One of my favorite Gelato shops in SD! Although it's a sister location to An's Dry Cleaning, the line is a lot shorter, especially if you go right when it opens. I love how the staff does flavor tours, where you get to sample and hear about each flavor before you order. I got a large double scoop of the leather (chocolate chip cookie) and visor (pistachio) and loved how nutty visor was. I would recommend pairing nutty visor with cypress if you're interested in a dark dubai chocolate note. This shop is close to the beach, but there is a paid garage attached to the plaza. Their gelato is truly the best I've had in my life - dare I say, I enjoyed this more than the gelato I had in Italy. The ceremonial strawberry matcha flavor was DIVINE if you're a matcha lover. Such strong pure matcha flavor, just the right amount of sweetness and creaminess. The strawberry jam is homemade. The strawberry sorbet was strawberry galore - 6 lbs strawberries per batch. I love that they let every customer do the flavour tour. It does crank up the line times but it's worth it. Also, it's only a long line if you catch them at a busy time like weekends or after work. Spent an amazing weekend in Del Mar. The scenery, the people, the seafood made for a true getaway. After dinner we naturally started to think about something sweet to cap off the night. Found An's nearby, but when we walked over there was a line down the street, so we decided to come back the next day. We came back the next day after lunch and there was nobody in line! The setup here is different than other ice cream / gelato shops. Here they have a limited selection of flavors that they change every few weeks, and it's customary for them to give you a taste and explanation of each one before ordering, similar to a wine tasting. After the tasting they ask you to choose 2 flavors. I don't remember the flavor names, but they're named after iconic hats. I had a flavor that had mango and passion fruit mixed with a flavor that tasted straight out of a See's candy box. Wife had a super dark chocolate with matcha. All I can say are the boldness of flavors they achieve here can only be done thru using the highest of quality ingredients. Truly remarkable their flavors. They are extremely indulgent without being too rich, hard to explain but each bite was so addictive. We can't wait to return to Del Mar and bring the whole family (and dogs) next time, and An's will be a must visit on that trip. True 5 star, must try spot. My co-residents and I knew that we had to stop by one of An's ice cream shops before leaving SD and I am so glad we did because this was the best gelato I've ever had. The experience was overall just so fun too because we were literally able to sample every flavor before ordering and they were all so good that it was hard to decide. The workers were so sweet and chatty and overall just added to the positive experience! There's a few tables inside and I absolutely LOVED their decorations!! There were so many hats all around and it was such a cute concept. For the gelato, I decided to get a small with the flavors Leather and Cypress. I've been going to An's for the past few years during my time in San Diego, and they have rightfully earned the title of #1 Gelato in the country. Every new flavor they create is a hit, even if it's not to my personal tastes. Each An's location has a different theme, and it's cute every time. There are two types of parking - you can either park in the structure (paid) or use the 20 minute street parking on the side. Although the line was out the door, I'd say we only waited about 10 minutes. We did notice the line growing even more so as we inched closer to ordering and upon our departure. It's super cold inside! They've got the AC blowing at 60 degrees, but for fair reason. Not much seating is available inside, but what they do have is great for two or three couples and slightly larger group. There are a couple of tables right out front as well. You can also find a stand up fridge with ready to go pints if you're interested in more volume or a shorter wait time! The lovely young lady asked if it was our first time visiting so she offered us their tasting flight of all the flavors. Even their cleansing palette flavor was delicious (tasted similar to a mint mojito). Everything was so tasty, it's hard to have a favorite. But I was happy to know you can get 2 flavors, no matter the size ordered!! What we ordered: Large Cup of Straw Hat (5/5) - this flavor will be the mango and passion fruit. She offered to top it off with tajin, so how could we decline?! It was beyond fresh and juicy of a flavor. Not too icy, the consistency was beautiful. It really was a delightful treat for the transitioning weather. Complimented the sunset well. Small Cup of Leather and Visor (5/5) - leather is supposed to be a brown butter + chocolate chip cookie flavor while the visor is a roasted pistachio. It practically melts together and gives a balanced nutty, malty, yet creamy experience. The chunks of cookie in the leather just elevated each bite and adds that desired texture. I liked that the cookie bits inside weren't all uniform. Honestly I feel like any of the flavors would pair nicely together. They are not overly sweet, it's pretty natural and subtle. Definitely a play on your ordinary flavors though, which I could appreciate. For example, they have a cookies n cream but they added Nutella. The vanilla flavor includes cinnamon and salted butter. The Dubai chocolate was definitely more chocolate forward and rich, but such a solid flavor that you can't go wrong. Overall, this spot is definitely worth the wait. I feel like they have an option for everyone and the staff is extremely kind and helpful. I'd definitely return and absolutely recommend to others. Named the best gelato in America, two years running and I can see why. It's a whole experience! Yes, the wait can be long sometimes, but it's worth it. I live in Northern California and have been to the other two brick and mortar locations on past trips to San Diego, so I knew what to expect and brought some local family along to experience the flavor tour. The first thing to know is that the names of An's don't tell you it is gelato. They are named after the businesses that preceded the space and are decorated with that theme. There are usually 7-8 flavors to sample before making your selection. The team is very friendly and helpful with questions (or with a new spoonful if your gelato slips off and onto the floor). If you don't want to experience the flavor tour, avoid the line and go straight to the cooler inside to choose a pint, purchase, and go. We had a great time, as expected. Our wait time in line was about 45 minutes. I LOVE chocolate, so I had a small size with Cypress and No Signal. My cousin loves fruity flavors, so he had the palate cleanser (lemon & ginger) and Straw-hat (mango & passionfruit). The most popular flavor is Leather (brown butter and cookies). Every flavor is excellent. It's really hard to choose. I tried the seasonal strawberry matcha (kasa) and banana matcha (poke beru). The strawberry had a mild flavor of strawberry with zero notes of matcha, and the banana matcha had a mild matcha flavor with zero hint of banana. I've had another flavor before that's not currently on the menu that was really good and had flavors true to its name, so I'm not sure why these two flavors lacked so much. Side note: the "flavor tour" they ask EVERY single customer if they want to go on, can cause what would be a 5 minute wait to turn into a 25 minute wait. I get they want you to have unlimited samples, but the approach isn't working for those who want to stop by and buy gelato. It's extremely annoying and unnecessary, so please stop asking. read more

The small is a little over $7 which is pricey but they do give a fair amount and it's a good way to treat yourself! I came by on a Friday afternoon (12:40pm) with my brother & surprisingly there wasn't anyone in line! This time I went with a small cup of the Carbon Fiber & the Full Grain Leather. The carbon fiber is their cold brew and Nutella gelato! This one had a strong cold brew with a light Nutella-- this time around there wasn't hard chunks of Nutella which was nice to eat. My brother chose the Mixmaster and Beanie. Mixmaster (butter, salt, vanilla) is one of their newer holiday flavors (that you can pair with their house made caramel apple cider!!) -- it is simple, but oh so good! This was my first time at An's Hatmakers and boy was I impressed! I am a Make A Wish wish granter and today at the end of my wish kid's day we stopped in unannounced to An's. Zack noticed my Make A Wish shirt and went above and beyond in making my wish kid's last event today a real winner. He encouraged him to try lots of flavors to get a sense of what he wanted. Our ice cream loving kid thought this was fantastic. I'd heard this gelato was voted #1 in the US by USA Today so I had high expectations before trying this location. I really wish we had known how orders are handled before we got in line. Instead of just handing out samples if someone in your party can't decide what to get, they turn the ordering process into a type of production and call it a gelato "tour." Because of this, it takes forever for anyone to get their order and the line stays long. I think this is done intentionally so it seems like they are always busy and super popular. Hubby and I both felt the whole production was completely unnecessary and took way too long. Located just across the way from the beach, great spot to get some delicious ice cream. This is one of a few locations but this one is all about the hats. The decor and overall feel inside was nice. The man that assisted us was amazing. We opted for the full experience and tried all of them. You truly can't go wrong with any of the flavors. We opted for the SnapBack and visor. So good. I was prepared for a line but the wait wasn't too long on a Saturday afternoon at 2pm. We parked in the adjacent structure. First hour was free and we made it just under the hour. We were able to try all the flavors before making a decision. The Visor (roasted pistachio) and Leather (brown butter + chocolate chip cookie) were my favorites but I had to share with the hubby who always gets chocolate so CA SnapBack it was. Every flavor was delicious, so smooth and creamy. Really enjoyed the waffle cone as well, it wasn't too sweet. I was hoping to try a matcha but the flavor was not releasing until the week after. 2 flavors in a waffle cone, get it and thank me later. read more

One of the best dessert places i've ever tried. I loved how they had you do a flavor tour so that you don't have to feel embarrassed trying out multiple flavors. All the flavors were phenomenal with visor (pistachio) being my favorite. It wasn't just purely cream, it had bits of pistachio in it which was delicious. Aaron was the worker who gave me the flavor tour. I loved how he went through every flavor, telling me how each flavor was made and a little background behind some of the flavors. An incredibly life-changing dessert places with the beach right next to it. I loved how cozy and clean the place was! It wasn't too overcrowded, but the right amount of customers that kept eveyrbting efficient. 10/10 without a doubt! read more

An's consistently delivers and their flavors are one of a kind. We had some family in from New Jersey and wanted to take them out for a treat on their last night here. An's is highly rated and they had been wanting to try it after reading about it being the #1 ice cream shop in America. The Full Grain Leather and Carbon Fiber were quite good. This location is great! There's plenty of parking between the lot and streets. Also it's close to the beach so you can grab a cone and enjoy a nice evening stroll. Don't get me wrong, their gelato is really good and I love the tasting experience where you can try flavors before committing. It makes it easy to know what you're actually getting. But the lines at this location are honestly insane, especially when you factor in the parking situation. That's the main reason I haven't been back as often. I love An's! The staff is always extremely welcoming and knowledgeable about their ice cream and ingredients. I also really enjoy the flavor tasting experience they offer.
