Updated. We came in the restaurant not greeted by anyone. I saw the hostess was behind the counter and asked if we seat ourselves. She told us we could sit anywhere. We sat ourselves. Our waitress came to our table and asked what are you drinking? She brought our drinks to the table. Then left, came back a few more minutes and asked if we were ready to order. We placed our order. Might I add it really wasn't busy at the time and the food doesn't take very long to deliver. After we were waiting, a table of nine came in and sat down. They placed their order. Our waitress did come by a few minutes later and drop two pitchers off of drinks for our refills but after this we didn't see her again. The table of nine received their food. At this point we had been waiting for about thirty minutes. I asked a different waitress at this time if she could check on order as it had been a bit since we placed ours. She acknowledged this and went to find our waitress. The other waitress we asked to check on our food then came back asking what we had ordered. Ready to take our order again. I got up and came around the corner to find our waitress going through the tickets at the register. That's when she proceeds to say that she can't find our ticket. That she handed it off to the kitchen but the kitchen didn't have the ticket. I asked her two questions. How did she lose the ticket and how does she not check on her tables? She pushed the blame to everyone else and never offered to make it right. That's when we decided to leave and not wait any longer. When we came back around the corner our old waitress asked the other waitress what we were doing and she said they're leaving. The initial waitress then shrugged her shoulders at us. I asked for a manager and then was told they wouldn't do anything. The service here is awful. I have been coming for years. Unfortunately the waitresses do not care to check on your table nor your order. We just waited over thirty minute for our order that never came. People came in behind us only to get their food. The waitress told me she couldn't find our ticket. No offers to make things right. Told me don't bother talking with a manager because she had been there for thirty years and he would do nothing about it. Wow! Let down. read more

No pictures this time because the food disappeared too fast! Sonny's has been consistently great every time I've visited. The service is always friendly, attentive, and welcoming. Everyone I've interacted with has been kind, which makes the experience even better. I've tried several items on the menu over the years, and nothing has disappointed me (can't speak on the salads-I don't go to Sonny's for the salad ). The burgers are delicious, the hot dogs and corn dogs are always a solid choice, and the fries are some of my favorites. It's one of those places you can count on for good food, great service, and a laid-back atmosphere. I'll definitely keep coming back! read more

This is my second time visiting Sonny's. This visit was as good as last, we were seated immediately (2:15 pm on a Wednesday). Within 10 minutes we were eating, keeping in mind it's cooked to order! The restaurant was clean, and staff was good at keeping tea glasses filled without asking. read more

Finally got into the famous Dutch Mill. Came in around 1pm for a to go order on a Saturday. The place was hopping. I heard the hostess say there was a 15-20 minute wait. The place was abuzz but not too noisy. The issue with a to go order, you are in 'competition' with phone ins and paying sit down customers. A to go order came out and just sat there for 2-3 minutes before I could finally ask the girl if it was mine. It was not. All told, my order took about 30 minutes. The good news, the guy that brought it out from the kitchen gave it to me directly. The cheeseburger was above average. Hot dog was alright but nothing special. The fries were very good. Fun, little hole-in-the wall joint. Basically, you either order a chili burger or a chili dog and fries. But, the chili is very good (especially with some Texas Pete's mixed in) and the fries are exceptional. They are hand-cut and tasty! The food is made to order and it came out HOT, which was great! The servers are pushed pretty hard because the place fills up at lunchtime. They have a nice touch of bringing a small pitcher of whatever you ordered so refills are not an issue. It's a bit of a greasy spoon, but you know that walking in. The people were nice and the food was good. Prices are fair, so no real complaints. I'd like the chili a little spicier and maybe some more seasoning on the fries, but thats's nitpicking at its finest. I'll be back for sure! read more

Such a feel good place! Lots of locals and elders which is why it feels like small town cozy diner. Food was pretty standard but served HOT and was exactly what we needed. All the workers are attentive and friendly. Will definitely be a go to spot for us. Menu is pretty large so I'm looking forward to trying it all. read more

This is a cool little place in a strip mall type of setup. The people are very friendly and the food is good, not great, but for a nice little diner with friends and family, it was good! You can tell it has a very loyal regular customer base. I had the slaw dogs. Good dog and good taste. A little dry but I'm ok. Everyone else enjoyed their meals also. I have eaten here many times. Food is good. The problem is checking out. The sign said 4% discount if paying cash. The last time I was there I wrote a check. No problem. Tried to write a check today. I was told that we only take checks from people we know. Very rude girl at the register. I told her I had written a check here before. Didn't seem to matter. I had this saved as a place to go for so long. I passed a few times and just thought Eh... maybe next time. WELL... We went for dinner and OH MY... what a surprise. Everyone was so nice and very interactive. They treated everyone as a regular. I love when you walk into a place and see that the people there frequent it often. It's a good feeling.... I knew at that moment I made a great choice. I had a Kick n Kati, a Spicy Chicken Sandwich that was perfectly put together and was super tasty. The Fries were great, and the onion rings are better. My kids ate and all enjoyed their meals as well. This place has the prices right! It was super cheap and not a long wait. Both of those things are great when you are waiting with 2 small kids. The price is right! Went to Sonny's with coworkers for lunch. It was fairly busy and with all the busyness we were greeted and seated pretty quickly. The restaurant is located in a shopping plaza. The restaurant has character and adequate seating. The menu offered a selection of burgers, hot dogs, shakes, salads, and specialty sandwiches. A ketchup bottle are at the tables along with a roll of paper towels! We ordered hot dogs, beer battered onion rings, and BLT sandwich with fries. Everyone was happy with their selections. The portion sizes were good as well! I noticed at the check out counter, a sign for Tony's ice cream! Tony's ice cream is amazing (located in Gastonia). All of the menu prices were very reasonable. Just walked in with my 4 yr old son was acknowledge by the blonde lady at the front behind the register and was told that someone will be with me in a second. A single caucasian Male walked in a couple of minutes after me and my son sat down, and a few minutes later a older caucasian gentleman, a younger caucasian male, and a younger caucasian female walked in and sat down together. The younger waitress in the gym shorts looked at my son and I, but still went straight towards the single caucasian male and took his order first, and came by and asked what we were drinking. The long haired heavy set female called out the older gentleman's name that was with the two younger caucasians, and went straight to them and put in their orders as well. Now, we were there first, but now we have 4 orders in front of us to wait on when they should've been in line behind us. It's like being at the back of the bus.... that's unacceptable in this day and time. If you don't want us in there, be bold and put a sign on the door. I really love their burgers, and the peanut butter shakes, and has recommended the place to a lot of people, but not sure this place is for my kind, Never Again! read more

A regular spot for my boyfriend and his family. By regular, I mean they go every week. Not only does the wait staff know them all by name, they know their order, their life history and probably social security numbers. It's kind of intense. Really nice group of people cooking and serving. They do a great job of making you feel at home. The restaurant itself is nothing to write home about, but there are plenty of tables for their usual crowd who seem to attend on the same nights each week. The food is where things get tough. Really nothing special here. It's a very basic menu of burgers, chicken tenders and fried flounder or fried shrimp. They have two styles of fries; home fries are actually cut from potatoes and crinkle fries which are undoubtedly, previously frozen. The onion rings look like they have a nice crunch to them but they also look like the fryer hasn't been cleaned out very often. What I've come to realize, after a few visits here, is that the families aren't going for the food. Sonny's is all about the service and the guests. People know you there. It's where a small town gone crazy, comes to find out how nice is was to be small. If nothing else, Sonny's Dutch Mill is that subtle reminder that family is what's important. read more

My table only had two regular burgers and fries and it had taken them 35 min to bring the food out. They do say in the menu that times vary since the food is cooked to order. Still could be a little quicker especially on the burgers. Average meal: Burger, fries and drink $8-$10. Burgers are served with chillie. You have to ask it not to be added f you don't like It.
