Somehow I've never been here before, which is crazy, since like all middle aged white guys, I went deep down a Bourbon hoarding rabbit hole for a time. If you're a bourbon guy, they have some excellent bottles! Like I said, it was a brief visit so I'm not going to write y'all a novel, but the interior was dark lit, velvet soaked, and relaxed. Great bar Met some friends here after dinner. They were packed and boomin when we arrived. Dj set up right behind us and got the night started right. Even though the place was completely full, the service was still quick and really good. They brought out more chairs to accommodate our growing party and we never had to wait long for drinks. After about an hour, we slid through the back door and into the speakeasy. This portion of the bar was equally impressive and had the same high end vibe. More great service, more great drinks. We met another couple here for cocktails and a few appetizers and immediately liked the atmosphere. The place is beautiful, the music is set just right for conversation, and I was told there is a members only area in the back, which gives it a little extra character. I ordered the crab ceviche, oysters, the Vitamin Sea, and the Gold Rush. The crab ceviche was the standout! It had generous lump crab, and was very fresh, and full of flavor. Came here for a little night cap after a dinner date nearby. Permission Whiskey & Service has been on my short list of cocktail bars to try and glad I got the chance to cross it off my list. Permission is located off White Oak. If you know the area, you know that parking is challenging up and down this street. We decided to leave the car at our first spot and take a stroll over here. It was a weekend so the place was busy. We were lucky enough to be seated pretty quickly in a cozy booth in the corner. This place is very nice inside and out. It's got this whole classy, grown up vibe to it that I do appreciate. I really like the back lit bar displaying their huge variety of spirits. Customer service was great from start to finish. They had a great knowledge of all their offerings which is impressive considering how much they have. I am by no means a whiskey expert so that part is lost on me. My friends are so this is a great spot for the whiskey enthusiasts. One drink that I thoroughly enjoy and one of my most ordered is an old fashioned. It's a timeless classic that almost all bartenders can execute nicely. I just ordered the Permission Old Fashioned which is made with Makers. It was very good. Drinks here are on the pricey side, but it seems to be the norm for this type of establishment around town. They have a pretty good cocktail list, but also serve wine, champagne, and beer. They also sell cigars which is cool. If you get a little hungry, they do have light bites like charcuterie boards, caviar, etc. Overall, Permission made a great first impression on me. stopped by for happy hour. it had been a minute since I had an old fashioned and it did not disappoint. can't beat $10 drinks. the carajillo was a nice spin on an espresso martini. weather was perfect so we sat outside. I stopped by Permission on a Tuesday night with some friends after a Yelp event nearby. They have a tiny parking lot out front, however street parking wasn't an issue as it was pretty late in the evening. Since it was a Tuesday, we were able to walk in and be seated immediately. Reservations are recommended on the weekends and they only take reservations via IG. Gabriel was our server. My friend ordered a drink that was named for him. My other friend had an Old Fashioned while I had a Northside. My drink was very refreshing and balanced. We did not have any food, but they offer small plates and charcuterie. They have cigars as well as private lockers. They also have a VIP table that can be reserved in advance. The decor is beautiful and the ambiance is dark and sultry. This is a great spot for a date night. I've had Permission on my craft cocktail bar list for a while and it did not disappoint! read more

I love visiting the White Oak area as it's close to my home and I appreciate that Permission is different than most of the other bars in the area. I do feel that Permission tries to appear as very exclusive and only for the elite whereas it's just another bar that happens to have an elegant ambiance and higher priced drinks. For exclusivity, they do have their members only speakeasy which I do think it a cool vibe and elevates the bar. I've now been here twice, once for Valentine's Day and again for a birthday party. For Valentine's Day, the menu didn't clearly dictate shots vs drinks and the bartenders kept having to clarify for the group when people were ordering shots (which was not our vibe for the evening). It made for some good laughs but clarity on the menu would've been great. For the second visit, I ordered the "it hits different" and to be honest it was pretty bad. I wasn't able to take more than two sips and also wasn't able to pawn it off onto friends as after trying it... they also didn't want it. The old fashioned also didn't seem to be up to the standard of the first time and no one drank that either. We'll definitely be back but will be trying different drinks next time! What a fun little place! We came here after having dinner at Ume and glad we stopped by. Parking is eh, kinda a headache, but since we went to dinner next door, we had already found street parking. Service was awesome. I felt very catered to and everyone was very nice. Manager walked by several times to check on us, and that was awesome hospitality. Bathrooms are also very clean. The atmosphere is lively, and during peak hours it can get quite noisy, but in a good way Like the bar itself, the rest of the decor, fixtures, and upholstery are swanky and well thought out The bartenders are skilled craftsman, and each cocktail is a work of art. Not only are they excellent bartenders, but they're also well versed in whiskeys, and will answer your every question These aren't bottom shelf cocktails, so, expect to pay a little more, but it's well worth it Some tips: Parking isn't ideal, so, consider using a ride share. If you're feeling like hoping to other bars, there are quite a few within a couple minutes walking distance. There is also a special membership that will cost you ~$1,200, and you can go to a special back room speakeasy where they keep some of the more rare and fancy whiskeys. Very nice Art Deco bar. A good amount of inside seating and some outside seating for cigar smoking. Parking is a pain for this area in general. Staff was professional and friendly. We sampled a few house cocktails from the menu and a few of their sessional cocktails. I will not go in to great detail about all the drinks, just know that everything we had was nicely crafted and well balanced. A word on the drink prices. Honestly, not bad. Most of there drinks are a few $ cheaper than most bars and restaurants in the Heights, many of their cocktails are made with even higher quality liquor. Example; Walker black instead of red, or Makers 46. We did not sample any of the food, but all the boards look good. I will say if I lived in the area this would be a regular spot for me to stop. I visited Permission for my first time on November 11, 2025 I came for an event, and decided to arrive a little early to catch Happy Hour A group of men were on the patio when I walked up, smoking cigars I walked in, and had a seat at the corner of the bar I started things off with an Old Fashioned. I'm fond of big ice cubes. I followed this up with an Espresso Martini. Bailey's helps smooth things out. A new member of the group I visited with bought me a Ranch Water. I returned the favor by buying a Margarita. I had a dozen oysters on the half shell. Found they paired much better with the vinegar than the cocktail sauce. Nice napkins here! I also snacked on a charcuterie board. Mustard with the whole seeds in it. The group thinned out, and I was pretty happy to call it a night. As I wandered out to the patio, I heard someone call my name: it was Zach, one of the folks who'd served me during my visit. Made a reservation via instagram for our date night and the response was very fast. We were very excited to try this place out after so many friends have recommended. We had no wait to be seated but once seated we received no service until we had to flag someone down. Not sure why nobody bothered to service us since there was not a single thing on our table. We just watched our surrounding tables get visited and a new party get helped before us. Very disappointed in the lack of awareness at an establishment like this where my expectations were set high. When we flagged someone down to take our drink order and place a few orders for small bites-- we just got the vibe that they were annoyed that we asked who is servicing our table. Just go get the drink ! So my good girlfriend and I popped in here on a Saturday at 7pm no reservation - sat at the bar . We took an uber .. yall know how parking is in Houston ... terrible . Same here. there's a small lot on site, but it fills quickly you'll need to valet or find street parking There was a small crowd but still plenty of seating at 7pm. The crowd started to build around 8:30-9pm. By that time I was leaving I ordered a gin martini with an herbal infusion (that's exactly what I told the bartender I wanted ) and he did not disappoint! It was so good! My friend tried 2-3 of their crafted old fashions and she loved it . Bartender was sooo nice and inviting, made my first experience here worth it and because of that I will return. My fiancé and I visited Permission Whiskey on a Friday evening and sat at the bar. Shortly after sitting down, the bartender, Mason, asked for a card to keep on file, which I provided. We each ordered one drink, which should have totaled around $30. Partway through our visit, an older gentleman sat beside us and began making casual conversation. When it was time to close out our tab, I was shocked to see a total of $52.04--much higher than what we had ordered. When I asked about the discrepancy, Mason informed me that he had added the other gentleman's drinks to my tab because he "assumed" we were together. As anyone who frequents bars knows, it's standard for a bartender to clarify--"Are these together?"--before adding drinks to a customer's bill. Mason did not ask, took no accountability, and didn't even offer a genuine apology for the mistake. When I requested to speak to a manager, Zach Haag eventually came over--but instead of addressing me directly from the start, he first spoke to Mason to hear his side. Zach then voided the incorrect charge and said he'd re-run the correct total. However, when I checked my bank account moments later, I discovered that both charges had gone through--the incorrect $52.04 and the corrected amount, meaning I was charged $82.04 for two drinks. Because it was a Friday night, I now have to wait until Monday for the refund to process--an inconvenience caused entirely by their error. There was no ownership, no real apology, and no effort to make things right. This experience was extremely disappointing, unprofessional, and disrespectful to paying customers. I will not be returning and plan to escalate this further with ownership or upper management. If you value honesty, good service, and basic customer care, I strongly recommend spending your money and time elsewhere. read more
