Potential customers: ask the owner these questions before trusting this company with your vehicle. A transparent and ethical business owner should have no problem answering reasonable questions about how the company operates. If the owner avoids the questions, changes the subject, or refuses to explain the company's policies, potential customers can draw their own conclusions. Our experience involves my wife's Mercedes being transported from New Jersey to California. We are paying good money for professional cross-country vehicle transportation. The delivery estimate has changed repeatedly. Delays can happen because of traffic, weather, mechanical problems, routing, and other circumstances. The bigger problem for us has been communication and accountability. When we call asking where the Mercedes is, we have been told that the company will contact the driver and find out. On multiple occasions, we then did not receive the promised follow-up. We have also been told to communicate directly with the driver ourselves. That raises some very basic questions I believe the owner should answer publicly: 1. Are you simply a broker who finds a carrier, or do you take responsibility for managing the customer's shipment through delivery? 2. Once the vehicle has been picked up, does your company have a system for determining where it currently is? 3. If a customer calls asking for the location of their vehicle, can your office contact the carrier or dispatcher and obtain that information? 4. Why should a customer who paid your company have to repeatedly chase the truck driver for basic status information? 5. When an employee promises, "We will find out and call you back," what is your policy when that follow-up does not happen? 6. When an estimated delivery date changes multiple times, does your company proactively notify the customer? 7. Who is responsible for communicating with the customer--the broker, carrier, dispatcher, or driver? 8. If the driver does not answer, what process does your company have for locating the vehicle and obtaining an update? 9. Can customers receive the name, USDOT/MC information, and insurance information for the carrier actually transporting their vehicle? 10. What exactly does your brokerage service include after the vehicle has been picked up? 11. What system do you have to prevent customers from being left wondering where an expensive vehicle is while it is traveling thousands of miles across the country? 12. Most importantly, once you accept a customer's business and arrange transportation, what responsibility does your company accept for that customer until the vehicle is delivered? I am not asking the company to guarantee that transportation delays will never happen. That would be unreasonable. I am asking the owner to explain how his company handles communication, tracking, follow-up, and accountability when delays do happen. My wife entrusted this company with her Mercedes for transportation across the country. We expect reasonable status updates and professional communication--not repeated delivery changes followed by the customer having to chase the driver to find out what is happening. Before doing business with Sonic Auto Transportation, I recommend interviewing the company first. Ask these questions and let the owner answer them publicly. We purchased a vehicle from an auto dealership in OH, to ship to Orange County, CA. There was definitely a learning curve in the auto-transport process, but now understand why I read so many reviews about quoting one-price, then paying another: The auto broker quotes a price based on similar prior routes. Different brokers quote different prices, but they ALL go on a central board. Drivers look at the board, and decide which vehicles they want to pick up, depending on a variety of factors, such as demand, space, and route. Clearly, the lower the price, the least attractive your vehicle is to them. Original quotes to move our vehicle ranged from $1,100-$4,200 between different auto brokers. We accepted Sonic's quote of $1,350. After a week of waiting for a driver to pick up our vehicle at $1,350, I increased our price to $1,900. We waited a couple more days, and still no driver picked it up. It was then that I realized that we were never going to ship our car for $1,350. It wouldn't have done any good to switch to another broker, since they all use the same centralized system. I finally accepted a price of $2,500 to ship our car--$1,150 more than our originally quoted price. However, it's important to know that Sonic (or any auto broker) does not set the price. The market sets the price. You might get lucky and a driver wanting to fill his last spot might pick up your vehicle for a low price--but that wasn't our experience. In the end, we didn't pay the lowest of all the quotes, but we didn't pay the highest, either. As far as the shipping goes, they took detailed photos of every angle of the vehicle upon pickup, and upon dropoff. They sent me a copy of the auto transporter's Certificate of Insurance. No one stayed in contact with me, however everyone (broker and transport) always answered their phones when I wanted a status update. They were professional, and delivered our vehicle perfectly. Once we agreed on a price, that was the price. They charged us $650 on a credit card at the time of booking, and the rest was paid in cash, Venmo, Cashier's Check, or Zelle. There was never any question of the driver asking for more money, or any other questionable practice. Our vehicle was a Ford F-350 XL, so we wondered if there would be a delivery "surcharge" for gas or size, due to the weight and length. There wasn't. Once I understood that they didn't change the price on me, but rather use an under-bidding tactic to get my business, I didn't really blame them. I was going to pay $2,500 to ship my vehicle all-along, and I just had to understand the process. I would use Sonic again. Albert was patient with me, and I know that I was annoying with a million questions. Not sure that I would buy a car out-of-state again, but if I do, I would not hesitate to use Sonic. I needed a car shipped from a used car dealership in Florida to my home in Indiana. If you don't know how vehicle shipping works, here's a primer: You don't normally deal with the shipping company/driver directly. You work with a broker who will give you the estimated cost of the job. When you accept their "offer", you pay a small down payment ($100?) and the broker posts your job for that price on a website (Central Dispatch) that all the shipping companies look at. Hopefully, a company accept the job at the price that your broker posted. If the price is too low, the shipping company will contact the broker and tell them "We will do this job for 'X' dollars instead". If you have a shady broker, they will accept the job at the new, higher price and wash their hands of the whole situation. That's where you hear the horror stories of drivers arriving at customers' homes and telling them they owe hundreds of dollars more than what the customer originally agreed to. If you have a good broker, they will first contact you to let you know that the price has changed and ask if you will accept the new price. That is exactly what happened to me with Sonic Auto. My job manager, Harper Jade, initially said that he could get my car to Indiana for $700. He said the deposit would be $250 and I gave him my credit card info. He posted my job on Central Dispatch and then I immediately started getting text messages from shipping companies that said "We saw that you need to have your car shipped from Florida to Indiana. No company will accept the job at the price posted. We can transport your car for $1600. Is that OK?" Of course that was not OK so I told them all to pound sand. I was going to hold out for a better price. A few hours later, Harper called me and said that a company accepted the job for $750. He was very apologetic about the price increase (from $700 to $750), but that was the best he could negotiate with the shipping company. I was grateful that he was able to get a price close to the original estimate. However, I reminded him that I had a $50 off coupon for messaging Sonic Auto on their Instagram page. Harper said because I had the coupon, the price was back down to the original $700. The driver picked up my vehicle the next afternoon and it arrived a few days later. The only breakdown in communication was that when the driver arrived with the vehicle, he asked for more than the $450 I thought I owed ($700 minus the $250 deposit). He said he needed $600. Confused, I contacted Harper via text and immediately got a response. It turned out that Sonic Auto only charged me a $100 deposit instead of $250 (without telling me about the reduced deposit). That's why the driver was owed $600. Fortunately, I had enough cash on hand to pay the difference. read more

Bummer of a situation. Needed to transport car from NY to CA, so my dad starts helping me find possible shipping companies, that's how we found sonic. We were quoted 1200 to ship my packed car, everything goes through: deposit, text confirmation a few days before, etc. Morning of, I get a text from the driver telling me he can't pick up my car anymore due to a payment issue from another dealership. Frustrating, and if you're a planner or doing any type of major move it's even more so when you call the broker (in my case Fred) only for them to tell me they see now that they have a missed call from the driver. After I was told he was informed of the situation and working on it (if I hadn't called right away it wouldn't have been on the company's radar for who knows how long). Anyways, quote went from 1200 to 2000 with the idea that this new guy would be here the following day to pick up the car. What guarantees this dude shows up if the last guy could back out so easily? So much stress and hassle. Ended up looking elsewhere for last minute help. Do yourselves a favor and whatever dealership you got your car from, CALL THEM to see who they recommend for this stuff. They collected our personal information and assured us that price was locked in. We were also told we could transport up to 100 lbs. of personal belongings inside the vehicle. After being connected with a representative named Christian, we were informed that the original quote and the information we had been given were incorrect. He then tried to charge us more than double the original price. US DOT 3437626 MC 1115582 I worked with a broker at sonic-auto named Christian Woods, mostly however it turned out all the emails were done by his "assistant" Michelle. She went above and beyond to secure me great deal to tow my 5th wheel camper 550 miles on Dec 29th. I was wondering it sounded too good to be true at $845 with the cost of diesel in california. The first driver cancelled the morning of 29th, so he found another driver on the day of transport, this time at $1,500. He told me he would send me the driver's phone so I can have contact with him, and that the driver could be there in 2-3 hours at 11AM. 4 hours later I have heard nothing yet, sitting there packed and ready to go, so I called another driver and got my RV towed. by 7pm that night the Sonic driver texted me he is having truck trouble after i called and spoke to Michelle, his "assistant" and she contacted the driver. I emailed and called this Christian Woods to cancel the contract, never heard back despite asking him for confirmation of the cancellation, which he never did. I have been on the road busy with this transport situation for 5 days now with little sleep, and today was the first time I had a moment to log into my credit card. Guess what, they charged me that $550 on the 30th December like Kings of Deception and Fraud. I emailed to have it reversed and have not heard back. Off to better business bureau and law enforcement I go. EDIT 5 Jan 2026: The "owner" Alex is under the impression that the driver's information was sent to me, it never was. I kept texting and emailing and later called, but there was no driver. Late in the day somebody texted they were having truck trouble. the deposit is supposed to be charged AT PICK_UP when the driver hooks up your vehicle, not the next day after ZERO service was performed. Notice ITEM C in the contract .... its VERY clear, and now Alex is Lying because no driver ever contacted me for pickup that day, no driver showed up, nothing. NO SERVICE WAS PERFORMED. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Deposit Due Upon Pickup Upon the vehicle being picked up by the Carrier, the deposit amount shall become immediately due and payable. The Customer hereby authorizes Broker to charge the credit card on file for the deposit amount at that time. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- So now the "owner" Alex gets to literally redefine the English Language and redefine the actual meaning of English words as the wording of his own contract doesn't suit his ego. Due to a last-minute cancellation by the originally assigned driver, we were unable to secure transportation --- It was THEIR FAULT The LAST MINUTE Cancellation yea. IN his Own Words. 2. rate was higher than expected --- Next best thing due to THEIR LAST MINUTE Cancellation ... 3. we immediately sent you the driver's contact information --- Never happened, i in fact nagged and nagged for hours to get it, to no avail 4. While the driver arrived later than planned, the pickup was confirmed, and the assignment was secured, which fulfilled our responsibilities under the signed contract --- Uhhhhmmmm ... yea no. Nothing was "Secured" until and unless that driver showed up and hooked up my rv. He never even contacted me, and I was NOT given that driver's information and the penultimate arrogance after THEIR OWN LAST MINUTE CANCELLATION AND CONTRACT RENEGOTIATION AT HIGHER RATE to make the deposit almost as much as the original contract .... ..... Contract says one thing, Alex decides its once the driver has been "assigned" ... that driver would be "assigned" and show up a week late for all he seems to be able to care. yea no Alex. I was told by Robin that vehicle pickup would be on a Friday, then I was told Monday and again I was told Tuesday. They wasted my time. Meanwhile the auction house stated they would start adding a fee of $50 per day. Sonic did nothing over three days, promising next day pickup. I incurred $125 in fees because of their disorganization. In addition, Robin said there was a change in price from the original $500 to $1,200. They just wasted time and bait-and-switch led on me. The driver and person who set it up for me were both very nice and kept me informed. I would use them again but know that the cost may be higher. The cars arrived and on time so that is the good part. The driver went above and beyond to make it happen - another good thing. Now the not-so-good: Unfortunately, although they had all the information about the types of cars being shipped, no one put a second of thought into whether they would fit on the trailer. My 1978 Spitfire is so narrow that it literally had half of each tire on the steel and we had to manually lift the back of the car to transition it from the ramp to the truck bed. Additionally, as noted by others, dispatch communication was non-existant after they got the deposit. The driver was late and no one would answer the phone. I have received more communication asking me to write a review than I was able to get as the scheduled pickup time came and went. The price was competitive. Chester from Sonic Auto is a fraud. We were quoted a price on March 13 to ship a car from NY to FL on May 5th. There was no phone call or text the day prior advising us a pick up time as we have been promised several times. After I texted Chester about six times asking what time the car would be picked up on May 5- yesterday - I received a lackluster apology stating that he had been with his family the day before and did not see my text messages. Whatever. Anyway, we did eventually get a message from the driver giving us a pick up time and also telling us we would be responsible for an additional $.90 per mile in fees for transporting the car, in addition to the flat rate we had agreed upon back in March.. Since this would more than double the original cost that we were quoted, I was flabbergasted. Since he knew he was about to lose a customer, Chester then backpedaled and reduced the hourly mileage charge by $.20. And then he tried to send me a new contract to sign. Again, far too shady as the price was just a little less than double of the original cost. We are not stupid and we are not desperate and if I could punish this thief shamster individual in a severe way, I would.
