I've seen this place packed in the summer, with its outdoor seating area, and busy with hockey moms in the winter, huddled inside with their hot coffees, waiting for their kids. It always looked cute, and seems popular, regardless of the season. But until recently, I've never been here, as there are many cafes that I love on Victoria, nearby. This past visit, though, the weather is bloody freezing (how on earth do you Montrealers handle this deep freeze? OMG), and I could barely handle crossing the street, let alone walk up to Victoria, so my mom and I decided to meet a family friend here mid-morning. My mom's been here quite a few times and warned me that the food here is inconsistent: she's had grilled cheese sandwiches that were good and some that were awful. So I was warned. But I only wanted a coffee, so I can't really review the food. The place is light and airy inside, with walls of glass facing the park, and an interior glass wall overlooking the downstairs hockey rink. The interior was super clean, and very bright. I had to keep my sunglasses on (!). I liked how they had a bookshelf to borrow books, and a sign about the free wifi, and healthy plants scattered about. We ordered two cappuccinos and my mom asked for a carrot muffin. She asked the guy at the counter if the muffin was fresh from today and he replied that it was. (She had told me that sometimes the muffins are stale, but if you ask the guys if they're fresh, they are always honest). We asked for the muffin heated up, and for my mom's cappuccino to be extra-hot. The coffees were EXCELLENT and my mom said her muffin was also fantastic and very fresh, but they didn't really heat it up much (bummer). So here's my overall take on this cafe: it's super cute, they offer a decent selection of great-looking pastries (just ask if they're fresh), they have lots of snack foods (i.e., bagged chips, etc.), and a healthy beverage menu (and the coffees are very good). Meal-wise, I personally would pass due to inconsistencies and past reviews from my parents and other people who I know dined here. But in a pinch, for a coffee or tea and muffin, this is a great place, in the corner of a lovely park. And the counter guy was rather nice, too.

It had (and I'll definitely miss some stuff): fresh fig, field berries, an apricot, half a plum, apples, pears, pomegranate, dragon fruit, prickly pear, kiwi, melons, pineapple, clementine, grapes, mango, and I'm sure other fruit that I've missed. It's served with two poached eggs, cottage cheese and a toasted English muffin. Yum! It was so good, but almost too much food for one person. I ended up sharing some of the fruit with my BF, who didn't get any with his crepe. SERVICE Our server started out a little rocky, but quickly redeemed themself. They seemed a little miffed that I didn't know they would serve my latte with a KitKat stick and chocolate powder on it. I'm allergic to cocoa, so I had to send it back. I was sorry, but also, who does that without asking? They seemed to think I should have expected that. However, once we got over that little hurdle, they seemed to recognize that I wasn't being unreasonable and became rather pleasant and quite personable. I suspect the initial reaction was just a momentary lapse. Customer service can be exhausting, and I don't think they intended to be rude. AMBIANCE It's a typical brunch place in terms of decor and ambiance. It's a little noisy, but not rowdy. It's a little bland, but not industrial. It's not fancy, but better than a truck stop. The food more than made up for the ordinariness of the space.

I often go there in the morning with a colleague for a quick cup if the traffic spared us a couple of minutes. But it's like if the concept that someone might have only 15-20 minutes for coffee was a novelty to them. Shortly after we get coffee, we know we must start harassing the staff to get the check and wait again to get the machine. The coffee is good, but boy, the service is lacking. I didn't do a review of this place just because, basing it only on a coffee before work isn't fair. Our plates were ok. Ok size, ok food. My friend got a big onion skin in his potato. The ham was definitely from a real ham and not some pressed cheap meat. But there wasn't much. The potatoes were slightly undercooked. I think what rubbed me the wrong way was that we waited in line (without any line) and got told we missed the early bird special by 2 or 3 minutes. We obviously arrived last minute for it. But, I would have expected to at least get some polite explanations or something. Not a "can't do, the computer says so". Maybe the weekend staff goes smoother.
