It's kinda in the dirt by the riverbed, but it's safe and free! The show itself was awesome! $10 gets you in to wonder at the the artists' work, many booths outside with the artists themselves there selling various prints, clothes, accessories, succulents, and beauty products. A taco stand and shaved iced cart were outside too for your eating pleasures. Fun live bands, a live painter, and a self titled pyrographer created portraits with a blowtorch on wood panels! Inside sat the glorious chocolate fountains, milk and white, with various dippers. Paintings hung on every inch of the walls, many by the artists outside as well. Buy the originals inside, or purchase the prints for cheaper (but still just as gorgeous) outside, love it! Two body painters graced each room with live paintings as a DJ spun some cool tunes. Straight in the back you'd find the bar, complete with beer, wine, and cocktails. I had such a blast at this show!

The GOOD: Awesome dance space Super air-conditioned Fun Great music Super great crowd Easy parking Affordable The Bad: It is REALLY crowded, sardine style Technique and the safety basics must come first in my mind. Especially with salsa turns. It is key that the lead learn how to safely twirl your lady! This was a level 1 class and there were no safety or etiquette instructions. Both are instrumental in learning how to be a great salsa dancer! We are definitely coming back, but will supplement with more formal lessons with less people. You should too....my two-cents!

The thing about reviewing art venues is that they excel or fail depending on their current…read moreinstallation. That is, unless you are a bit of a snob and actually care about what in my opinion are minor elements such as acoustics. What really matters is the quality of the installations. It must be noted that bad acoustics for example, can actually lend to the success of an installation anyway. My review will be mostly of the current "Touching Them Touching Me" installation. I did not get to see the installation that was going to happen later on on the evening but there are pictures of the main room where it was to be held here. Elizabeth V. came along with me this fine day I decided to check out Pho 87and also since I am a lover of the great and FREE art galleries in the Chinatown Arts District (CAD) which we checked out after the very tasty pho we had. I named this district the CAD! It has no official name that I know of. There are several galleries in the 900 block of Chung King Rd. and a couple between those galleries and Human Resources. I much prefer the art in this area to the art in the Gallery Row area even though The Hive and Crewest are great galleries. So anyway, Elizabeth V. and I walked by Human Resources on our way to Pho 87. There is actually a residential street where you can park for free and which you can use to visit Chinatown which is a really, really ridiculously cool place apart from its touristy notoriety. If you do not know that HR is there you will never find it as there is no sign above its entrance. What had me notice it was a young man dressed in the indie music style. I was wondering what that was all about but at the moment I was more interested in trying out Pho 87. After the pho and the galleries that I have visited before I noticed the same young man and remarked about that to Elizabeth V. who had enjoyed the CAD so much she said it would be good to find out if this was in fact a gallery. We talked to the young man and a guy that was chatting with him and found out that the place was in fact a gallery. The main room had many projectors in it which were facing in different directions. Obviously they were there for the installion that was going to happen later on in the evening. Then we walked upstairs and passed two flags draped on one of the posts of the staircase. The Touching Them Touching Me installation was pretty cool. There was a room with a mike and projected images behind it. There were seats for you to sit and take it all in. They were playing some really eerie music which went really well with the installation. In the next room there was a small bar. It looked like a real bar and what was really cool - as with many installations was that you could interact with it. By this I mean that you could touch it, walk into it and even grab a REAL beer from an ice filled beer tub! Now that's cool! There were awesome things to look at in this installation such as an antique bulb on an antique fixture and some candles on an antique candle holder. I love simple things like this that arouse curiosity in an installation. Very eerie by the way. The artist succeeded in creating that mood quite well. When we left we chatted a bit with the guys at the door and they turned out to be really cool. Sometimes you get real art snobs at galleries but not these guys. I definitely plan on coming back to HR! It's quite the hidden gem!

The images engaged you enough to want to pick up the attached headphones to have a listen at the accompanying audio. I am a video editor, so I enjoyed the video exhibits. My favorite video was about a black man's coming out. There's other art too, if you aren't as interested in the videos. If you're in the area, Also stop at the Main museum (a block away).

When you show art here, this is one place in Los Angeles that it is guaranteed THOUSANDS of people will see your art. I have been in the art world thirty years and regularly suggest LACDA as a place for artists to have their first "success experiences" and learn the ropes. Anyone who tells an artist "Don't Pay to Play" probably advises artists to pay 50 grand for art school so don't listen to the naysayers. Many art shows with entrance fees are in out of the way places with no foot traffic. LACDA is central to the Downtown L.A. The floors are what you'd expect but somehow still grip-able even when slightly covered in sweat. There are cubbies at the front and two doors in so that people who need to leave early don't disrupt the class with light or noise. Parking can be kind of tight but there is usually street parking pretty close in the neighborhood around the studio.

I saw what I can only describe as a comedy magic show featuring Benjamin B. entitled "Trust Your…read moreInstincts." This particular show is part of the annual Fringe Festival, which is a mixed bag of shows, never knowing quite what you're going to get. I thought Ben brought a lot of energy to the show, told us fun stories, and dabbled in some magic here and there. Not your typical magic shows with card tricks and bunnies in hats, more of a storytelling show with moments of illusion. Obviously, Ben and his team put a lot of work into the show. It was my first time at the inconspicuous Skiptown Playhouse, but it worked for the show. A nice little black box theatre for quaint intimate productions here in LA.
