Dirty rice with Beef Brisket and sliced pork

As someone with celiac disease, I had a great experience at Sonny's BBQ. They provided us with an allergy guide, which made it easy to know exactly what was safe to order. I was also happy to learn that all of the sauces available at the table are gluten-free. I ordered the brisket, sliced pork, baked potato, and dirty rice, and everything was absolutely delicious and full of flavor. My sister, who also has celiac disease, ordered the ribs with a sweet potato and broccolini, and she loved her meal as well. Most importantly, neither of us got sick after eating here. It's always a relief to find a restaurant that takes food allergies seriously and offers clear information for people with celiac disease. The portions were generous, the prices were fair, and we'll definitely be coming back!

My family and I decided to dine here on 06-07-2026. They recently reopened after over a year closed due to a fire. We had dined here many times prior. We enjoy the good food and reasonable prices. BBQ still slaps and the sides always hit the spot. The updated venue is well lit and more open. We definitely enjoyed the updated space. It is a busy spot so keep that in mind when ordering. You will need to be a little patient. Definitely one of our favorite BBQ spots down south.

We always have a great time at Sonnys. It has a big open bar and alot of seating and it is always clean in there. The hostess and servers are always nice. You can order takeout from the front if you want or on their app. I always order their bbq salad with pulled pork. You can choose between their spicy, original, or sweet bbq (i always prefer a little kick so i do spicy). You also get to choose a Ken's dressing. Their pulled pork is tender and flavorful. I had a coupon for their egg rolls which were delicious-- pretty much tasted like philly cheese steak eggrolls. It comes with a chipotle dipping sauce, so good! Can pretty much guarantee that anything you get here is going to be tasty and leave you feeling satisfied!

Thought we'd try this barbecue place for dinner. It was not too busy and quiet so we were able to sit right down. Waitress was friendly. Ordered our drinks and food. Portions are huge!! Everything was fresh and hot. We really enjoyed it. I got the loaded tots appetizer as my meal and couldn't finish it. My husband got the 4 meats meals with green beans and coleslaw. He said it was all very good and fresh. Definitely would recommend!!

    Soggy toast down the drain,

I have been enjoying Sonnys since 1977 in Gainesville FL, and lately the in Homestead Fl. Sonny's has become a disaster. They are now a food truck, but they do not say that when you order online for takeout. Their ribs were all fat and too greasy to eat. The Garlic toast was literally soaked in oil, the beans were not Sonny's traditional and hated artificial. Nothing about this location can be honestly called BBQ.

Not sure if it's because we are a large party 10 or more, or what? Our last visit was a Sunday evening in early July . We ate outside. Waiter was good at getting water out to everyone. But when it came to drink orders we must have waited 15-20 minutes for him to take our drink orders. I had to ask him to take my appetizer order. We had to ask several times for our drinks - soft drinks- not alcoholic. They were not good at cleaning our dirty appetizer plates away after delivering dinner leaving the table crowded. I think what I found most annoying was watching our server and another server standing around while we were waiting for drinks, for order taking, for refills, etc. There was just no attention being paid to us. Maybe the guy was new? Not sure. The restaurant wasn't very busy so that wasn't the excuse. I've heard it's difficult to get good help in the Keys. Cost a lot to live here. Most commute from Homestead. Anyway- good for the food - don't expect great service. Ironically I did over tip. I was a server in college so I try to be generous.

The interior is very nicely done with a good atmosphere. Not many people at all even though I was told it was booked out. More than 80% of the restaurant was empty. To start we got the Brioche rolls and the truffle potatoes. The rolls were very good with the honey butter definitely recommend. The potatoes are a bit hit or miss as it's not coated well so you'll get some pieces that taste great and some that are just plain potato. Definitely think they should toss these a bit better or add more sauce as they become quite dry. The pieces that are coated do have a good flavor. Before our appetizers we also got a "Margarita" pizza. I say "Margarita" because I would equate this more to just a cheese pizza. It's quite greasy and has some flop to it. It definitely was a decent pizza just think they need to lighten up on the cheese, add a bit more basil, and add some tomato. For our meals my wife got the Cacio E Pepe and I got the 72 hour beef burger with egg and truffle. She said the pasta was okay but nothing special the actual pasta was not typical Cacio e Pepe. She wouldn't recommend it. The burger for me was the breaking point. I actually had really high hopes for this as it seemed like a highlight of their menu. I added the black truffle and egg which was a $18 up charge as well. Upon getting the burger it actually looked pretty good. The fries were a bit cold but wasn't a big deal as we already had a ton of carbs. I cut the burger in half to check the cross section and upon doing so it immediately started falling apart. I noticed it had some stringy beef almost like braised beef on it. Apparently it was "beef bacon" but to us it looked like braised beef. Nevertheless even though I'm not a fan of braised beef I tried to give the burger a chance but it really wasn't good. The bun I assume was a potato roll and because of all the toppings the bottom was essentially disintegrated and falling apart since it was soaked. Being called a beef bacon smash burger I expected 1-2 patties and some crispy bacon definitely not what I received. I also expected with paying extra to atleast have a couple truffle shavings on it. The taste of truffle was so light I'd say it was barely even there. Service wise it was not the worst nor the best. Usually when we go to higher end places or places aiming for a star we'd expect perfect service. We had to ask for refills on multiple occasions, we don't drink alcohol so we just needed a refill of their soda from the fountain which isn't that hard. So definitely not as on point as it could be. All in all I think for being in the keys this is a good place that has some improvements to make. I don't think they're Michelin star ready as of yet but with some adjustments I definitely think they could be on their way.
