If you want to try something weird try the soda freeze that's any soda with soft serve put in a machine to make a slushie thing, it's odd but good. I just got the plain vanilla, but had it dipped in the butterscotch shell because I was feeling nostalgic for the dipped cones I had as a child. The woman helping us was patient while we made up our minds. I needed napkins as it started dripping immediately, even through the thick coating. We sat at the tables outside and ate our cones. The butterscotch tasted ok but it was really thick and waxy so I didn't finish it. If I were in the area i might come back and get ice cream or soft serve again but skip the dip. read more

This was just ok, definitely not my favorite ice cream. Or even my favorite ice cream the day that we went, because I had been to a Baskin Robbins earlier in the day. Small amount of flavor choices for regular ice cream. I got Rocky Road, one of my favorites. Their RR was pale brown in color, when I prefer darker chocolate. The ice cream also started dripping almost immediately, even though it was a slightly chilly night. So it was definitely a lighter texture, or kept at a higher temperature. They also only had cake cones, not my favorite. I definitely prefer sugar cones, or waffle cones if I'm splurging. The employee working was nice enough, nothing to complain about there. It is about eight dollars per bowl and they do have a lot of other varieties like soft, serve toppings they have cookies but again it is a little bit pricier because of location and I would say that the flavor is on point. Solana Frosty was a bit of a letdown for us. We came specifically for the shave ice and didn't try anything else on the menu. Unfortunately, the shave ice itself just wasn't great. The ice was very hard instead of light and fluffy, there wasn't nearly enough flavoring, and it felt overpriced for the quality. The portions were comically huge, which sounds like a good thing, but it actually worked against it. Even after adding sweetened condensed milk, the flavor barely lasted about a quarter of the way through, and the rest was just plain ice. On the positive side, the service was nice and friendly. This Solana Beach Plaza corner suite used to house a Subway store. Solana Frosty now occupies the space with a plethora of frozen treats as offerings. There was no inside seating, however several tables were outside on the sidewalk. The parking situation was fine as this plaza wasn't bustling with customers. Four menu screens were mounted high and to the right when you walked in. The variety of items was impressive for a small operation. Soft serve and hard scoop ice cream, floats, milkshakes, splits, boba milk tea, Hawaiian shave ice, sand buckets, and dirty drinks were the main categories. I selected the shave ice which allowed up to three flavors to be added from the fifteen choices. My trio was guava, lilikoi (passionfruit), and mango. The quality of the shave ice was good as they had a machine that grounded the ice block into a powder. My issue was the serving size for the $7 price. On the islands, the businesses are much more generous with the portions. A large cup or cone of ice cream was only $6.50 so for fluffy ice flavored with syrups to cost more was disconcerting. That was the reason why I limited the rating of my experience at Solana Frosty to three stars. read more

When I heard this was coming I was very excited and was even happier knowing they were descendants of Pepper Tree in Vista. My girlfriend and I were very excited to try it and support so we went opening weekend. Unfortunately the service was very poor. Since it was our first time we were browsing the menu a bit and were never asked if we had questions or if we needed help. The girl working the counter was very inattentive and didn't say anything. I had to initiate our order. She wasn't friendly and wasn't helpful and to top it off of course she flipped the screen around and asked for a tip lol. Not today. And of course she didn't say anything after that, not a "We'll call you when it's done" or even a "Thank you". For the ice cream, I got the Table Tops shake and it was good, that's the only reason I'm giving them a 2 star review. My girlfriend got a swirl soft serve cone dipped in butterscotch. First attempt the young girl dropped the ice cream in the butterscotch lol. Second time the owner did it. Overall the service was terrible, I understand they are a new business but good customer service builds reputation and lasting customers. I won't go back for a while. read more
