It's been quite a while since we've visited Sonny's and now that they've recently remodeled, it was time for a comeback. This is your spot if the vibe you're looking for is family-style and laid-back BBQ without all the bells and whistles. The menu is concise and, I must preach, very decently priced. They have combo meals and bowls that are sure to please all tastes and appetites. Our group started with sharing their loaded tots topped with brisket and crispy onions. The tots were hot, crunchy and finished as quickly as they came to our table. Hubbs and I shared their 3-protein combo with jalapeño cheddar sausage, brisket and pulled pork, sided with baked beans, baked sweet potato and green beans. I love me some good BBQ but what's BBQ without sauce?! They have a solid selection from sweet heat to smoky to tart so you're bound to find one that suits your mood. Mine,l of course was the sizzlin sweet. It had a slight little dab of what I'd call Tabasco-level heat, which isn't much for me but is probably enough for most. And yes, I simply put that sh!z on everything. I also loved the slow-baked sweet potato that came wrapped in foil with all of its natural sweetness oozing out. For me, that's why it's a favored potato cause it doesn't need much else. However that honey butter they brought for it was the icing on the cake. This is the perfect $20 dish to share which makes it worth coming back again sooner rather than later. Especially if you're returning from the sandbar and can hit up their drive-thru on the way home. We went back to Sonny's as the recently reopened. The did a nice job in the Reno to the restaurant. Overall the food is good and reasonably priced. I would not say it's the best bbq in SFL but it's good. The service was really slow to start but at least once we ordered our meal that came out pretty quick. As someone with celiac disease, I had a great experience at Sonny's BBQ. They provided us with an allergy guide, which made it easy to know exactly what was safe to order. I was also happy to learn that all of the sauces available at the table are gluten-free. I ordered the brisket, sliced pork, baked potato, and dirty rice, and everything was absolutely delicious and full of flavor. My sister, who also has celiac disease, ordered the ribs with a sweet potato and broccolini, and she loved her meal as well. Most importantly, neither of us got sick after eating here. It's always a relief to find a restaurant that takes food allergies seriously and offers clear information for people with celiac disease. My family and I decided to dine here on 06-07-2026. They recently reopened after over a year closed due to a fire. We had dined here many times prior. We enjoy the good food and reasonable prices. BBQ still slaps and the sides always hit the spot. The updated venue is well lit and more open. We definitely enjoyed the updated space. It is a busy spot so keep that in mind when ordering. We always have a great time at Sonnys. It has a big open bar and alot of seating and it is always clean in there. The hostess and servers are always nice. You can order takeout from the front if you want or on their app. I always order their bbq salad with pulled pork. You can choose between their spicy, original, or sweet bbq (i always prefer a little kick so i do spicy). You also get to choose a Ken's dressing. Their pulled pork is tender and flavorful. I had a coupon for their egg rolls which were delicious-- pretty much tasted like philly cheese steak eggrolls. It comes with a chipotle dipping sauce, so good! My family of four drove almost an hour to visit Sonny's Barbecue in Florida City, and unfortunately, it was a very disappointing experience. We were seated and waited over 25 minutes without a single server coming to our table to greet us, take our drink order, or even acknowledge that we were there. During that time, I noticed several employees focused on cleaning tables and refilling the barbecue area, while other guests who were seated after us had their orders taken and even received their food. There were also plenty of open tables, so it didn't seem overly busy. A simple greeting or an apology for the wait would have gone a long way. Instead, we felt completely overlooked and ended up leaving without ever being served. Sadly, this was a horrible first impression, and I can't recommend this location based on our experience. read more

We waited 10 mins to be seated in a near empty restaurant. The food was so disgustingly fatty. part of my meal was brisket, not only was it fatty a piece of it was pure tripe. After I went to the bathroom, I realized there was no toilet paper in the stall. That was a horrible experience and the women's room had nothing to dry your hands with. a lady that was in bathroom with my girlfriend said well I guess I'll have to use the napkins at her table to dry her hands. I was so excited about the reopening of Sonny's! My husband and I stopped on 7/2 on our way down to the keys. It was late like 8pm and was greeted nicely and seated. We sat there at least 15 mins before a young man said someone will be with you in a min. Someone turned into no one . No acknowledgment from anyone walking by. The hostess did walked by but not a look. The place seamed like it got slammed prior to us so had a little grace for that . 20 mins went by still no acknowledgment. We decided to leave and got up very disappointed in the service. On our way out we let them know and probably won't be back! There was no manager walking around making sure things are running smoothly. That should be a must in a restaurant in my opinion or subject to fail. I have been enjoying Sonnys since 1977 in Gainesville FL, and lately the in Homestead Fl. Sonny's has become a disaster. They are now a food truck, but they do not say that when you order online for takeout. Their ribs were all fat and too greasy to eat. Some are excellent and some are terrible. This one fell closer to the bottom. Why???slow kitchen and bad cook's. The ribs were cut hours prior to serving and were dry. At least they replanted them with fresh BBQ sauce before they served them. Do not fall for the all you can eat ribs deal. Just order a full rack of ribs. They will serve you three ribs and it will take time to ask the server for more and then it will take the kitchen 15 minutes to bring you three more ribs. So you are looking at 25 minutes between getting three ribs and the next set of three ribs. Maddening. We just left after the second order. Not worth the wait. They win. Was in the mood for some BBQ and since I live reasonably close to Sonny's I decided to give it a try. Went with my wife and we were attended pretty quick as the place wasn't full. Service was ok though it took some time. The place inside is very nice and outside they have charging stations for Teslas which is a plus. We ordered the fried okra as appetizer which was nice and crispy. My wife had the BBQ Cobb Salad with brisket and I ordered the brisket platter. Her salad was huge!! My brisket platter was a nice portion with baked beans, Mac & Cheese and corn bread. I'm giving Sonny's 4 stars because the brisket had a good taste but lacked juiciness and seasoning, it was in the dry side. I would go back to try the other dishes from the menu. read more

It is nice to have close friends who drive down to meet up with you in Florida City while on vacation in West Palm Beach (originally hailing from Montana). Went directly to the "meat" of the lunch menu, Pitmaster Plates Pick 3 Combo... sizeable portions of sliced beef brisket, sweet n smoky ribs & smoked pork with coleslaw, garlic bread and BBQ beans. The last two accompanying sidekicks is a must try as garlic bread with BBQ beans is just mmmm. The Sonny's Cuban Sandwich was for me. I wanted something in between the Pick 3 Combo and wings. After sitting for a little bit we finally looked up to see if we could turn it off but they were too high to reach. Also the fans had so much dust on them that it was obvious that they hadn't been cleaned in quite awhile. Overall it wasn't the best chain bbq restaurant we have ever been too. With a little more cleanliness standards, this place would definitely be a 4 or 5 star. On the positive they are open much later than other places in the area. I downloaded the app and visited this Sonny's location on Sunday at Lunch. I placed a to-go order for a 1/4 chicken with two sides and garlic bread, with a glass of ice water. The tall, young guy at the register entered my order, and I asked if I could have a breast and a leg and he said "white and dark, sure I can tell them." I mentioned I downloaded the app for the $5 reward for new customers and he had no idea what I was talking about and had to look at my phone to read the offer and didn't even know what I needed to buy to qualify, although it said "entree". The offer is right on the door, which is where I saw it. He did not know how to enter the discount into the register so he asked the woman (manager, I assume) to help. I was asked in the screen the amount of tip I wanted to provide. I chose the "no tip" option after my register experience. After he placed my order, I never saw him mention to anyone that I requested a breast/leg. He also forgot my drink, so I asked if I could have it. He went over to get it and I noticed he said something to the young woman working and she looked over at me. He was clearly upset I didn't give him a tip. For what??? These entitled young people working in restaurants! SMH - They need to EARN a TIP. Go look up the definition of the acronym: "To Insure Promptness". After approx 10 minutes, a different young man handed me the bag with my order, I asked if it was a breast and a leg? He opened the box and clearly it was all dark meat with a thigh, which I hate, and a leg, I said, "that is a thigh, I was supposed to have a breast" and he said "it's a breast". There was no BBQ sauce on my chicken or in the bag and no one even asked if I'd like some for my chicken. This is a BBQ RESTAURANT, for goodness sakes!! I was not even given a choice of sides - I went with what the young guy, who clearly didn't care if he was there or not, entered on the order screen. The cole slaw was tasteless and had large pieces/chunks of inedible cabbage. Clearly straight out of a bag. You need to visit KFC for a lesson on slaw. The baked beans were the best part of the entire meal, the thigh and slaw went to waste. I lived in KC and know good BBQ and I would NEVER go back to this, or any other Sonny's restaurant, after yesterday's experience! read more
