On a whim during a road trip, we took a detour down through Solvang, and took a walk down their idyllic streets. We stopped in several shops, and then decided to stay for lunch, and decided since we were in Solvang, we ought to try to find a place that offered some authentic foods from the old country. After a bit of wandering, we came across The Bit O'Denmark, and it seemed to be just what we were looking for. I've lived overseas in Germany for a few years, and when I walked in I have to say the overall feel of the place was very European. Low, beamed ceilings, small tables with authentic feeling tablecloths, and divided into a couple of different dining rooms, it felt like I'd stepped across the Atlantic. The menu was straightforward, and offered a few things most americans would find familiar and appetizing. And then...there was a section specifically noted as authentic Danish dishes. Winning! I had the "Flaeskesteg," a roast pork stuffed with prunes, brown sauce, and apple sauce. It was accompanied by a sweet and sour red cabbage, cucumber salad, and roasted potatoes. It was wonderful. My palate was in heaven. I ate everything on the plate. They only had two beer choices, so I had the "Hoppy Poppy," an IPA, to go with it. The only way I could have been happier would have been some European import options. My beautiful lady had the "Bit O'Platter," which is three open-faced sandwiches: the Frikadeller, the Roast Pork, and the Danish Cheese. This turned out to be a wonderful choice; like three sandwiches in one! We were both splendidly surprised at the diversity and deliciousness of each one. And as luck would have it, we happened to be dining next to a mother and daughter who were speaking in a language I only understood about every 12th word of, due to my familiarity with German. I asked, and they said they were from Denmark. I asked about how authentic they found the meals to their home country, and they verified everything was quite authentic, although in their opinion, some of the pairings were a little odd. Time for me to try something different. I came to this place that's representing Denmark called The Bit O'Denmark. Located in Solvang, California. It's known for their Danish food, especially their frikkadeller. For me... I got a frikkadeller (Danish style meatballs) served with purple cabbage salad, and a choice of mashed potatoes or roasted potatoes. Got it with roasted potatoes. When I took a bite of that.... I must say this was delicious. The brown sauce for the meatballs was on point. It's not quite gravy though, but pretty good stuff. Roasted potatoes was real tasty, better than French fries... lol. Definitely will order that again the next time I come to Solvang. My dad ordered the piccata salmon. He said the salmon was sooo delicious. My step-mom and step-sister shared the prime rib beef sandwich and some fries. Sooo delicious. I didn't take the pic of the salmon though. Maybe next time. Service was pretty good. Overall.... Went to Bit O' Denmark and honestly it was kind of mid overall. We ordered the potato skins and for $15 you only get four pieces, which felt pretty overpriced for what it is. They probably cost a few dollars to make, so I expected more. Flavor-wise, they weren't bad, but they definitely needed to be crispier. The texture was a little soft instead of that golden, crunchy bite you want from potato skins. They also could've used more bacon and a bigger portion of sour cream to balance everything out. It just felt a little underwhelming and not fully executed. The clam chowder was actually pretty good though. It was creamy and had a nice consistency: not too thick and not too watery. The clams were decent, and the base had good flavor, but it definitely needed a bit more salt to really bring everything together. It was close to being great, just slightly under-seasoned. Service, unfortunately, was the worst part. We had to get up and ask for a spoon ourselves, and no one really checked on us the entire time. They didn't ask how the food was or refill our water once. Called in the afternoon they said no reservations first come first serve. We walked around for a couple hours until we got hungry. Noticed both times we walked past restaurant there was no line. At 7:15pm we walked in to have the host tell us she had 100 ppl on the waitlist. That we were supposed to come in and put our names down and then go walk around until we get a call. This was not told to me on the phone. The restaurant closes at 9pm so there would be no way for us to eat there for our anniversary dinner in time. She ended up making things right but there was confusion as she was going to seat us inside at a two person table but then put us outside at a 4 person table when there was two of us to freeze. This is where the nightmare continues. The roof was dripping all over our table. We were moved by the server to an even colder table next to an open door and roof. No heater near us. They did not even turn the heaters on until 8:20pm for others freezing. Every party after us refused to sit at the roof dripping onto them table. We put in our drink food order and it took them 45 mins to bring the food as we suffered in the cold. Server forgot our soda. Had to as again 20 mins after ordering it. We were the only ones without the shall rug to keep us warm on our chairs. Only good part. Our food finally came out and the Chicken Marsala was delicious. The mashed potatoes I do not recommend as they taste like powder. They were not edible to me. Wish I had ordered the baked potato. The wienerschizel was just ok and would not recommend for $40 price tag. I had no idea this place had such a low rating as I only checked through Google Maps. I need to check yelp each and every time for accurate reviews! Falling apart chairs, leaking roof, and rips in drapes did not make a special anniversary in Solvang. I had a good experience here in 2021, but funnily enough, both times I dined here, I witnessed a fight happen in the restaurant LOL. Seems like this place is a hit or miss when it comes to service, but the food is an overall hit both times I visited! The ambiance was definitely a miss this time. The service we received was also 50/50. There was a kind server who confirmed my reservation actually existed (I phoned in for a reservation about a month ago, no text or email confirmation so I was praying I actually had a reservation) about 30 mins before my actual reservation time, but when I went up again during my actual reservation time, a different server was dismissive of me and said they "don't do reservations." I kindly pointed to the other side of the book where my name was written down and she seated me. The table wasn't clean and the lights flickered pretty aggressively throughout the room the entire night. As I was getting settled I noticed the dismissive server getting into an argument with another party who called her disrespectful. Must have been something that happened before I was seated. The entire party then told her to stop talking as she tried to say something back to them. Normally I am on Team Server having been in a customer service role, but to have the ENTIRE party yell back? Usually it's only the one "Karen" who feels wronged so... that was interesting to see. Tea. The food was good but took a while to get to us. I did notice that almost the entire room (5-6 parties) all had empty plates and tables so I knew we were in for a wait. We probably didn't get food until 30-45 mins in. Unfortunately I accidentally ordered the Wienerschnitzel and it wasn't what I thought it was, but still pretty good. The combo platter is good for sharing to try different meats. It's only two items though, one sausage and one mini meatloaf. The shrimp and scallop pasta was underwhelming, creamy but lacks flavor. I found myself eating the coleslaw, cucumber and sweet onion topping more than the stars of the show. The price was pretty hefty for the portions. Most entrees were in the $25-$30 range from what I remember. And some didn't feel worthy of that price. Overall, I will be giving a different restaurant a try the next time I'm in Solvang. read more

Unless you are from Denmark originally or have ventured to the Danish city of Solvang near Santa Barbara; then you are probably like me and haven't yet had an introduction to a Danish tableside (I assumed it is similar to Swedish food at Ikea). Join me for dinner at Bit O' Denmark in Solvang and let's discover a Danish meal together. Located on Alisal Road in historic Solvang; Bit O' Denmark holds a long legacy in Solvang being one of the very first buildings constructed in the Danish village in 1911 serving as both a college and church until 1929 at which time it converted to a restaurant. Remodeled in 1963, the Bit O' Denmark has sat recognizable to present day. My boyfriend and I had worked up an appetite Christmas-ing it up in Solvang for their annual holiday Julefest and wanted to complete the experience with an authentic Danish dinner. When in Denmark, do as the Danes do! Bit O' Denmark welcomes with the traditional architecture of Solvang with criss-cross exposed timber beams, bright yellow plaster walls and coat of arms encircling the exterior façade while the interior is a mix of a European old-country house and diner/cafeteria vibe. Essentially, expect less bells and whistles and more of grandma's kitchen. We were seated rather quickly alongside a variety of other diners from families to dates to a pack of goth-ravers and everything in between. All is welcome at Bit O' Denmark. So, let's get to the nitty-gritty: what is Danish food? Well, if you suspected that it is a mixture of Swedish and German with plenty of pickled vegetables, sausages, potatoes, smoked fish, open-faced sandwiches and basically your German Oktoberfest type fare than you guessed about right. The Bit O' Denmark is very rustic and home-y sticking to its roots versus jazzing it up for the Southern California crowd. For our Denmark adventure, my boyfriend chose the Combination Plate (Frikadelier [pork meatball] and mild pork sausage in brown sauce served with pickled red cabbage, cucumber salad and mashed potatoes - $29) while I opted for an appetizer as dinner of Graviax (aquavit-marinated salmon with a mustard dill sauce, served on lettuce with pumpernickel bread - $19). Although the dishes at Bit O' Denmark are pastoral; the plating is surprisingly not haphazard and attempts to look more artful rather than sloppy. My favorite highlights on my boyfriend's combination plate were the pickled red cabbage and cucumber salad which were excellent in their sweet and sour acidity and a perfect accompaniment to the Frikadelier meatball and sausage. The meats were both delicious even if not super unique in flavor - although the plum based brown sauce did step it up a notch. My Graviax, which I planned to eat by means of a salad with the greens/salmon as I can't eat Bread a la my Celiac; was VERY tasty: bright aquavit, lemon and dill flavors in a mustard sauce on thinly sliced cold salmon on lettuce is somehow absolutely delicious and was filling for a light dinner even though an appetizer. It was honestly much better than I thought it would be! Bit O' Denmark is absolutely successful at bringing the Nordic foods of its people to Solvang tourists. Service at Bit O' Denmark is neither here nor there: the wait staff gets the job done but they don't pamper you or become your best friend. Maybe that is the way in Denmark? My husband and I enjoyed our 3 day vacation in Solvang and we have tried pretty much all of their restaurants and by far this place did not disappoint. They hit all the high notes for us with friendly staff, attractive Danish modern decor, a few fun cocktails (I had their espresso martini, $16 - excellent foam!), and a menu with plenty of authentic Danish as well as other American options. Photos of menu and wine list attached. We started with the pickled herring plate ($21), which came with three flavors of herring plus gorgeous, dense Danish pumpernickel bread. It could be a meal and I don't think I could choose my fave flavor: the curry, tomato, or vinegar pickled. A pickled herring flavor parade! Loved it. For our entrees we had the Danish Combination Plate: a mild banger-style Danish sausage, pork meatballs (frikadeller), delicious gravy, warm red cabbage salad, cold cucumber salad, and a choice of potatoes (we had the roast potatoes- perfect!). $29. Is it really Denmark? Fantasyland? Maybe not, but it most definitely is a Bit o' Denmark. The restaurant's outdoor decor is so enchanting, it feels like you've tiptoed straight into a fairy tale set. Daily specials are written on an ever so cute chalkboard just outside the entrance. We arrived with Viking-sized appetites, ready to conquer Danish cuisine, but then the Monte Cristos were spotted on the menu. We knew what we had to do. Can you say symphony of flavors? Wow! We just really wanted soup on a chilly Solvang evening and this place delivered! They had delicious clam chowder soup with sourdough bread pieces. It hit the spot. My mother and I took a day trip to Solvang this past weekend! It was really fun despite the long drive and Solvang is adorable. I saw this restaurant while looking around and decided it was the best choice for something my mom may like! They're personable and remember things about their customers. We're new but there were two tables near that I could hear this from. I took a look at their outside seating area in the back while going to the restroom and it was a cute little area! Food - 5/5 I'm a vegetarian so I can only speak on my actual experience with the pasta and charcuterie. Shrimp and Scallop Linguini I got the seafood on the side to let my mom eat it! It was clearly well-cooked and not overdone at all, which is great. Nothing worse than dry shrimp and scallop. The linguini itself was creamy but not overly creamy. The unique and fragrant flavor of the saffron helps offset it and lends a wonderful taste to the sauce. I don't think the tomato adds much except color but it helps it be just a little less creamy! I'm not a big fan of creamy sauces but I didn't mind this one. Charcuterie board Best part of the entire meal :) I didn't eat the meat so I can't comment on the quality but the cheeses were all amazing!! They let us pair it with sweet grapes, apple slices, candied walnuts, strawberry jam, and olives. The beauty of a board is variety and to be able to make your own fun lil bites. Stopped by this restaurant for my birthday. It was a great choice. Prompt service, very knowledgeable about the food served. We got artichoke dip as an appetizer- it was a great choice. The entrées were phenomenal. I absolutely loved the red cabbage and pickles. I can eat those all day long. And the dessert was awesome! The only reason why I'm giving 4 stars is because they allowed a dog in a stroller into the establishment. This crusty fat white dog was staring at me the entire time and moving around in his stroller. The owner petting it the entire time. Before anyone comes @ me. I'm a huge dog lover. What I don't like are people who abuse the system calling their dogs "service dogs" when they are far from it. They ruin it for the people who actually NEED a service animal. Service dogs are the only dogs that should be allowed in establishments as they are TASK TRAINED to help their owners with disabilities, whether it's a physical disability or an invisible disability. They should be focused on their owner, and probably not be a visually impaired dog staring off into space or staring at someone's food. And just to be clear, an emotional support animal does not have the same rights or protection as a service dog. I wish establishments were brave enough to ask the TWO questions that are LEGAL to ask. 1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability? 2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform? Stopped by on a whim because most of the restaurants in the area were unwilling/unable to accommodate a large group (7 adults and 4 babies). We stumbled across this restaurant while walking around and they were able to seat us on the patio (which is a covered outdoor space). Honestly, the food was pretty decent. I wasn't expecting much because of the lukewarm reviews, and nothing really spoke to me as I looked over the menu. But I decided to share the Grilled Chicken Club (with a side of Caesar salad) and the Bit O' Burger (with a side of sweet potato fries). Both were surprisingly better than I expected. The burger - which we got medium rare - was juicy and good. The sweet potato fries tasted great, although I wish they were a little crispier. What really stood out was the service. All the servers were so kind, and they checked up on our party regularly. They came by often, asking if we needed any water (with pitchers in hand) or if we needed anything else. They were prompt in bringing out anything we needed, whether that was more utensils or napkins. Would definitely stop by again if I were in the area for the great service and good food! read more

My low rating has a couple of factors to it but first is definitely is the cleanliness level. The women's bathroom was gross. There was poop on the toilet and blood on the floor. It was so awful. I went once when we got there and once after our meal (about 1.5 hours later) and it was still dirty. We got appetizers and had to ask for small plates to share. The small plates were dirty. 2 of them were covered in ketchup. Next, we ordered 3 things. Food was very bland and nothing I would ever miss. Even the French fries were just super basic and plain. The waiter also brought out the wrong order. With the long wait that it takes to receive your food to begin with this was not great and we ended up just sticking with the mistake order to save time. The red beer which they're known for on tap was really good but only 2 of us could get them bc they ran out after that. Overall, don't go. It's over priced bland food. They ran out of the few things they have. And it is dirty. If you come here I'd only go for a beer. Also service sucks, no personality and everyone seems irritated upon arrival. I get it's a busy time but customer service needs to improve. Also zero decor going on. Outside back area is better than inside but still super basic. Very disappointing. A great place to eat at. The decor of the outside and inside really screams Denmark. We had a large group (8 people) and 2 puppies and were seated very promptly (time: Sunday afternoon). Of course there will be Entrees from Denmark.. but if that's not your cup of tea, there are other entrees to choose from. I had the combination plate and it was very well made. The purple cabbage has a sweet vinaigrette taste to it. The meat patty actually has a sausage taste and texture to it.. meaning if you slice the sausage and patty together.. I wouldn't be able to taste it apart. Each item on the food goes so well together. Only complaint was our food arrived a little slower than usual.. but it could be because we were a big group. Definitely excited to come here and try some authentic Danish food. The restaurant has a cool vibe with a Danish aesthetic and lots of call backs to Solvang. We were able to be seated quickly and had an all around attentive and friendly host. The crab cakes were a good quality but sat on top of a salad that wasn't really necessary and made things a bit wet. The Monte Cristo was surprisingly light and tasty with a great jam. Lastly, I ordered the 3 open faced sandwich combo and the cheese with bell pepper is definitely the sleeper of the group. Also, the cucumber and cabbage salads were amazing. The lettuce seemed a little over the top and made things kind of soggy, maybe order without. I do feel like this was the easiest dish to capture the overall palette of Danish flavors. Everything out the door with two drinks was about $85 so also very affordable, especially for a busy area with lots of tourist traffic. I would come back, but I wouldn't order the roast duck again. I order duck whenever it's offered, so I know the dish and its varieties well. What I was served tasted like chicken, not duck. Stumbled into this place in Solvang and so glad we did. Super cozy historic little spot with really good Danish food. We got the combination plate and honestly couldn't go wrong, the meatballs and red cabbage were the best part. Staff were so friendly and chill, made us feel right at home. 5/5 in all categories. We almost didn't come in because it had 3.5 stars but we decided to give it the benefit of the doubt. We were immediately greeted and sat at a table in the bar area. I was surprised at how brightly lit and clean the inside looked based on it being an old building. The water tasted crisp, which is always a good sign of a good restaurant. We order the crab cake appetizer which came out quickly and was phenomenal. It came with a full salad and an amazing basil vinaigrette dressing. For our main we got the Flaeskesteg. Highly recommend! All the flavors worked so well together. The menu kind of undersells it in my opinion. The "brown sauce" is this amazing gravy. The purple cabbage combined in the same bite with pork and the fig/applesauce is to die for. I loved the sweet cucumber salad periodically to reset my palette for the savory flavors that awaited. What a find! The outside of the restaurant is beautiful. The service was absolutely phenomenal! There were 3 different staff members constantly filling up water, taking dishes and asking if we needed anything. My husband enjoyed everything we ordered! Although the pork roast is different than what I expected and it' was a little too hard, it was still good but their Marsala is the best! It was so tasty and delicious. Came as a big group for my besties birthday. It was fairly easy to get a reservation for lunch on a Friday. And the man who answered my call was very nice and accommodating. We had to sit outside since I brought my dog along, so sadly had to have the group sit out in a hotbox of a patio. The waiter gave us free rein to open the windows, anything to keep us cool, as all there were are ceiling fans at full blast. We were the only group crazy enough to sit outside in 85-90 degree weather! Wait staff was as good as to be expected. The food was good, only I found it to be pricey for the area in comparison to other restaurants nearby. I ordered an open faced danish meatball sandwich, comprised of meatballs (sliced thin) pickled cucumbers and stewed cabbage on pumpernickel. It was surprisingly good! My hubby ordered the monte cristo, and boy that was probably the best thing on their menu. Perfectly crisp with a hint of sweetness, cheesy and meaty with the ham inside. My bestie ordered their New York steak entree. Can't speak for her, but she said it was a bit tough for medium rare. The mash potato was good no salt so the gravy was the perfect touch. Not fond of the big slices of onions on top of the steak. However, the veggies were delicious and tender. If we were to ever visit again, I'll be sure to sit inside! read more

We came to Bit O'Denmark several times throughout the day. First to try to get a reservation for dinner, and were told they don't do reservations and we needed to "get on the list". Then we came back later, put our names "on the list", then waited. Came back a third time and were seated. The first host we dealt with was very friendly. Our server was also friendly, if not a bit inattentive. The food was good. My wife had the Danish meatballs and I had the rack of lamb. Both quite tasty. Now to the things that bring this review down. First, and a little disappointing, there wasn't anything Danish about this place (other than some authentic Danish food dishes). There was no Danish decor, the decor was generic, the wait staff was dressed all in black. This place looked more like it was trying to be a hip cafe/wine bar than a Danish restaurant in a Danish tourist town. Second, and the star of this review, was a woman who appeared halfway through our dinner. She was either the owner or the manager, she was dressed more casually than the other team members (leading me to believe a "higher up") with clear rimmed glasses. This woman was incredibly rude and abrasive to people that were coming in to put their names "on the list" (which we've established earlier is the proper protocol). Below are just a few highlights to how unbelievable this person was. First, she wouldn't even greet people when they came up to the counter, just telling them, "there's a wait." When people asked how long she would openly grumble about the customers currently eating. At one point she loudly stated, "The problem is people just aren't leaving!" As she was trying to dissuade someone from adding their name to the list. Which was followed with, "Tables are not getting up fast." There were several times throughout the night that she lamented how late they were going to have to be there, and lamenting that they weren't closed "all week". She loudly talked about us specifically on multiple occasions. Telling the wait staff to "check on us" and not in a "see if they need anything kind of way". One time she walked by our table looking over our meals and then immediately walked back and told our server to "see if they are ready for the check" loud enough that we could hear her. Also, during our meal she told 6 different people to go to Craft House. Which was "a much bigger restaurant" and "just down the street" (according to her). At one point she rudely told a customer, "You know, we're not the only restaurant in town!" For a restaurant in a town whose entire economy is based around tourism, this person seriously does not get it. It really seemed like she was annoyed that people wanted to eat at the restaurant and was doing everything she could do to dissuade them from eating there. She certainly made us feel unwelcome and definitely gave the impression that we were not welcome to sit and enjoy our meal and our evening out. But what do I know? Maybe they're so successful that she can turn all the customers away that she wants. I don't think we'll come back the next time we're in Solvang. Maybe we'll go to the Craft House, which will be 7 customers she sent their way. read more
