We were passing Solvang and haven't eaten breakfast yet, so we stopped by the Belgian Cafe for brunch. We put our info down and waited only 10 minutes before a table was ready for us. We decided to split several items so we can try a bit of everything. We got the spanish souffle crepe ($15.50), travelers special ($16.95), and danish omelette ($15.95). The crepe had melted cheese on top reminiscent of gooey nacho cheese and it did not mesh well with the rest of the crepe. The crepe also came with a side of fruits (bananas, cantaloupe, honeydew, grape, pineapple, apple, and orange) as well as two carrot sticks. The danish omelette was much better and included hash brown and choice of bread (I took sourdough) and an orange garnish. The travelers special was a waffle and came with bacon and the same fruits as the crepe. The waffle wasn't as crisp as I had at other breakfast / brunch spots. This is a diner located in downtown Solvang. I think it's more of a breakfast/brunch place because when we came around lunchtime it was pretty empty. The server was super annoyed we only ordered two entrees for 3 people but we wanted a light lunch since we had a heavy breakfast. I got a lunch combo which came with a cup of soup and tuna salad sandwich. It also came with a pickle, carrot, apple slice, and watermelon slice. The food was quite basic but got the job done. This has been my favorite breakfast stop since 1976. Glad I discovered this place back then. It has moved from its original location, but so glad they stayed in business all these years. My favorite is their specialty, Belgium waffles. Whether it be plain with butter and syrup, or filled with chocolate or some kind of custard type sauce, they are all delicious. The waffles are so thin and crispy. The secret is in those old waffle makers. I have bought several waffle makers, but the ones I have bought just don't get that same crispy, thin edged waffle. Cute little cafe on the streets of Solvang. It was our first time visiting Solvang and we noticed this Belgian cafe nearby. My friend and I tried their Solvang burger and tuna melt. The tuna melt was so good we got carried away eating it that we forgot to snap a quick photo! 100% recommend the tuna melt! The Solvang burger was good too, it comes with Fries, fruit and grilled onions. Very tasty. We were traveling with my pup Jack and was even able to order a beef patty for the pup. Service was very friendly and kind. The only downside would be the amount of bees outside the cafe. We sat at the patio as our pup was with us and the amount of bees outside was pretty hefty. We decided to try Belgian Cafe for a special family breakfast to celebrate Mother's Day since our mom wasn't able to be with us on the actual holiday. Walking up to the restaurant, it looked lively and busy, which made us excited to finally try somewhere new instead of our usual breakfast spot. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill almost immediately. When we walked in, nobody acknowledged us. Several waitresses were gathered together near the front, talking and looking at their phones, while another employee squeezed past us without even a simple "we'll be right with you." We stood there awkwardly for a minute or two before someone finally turned around and asked, "How many?" No greeting, no welcome, no acknowledgment that we had even entered the restaurant. It was a surprisingly cold first impression, especially considering there were several open tables inside. We were seated as a party of four, but shortly after, we got a call from my nephew saying he and his girlfriend might join us. We politely asked our waitress if accommodating two more people would be possible, and she assured us it would not be a problem. She even suggested pushing two tables together if needed. When my nephew arrived, however, the entire answer suddenly changed. We were told no tables could be pushed together. We asked if we could move outside instead -- again, no. We were told tables could not block the sidewalk. What made this especially confusing was that there were already tables inside that had clearly been pushed together for other guests. When we pointed this out, nobody could give us an explanation. To make matters even more frustrating, a party of six came in after us and was immediately allowed to combine tables inside without issue. At that point, it stopped feeling like simple restaurant limitations and started feeling dismissive and inconsistent. We ended up having to split our family between two separate tables across from each other during what was supposed to be a family celebration. Nobody ever attempted to revisit the situation, explain the inconsistency, or offer any kind of solution. Then our waitress informed us she was going on her lunch break and said our check would be left at the front. After that, nobody checked on us for roughly another 20 minutes. Empty coffee cups sat on the table, nobody asked if we needed refills, nobody checked if we needed anything at all, and eventually a person we had never seen before simply brought the check. The only genuinely positive interaction we had was with an older woman wearing a gray sweater, whose name I unfortunately did not catch. She was the only person who seemed willing to listen and help explain anything. She kindly gave me the manager's name, Evelyn, and honestly, I hope this review reaches her. I worked in the service industry myself for many years, so I fully understand that restaurants get busy and things don't always go perfectly. This review is not about wanting special treatment. It's about basic hospitality, communication, and consistency. Had someone simply greeted us warmly, communicated honestly, or checked on our table after our waitress left, this entire experience likely would have felt very different. Instead, the overall atmosphere felt dismissive and indifferent from beginning to end, which was disappointing considering how excited we were to try this place. I hope Evelyn, the manager, sees this feedback because customer service is ultimately what brings people back or keeps them away. read more

Extra star because the coffee was some of the best I've had in a while. Nothing fancy, but tasted really fresh and almost creamy. It can get busy around 830am: been here twice no bells and whistles, food comes out fast and taste good. My family and I went up to Solvang for the day. We absolutely love this little town. We eat here before some years ago and I remember I wasn't impressed before, but gave it another chance. Not impressed at this time as well, and I will not be going back! I will say the food was good. That's the only thing they had going for it, but not enough to make me come back. After our food was served, our server went on break, which is fine. But no one else took care of us! They had so many workers enough for each server to have about two tables each. Back in my day I could handle that whole place on my own. No one checked on us not once. Had to keep flagging down other people just to get a refill on our drinks and during this time, the manager kept walking up to our table because the first server put our bill down right away. To see if we were ready to pay. I wasn't even a quarter done with my food the first time like are you trying to kick us out?! It was so ridiculous and I let the manager know and she didn't really care. The atmosphere was small and cute but again nothing to write home to Mom about! Now the restaurant across the street where they make the round ball desserts is where we will go again they were great! Cozy and small restaurant with a punch of flavor. Visited two days in a row to have their delicious, crunchy, fluffy waffles. They were yummy and hot, their warm syrup made them even tastier. They took no accountability for what they did. all the waitress could do was say "let me tell my manager to speak with you." the manager comes out and I proceed to tell her that it is not right, and she has the damn audacity to say " it was just a little undercooked" I told " no it was literally raw on the whole inside" she was trying to justify it and cover it up since other people around us was listening. Regardless PORK CAN NOT BE UNDERCOOKED WHATSOEVER! she then tells me okay I will give discount on the bill, I said you should take off the whole order of "porkchop and eggs" off the bill not just the raw porkchop. she keeps repeating the same thing "I will discount off bill, i will discount off bill" I then go up to pay and then she goes and says "oh next time that happens tell us right away" I then tell her " we did tell you right away she just started to eat her eggs first and right when we cut it and seen it was so raw we notified your waitress" . her response was just *crickets* so like I said NO ACCOUNT ABILITY THAT SHE COULD HAVE KILLED MY SISTER AND HER BABY. I leave and go next door for a drink and look at the receipt and realized she never took off the raw order, instead she charge me "pork chop and eggs", "PORK CHOP" then minus "pork chop" making it as if she discounted the raw pork chop but still charged me $17.95 for my order, I go back to the restaurant and tell her and she tries to argue so I pull out my phone calculator of what should be the total and she takes the receipt out my hand and says " oh ill do it on my calculator here". a moment of silence as she realizes she mad another mistake and then says " oh your right the computer didnt do it right" . girl it isn't the computer its you. she says okay "let me give you back $7 and some change" I replied "so you cant subtract her whole order $17.95? your charging her $9 for 2 egg?" she says "that's all I can do , and keeps repeating herself. I said if that's the case you need to give me back $9.73 instead of $7 she goes "no I give you back $7" I told her no I gave you $132.84 cash you need to give back $9.73" she goes " oh your right" At that point there's no arguing with her and going back and forth I told her "that's not right that you guys are doing this and charging 2 eggs cause she ate the plate before realizing she got RAW PORKCHOPS I will be giving you guys a 1 star review and will never be coming back and warning other people". I dont even think they care anyways, seems like they're used to this happening. I should read other reviews before coming but we were all so hungry. Now we had to leave and my pregnant sisters was still hungry cause all she had were the 2 eggs that costed $9.79.
