Remember the -old- D&T? The one that served a dollop of pimento cheese with ritz crackers and charged like $10? Yeah, it was ok but nothing special, right? Well, the new D&T menu is freakin great! We tried all but a few items when we went there last night with some friends, and everything was delicious. We didn't realise that it was their first night serving their new menu, so I didn't think to take a picture of it, sorry! They have elote that was so yummy we had to order seconds, a few fancy sandwiches, street tacos, and quesadillas. Perfect to make a meal of it just snack on while drinking. Also German potato salad and fried cauliflower, also good! All the servers were super nice, and they have lots of beers and wines, of course. It's still everything you liked about D&T before, but new and improved with the food and staff. Like D&T 2.0! read more

An amazing experience every time you come. We come multiple times per week with our teen daughter (who will actually hang out with her parents at this place). The drinks are draft drinks (and I don't usually drink draft drinks). So the drinks are great BUT... the food is amazing. @Mortuary BBQ shows up with food and it's over the top. I live around D&T and when I smell the food I show up to get dinner. An excellent hang out for any night or a families night. read more

A much needed update. I'll try not to ramble too much... The last few years of Treadsack ownership here, I should have updated to a 1 star, as the bar became pathetic as many of the people that worked to make this place great and unique left for various reasons. I'll refrain from going into detail, but I will never go into a Treadsack owned place again. Anyway, D&T changed ownership a while back, and at least one more time since. Along with taking down the iconic original sign for some reason, blah. They tried being a coffee shop/beer bar for a while. That never really took off. They are back to being just a bar with beer. With more trivia nights, and they push more sporting events than I remember. No more regular food menu. They now use Eddy O's BBQ as a stand in. With mostly stuff on the weekends and a steak night. I have always found Eddy O's good, if not great BBQ, and food is only at certain times. Beer selection is all Houston area, which is great but lost a little from its peak which was always unique stuff from the likes of Unibroue or Weihenstephaner. Now, its still good, just that almost every spot in town with more than 5 tap handles have this selection. D&T has fallen out of my regular rotation for some time now, but since the Treadsack guys are out of the picture I do tend to have a drink once in a while. I'm a huge D&T fan and have been for years. Before we moved we went every week for frozen sangrias on steak night. Whenever friends come into town to visit this is a spot we'd take them to! Realized since then it changed ownership (we recently moved back). Happy to say its still got TJs ch and unsuspecting friends get a kick out of this unassuming treasure. Only complaint is it seems the frozen sangria doesn't hold as much of a punch. Would love to see this addressed, and if so we'd definitely be regulars again--no question. read more

I used to frequent D&T. I stopped going altogether them because of what self righteous assholes the Treadsack employees were. They were really rude to me and I went from going 2-8 times a month to zero for a few years. I'm so glad there's new owners! They're cool as hell and are obviously passionate about the local beer scene due to their knowledgeable recommendations and extensive local selections. It's also WAY dog friendlier! Driving down the street, I passed it up. The back patio is nice, covered with a lot of chairs and tables. Nights look fun. Our server was awesome- she could tell us everything about everything. The pulled pork nachos were the BOMB. The half order that was ordered was enough for two people. The pickled red onion is sweet, and crunchy. This Heights dive is cool. Tons of beer on tap (including lots of Texas beer) - they also have a couple of non-beer drinks for non-beer-drinkers: wine, sangria, and something else. They have daily happy hour specials - last night a great St. Arnold's was on the happy hour, so that's what I got! (But then when I discovered they had Lone Pint's Yellow Rose, I had to have that!) Their food is creative and good! I had the cauliflower grilled cheese sandwich - pretty delicious. Only thing keeping this place from being a five star is super picky - WHY would you put peanuts on elote??? Not great elote. There are lots of other vegetarian options! Starters: pimiento cheese and ritz cracks; beet pickled eggs; hose pickle plate, and smoked mushroom mousse. Entrees: beet salad, portobello grilled cheese, vegetarian nachos, kimchee nachos, and the smoked mushroom bowl. They don't have any pescatarian options - veggie or meat. The place itself is so cool, too. It might not look like a ton from the outside, but there's an indoor bar (that is open to the outdoor area in the back. The back has tons of long picnic tables, with tons of misting fans and twinkly lights! So cool. The staff is awesome. We sat outside for a bit and then went inside to catch the end of a baseball game. Our bartender forgot to add prosciutto to his meal. When we reminded him, a server took his plate back to the kitchen, added the prosciutto, brought it back, and comped the added prosciutto, which is normally a $3 addition. Hidden gem just off of I-45 North. Cool staff & great selection. We each ordered a brat special and shared the Dan & Ted's plate and I got a Frito Pie to put it (i.e. my caloric intake and cholesterol levels) all over the top. All were good. Cool little spot which (as expected) was quiet on a Monday night. It was kind of nice to have room to stretch out and the attention of the staff. They all know their craft well and were very helpful when we were deciding on what to order. The keep up the place well and that includes the (men's) restroom. Parking is available on the street. This also means the kitchen closed which is a bummer, as is the fact that they cut back on taps, but probably for the better as it was likely a lot to keep tabs on in the past under Treadsack. Not much else has changed though otherwise, still the awesome wooden bar and the patio out back is quite roomy. I've been here a few times but it's usually to participate in one of their TV/Movie themed trivia nights. I've seen the place packed to the rafters for a Parks and Rec trivia night were it seemed to be bonkers crazy busy and then I saw the opposite for the Wayne's World trivia night that felt like barely anyone was there. The food is pretty good especially considering it is a bar. The burger is simple and delicious. There are occasionally food trucks around so if you're in the mood for something that is not on the food menu you might be able to get it from a food truck parked up front. The only reason I knocked a star off is because the service when they were busy was pretty slow and they didn't seem prepared for the onslaught of trivia participants. It took a long time to wait for a simple drink but any other time I have been back, the service and atmosphere has been wonderful. read more

This place definitely falls in the "dive bar" category but it delivers a good variety of beers! It has a good ambiance with a classic "chill" vibe, I definitely like it. The beer menu is extensive with beers from lots of local breweries and if beer isn't something you're crazy about, they offer frozen sangria (awesome and strong) and a shandy drink. Their food menu is just ok. They have burgers, sandwiches and different types of apps that you can share. During the week, they usually offer dinner specials too, ex: Taco Tuesday etc etc. On our first visit, we had a burger and their taco plate (part of their daily special) and it was just ok. To me both dishes were over priced for what you get. My advice would be to come here to enjoy their beer menu and maybe grab a bite to eat at a different spot afterwards. During each visit, the employees were very nice and talkative to the peeps sitting at the bar and they usually have good music playing. The inside is a bit small. They have a good amount of seats at the bar and a few tables inside but they also have a spacious ,nicely lit patio. During the winter months they put heaters out to keep their patrons toasty. Parking usually isn't a problem since they have a parking lot directly across the street but I have seen it get full at times. To sum it up, this place is really cool and is a gem of the neighborhood, I would have rated 4 stars but with the lackluster food, I had to give it a 3 star rating. read more

I finally had a chance to check out this place. There's a small lot off Calvalcade and street parking. The sign out front is vintage, but when you step inside, it's a casual, contemporary atmosphere. Relatively small indoor area with a long counter and a few tables, but the outdoor patio is where it's at. It was warm when I went and there were plenty of fans and misters to keep you cool. I went to check out happy hour and steak night with a few friends. I was intrigued because I had just learned about shandys from an Aussie coworker. Their shandy, a cocktail of beer and lemonade, was delicious. They grill your steak made to order and then you make your plate with your own salad, baked potato, and their selection of condiments. I thought the food was fine, I would love to try other stuff on the menu. The staff is great, friendly, doesn't hover. Accepts credit cards. Great place for a drink and fancier bar food. I went for my first steak night at D &T Drive Inn - GREAT first experience. Atmosphere: The patio in the back was awesome. It wasn't overly packed for a Tuesday and although we shared a long picnic table with other people, it wasn't annoying at all! From the outside in front you really can't tell how awesome the back is until you walk into the place. It's not close to anything else but the patio is something I'll definitely go back for!! Food: Get the shandy drink - you'll need it to cool off in this Houston weather and it's delicious. I had 2. We went on steak night so we obviously had.... steak :) I ordered the new york strip medium but it was a little overcooked. Still had great flavor though. The steak comes with a potato and a salad. There is a little potato fixings bar that was a wonderful surprise so I obviously loaded up my potato so it was more of bacon and sour cream with a side of potato but whatevvvvv (don't judge me). Service: We didn't really have one waitress the whole time but both of them were not as attentive as they could've been. I really like D&T! Drinks, food, atmosphere, people - they're all good! I went once in the winter and they had a super yummy spiked hot apple cider. But on a regular basis I like the frozen shandy/sangria thing and the darker beers. Also the sandwich with the grape relish is amazing. The outside seating has such a perfect Heights feel to it. Found a new favorite bar in Houston! It's kind of tucked away in a residential area in the Heights, and I never would've found it without the help of the Internet. I loved their frozen shandy (beer + lemonade), although the frozen sangria was a little too sweet my taste. Their beer menu is impressive with a good mix of Texan and out-of-state craft brews -- and the prices are very, very reasonable. I also got to try their kimchi nachos, which was pretty damn delicious (thought I was in for a little snack, then ended up finishing the gigantic plate mostly by myself). Their food menu is a bit more pricey ($11-15), but the portion size is huge. Oh, did I mention their service is also very excellent? The bar spacy is a bit divey. Very chill, unassuming space. We were completely sold by the idea of frozen sangrias and those babies did not disappoint. $6 each, served in mason jars, and packing quite a punch! I really dig D&T Drive Inn. It's my local neighborhood bar within walking distance. A nice selection of craft and local beers on tap but my heart belongs to their shandy. I love, love, love this drink! It's simultaneously tart and sweet and extremely refreshing on a warm day. It makes my body curl up in bliss when I drink it! It's typically served with bitters on top, but they do seasonal offerings of this drink. My favorite (and I mean FAVORITE) is with blueberry during the summer! The bar is situated both inside and outside. During the summer, inside is my preferred way to go, but I have noticed that due to the open arrangement, I've gotten bitten by mosquitoes. If you're special enough to be bitten all the time, I'd definitely recommend some bug spray before you go. D&T also a jukebox with great tunes on it. There are also warm nuts that you can help yourself to! Bartenders and bussers are polite and friendly. Bathrooms are clean and tidy. One complaint: I'm not impressed with their food. I ordered their pulled pork nachos, and it was unimpressive. It came out with thick yellow corn rounds topped with really bland Velveeta-like cheese, black beans that tasted like they were poured out of a can, pickled red onions, and jalapenos. The pulled pork was actually flavorful, but paired with the other ingredients, it just wasn't tasty, was overly salty, and seemed a bit pricey. And selfishly speaking, I wish that they'd serve a burger on their menu! But when I come here, it's not about the food. It's about the ambiance and drinks (or in my case, SHANDY SHANDY SHANDY)!
