We had space to dance, act a fool, and just enjoy each other before the crowd came in. Once people started trickling in, the energy picked up in the best way. The DJ was doing their thing all night. We were dancing, singing like it was karaoke without the mic, and just having a genuinely good time. The drinks were good, and the whole vibe just felt easy and fun. Nothing forced. We even spent some time outside watching people play Jenga, which was way more entertaining than it should have been. I have heard mixed reviews about Pearl, especially about the crowd, but I can only speak on my experience. This past Saturday? It was a whole vibe. I have been before and it did not hit like this, but this time definitely did. Pearl is officially back in my rotation.

It has the vibe when you step in that what's going on in the world pauses, a place to unwind, and just about everyone you run into in these types of spots are laid back looking for that same soul in a bar. If you're the type that wants packed, lively and busy, this ain't it (aside from big sports events). The original D&T icehouse first opened in the 1960s and closed in 2012. Then after acquisition and renovation, reopened in May 2013. There's been changing of ownership in that time, but the spirit of what this bar has been about remains. There is a parking lot across the settees and you can generally find parking around the place, which is always nice when you're just seeking to catch up with some friends and watch a game. To that end, the bar is long with a good amount of seating, there's also tables throughout and a large patio, mostly covered, if you have a pet or care to take in some sunshine. They typically have fans running in the summer and some heaters in the cooler months. There are TVs throughout which always have at least one sports event on. They are typically open in the afternoon and close around midnight aside from the weekends, when they stay open later. Food & Drink - 4.25* They have a solid selection of craft beer on tap, a good amount of local brewers, which is great. They also carry a selection of canned beer as well. There is a full bar if you are looking for something a little stronger or are not a fan of beer. As for food, it's a bit more of a roll of the dice. This has changed with time, but generally there's pop up vendors that will visit. You are also welcome to DoorDash or bring whatever you like in as well. Service - 4.25* Ive never had any trouble going into the bar and getting service. They don't have servers in the traditional sense, it's your typical dive bar where you want something, go get it at the bar. On occasion you'll have someone come out and grab an empty glass and they may ask if you want anything. Cost - 4.75* Always subjective but getting some good craft beer at a typical tap price is about as simple as it gets. There's a few that could be adjusted but I've never noticed anything too out of market norms. Overall - 4.5* The only knock I would give D&T over other nearby neighborhood bars in the area is the fact there is a more consistent food setup at most of the others - whether that is in house food or a good rotation of pop-ups. That said, this neighborhood "dive" bar offers just about everything I want in a spot. Local beer, great patio space, plenty of tables for friends or family, local sports, and non-pretentious vibes for those who tend to prefer being away from the massive crowds.

Buried Seeds was the PERFECT little stop before dinner!…read more After visiting The Reading Room across the street, we walked over to Buried Seeds, a Black-owned wine bar, for a glass of wine before heading to dinner. This was part of a first date, and it was exactly the kind of place you want for that in-between stop--intimate, relaxed and just enough of a vibe to sit, sip and have some good conversation. I ordered one of their rosés (something with "Pink" in the name because apparently remembering drink names is not my ministry), and my date had the Prosecco. Both were really good, and it was the perfect amount for us to enjoy a glass and spend a little more time talking before dinner. But let's talk about this BREAD! We ordered the toasted bread and butter, and you can tell this isn't somebody pulling pre-sliced bread out of a bag. I actually watched a fresh loaf being unwrapped, sliced and put into the toaster oven. The bread itself was beautiful and tasted really good. It was served with honey butter and two different jams. I'm not much of a jam girl, so that honey butter had my FULL attention--and it was delicious! My only critique is that after our bread came out of the toaster oven, it sat for a while as a couple of other food orders were prepared. By the time it made it to us, it was no longer warm. With fresh toasted bread and honey butter, temperature makes a difference! Had it been served immediately while it was still warm, I think it would have taken something that was already good and made it GREAT. Other than that one small thing, I loved everything about Buried Seeds. The service was wonderful, we enjoyed the conversation at the bar, the space was beautiful--even the bar stools caught my attention! It just felt warm, comfortable and welcoming. In my opinion, the bartending staff appeared to make assumptions about who they believed would or wouldn't tip based on appearance, and I found that incredibly disappointing. My guest and I waited roughly 20 minutes just to get a single drink while multiple bartenders spent time talking among themselves. When we were finally acknowledged, the service we received was noticeably different from the experience of other customers seated nearby, who were greeted promptly, checked on frequently, and treated with a much higher level of attentiveness. What makes this especially frustrating is that I was a bartender while I was in college many years ago. I understand the service industry, I understand that tip-based jobs can be unpredictable, and I also understand that not every guest tips the same. Some leave 20% or more, some don't, and that's simply part of the profession. Personally, I always tip well above the industry standard because I've been on the other side of the bar. The problem is that it's not a bartender's job to decide, before serving someone, who is or isn't worth their time based on how they look or how they're dressed. Every guest deserves the same respect, courtesy, and level of service. Great hospitality means giving everyone a fair experience and letting your service--not assumptions--determine the outcome. I also think about the couples who work 60-hour weeks and only get one date night a month. Imagine finally getting that one evening together, looking forward to relaxing, only to have the experience soured because someone behind the bar decided you didn't look like you'd tip enough to deserve good service. That's a pretty disheartening and disrespectful way to treat paying customers. I sincerely hope management reminds the staff that exceptional service should be consistent for everyone, regardless of first impressions. Until then, I'll be taking my business elsewhere.

The second note is it's very common to have to present an ID at these types of sports bars so make sure you have it on ya! This venue has a decent layout but there are some areas that are not great. Particularly the tables near the bar where one has to line up to order. Alot of people will queue up in this area which becomes tiresome if you're sitting at these select tables. It's just a poor location to have placed the primary spot for folks to order and I feel this could easily be corrected (having owned a bar myself). The outdoor patio has a fair amount of deck chairs and patio tables, some uncovered, others under an overhang. This can make for a bit of trouble if it's a rainy day. The space is decently sized with enough TVs to catch the main events. This leads me to service. There are no roving servers so this effectively means one has to queue up and wait to place their order. This is what I like to call adding "friction" to the point of sale. This bar is hit and miss with queue times. They can have the same amount of bartenders and sometimes it's quick, other times you could be standing there a good amount of time. This means you're missing out on conversation with friends or looking for the tv that has the event you're interested in while you wait. All of these types of struggles could be remedied with changing how they operate. This typically isn't too large of an issue on a normal night but it definitely is on event days / weekends. The bathrooms can get pretty messy at times too (at least for men). I've never asked the ladies I come here with how their side is but I'd certainly hope it's better. Now, that leads to food and drink. Food is limited with vendors that come in and serve whatever. Crawfish, bbq, hot dogs, burgers, etc. Their website and socials will list these sometimes though they are not always up to date. For drinks, don't come here looking for any decent cocktails or wine selection. Sure, they can make basic ones or have some basic wines but it's limited. This is a liquor/mixer and beer type bar where speed/volume is the focus for the bartenders. Overall, I don't dislike this Little Woodrow's location as it is a bit more low key than some of the others but it comes with some considerations too. I will say, I do like that they tend to have more main events than other spots nearby and the vibe isn't nearly as off-putting as some of the others.
