Ube and matcha swirl upside-down ahboong
    Meggie T.

I love somisomi! Their flavors are always rich and creamy. This time around, we opted for the upside-down ahboong with matcha custard and a ube matcha swirl. The hot ahboong paired well with the cold and sweet soft serve, making this a perfect sweet treat after a night out!

This somi somi is located in a corner plaza right off of Garden Grove blvd. Plenty of parking and lots of customers inside and outside on a Sunday afternoon. Ordered the upside down ahboong which is the soff serve on a cup then the taiyaki on top. The regular ahboong is the soft serve on top and inside the taiyaki which gets pretty messy as the ice cream melts. They have rotating swirl flavors so for that visit, I got milk and ube. They also have regular daily flavors such as cookies and cream and ube by itself. They also have taiyaki's, which are served warm and are the fish-looking pastries filled with your choice of custard, nutella and even red bean.

I've been here a few times over the years. It's always packed to the brim with a line out the door and there's no inside seating except a counter you can stand at while people crowd around you waiting for their order. Last week I drove past and saw zero customers so I pulled into the parking lot with glee. I love taiyaki and this place makes them fresh to order. These are soft yet chewy fish shaped waffles. You can get them open mouthed with soft serve ice cream or sealed up with filling. They constantly rotate flavors so there's usually something new. My latest visit I had a matcha custard filled and a hottoek (nuts, brown sugar, and cinnamon) filled. Hottoek is their current specialty flavor and I highly recommend you rush to get one before they go. I probably could have eaten a dozen of these. The matcha custard was delicious too. In the past I have tried the regular custard, nutella, and red bean. You really can't go wrong with any. The soft serve is really good too. I'm not into eating ice cream via licking so they'll put the ice cream in a cup and place the taiyaki on top if you like eating with a spoon like me. I have tried the black sesame and oreo. Both really good. You can also add filling to the taiyaki besides the ice cream!

Somisomi always has delicious soft serve! I got the oreo and matcha swirl from their daily swirls with oreo and macaron toppings. The soft serve is super creamy and not icey at all. The oreo flavor was spot on and the matcha flavor was there and not overly milky. Highly recommend!

Reliable spot if you're looking for a sweet treat. My only issue is I sometimes don't like the swirl flavors but that just depends on the week. I do like the taiyaki a lot though and normally just get those. If I want soft serve though, I usually share the upside down ahboong with one or two other people since they're pretty decent sized Milk + banana pudding: 3/5 the milk flavor was ok, but I didn't like the banana since it tasted pretty artificial and reminded me of banana laffy taffy

Service is very fast. We love how creamy the soft serve is. Getting it upside down is the way to go! We tried the matcha custard recently and it's pretty good. I prefer the regular custard filling, but it's fun to mix it up sometimes. They offer unlimited toppings. So much to choose from.. I really like fruity pebbles and matcha powder. Taiyaki is so hot and warm. Soooo fresh. There is always parking on the side where the lot is. The line and crowd seems long inside and outside, but don't be worried! The line goes fast and people usually just stand around eating inside and outside of the shop. We are always in and out of here very quickly. We have been getting Somisomi a lot in the winter since November haha. I feel like I don't get ice cream as much during the summer. Such a nice winter treat. We love this place!

The taiyaki is soo delicious, we got the custard and the Nutella - both of which, I would get again. The line was very long (we came on a Friday night) and there is very little seating so you'll probably have to eat in your car.

    Upside Down Ahboong

I was really craving a certain mix of flavor, so I'm glad Somisomi posts their menu of the week ahead of time on instagram! I got the Matcha & Cookies and Cream Upside Down Ahboong with Custard and sprinkled Oreos. The best thing about this ice cream is how creamy and not crazy sweet it is! The balance of the Custard Taiyaki on top of it really seals the deal for me. I could eat either and both without getting sick of it. You can taste each flavor distinctively!

Easy parking + efficient service + small interior. The have different mixed soft serves weekly, but I usually order the ube soft serve ($5). Taiyaki and ice cream are good.

Yummy yummy yummy!! I love somisomi and I've been to multiple locations but this is my favorite. Compared to other ones, the Garden Grove has the best parking. I love how there's always new flavors and options to try. You get your order fast and it's always consistent!

First time trying out this location. It was reasonably busy when we arrived on a late Sunday evening but no long lines pouring out onto the street or anything like the DTLA location. When we stepped inside there was a girl operating the cashier station taking orders and a guy behind filling orders. There was maybe a handful of people waiting for their orders. When it came to my turn most of the crowd had cleared. I ordered the ube swirl with a taiyaki pastry. Simple as that. I waited on the side for my order. Waited and waited and noticed people that came after me were leaving with their orders so I got frustrated when I was practically the last one left waiting and the place was emptying out now. I walked up to the girl that took my order and she proceeded to look for my order as if someone else took the order. She said she couldn't find it. It was really weird cuz I was standing right next to her station the entire time. You'd think that maybe she would think "hey why is that guy still waiting or something" I thought ok it's been a long day I'll give her a break. She asked what I ordered and I told her. She gave me the order said sorry in a "just get out of here kinda vibe" so I left. I doubt I'll be coming back to this location anytime soon, but it was very conveniently located near a friend's house that I visited so it's unfortunate. I might consider giving them another try someday but you'd better bet I'm gonna be on top of that order this time and not just sit back and wait forever. This was supposed to be a five star review, but considering my experience... 4 stars overall cuz I really love their desserts. Happy Eats!

Ube with red bean filling taiyaki 8/10
    Hyunmee C.

Staff was friendly and patient with my kids. It was our first time so we weren't sure which flavors would be to our taste. But they were all pretty good. Peach - 6/10 it was too sweet for me Cookies and milk 8/10 Milk 8/10 Matcha and ube swirl 9/10 Ube 8/10 The taiyaki when it comes in the ice cream is not warm and actually a bit cold - still soft but not warm. We got the following as a filling - Custard, Nutella, and red bean they were all good 8/10 but there's not a lot of it just a simple swipe on the inside. The fillings were good but the taiyaki itself is just ok 7/10 We would prob just either get the taiyaki by itself or just the ice cream by itself. Cute little spot but no indoor seating; there are a few outdoor seatings but with a few homeless people roaming and yelling - it wasn't a very kid friendly vibe to eat outside.

    1. The ice cream definitely had a strong flavor of cookies & cream! I also like options for free toppings! 2. The spot has fast casual vibes! It has a cozy interior! 3. There is an indoor and outdoor area! There are no tables inside, but there is a few tables outside! 4. The staff were friendly and timely with my order! It took less than 10 mins! 5. Parking lot is huge! The spots are double-lined and not compact! Note: This spot shares a restroom for customers with the boba spot next door! Photo: Cookies & Cream Soft Serve and Taiyaki

Tangy pickled or fermented veggies, sweet pineapple, mushrooms, and soups help cut through all that richness from the fat. The pork and kimchi soup especially hits - it's super comforting and balances out the meal. This is also a great alternative if you're craving BBQ but don't have the stomach space for AYCE. These portions leave us full and satisfied every time. Overall, an amazing spot for a casual, pork-centric feast!

(NOTE: Mala, Rosé sauces are additional for ~ $2.99) Cheese add on was not worth the value, and the fish cake soup was just OK. Just get the rice cakes (especially the wheat flour ones).
