This is only a review of the aebelskiver since I came to the Solvang Restaurant specifically for this little dessert. To be honest, I personally wasn't a fan. Compared to the other dozens of bakeries in Solvang that you can go to, I would prefer to have gotten something somewhere else. When I walked up to the Solvang Restaurant, I noticed that they had a bunch of aebleskivers sitting under a heat lamp. And I should have taken this as a red flag, but this definitely means that the aebelskivers you're eating probably won't be made fresh. And I was right about this because as soon as I ordered, I was given three little aebelskivers. There was no time delay between ordering and receiving. Had they been made fresh to order, they may have tasted better. Essentially, the aebelskiver here tasted like a mashed up pancake that was made into a little ball. While pancakes are delicious, a heat lamp pancake isn't that great. To eat the little sucker, you definitely need a healthy dose of the jam that they include. Otherwise, it's pretty dry. A local bakery recommended I go to Solvang Restaurant to have some, and so I came to find my Danish Donut. Growing up, I went to a family Iowan farm for the summer where the grandparents would make these tasty delights for our breakfast treat. I remember them having a special crispy outside and a fluffy baked inside. Walking up to the restaurant my first red flag was that the outside window served the Ableskivers one way with powdered sugar and raspberry sauce. They made them by the masses and under a heat lamp. We received them and they were more or less a rolled up slightly sweeter pancake. ALL WRONG. I understand needing to make these in a way that could easily be fed to a mass amount of people. These were fed to many who didn't know what was good by the traditionalist on the Danish Iowa farm. But. This did not come close to that I expected. I still purchased a dozen to take back with me, and the raspberry jam was put in separate containers for later rather than pre drizzled on. They were put in a large donut box, so they were easy to carry. The family enjoyed them nonetheless. We were hungry and still had a drive home so my boyfriend also bought a danish sausage. This was Magic. It was full of flavor, juicy, and I almost stole his half. Perhaps this should be their specialty. This place gets 3/5 stars for the attempt at the donuts and because of the danish sausage - this made it better. The product still tasted good and they used the correct pan, but the execution doesn't meet the expectation for someone who really knows what Ableskivers are. So. Worth. The. Wait. I have no idea what magic they put into these aebleskivers but they were the perfect midday treat during our Solvang day trip. The wait is pretty significant though, so have someone in your group stand in line and alternate if you're traveling in group to maximize your time in the lovely town. Fortunately, I came with a group and some of us were willing to wait in line for the ever-popular jumbo donut hole-shaped pancakes while the rest of us explored the quaint tourist magnet that is Solvang. The aebleskivers ran for $4 an order (3 pieces each), were slathered in a sticky fruit jam and dusted generously with powdered sugar. The balls were fluffy, but could have benefited from some extra crisping on its surface, if you ask me. We also picked up some hot chocolates to warm up our souls. These were heartily rich and topped with a mound of whipped cream so massive that I felt like a kid just looking at it! Definitely don't miss out on ordering the aebleskivers. Another thing that I found tasty was the Danish sausages. Not very greasy but cooked just right. Even my toddler wanted a bite, which is rare because she's going through an oatmeal only phase. My only issue is the tight seating. This was a delightful find just off Copenhagen Drive. We were disappointed that our favorite spot had too long of a wait, but the Solvang Restaurant more than made up for it. I don't remember if I came here the time before last, but since I don't remember I am writing a review now so that my future self can read this the next time I am in Solvang. A friend took us to explore and enjoy the cute and charming town of Solvang, the Danish Capital of America, in Santa Barbara County. We had a great time walking around and soaking up the festive atmosphere. Even though it was so crowded, we only waited around 15 minutes, then were taken to the comfortable booth seating. It was after 1pm so they were not serving breakfast anymore, but I had already made my choice: Chicken and waffles! We also got the Open Faced Sandwich plate to share, which is supposed to come with potato salad but they substituted with french fries, upon my request, with no problem. Both were traditional Danish style entrees. The chicken and waffles were amazing. The chicken was deep fried and the skin was extremely crispy, incredibly flavorful and mouthwatering delicious! The chicken itself was a tad dry, but still tasty. The waffles were very good as well, fluffy and slightly crunchy and sweet. The sandwich plate was just okay and consisted of 4 different types of sandwiches: Ham, tilsit (Danish cheese), roast beef and meatball. I think I liked the ham one best. It had a peas, carrots and mayonnaise mix on top. The tilsit had a piece of carrot on it; the roast beef had sliced cucumbers and the meatball had shredded radish on top. The french fries were perfect skinny fries and tasty. Of course we had to order the famous aebleskiver, which is the traditional Danish pancake, in the shape of a ball, sitting in raspberry sauce and topped with powdered sugar. They were fluffy and doughy, though I thought the sauce was a bit too sweet and the aebleskivers themselves didn't have a ton of flavor. The service we received from our waitress was wonderful. We walked by this place and saw someone making these yummy looking desserts (aebelskivers) through the window, so we decided to try some. We shared 3 aebleskivers a la mode, which includes two scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with raspberry jam and powdered sugar. Our last and final stop for our Solvang adventure was at the Solvang Restaurant. How fitting. It is home of the famous Aebelskiver. We didn't actually get to try the made to order delights during this leg of the trip at this restaurant but we will be back! Instead we enjoyed a breakfast of 2 coffees, the California Eggs Benedict, and the Denver Omelet with toast. The Eggs Benedict was good but the tomatoes weren't ripe and the avocados on the side were a great compliment and very yummy. The Denver Omelet was the best ever tasted and loaded with green and red bell peppers and plenty of hearty ham. No Danish outfits again but plenty of delightful Danish decor. Our waitress left the check and when we slapped down a credit card to pay we were told she was too busy to take it and to pay up front. It was the perfect amount of sweetness and the pancake balls were super fluffy and delicious. Great treat while walking around the nearby shops or to have as dessert after your meal inside the restaurant. They even sell the cookware they use to make these inside the restaurant by the register. After visiting some shops nearby, we decided to have lunch here. Let's start by saying that the Dane's aren't known for their food (with the exception of pastries/cookies), so my expectations for amazing 'authentic' Danish food are already low. This is further complicated by me having lived in Denmark for several months and trying to invoke nostalgia through an American restaurant; itjust isn't the same. Didn't realize I had already been to this restaurant back in 2012 timeframe (prior to me Yelp-ing), until I walked in and memories started to come back a little. Had I realized before I sat down, I would have gone elsewhere. Seems the aim here isn't for an amazing dining experience or mouth watering food. I feel it's more in-line with doing the bare minimum to get by because it will work (government work? Anyone? Buller? Guess I'm jaded b/c of my military days). The service is IHOP/Denny's quality and so is the food. I'd say, take advantage of COVID (lack of) crowds, and do some spicing up the place with Danish furnishings and decor and overhaul the ingredients and you would have a great spot in the heart of Danish-American land. We only used the walk up window to order the Aebleskiver so this review is only for that. You can dine inside for a full meal if you wanted. The line was long for the walk up window but there was a lot of room inside the dining room. An aebleskiver to me is like a big round donut hole but much denser. They were still hot when I got it so that's good but I don't know if a fancy round donut is going to make me want to order it again when there are so many awesome Danish bakeries around! read more
