later, I felt like it was wrong of me to get some so I declined. + The place is lacking for some music in the background. I felt like the guy there was just talking to fill the silence, but silence can be golden sometimes. + The guy in charge was overly friendly and had a slight creep factor. I don't do well with creeps, so I had a hard time making eye contact and extending the conversation. I was SO happy when another man came in to get his nails done. This is embarrassing for me to write for all of yelp to read but I just have to let everyone know I went in to get a Brazilian wax but I decided to get the sugaring done instead of wax and it was the best choice! I am going to recommend this place to everyone and I am going to be a repeat customer! My first time here and I will definitely go back. My friend referred me to go to Allison at Sol Y Luna to get a broken capillary removed. It's been bugging me for a year! This was my first time ever getting anything done so while I was there I decided to get a mole removed on my shoulder too. I hate driving around so I thought I'd get it over with. OMG, Damn it hurts! It feels like getting shocked. She kept reminded my that with all beauty procedures comes some pain. Which is true. Gosh, my eyes were tearing but she was totally cool and talked me through it. It's been 2 weeks and teh scabs are gone and my skin is healing beautifully. I don't see my broken capillary anymore (THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU), and my mole has reduced significantly. It was pretty big so she said it may take another treatment or 2. I am definitely going to go back to finish it up. Btw, Allison's skin is the best skin I've ever seen. Anyone who considers facials or work done should look at the owner or the person who does facials. If their skin doesn't look great you should avoid it. That's always been my rule of thumb. Her cost are extremely reasonable and she is just a cool chic. This was a great referral and I highly recommend coming here. But be careful. It hurts but the results are worth it. read more

The man that operates this place is way too pushy into asking personal questions , I believe it's his wife that was works there too , but both can be very rude to the other lady that works there. After having my facial done, I felt as though my face was on fire , the next day my face felt very tight and started to peel. Went back a couple weeks later to give them another chance but the man really drove me away , I'm here trying to relax with a mani/pedi, I don't need you to sit next to me and ask me my life story , I don't know you! New neighborhood business, so wanted to give it a try. The Spa is new, clean and nicely decorated with a large full screen TV - relaxing chairs. I had a manicure - nice. The women who greeted me was helpful and warm. I decided to go back and try a Massage. Bad mistake! It was clear immediately that the women had absolutely no training. There are basics in massage decency (where the towel goes), etc that were not followed. The strokes were rough and pretty much nonexistent. Though 60.00 / hr is a good price, it's not a good enough for an inexperienced masseuse. There's nothing worse then a bad massage. read more
