I went close to closing on a Sunday so my choices were limited. I chose the salted caramel almond cupcake and a brownie for later. Both were tasty, but maybe just a little too tasty. They were both extremely flavorful to the point of feeling sick and turned off at the thought of sugar.. But I have a problem so naturally, it wouldn't stop me from going back to try something else. This is one of my favorite smaller bakeries/deli. Inside sitting is limited within the deli side of the business, but window and outside sitting exists. The breads are edgy and graceful. I enjoy the jalapeño cheese bread to provide shelter to my BLT w/ avocado-- so, delicious! I also created a humble and probably unoriginal "kiwi + cherry" Italian soda mixture-- yes, it's aweso-mazing ;-). This is a perfect place to spend some alone/personal time at. Or chat with a friend, etc. Also, it's nice for light reading at the window bar. Obviously, I enjoy this place-- visit, try it out, but not too many at once! Lol. The bakery is also good! Ordered a chocolate chip cookie cake for my son's birthday party on Tuesday morning, to pick up at noon on Friday. By 3:00pm, it still wasn't ready. We were told to wait 15 more minutes, so we did. At 3:15 we were handed a box & since they were so packed I didn't check inside the box until we got home. When we opened the box I was shocked (see photo & it will make sense). The "baker" had stuck 8 cookies together & tried re-baking them, obviously hoping they'd melt together. The result: a blob of over-baked cookies on a board with the words, "Happy 14th Birthday Eric!" on it. When my son saw it he said, "It's OK mom. It's not your fault." Went back to the bakery & the baker was "unavailable" to explain the disaster. We were given a 7 inch replacement cake (even though the birthday boy doesn't like cake, which explains the original cookie cake order). I suggested to the lady who gave us the replacement cake that Some Crust should not take orders when they are too busy to fill them. She just smiled & apologized. I'm super happy and super sad that I found Some Crust Bakery Happy- I'm happy because you are only ten minuets from my house. I'm happy because you offer every baked good known to man. I'm happy because you have amazing cupcakes. Sad- I'm sad because you close so early and it's hard to get to you before you close I'm sad because I will be moving out of the area in less than a month. I don't have much time left with you and we just met. Some Crust is located in the beautiful Village section of Claremont. This place is small but has a humongous selection of baked goods. Cupcakes, cookies, scones, tarts, muffins, danishes, pies, and cakes are just some of the items they bake fresh daily. They also serve sandwich's and salads for lunch. So far this is what I have tried. Cookie Sandwich- fluffy frosting sandwiched between two chewy chocolate cookies. This was the best cookie sandwich ever Maple Oatmeal Scone- This taste as amazing as it sounds. Candy Bar CC- chocolate cake filled with milk chocolate and topped with chocolate frosting. Chocolate lovers fantasy. Lime Crumble Cupcake- Let me start off by saying that I'm not a huge fan of any lime baked goods but this cupcake is phenomenal. It is made with a super moist white cake filled with a lime custard, topped with vanilla butter cream frosting and then rolled in pecan crumbles. This cupcake is defiantly now in my top 10 favorite cupcakes of all time. Maybe even the top 5. The people who work at SC are all super friendly. The few times I have been there they have pretty much forced free samples upon me (that is a good thing) and always answered all my questions with out being rude. The prices here are not bad either. Last time I got two cupcakes, a cookie sandwich and my bill came out to eight bucks. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy that my GF and I are moving to Downtown Long Beach. We are only a five minute walk from the ocean and many fine restaurants. I just wish I would have discovered Some Crust a long time ago. Somecrust, that name used to conjure up images of a neighborhood bakery, and also images of my family celebrating birthdays around a good cake. But then, I started noticing.. every year the menu changes. Not the menu items, but after each item.. now there's a *. This * indicates that it's gonna be an extra 15% of your "base price". They're saying.. anything not chocolate or white cake, is an extra X percent. They're starting to nickel and dime everything. Like.. oh red velvet.. that's not standard.. extra 20%. Oh that filling you like.. the banana custard.. extra 15%. Somecrust, you're greedy. You can't pull Sweet Lady Jane prices, because you don't have a celebrity clientele. You are next to a college, ok. The ppl that cater to your store are students and claremont residents. That means students and seniors. Ppl with limited income. I think they're doing this because they do make good products and they haven't had real competition yet. Well I hope Portos come to this side of town soon. And Somecrust, at $5.50 a slice for a wedding cake.. Are you kidding? You're ridiculous. I've been to a wedding where they had your cake. It was dry. Not just my opinion, the whole table agreed. There is a board of health ruling against animals/dogs in a food service environment. This bakery allowed a large dog in & it was welcomed by a girl behind the counter who, after petting the dog, went back behind the counter & handled food! Unacceptable, unsanitary, unhygienic. My best friend is getting married & called Some Crust to arrange for a cake tasting. She was very excited to get a cake here as we grew up in Claremont over 30 years ago & she remembered how great everything was there. Well boy times have changed! After spending time scouring their website & getting excited looking at the pictures she called and was informed (quite rudely) that they don't do that if your cake is going to be for less than 50 people! She was told that she was more than welcome to come in & order a cake and no they don't have any of their flavors available to even purchase to try! Guess they have enough other business that if you aren't having a big enough event that you don't deserve to be treated with the same respect. You aren't worth their time. If they had put this information on their website we may not have gotten this upset but sadly they didn't. Being an event planner, I am constantly using YELP to guide me in the direction of vendors with quality products and great service. After reading some of the reviews I was inclined to use Some Crust for a local backyard wedding. We came in for a visit and ordered a cake testing box , lemon bar, brownie and cheesecake bite. Everything, but the brownie was delicious! Brownie has the consistency of fudge and was to dense for our taste and our clients. The ordering process made me a bit nervous only because the girl handling the order was young and still unaware of their protocol and bakers creative ability. After ordering a small 8" round, plain cake and 3 other specialty small dessert bites for our dessert table we discussed that we would be in contact with further details and/or changes. A month before the wedding I contacted and SPOKE to the main baker. I explained our order and told her that we decided to copy the decal from the wedding invitation and have her pipe it onto the bottom of the cake. She assured me this was no problem and to email her a copy of the invitation. Day of the wedding comes and Some Crust delivers our order as planned. After opening a box of our pink strawberry mousse cups my mouth drops in panic...1/3 of the cups have fallen over and are ruined. The next box I open is the wedding cake...with NO DECAL just frosted!!! I call them back and explain nthe situation, tell them they must deliver new mousse cups immediately. I speak to the manager who tells me there is no possible weay to fix the cake but we can get a credit. I ask him to please give cash back, which I will give back to client. One week after the wedding, my partner goes into Some Crust and speaks to the manager who handled our complaint. He explains that he can ONLY give us a credit back to the bakery, hands her a gift card and NO APOLOGY! Where is CUSTOMER SERVICE people??? RUDE! I went into this bakery to get a couple of cookies after having lunch nearby with a friend. The young girl behind the counter was extremely rude. Like most people leaving a 1-2 star review here, I'm doing so because of the bad service. The clerk acted like I was putting her out of her way to buy a bag of cookies. This bakery is nestled in between a row of cute shops in Claremont that are perfect for date night and/or window shopping! A friend recommended the cranberry scones and cheese danishes at the bakery. I settled on a current scone and a snickerdoodle cookie, which came out to about $3.80. Great price! Scone 3/5 -The scone is fluffy in the middle and has a balanced sweetness to it. I personally prefer a more buttery take on scones such as those found at French Champagne bakery. Snickerdoodle 2/5 - thin, chewy cookie. Nothing to write home about. I waited about 3 to 5 minutes to be acknowledged after standing in front of the baked goods. I don't know why I was overlooked.... I came in at around 1:30 PM on a Saturday and it was not busy. I get why other yelpers have criticized their customer service. There are about 3-4 tables outside of the store and this bakery is not a good place for large groups due to lack of seating. This bakery is definitely cute, but the service and baked items that I purchased will not bring me back anytime soon. read more

My sister and I decided to get a cake here for our mom's birthday since our favorite bakery for cakes in Montclair was closed on Mondays. I had only ever heard good things about their cookies (which I've tried and they are really good) so I had hoped their cakes were just as good. This was kind of last minute too, our mom was bummed the whole day so we needed to surprise her. I got there and chose a white cake with raspberry filling and the outside looked nicely decorated. I think my sister called about it earlier and it was supposedly fresh. So I got to my mom's and my sister and I tried putting candles in the cake but we had to kinda force the candle in the frosting, which I thought was weird. It wasn't smooth but I looked over that since we still needed to taste it. My sister and I both tried the cake at the same time and knew immediately it was BAD. The frosting and filling were ridiculously thick, like it can break into pieces! It didn't even taste good at all so we didn't eat that part. But we barely even ate the cake part, it was super dry, tasteless, and didn't have that spongy-ish texture cakes have. I'm wondering how old it actually was because I've never eaten such a bad cake like that before. My mom said it was okay at first since we got it for her, but later admitted it wasn't good. We told her we'll get her another cake at our favorite bakery to make up for it. Had we known it'd be such a disappointment, we would have just bought a cheaper cake at a grocery store that would have tasted a lot better than this. This cake was $25 and not even worth $1. Maybe I just got a bad one but I definitely would not risk trying it again. If I am judging the cake alone, 0 stars. But the staff were nice and at least their cookies are good. I know I've also tasted a red velvet cupcake here before and it was just okay. TLDR; Cookies are good. Cakes TERRIBLE!! I used to ditch first period here when I got my first car in high school. I would stand outside with my specially amazing hot chocolate and think, "why be in algebra II when I could be HERE??" (I started ditching school for coffee shops as early in life as possible. People, buy your kids cars, but try to drop them off at school, especially when you introduce them to addictive substances such as caffeine at a young age.) I would get my hot chocolate with soy milk and regular unsweetened cocoa and it was probably the most delicious thing known to man. I guess it was a pain in the ass or something, because Mr. Somecrust came out and yelled at me. "Are you the little girl that ordered that hot chocolate?! Well I cannot have you asking my people to make that anymore because it takes too much time!!!" ...I was horribly ashamed! (Note: At my coffee shop I have to make every single ridiculous thing people ask for, even if it is a health code violation [I just must inform them first of the violation, if they say go, I go]) I guess when you are so fancy and in high demand though, you can get away with yelling at your loyal customers who are just 17 year old girls in front of everyone. (It not like I didn't tip and come in everyday or more than once a day, because I DID!) Hence the three stars. Now I extol your virtues: LEMON BAR! They use real lemon curd, real men and women use REAL lemon curd. Not charging for soy (or at least when I lived there they didn't)!! The cookies are good, yes, and the brownies are fabuloso. Great espresso!! Coffee and sammy stamp cards!! Sammiches and salads??! Amazing bread. AMAZING. Rosemary French. Damn, I thought they could only do dessert and coffee. But these are equally delicious and reasonable in price! (Though once I found a strange stick in my salad [like, a noticeably large twig, but was to afraid to say anything because of Mr. Somecrust aka Crust Nazi]). On the one hand, the food here, especially the baked goods, is good. They have great cookies and scones and the like. On the other hand, the service is abysmal. I don't mean the actual employees: they're always very nice and super apologetic about the wait. And there *will* be a wait. There is ALWAYS a wait. You will show up and the line will be 9 people long and out the door, and there will invariably be just one person working behind the counter. And again, she will be very apologetic about the wait. I've been eating their Almond Croissants for almost 20 years, now. It's the best eveeeeerr. The filling is delicious, the crust is flakey and the hint of frosting on top is yummyyy.... Everything else is delicious and worth a try, but the almighty Almond Croissant will always be my favorite. On numerous occasions, I've purchased a box of mixed pastries for work celebrations, and everyone always asks where I get them from. Also, their pastries are pretty big. I always cut them up to share. I always hear high praises for their boysenberry pinwheel or something like that. And anything with cheese is a popular one, too. I've never had a bad pastry here. Their prices are a tad bit high, but it's worth it. I don't know what happened but I have to re-evaluate my review for here. Bf got me a delicious pink champagne cake with raspberry jam and buttercream frosting for my birthday a year ago. We also got a regular white cake with white buttercream for his dad's birthday and both times delicious but design was minimal since it wasn't ordered ahead of time. So when I place my order in a month's advance, I expected something spectacular. I ended up pissed as hell. I custom orders a chocolate cake with mocha mousse and vanilla buttercream. I emailed pictures and specific instructions on what I wanted on the cake since it was a Dark Knight themed cake so I wanted it to look badass. I came an hour earlier than the intended pickup time to see how it was going and they said it was done. Cake looked like crap that I was so shocked and speechless. I wish I took a picture of the travesty but I was freaking out because this cake was going to my bf's surprise party. The cake was suppose to look like a building with grey brick-looking fondant everywhere. They gave me a cake that was almost covered on the side with the top of the cake WHITE AND PLAIN. The cake looked incomplete and it was made by a toddler. They didn't even read my clear cut instructions when I called them AND I emailed them. If they had any problems they could have called/email me since I gave them plenty of time in between. I wouldn't accept the cake at all and I demanded someone to fix it. Apparently all their decorators were gone for the day but they called someone in. I compromised saying that if they can just AT LEAST color the top grey and rearrange the decoration to where it was instructed to be, I would be decent. They told me that they would give me a discount and to come back on hour or until someone called me. Well whoever called me to tell me it was done was not pleased. You should have done it right the first time then missy. Came back to an average cake, not the badass cake I envisioned. I wasn't even offered the discount when I paid the rest but I did make someone come back to work so I dealt with it. The actual tasting of the cake was delicious as always. Look - I've been a customer here since it opened (under previous owner). Some Crust is not using top quality ingredients anymore. If you want to charge premium prices, then use premium ingredients, including really good butter, top flight chocolate, almond paste, etc. Step it back up a notch and put some $ into your product. We went here on a very busy, pre-Halloween day. While I can accommodate (in my mind) for the inconvenience of it being crowded because of the arts and crafts fair, I was quite annoyed with the set-up of this place, no real lines, displays in different parts of their very small store, not organized by any one thing........just a big mess to me. Also, as much as I tried to look around while waiting, it was difficult to move around, and once waited on, there simply wasn't time to ask questions or take my time ordering. My husband, who loves sweets maybe more than I do, he was so annoyed with all of the above, he just walked out..... he didn't even want to wait. A lot of the things looked fun, festive and inviting, but I ended up just getting a S'mores cupcake, which is not how I typically approach a bakery that's new to me. I felt pressured to hurry up and leave.... plus, I had no real space at the counter. Trust me, it was a mess. As for the cupcake I did select, it looked much better than it was. Yes, it was good but nothing to write home about. We actually came back to Claremont a month later, and I didn't even have the desire to go back in here to try something else. My friend introduce me to this place about five years ago. She told me about the annual village venture craft fair and that I must stop by "Some Crust Bakery!" no exception! I listened to her and was blown away from when I first entered the bake shop! Dessert galore in heaven!! It's like I'm in bakeryland. What do I want and how many? Forget the diet and calorie count because today is a cheat day for me. TIRAMASU CUPCAKE- This cupcake is by far one of the best cupcakes I have ever tasted. I am dead serious. The cupcake is super moist, filled with a coffee flavored filling. They weren't joking around with this cupcake. SUGAR COOKIES- Very moist indeed! I bought the spider sugar cookies. They had several different Halloween designs. They also gave away samples of their strawberry cake. It was yummy as well and tasted refreshing! I love this town. It's quiet and artsy! So I was nearby running errands and enjoy a very late lunch and wanted some dessert and ended up finding this place on my trusty Yelp app. I was pleasantly surprised, even with it being a Saturday right before they closed. Parking is a pain in the area because it's a great outdoor area where people love to walk around, shop and hang out. I got a mocha cookie and a tres leches cupcake. Both were great. Since it was so late, the selection was very limited but the options that I picked ended up being just fine for what I wanted. I didn't really get a long look at what they had available on their menu board, but they had a list of breads they make that I remember. Highlights of Some Crust (I have eaten basically everything) are the danishes, cupcakes (they did our wedding cupcakes and everyone loved them), coffee - they have individually brewed coffee just for you!, any sandwich with the kalamata olive bread but especially the chicken club, cakes, their dark chocolate chip cookies...I think I just listed everything they have. It is THAT GOOD. I tell everyone about Some Crust and remind everyone who has left Claremont that they loved it too. My one and only complaint is that sandwiches take FOREVER to come out, especially during the lunch rush. But that is because they are a bakery and sandwiches aren't their focus. Just give yourself extra time during lunch. And don't forget to get a cookie. Ooohhhh the love. One more thing: there was a review that said to pass on the carrot cake, but I would say that this particular cake is one of their most complex and amazing cakes they have. I was supposed to provide a home-made dessert to my co-workers, but I learned the hard way I should leave baking to the professionals (or at least don't let me bake, ever). This is what I ordered (all cookies): -Pecan Shortbread: this cookie melts in your mouth. Not too sweet or heavy (5 stars) -Mocha: more like a brownie than a cookie. Perfect for those w/a sweet tooth (4.5 stars) -Decadence Mocha: Mocha cookie + pecans & white chocolate. Perfect for chocoholics (5 stars) -Pumpkin Spice: A must for the holiday season! How can anyone not love this cookie? (5 stars) The cookies were a hit. I've only scratched the surface of this place and I'm thinking about going back again. I had a day off last Thursday and was waiting for the Folk Music Center across the street to open up, so I decided to give the Village a go-over. And I passed by Some Crust. This was the bakery that would furnish, way back in the day, countless high-school meetings with pastries--especially croissants and pains-aux-chocolats. So I dropped in. And ordered a croissant and a cup of coffee, black. They're just as good as they were, oh, almost 15 years ago. Crisp and flaky outside, tender inside. I want to say that the outside of their croissants are akin to the puff pastry--the millefeuille--of a Napoleon. It had a fragile resistance, in a good way, that a puff pastry should have. Too bad Starbucks is open just a block north. Some Crust would do well to have taken up residence in that space. Why? Because I'd like to maintain my youthful glow and avoid the mutagenic ultraviolet rays of the sun, I'm not much of a fan of outdoor seating. Some Crust would be six stars if it had a Starbucks-like setup. As they are now, there are three tables outside and one inside. And since I had some time to kill, I sat at the one inside table. And promptly thereafter some bloke sat down at the table with me. That's cool. I understand there's limited seating, and there's no reason for me to hog a table with three chairs. But please, if you ever meet me in public, don't bug me with idle chatter. I mean, if you're a Yelper, that's cool, we have something in common. Along with this indispensable infrastructure, a little bakery name Some Crust arrived in 1916. A bakery whose delicious treats are solely responsible for helping a new batch of dentists and weight loss specialists earn a nickel or three -- I'm sure. Ahhh, the boon of an new era had arrived. Fast forward to present day, and you'll find downtown Claremont bustling with high-brow restaurants who serve buffalo meat, wine bars that are lined with west coast pinots, and (gasp) a Laemmle's theater. What in tarnation has happened? Yet deep within the heart of this modern day village still lies Some Crust bakery, virtually untouched by the Drug Enforcement Agency. How do they get away with selling these pastries in public? They're like crack. O.K. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but I'm sure that they add nicotine or heroine or something. Terrible service for a wedding cake appointment. I went with my fiance and mom and as we sat down to start tasting the lady in charge, Jill, describes the flavors of the cakes and I find out the bakery made 2 mistakes. The PEANUT BUTTER and OATMEAL RAISIN cookies were good but the CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT had neither choc or hazelnut flavor. Wassup with that?

This bakery is located in a great location and the staff is friendly but its sooo small and there is nothing there after a certain time. My choices were limited to bread, cookies and a couple of brownies. I guess you have to come early in the morning to get a better selection. read more

My favorite place to stop for pastries! Pinwheels are my favorite, they also have really good danishes and bear claws. The mocha cookies are amazing! I really like the egg sliders but the wait often deters me from ordering them. The pastries are instant gratification. I get tea here often, they have a great selection but I'm not a fan of the coffee (don't shoot me!) I know lots of people like it, it's just not to my taste. The last hour of the day is happy hour, all bread and pastries are half off (cookies are excluded, darn it!). If you go for that, I highly recommend you know what time it starts and get there 5 minutes early. Often times there's a line already forming. read more

Key lime and pineapple coconut cupcakes. Who'd have thought? The possibilities at Some Crust Bakery are endless! These were the most amazing cupcakes I've ever had. The key lime was a white cake topped with whipped cream and had a key lime custard filling. The pineapple coconut was a light yellow cake with pineapple filling in the center and topped with white frosting and coconut shavings. OMG. Fan-freaking-tabulous. This is a cupcake lover's tropical fantasy! Some Crust Bakery also has breads, cookies, muffins, pastries and cakes as well as a variety of coffees and teas. One of the best bakeries in the IE, hands down. I've ordered from here numerous times and have never been disappointed. The place itself is pretty small and parking can be tough. Nothing fancy inside either. But the goods make up it all. everything fresh baked here, of course, with fresh and tasty coffee to go with it. The cakes are the highlight of this place. Order in advance, customize as desired... A little on the pricey side, actually a lot. Expect to pay 2-4x the price of regular bakeries/chains... but worth it IMO. read more
